[0:49] <ukscone> anyone know anything about arduino type boards?
[0:49] <traeak> slow ?
[0:50] <ukscone> i got a board today at ohsummit labeled minuino and spikezielabs.com but no info on that site and nothing in da google
[0:52] <ukscone> i'm going to assume that it's something liek a bare bones arduinoalike that is much smaller but that's about all i can assume so far
[0:52] <traeak> ahh
[0:52] <traeak> free ?
[0:52] <ukscone> yup
[0:52] <ukscone> in the goodie bag
[0:53] <ukscone> no processor on it unfortumatly so i have to populate the board but might be worth it if only to then take it out and blast with a shitgun to see what happens :)
[0:54] <ukscone> s/shitgun/shotgun
[0:54] <ukscone> freudian slip there i think
[0:56] <ReggieUK> lies
[0:57] <ReggieUK> you saw an opportunity for tourettes and went for it
[0:59] <ReggieUK> what chip is on the board ukscone?
[1:02] <ukscone> no chips on it
[1:02] <ukscone> i assume something avr as if i google minuino and avr i actually get a link
[1:02] <ukscone> but just one line saysing bare bones arduino board
[1:03] <ukscone> the most fun i am having atm is that sparkfun gave away a bag of misc leds and a battery :) i have spent the last 20 mins lighting the leds :) by sticking the battery between the leds legs
[1:03] <ukscone> another freudian image there i think
[1:06] <ReggieUK> I think thats more euphamism or innuendo, double entendre, perhaps?
[1:07] <ReggieUK> you can't really beat a bag of blinkys
[1:07] <ReggieUK> unless you have lasers
[1:07] <ukscone> nudge nudge wink wink say no more
[1:07] <ukscone> there is at least on uv led in there
[1:07] <ukscone> maybe i can blind someone
[1:07] <ReggieUK> is it an smt avr footprint or dip?
[1:08] <ukscone> dip
[1:08] <ReggieUK> how many pins?
[1:08] <ReggieUK> 28?
[1:08] <ukscone> sod knows i'd have to count
[1:08] <ReggieUK> tip just count 1 side and double it ;)
[1:08] <ukscone> 28
[1:08] <ukscone> yeah but i'd have to reach down and get it
[1:09] <ReggieUK> ok, so they expect you to drop in an atmega 168 or 328
[1:09] <ReggieUK> 16Mhz crystal
[1:09] <ukscone> oh and i have a card i am supposed to giv at the parallax booth at maker faire and i get a free p2x32a quickstarter dev board
[1:09] <ukscone> god i ove free stuff
[1:09] <ReggieUK> :)
[1:09] <ukscone> p8x32a eveen
[1:10] <ukscone> some sort of propellor dev board
[1:10] <ReggieUK> you'll probably need 4 caps, 2-3 resistors, led, 5v regulator
[1:10] <ReggieUK> and a button
[1:11] <ukscone> yup looks like it has some tiny labels that say button and led on them
[1:11] <ukscone> seems to have two sets of holes for some pins
[1:12] <ukscone> not sure what i'll use it for but i'm sure i'll find something
[1:12] <ReggieUK> that'll be gpio
[1:12] <ukscone> maybe i can make an automatic cat feeder or something
[1:12] <ReggieUK> save it for the pi
[1:13] <ukscone> or try to switch it with an alphaboard on saturday -- noone will notice
[1:13] <ReggieUK> :D
[1:13] <ReggieUK> you automatically have an interface for 1/2 of sparkfuns inventory with code examples
[1:14] <ukscone> oh the otheer interesting "kit" in the bag was the levcircuit
[1:14] <ReggieUK> lots of people don't particularly like arduino or its clones
[1:14] <ukscone> http://electricstitches.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=70 more leds
[1:15] <ukscone> can never have too many leds
[1:15] <ukscone> i always meant to get an arduino but never had the time when i had the money and never had the money when i had the time
[1:16] <ukscone> also really couldn't justify it to SWMBO
[1:16] <ukscone> i have to get rid of about 3 boxes of stuff if i want to bring much more into the house
[1:17] <ReggieUK> atmega168/328 chips are dirt cheap
[1:19] <ukscone> yup
[1:19] <ReggieUK> as long as you have usb to serial adapter you're pretty much good to go
[1:19] <ukscone> next time i do a digikey order i'll add a couple to the order
[1:19] <ukscone> maybe i can pick up some freebies on saturday
[1:19] <ReggieUK> they're nice little units
[1:20] <ukscone> if i look pitiful enough maybe someone will feel sorry for me
[1:20] <ReggieUK> the ide is a bit sucky
[1:20] <ukscone> i looked pitiful today --- i was probably one of the oldest there
[1:20] <ReggieUK> if you could score yourself an arduino uno that would be nice :D
[1:20] <ukscone> i was amazed it was almost a 40/60 split between females and males which was a little surprising
[1:21] <ReggieUK> I'm sure we had a conversation along these lines in the channel yesterday
[1:21] <ReggieUK> I think they use anonymity online
[1:21] <ReggieUK> either that or they've figured *everything* out and aren't sharing?
[1:22] <ReggieUK> I bet theres a femnet irc server.....
[1:23] <ukscone> yeah they probably have a secret underground irc network where they tell each other all the secrets of the universe
[1:23] <ReggieUK> like they know all the api calls for the gpu blob already
[1:25] <ukscone> yeah although i think that secret is only know to cats
[1:25] <ukscone> only mooncake knows and she's not telling for anything less thatn 3 mice, a sparrow and a whoole tuna
[1:26] <ReggieUK> mmmmn, tuna

[2:23] <ukscone> possibly
[2:23] <ukscone> do you mean mentally or physically?
[2:28] <Endeavour> ukscone: Good question.
[2:28] <Endeavour> I'm looking forward to seeing the RP in person
[2:29] <ukscone> me too

[2:59] <IT_Sean> woah.
[2:59] <IT_Sean> full house tonight
[3:00] <ukscone> noone is talking though
[3:01] <Endeavour> Yeah, I'm in and out.
[3:01] <Endeavour> I'm planning on swinging by the Raspberry Pi booth at MakerFaire this weekend
[3:01] <ukscone> ElBloombito??Miguel Bloombito??Bonus Nachos! Por favor to be carefulo por que el winds es rapido y que breako tu cheap umbrellador.
[3:01] <Endeavour> Should be interesting.
[3:01] <ukscone> heh
[3:01] <Endeavour> ukscone: Stop breaking gas.
[3:01] <ukscone> Endeavour: what time you planning on being there?
[3:02] <ukscone> i'm aiming for 10 to 10:30ish
[3:02] <DaQatz> Wow it's surprising what you can find in old houses like this. I found two "journals" on is from 1870's the other from 1770's
[3:02] <DaQatz> Hundred years apart
[3:02] <Endeavour> ukscone: Don't know. I plan to meander around with no particular plans. My purview is 3D printing but I'm not exhibiting this time.
[3:02] <DaQatz> The 1770's one is in french though
[3:02] <Endeavour> Just meeting a few folks.
[3:03] <ukscone> i have to book access a ride so need to give them a time to be there
[3:03] <ukscone> so saying 10am so i'll get there by november
[3:03] <Endeavour> ?
[3:04] <Endeavour> There's a subway station close to the area.
[3:04] <ukscone> i want to hit raspberry pi booth, alienn (cyber) cortex booth and maybe pickup my board and paralaxx for free stuff then i'll see
[3:05] <ukscone> Endeavour: i know ther eis it's a 5 block walk down hill but i have mobility problems so i get access-a-ride although it's gone to hell recently. send crappy car service cars that turn up about 4 hours after they are supposed to
[3:05] <Endeavour> Ah
[3:05] <Endeavour> I see.
[3:05] <ukscone> i went by subway today from manhattan and i am feeling it now
[3:06] <Endeavour> Is there an estimated release date for RP yet?
[3:06] <ukscone> late november is the best guess
[3:07] <ukscone> i'm personally leaning towards 1st week of december
[3:07] <Endeavour> Ah
[3:08] <ukscone> i know that the last 4 things i have ordered in a similar vein have been between 1 to 3 weeks late so split the difference and i expect there will be a 2 week delay give or take
[3:08] <ukscone> in otherwords i just threw a dart at the calander and made that my educated guess
[3:08] <Endeavour> Indeed.
[3:09] <ukscone> well liz and eben should be in the netherlands by now
[3:10] <ukscone> although i think liz is actually on here way here and eben in is antwerp
[3:10] <Endeavour> Setup I think is tomorrow.
[3:11] <ukscone> cpouple of booths were messing around with stuff today but there were people putting up the tents too
[3:12] <ukscone> there are some roadworks just outside too so one side of the sidewalk was closed
[3:16] * Endeavour is now known as EndeaVour

[4:37] <ukscone> morning ShiftPlusOne
[4:39] <ShiftPlusOne> 'morning
[4:40] <ukscone> any mods made to the zipit yet?
[4:41] <ShiftPlusOne> nope... decided I needed to invest in some decent tweezers to do the smd stuff

[4:41] <ShiftPlusOne> and I haven't really been home much in the past few days
[4:42] <ukscone> i'm like a kid on christms eve. been planning my route round maker faire and what time i want to get there (at opening time) and what time to book my return ride home (after closing time)
[4:44] <ShiftPlusOne> lol
[4:44] <ShiftPlusOne> it's awesome that America still has stuff like that
[4:49] <ukscone> yup thre used to be things like this in the uk in the 80s and esrly 90s but they don't have them any more afaik
[4:55] <ShiftPlusOne> still, UK isn't doing too bad. Often when I need to order some components, UK is the only place that has them available... and also projects like Pandora and RaspberryPi are obviously from the UK as well... so it seems like there's still some DIY electronics spirit around there.
[4:58] <ShiftPlusOne> http://rob.rho.org.uk/2011/09/mmmm_pie.html well that's just not fair =(

[11:54] <ShiftPlusOne> Hey, I think I read Eben saying that the drivers to interface the GPU will be open and the only thing closed will be the actual GPU firmware. I've been repeating that for a while, but someone sent me a message asking for the source. Did I make that up and lie to people, or did I actually see that somewhere?
[11:55] <ReggieUK> As I read things, the gpu firmware blob itself will be closed but there will be an open api for us to talk to the little begger
[11:56] <ShiftPlusOne> yup
[11:56] <ReggieUK> I urge anyone that has more questions like that to find liz and eben at maker faire and ask for a pony!!
[11:57] <ShiftPlusOne> I just have to find where Eben said it so that I can shift the blame from myself if that turns out not to be the case.
[11:57] <ReggieUK> +1 kudos for the first person to get a picture of an alpha board embedded in someones forehead
[11:58] <ShiftPlusOne> O_o
[11:58] <ShiftPlusOne> what?
[11:58] <ReggieUK> Has anyone at r-pi tested the boards aerodynamics yet?
[11:59] <ShiftPlusOne> "And if you don?t want to do the right thing, you don?t have to manufacture a board that requires binary blobs to work. You could make something else instead." wow...
[11:59] <ReggieUK> ouch
[12:00] <ReggieUK> I really wish sometimes that they'd let us clear the forums with some trollish responses to those kind of troll questions/statements.
[12:01] <Stskeeps> sometimes some people take free software to religious nut stage.. i would be perfectly happy with a redistributable GPU firmware
[12:01] <Stskeeps> it's just like a bootloader
[12:01] <ReggieUK> got a link to that post?
[12:01] <ReggieUK> as long as we have an interface to a framebuffer and open gl, who really gives a crap what else is flying about?
[12:02] <ShiftPlusOne> It's not on a forum posts it's int he FAQ discussion section
[12:03] <ReggieUK> people have been programming for windows based machines for a long time now, it's not open, yet people have managed to write stuff.
[12:03] <ShiftPlusOne> lol... a reply from jamesh to a question on the FAQ page "Yes, available worldwide ? see the FAQ page."
[12:03] <ShiftPlusOne> ...referring people to the page they are on =/
[12:08] <ShiftPlusOne> "The GPU interface is via a closed-source userland module" whoops
[12:09] <Stskeeps> pretty normal on ARM
[12:09] <Stskeeps> real differentiator
[12:09] <Stskeeps> the issue is more if you can redistribute it for free
[12:10] <ShiftPlusOne> so you do need a closed source module, it's not just the code running on the GPU. Well then... time to go correct myself.
[12:10] <ReggieUK> we have some gpu code on the leapfrog arm stuff but the open gl es lite 1.0 stuff is closed (to us at least)
[12:12] <ahven> compiling under qemu arm..on a 2.4 celeron, atleast it is a separate machine :P
[12:12] <ReggieUK> meh, I've woken up in a real crabby mood today
[12:15] <ShiftPlusOne> can someone help me decypher that statement eben made? "The GPU interface is via a closed-source userland module, which communicates via a proprietary (but GPL'd) stream interface in the kernel to a RISC core on the GPU side."
[12:15] <ShiftPlusOne> the GPL'd stream interface part
[12:17] <Stskeeps> kernel module
[12:17] <Stskeeps> (thats good)

[20:25] <tinhat> well he offered to pay for it
[20:25] <tinhat> kinda generous
[20:25] <ukscone> ok he can hve one for 50 grand
[20:26] <ukscone> they'll even be nice and post it for free :)
[20:26] <ahven> too bad they are non-profit, or that would be a nice idea :P
[20:26] <tinhat> handsigned by the devs even!
[20:26] <ukscone> well you could blow that on the launch party so no profit
[20:26] <ahven> :)
[20:26] <ukscone> 500 gallons of beer are expensive
[20:27] <tinhat> would that be US gallons or imperial?
[20:27] <ukscone> english of course
[20:27] <ukscone> bloody short changing yankee pints
[20:27] <tinhat> hehe
[20:27] <WASD_> It would be cool with a bot that lets users att features. It would trigger on "!yourcommand" and then send the rest of the message to a method that a user has made.
[20:28] <WASD_> add features*
[20:29] <tinhat> ! get pint
[20:29] <ahven> pint is small, liter is the right stuff :P
[20:30] <tinhat> oh we could go Unicode on that even: ! get Maa??

[21:46] <DaQatz> no swap?
[21:47] <DaQatz> I remember compiling gentoo on a 366 system with 32 megs.

[23:36] <WASD_> most people seem to use bs=1M
[23:37] <WASD_> some /dev/zero to /dev/null gives me 7.3GB/s with 64k and "only" 2.6GB/s with 1M
[23:45] <pugvader_> Thorn_: you can notice waves in your vision if you let eyes rest on an object more than 20 or so seconds
[23:46] <Thorn_> if i focus on one point for that long i dont see waves
[23:46] <Thorn_> peripheral goes entirely black.
[23:47] <Thorn_> and continually encroaches what i'm looking at until 100% of my vision is black
[23:48] <Thorn_> (but i guess this depends on how hard a focus we're talking here)
