[4:35] <ctyler> So we've got Fedora running reasonably well on the Raspberry Pi.
[4:36] <ctyler> Boots to character login in about 23 seconds, using 14-17MB of RAM depending on whether CUPS is enabled or not.
[4:37] <ctyler> LXDE and XFCE up and running. Video drivers need optimization, though.
[4:40] <ctyler> Good native toolchain and the essential scripting languages.
[4:51] * robbiet480_away is now known as robbiet480
[5:03] <ukscone> ctyler: nice
[5:04] <ukscone> what kernel are you using atm with it? a 2.6 or a 3.0.x ?
[5:26] <ctyler> ukscone: 2.6.35
[5:26] <ctyler> we're running 3.0.x on other arm stuff but so far only have raspi patches for 2.6.35
[5:29] <ukscone> you had any problems building the cifs module with that kernel? i had a pig of a time the last few days and it looks like some android dev's have been having probs with cifs.ko on their devices
[5:30] <ctyler> cifs is one of the pieces we haven't experimented with yet, sorry
[5:31] <ukscone> ok. just curious. i got it srted in the end but had to build it into the kernel as thee sugegsted "fixes" didn't work
[5:31] <ctyler> so it worked non-modular but not modular?
[5:32] <ukscone> yup
[5:32] <ukscone> something to do with slow-work
[5:33] <ctyler> we've got a pretty mixed environment here, but don't do much file sharing, and generally do NFS rather than SMB/CIFS when we do need file sharing
[5:33] <ctyler> but I should get someone looking into that
[5:34] <ukscone> yup i personally wouldn't use cifs and well i don't but the person i was buildign the kernel for (freescale imx51 or something) needed/wanted cifs
[5:35] <ctyler> iSCSI on ARM has some issues too
[5:41] <ukscone> nice to know
[5:47] * atts (~adam@146-115-165-244.c3-0.wth-ubr1.sbo-wth.ma.cable.rcn.com) Quit (Quit: Leaving.)

[12:06] <ctyler> joukio: we've been running F13 armv5tel for about a month
[12:11] <ctyler> joukio: will be testing F15-ARM as it nears release over the next few weeks. A bit nervous about the systemd switch and its impact on memory requirements.
[12:41] <joukio> ctyler: if you need hands, please give a call....
[12:41] <joukio> I am quite familiar with fed15, just the arm thingy is new :)
[12:42] <joukio> indeed, mem reqs could be an issue, but that's something that can be solved I guess...
[12:43] <joukio> I am very keen on getting it running :)

[14:39] <IT_Sean> it was locely this past weekend
[14:39] <IT_Sean> *lovely
[14:39] <IT_Sean> but too cool this morning
[14:39] <ukscone> too many mosi's still alive -- got bitten during the might. doing my michelin man impression
[14:40] <IT_Sean> mosquitos are bastards.
[14:40] <ukscone> yes typical female blood suckers
[14:41] * IT_Sean puts a sweater on
[14:41] <ukscone> i have shorts and teeshirt on with the windows wide open
[14:42] <ukscone> i lied about the shorts though
[14:42] <ukscone> still going regimental style
[14:42] <IT_Sean> that doesn't make it right
[14:42] <IT_Sean> my office is over airconditioned
[14:44] <ukscone> no such thing as over air conditioned as long as they also put some humidity back in the air
[14:58] <IT_Sean> there is such a thing, when it is perpetually freezing in my office!
[14:59] <ukscone> you are looking at it the wrong way
[14:59] <ukscone> it isn't freezing in the office it's the perfect temp for being able to eat a pint of ice cream during the day without it melting
[15:03] * ReggieUK (ReggieUK@5aca56b8.bb.sky.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:08] <IT_Sean> ukscone: you are odd.
[15:08] <IT_Sean> ... and wrong.
[15:08] <IT_Sean> But mostly odd.
[15:08] <ReggieUK> eccentric
[15:08] <ReggieUK> he's not odd
[15:08] <ReggieUK> he's got character
[15:08] <ReggieUK> and twiglets
[15:09] <ukscone> not got twiglets atm :(
[15:10] <ukscone> do have a jam roly poly though
[15:10] <ukscone> i woke up during the night and decided that a little baking was just the thing to do
[15:14] <ReggieUK> did you do custard too?
[15:15] <ukscone> nope i have to go to the store lateer and pick up a can of birds ready made or birds powder
[15:16] <ReggieUK> nom nom nom
[15:16] <ReggieUK> get the powder
[15:16] <ReggieUK> the ready made stuff is just odd
[15:30] * IT_Sean backs away slowly
[15:31] <acfrazier> ah crap, buying a raspberry pi on launch day looks like it's going to be similar to the iPhone.. sold out in a day or so
[15:32] <ukscone> acfrazier: yep, i really dount i'll be able to get one unless i hack the webstore and lock everyone else out
[15:32] <ukscone> even with the buy one get one i suspect that "businesses" will try to get them all
[15:32] * deadprogram (~ron@76.172.24.111) Quit (Quit: deadprogram)
[15:33] <ukscone> with orders of 10 or 20 at a time, us little guys will have a hard time squeezing in
[15:33] <acfrazier> yeah, because even $70 for one is a good price
[15:33] <acfrazier> to businesses anyway
[15:33] <ukscone> so many people want to base businesses on it too so they'll take the double price hit
[15:33] <acfrazier> yup.
[15:34] <ukscone> i think they should sell them in order of forum id number :)
[15:34] <ukscone> unless the first 2500 members want more than 4 each we shoudl get a couple each
[15:34] <joukio> I want at least 4.... :S :)
[15:35] <ukscone> or maybe by age, us oldsters need them sooner as we might not be around for later batches
[15:35] <joukio> and about 10 of my friends want 2 each....
[15:35] <Anppa> good idea
[15:35] <joukio> so I guess I want to have 25 :S
[15:35] <joukio> :)
[15:35] <ukscone> i want 10,000 but i guess i'd better win the lottery first
[15:35] <joukio> ukscone: I agree :P, the one who's ordering is > 60 :)
[15:35] <Anppa> actually, i'm old enough to have the required patience :P
[15:36] <ukscone> Anppa: well i have patience just not sure if i'll actually wake up tomorrow most days
[15:37] <ukscone> damn i can't find the darn webpage i rememebr seeign about 8 months ago
[15:37] <IT_Sean> that's disapointing
[15:37] <Anppa> i ensure that by going to bed after midnight
[15:37] <IT_Sean> i'll be lightly irritated ifi can't get one
[15:37] <ukscone> i seem to rememebr a way to enable adb on the nookcolor without a perminant root and without using provision.cmd
[15:37] <ukscone> and i can't find the ruddy page
[15:38] <IT_Sean> Google is your friend
[15:38] <ukscone> IT_Sean: f. u. and i've been googiling for 90 mins already
[15:38] <Anppa> i'll be lightly amused if i get one from the 2nd batch, those have that annoying hw bug fixed from the first batch :]
[15:38] <ukscone> my google-fu is weak today
[15:43] <ukscone> the other way they could allocate sales is to do it in reverse alphabetical order based on forum username
[15:45] <Anppa> my favorite is the randomized alphabetical order :]
[15:45] <IT_Sean> I say do it alphabetically, by last name :p
[15:45] <ukscone> as long as i am allowed to write the randomizer they use
[15:45] <acfrazier> well, I finally pulled the trigger. changed my FB password to some 24-character monstrosity I didn't memorize, submitted the deletion request, and now I just gotta resist the urge to log in for 2 weeks.
[15:46] <IT_Sean> killing your FP account?
[15:46] <acfrazier> yup.
[15:46] <IT_Sean> *FB
[15:46] <IT_Sean> why?
[15:46] <acfrazier> it's become more of a nuisance than a tool to connect with friends.
[15:47] <IT_Sean> ah
[15:47] <acfrazier> I only have 2-3 people I talk to IRL, and they have my cell number
[15:47] * atts (~asheehan@static-99-136-171-68.axsne.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:47] <acfrazier> in contrast, I had 399 friends when I told them to kill it
[15:47] <ReggieUK> do we have a firm release date yet?
[15:47] <Anppa> the problem is that some people actually believe they'll reach me by FB, then they're annoyed that i haven't reacted to the week-old unread message :)
[15:47] <IT_Sean> I only use it to communicate with family & close friends, and only those that i do se ein the meatspace on a regular basis. I also have all the stupid crap disabled, so...
[15:47] <ukscone> ReggieUK: nothing newer than 4th quarter
[15:48] <ukscone> i expect we'll get schedule update around halloween
[15:48] <IT_Sean> well... it IS Q4, so...
[15:48] <ReggieUK> phew, thought I'd missed out on some important news for a moment
[15:48] <ReggieUK> I want 2
[15:48] <IT_Sean> I want 1
[15:48] <ReggieUK> one for me and one for my son
[15:48] <IT_Sean> ... to start, anyway.
[15:49] <acfrazier> I want 2, one for me and one for my friend in indianapolis who is flat broke
[15:49] <ukscone> hmmmmm anyone seen mdavey recently? did we frighten him off?
[15:49] <acfrazier> ukscone you might remember me talking about him at Maker Faire
[15:49] <ReggieUK> I have managed to convince him that his ICT at school is great if he want's to be a secretary but not much use with actual computers
[15:49] <ukscone> acfrazier: well poor memory aside yep i believe so
[15:50] <acfrazier> unfortunately, if I want to /get/ 2 I need to pay for 4.
[15:50] <IT_Sean> 'less you wait, yes.
[15:50] <acfrazier> otherwise I guarantee the buy one give one will sell out.
[15:50] <acfrazier> Wait? ha
[15:50] <ukscone> i want to get clarification from liz and eben about the second batch
[15:50] * IT_Sean might wait 'till all the bugs are worked out.
[15:50] * IT_Sean also might not
[15:51] <ukscone> i.e. although it is for education can non-educational users buy them if they are available
[15:51] <IT_Sean> well... they are selling the 1st batch to anyone... why wouldn't they the second?
[15:52] <ukscone> IT_Sean: because the first batch was specifically for others not education and they want the second batch to be for education not hobbyists
[15:52] <IT_Sean> oh
[15:52] <IT_Sean> bugger
[15:52] <ukscone> they might decide that hobbyists have to wait
[15:52] <IT_Sean> that would SUCK.
[15:52] <IT_Sean> i mean... i'm all for education, but...
[15:52] <ukscone> it would suck but it might be their thinking
[15:53] <IT_Sean> it's the hobbiests that'll be doing the really interisting stuff :p
[15:53] <ukscone> actually i will email liz and see if i can get clarification
[15:53] <IT_Sean> and that'll only benefit the edu market, i'd think
[15:53] <IT_Sean> share what you hear
[15:56] <ukscone> will do
[15:56] <ukscone> just fired off the missive and i expect i'll get a reply by this time tomorrow at the latest
[15:56] <ukscone> if we have to wait until a third run that won't be too bad as long as it's by say march or april
[15:57] <ukscone> the 2nd batch is supposed to happen around feb/march iirc
[15:58] * IT_Sean sighs

[17:06] <acfrazier> ukscone, better hope you don't have any bad sectors.. this is why you have a backup regardless
[17:06] <Anppa> as they say at Sierra: save early, save often :)
[17:06] <ebarch> lots of good backup services are cheap now too (backblaze, crash plan, carbonite)
[17:06] <Anppa> hmm... should take fresh backups as well
[17:07] <ukscone> i have a full backup from last month but i have't backed up 2 vm's yet. backing yup 100GB and 60GB isn't fun
[17:07] <ebarch> ah, that does suck. maybe a NAS with RAID?
[17:07] <Anppa> i take backups to leftover 3.5" pata 250G disks and take the latest to work and bring the older one back home
[17:07] <ukscone> i was shifting stuff from internal hd to the external one and it flaked out, windows lost it and then on an error check it stalled several times and some crc errors
[17:08] <ukscone> backup and then a reformat and then give it a check. i suspect the resize a few weeks ago did something iffy
[17:08] <ukscone> or the disk really is dying in which case i'm f***ed
[17:08] <Anppa> feared? :)
[17:10] <ukscone> feared, fouled, folded......

[19:43] <ukscone> and tandy thank god but they did end up changing their name
[19:43] <ukscone> bought a grundy newbrain they went bust, bought a camputers lynx they went bust, bought a dragon 32 they went bust, bought a sinclair spectrum and they got sold to amstrad......
