[16:24] <IT_Sean> *griping
[16:25] <IT_Sean> Looks like weather this weekend is going to be lovely
[16:25] <IT_Sean> in the 80s even! :D
[16:36] <ahven> sigh, hate this hardware
[16:36] <ahven> worked fine a minute ago, now nothing, absolutely nothing
[16:39] <IT_Sean> I'm having a similar issue here with one of the devices i'm testing. It will, at irregular intervals, start blinking all it's LEDs and become c ompletly unresponsive, then a few minutes later start working again.
[16:41] <ahven> well, it's abandoned hardware on this side luckily, so part of it is testing - what works and what doesn't
[16:41] <ahven> got a nice stack of optical drives from 8 computers
[16:41] <ahven> most of them got 2 in them :P
[16:48] <IT_Sean> On my end it's a prototype new board revision :/
[16:48] <Thorn_> on my end it's an rpi alphaboard
[16:48] <IT_Sean> OOOOH!
[16:48] <IT_Sean> WANT
[16:48] <IT_Sean> i can has?
[16:49] <Thorn_> me too :(
[16:55] * ReggieUK (ReggieUK@5ac9ad10.bb.sky.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[16:57] <ahven> I know that doing big changes on a fridays last minutes is a no-no, but still - I can't stand outdated software :P
[17:02] <IT_Sean> ?
[17:03] <ahven> updating a mailserver
[17:04] <ahven> an old ubuntu installation, to a bit newer one
[17:04] <IT_Sean> oh
[17:04] <IT_Sean> never a god idea to do that on a friday
[17:05] <IT_Sean> By doing it on a firday, you are ensuring that it WILL shit itself in a most apocalyptic fashon
[17:05] <IT_Sean> The best time to do that would be 9.45am on a tuesday.
[17:05] <ahven> will leave the finalizing reboot for monday :P
[17:07] <IT_Sean> Good.
[17:08] <ahven> ubuntu 6 to 7 today, and maybe the rest of the upgrades a bit later
[17:20] <traeak> !w
[17:20] <PiBot> traeak: in Parker, CO on Fri Oct 7 13:53:00 2011. Temp 7??C. Condition: Partly Cloudy, Humidity: 25%. Later 16??C - 1??C. Condition: Mostly Sunny

[17:27] <ukscone> mornign all
[17:28] * ReggieUK (ReggieUK@5ac9ad10.bb.sky.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 258 seconds)
[17:30] <IT_Sean> morning
[17:32] <ahven> and got hit in the nuts, it didn't go so smoothly as planned :P
[17:32] <traeak> hmm
[17:33] <IT_Sean> well, i think i sorted out what my problem with this prototype was
[17:33] * ReggieUK (ReggieUK@5ac9ad10.bb.sky.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[17:33] <IT_Sean> I was running it off a 9v supply, when it really needs 12v
[17:36] <IT_Sean> ... or not
[17:36] <ahven> :)
[17:36] <IT_Sean> now it's doing something similar
[17:36] <IT_Sean> it's failing the same way, just more vigoriousily
[17:37] <IT_Sean> aaaand now there is a burning smell!
[17:37] * IT_Sean unplugs it
[17:38] <IT_Sean> and the vreg is HOT
[17:39] * IT_Sean decides to be daring and plugs it back in
[17:41] <IT_Sean> Well, the device seems to be functioning properly, but, something tells me that that one component is not supposed to get flesh-searingly hot
[17:41] <Thorn_> voltage regulators do
[17:42] <Thorn_> that's why their attached to heatsinks :P
[17:42] <Thorn_> they're
[17:42] <IT_Sean> Hot enough to begin smoking a bit?
[17:42] <Thorn_> it's probably just shaking off the rust
[17:42] <Thorn_> what were you doing
[17:42] <Thorn_> 12v vreg with 9v input ?
[17:42] <IT_Sean> No, now it's on 12v
[17:43] <IT_Sean> THe device calls for 12v (although we've run them on anything from 8 to 14 without issues), and is currently on the 12v supply that it would normally ship with
[17:44] <Thorn_> speaking of smoking
[17:44] <Thorn_> new soldering iron arrived yesterday
[17:44] <IT_Sean> woot
[17:44] <Thorn_> lots of smoke coming out the handle, not much heat at the tip :D
[17:44] <IT_Sean> O.o
[17:45] <Thorn_> very creepy
[17:45] <IT_Sean> none of mine ever did that, and i buy cheap crappy ones!
[17:45] <Thorn_> same, only difference is this one is adjustable
[17:45] <Thorn_> and its.. odd
[17:45] <Thorn_> 50W tho, fsking sledgehammer :(
[17:46] <ReggieUK> 50W variable!! so it's only a sledghammer on full whack
[17:46] <Thorn_> yeah but the tip's about 4cm in diameter
[17:46] <Thorn_> (mild exageration)
[17:47] <ReggieUK> too tight to buy smaller tips then?
[17:47] <Thorn_> it came with 3 spare tips
[17:47] <Thorn_> all of which are bigger than the one it's got in it lol
[17:47] <Thorn_> might have to
[17:47] <Thorn_> altho i was incapable of removing any medium-solder even on full whack
[17:47] <Thorn_> i still think it's iffy
[17:47] * IT_Sean relabels the knob on Thorn_s new toy to read: [slightly warm / hot / very hot / surface of the sun / satan's left nut]
[17:48] <Thorn_> haha
[17:49] <IT_Sean> you may want to try smaller tips.
[17:49] <IT_Sean> The bigger the tip, the longer it's going to take to get hot, even if you do set it for "satan's left nut"
[17:49] <ReggieUK> take the tip that you don't think you'd miss if you broke it and file that sucker down a bit
[17:50] <ReggieUK> I got some cheapish tips from maplin and did that, now I have a tip that will actually touch the pad and the damn pin at the same time
[17:52] <Thorn_> heh speaking of maplin
[17:52] <Thorn_> this soldering iron came from amazon
[17:52] <Thorn_> has maplin written all over
[17:52] <Thorn_> but guess who don't actually sell it?
[17:52] <ReggieUK> precision gold?
[17:52] <Thorn_> no
[17:52] * ReimuHakurei (~reimu@wireless.sit-co.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[17:53] <Thorn_> oh, they do sell it
[17:53] <Thorn_> http://www.maplin.co.uk/50w-solder-station-35016
[17:54] <ReggieUK> That's the exact one I have
[17:54] <Thorn_> huh
[17:55] <Thorn_> does your handle smoke like hell?
[17:55] <ReggieUK> no
[17:55] <Thorn_> damn.
[17:55] <ReggieUK> but at least you know now that you can sort out some tips with a file :D
[17:56] <Thorn_> heh
[17:56] <ReggieUK> I usually have mine set to between the last orange and first red segment
[17:57] <Thorn_> oh that's what i tried at first
[17:57] <Thorn_> but after 20 minutes of heating it still couldn't tin the tip
[17:57] <ReggieUK> did you get yourself a pot of tip tinner too?
[17:57] <Thorn_> i just use solder
[17:57] <ReggieUK> I would take the tip out and take a look down the barrel
[17:58] <IT_Sean> make sure a leprachon with an ice cube hasn't crawled up inside? O.o
[17:58] <ReggieUK> from memory the element is tubular
[17:58] <Thorn_> toasted leprauchon now
[17:58] <ReggieUK> no, to make sure the element isn't screwed in some way
[17:59] <Thorn_> hey
[17:59] <Thorn_> it melted solder on max temp
[17:59] <Thorn_> so as long as the handle doesnt burst into flames while im using it
[17:59] <Thorn_> it's good :D
[17:59] <ReggieUK> it does take a little while for the tip to warm up on mine
[17:59] <ReggieUK> but once it's there it's all good
[18:00] <IT_Sean> oh
