[0:00] * Beakster__ is now known as Beakster
[0:01] <obarthelemy> UK you there ?
[0:01] <Beakster> i didnt know there was a -dev channel until now =)
[0:01] <obarthelemy> it's the channel I use to bug UKScone about my Linux problems ^^
[0:06] <ukscone> heh
[0:07] <ukscone> yup i'm here but i'll be popping in and out as i am making rice to go with dinner and waiting for the pharmacy to delivery the wife's drugs
[0:07] <ukscone> but i'm mostly here
[0:07] * PiBot (~Raspberry@c-24-147-35-37.hsd1.ma.comcast.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[0:12] <obarthelemy> and i'm mostly harmless, so we should go well together
[0:12] <obarthelemy> I feel all intimidated now that our private corner seems to be gone
[0:13] <ukscone> heh
[0:13] <ukscone> ok wifes medicines are here now just waiting for the potatos to boil and the rice to cook
[0:22] <ukscone> ok spuds are ready off to mash them bbiab
[0:23] <Beakster> rice and tatties? thats a lot of carbs! ;)
[0:24] <obarthelemy> I was trying to get everyone on a diet with that list of disgusting things I ate on the forum
[0:30] <ukscone> :)
[0:30] <ukscone> spuds for wife she doesn't want rice
[0:31] <ukscone> i have mashed spuds, roasted spuds, stuffing , collared greens, chicken
[0:38] <obarthelemy> went for foie gras steak tonight, with a bottle of red (i ended up paying for it since I drank most of it anyway, plus the unlucky friend's who was opposite me glass of sauternes). I'm really a bad friend. And a drunk.
[0:39] <ukscone> :)
[0:41] * DaQatz (~DB@c-24-147-35-37.hsd1.ma.comcast.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:41] <obarthelemy> hey uk, much to my surprise, gdisk worked beautifully, rapidly and flawlessly to convert my MBR disk to GPT
[0:42] <ukscone> cool
[0:42] * DaQatz (~DB@c-24-147-35-37.hsd1.ma.comcast.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:43] <obarthelemy> gdisk 2:, y, w, q... done !
[0:43] <ukscone> :)
[0:44] <obarthelemy> I'm trying NOT to gptize all my disks just for kicks...
[0:44] * TachiH (~TachiH@host-92-25-98-44.as13285.net) Quit (Quit: Bye)
[0:44] <ukscone> go on you now you want to
[0:44] <obarthelemy> gdisk 2:, y (es I want to convert to GPT), w (rite that to disk), q (uit)... done !
[0:45] <obarthelemy> I don't want to phus my luck ^^
[0:45] <obarthelemy> next step is to dual boot Linux on my main PC to keeep me busy until the Pi
[0:45] <ukscone> yeah you are due for something to blow up
[0:46] <obarthelemy> hsut UP
[0:46] <ukscone> if you want to dualboot but don't want to repartition try wubi
[0:46] <obarthelemy> It's been like 2 years since the last big drama... i hear the clock ticking
[0:47] <ukscone> http://wubi.sourceforge.net/
[0:48] <obarthelemy> I think I have spare room on my HD, I'm a little bit afraid of grub2 barfing as bad as last time though, so I'm looking for something grub1 or lilo, nevr used lilo though
[0:48] <ukscone> btw new upgrade for nookcolor firmware coming and the new device specs have been leaked
[0:48] <ukscone> try wubi
[0:48] <ukscone> it's pretty safe and only adds a line to the windows bootmanager
[0:48] <obarthelemy> yep, i've seen that. same old screen though, just a tad to scvelte
[0:48] <obarthelemy> svelte
[0:49] <obarthelemy> I have ubuntu on an externel SSD and it works fine, I just need to put it in the internal HD... I'm getting to dislike Ubuntu "let's be edgy and buggy" mentality though. I went a plain old very standard distro, but with dirvers
[0:51] <obarthelemy> my MB does dual-screen, USB2, BT, eSATA, sound over HDMI... nd I need all that
[0:51] <obarthelemy> USB3 too
[0:51] <ukscone> so probably choose one that the pi will use so debian, fedora or arch
[0:51] <obarthelemy> yep. Trying to work up the courage for Arch
[0:52] <obarthelemy> I'm a bit confused about the absolute minimal GUI though.. seems there's even lighter than lxde
[0:53] <ukscone> i think matchbox is smaller then there are some really weird small wm too
[0:55] <obarthelemy> there's a french guy who does a prepackaged Arch variant, http://ctkarch.org/project.php?en#more , "I had also included a small graphical environment, and some applications just in case ? I had just forsaken KDE3.5, and KDE4 did not suit me, so I configured a small desktop using Openbox + a panel I was quite happy about."
[0:55] <obarthelemy> problems with variants is tht support is veryyyyy patchyyyy
[0:57] * ReimuHak_ (~reimu@ Quit (Quit: Leaving...)
[0:57] <ukscone> from what i've heard openbox is pretty good -- matchbox is a fork of it iirc
[1:01] <obarthelemy> http://www.phoronix.com/data/img/results/linux_desktop_vitals/2.png
[1:07] <ukscone> what a lousy night for tv -- wife changed the channel to thee x factor then went to sleep and is lying on the remote
[1:07] <ukscone> i need to see what stuff i havee d/l'ed to listen too
[1:07] <obarthelemy> or kick the wife ?
[1:08] <obarthelemy> or maybe, you know, walk up to the TV and use the buttons (square or round cutouts in the bezel)
[1:09] <ukscone> it uses a cable box that doesn't have buttons on it
[1:09] <obarthelemy> that's progress for you !
[1:09] <ukscone> yeah we neeed moree buttons on things
[1:09] <obarthelemy> maybe you can ssh into the box, hack the firmware, recompile the kernel, and change channels ?
[1:11] <obarthelemy> mmm tonight is "person of interest"... and maybe Prime Suspect.
[1:11] <obarthelemy> "Charlie's Angels" is a sad sad failure :-p
[1:12] <obarthelemy> hey. 1am here... nighty night !
[1:13] <ukscone> night

[19:51] <traeak> hehe, funny liz is a culinary critic in great britain...that's likely a very simple job: "english food sucks!"
[19:51] <traeak> hehe
[19:54] <ukscone> hehe
[19:54] <ReggieUK> what exactly is wrong with chicken tikka masala?
[19:54] <ReggieUK> nothing
[19:54] <ukscone> english food is very good, you've just never had any
[19:54] <ukscone> remember half the top chefs int he world are british :)
[19:55] <ReggieUK> sunday roast is one of the best meals evvvvvvar
[19:55] <DaQatz> Gah, I really should go re-write PiBot's translation plugin.
[19:55] <ukscone> ReggieUK: yes especially with several forms of spuddage
[19:55] <traeak> i'm just trolling :-p
[19:55] <ReggieUK> yeah
[19:55] <ReggieUK> mashed
[19:55] <ReggieUK> roasted
[19:55] <ukscone> roasted
[19:55] <traeak> i can only eat indian food a couple times a year
[19:55] <ukscone> new potatos boiled with a dash of mint and baby peas
[19:56] <ReggieUK> mmmmmmn
[19:56] <traeak> ukscone: i've had english and irish food and it's nothing worth mentioning
[19:56] <ukscone> damn now i'm hungry and only have a packet of rich tea biscuits within arms length
[19:56] <ReggieUK> which means you need a cup of tea
[19:56] <traeak> :-p
[19:56] <ukscone> traeak: ever have laver bread?
[19:57] * IT_Sean throws ukscone a part-empty box of dry cereal
[19:57] <traeak> ukscone: no, but i don't ytpically like bread...i'm sensitive to wheat
[19:57] <IT_Sean> ceiliac (or however you spell it)?
[19:57] <traeak> my mother's home town in germany exports their products all over germany
[19:57] <ukscone> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laver_(seaweed)
[19:58] <ukscone> traeak: poor you, you'll never experience a cornish pasty
[19:58] <ukscone> or soda bread
[19:58] <ReggieUK> or steak and kidney pie
[19:58] <ukscone> IT_Sean: what type of cerael? rice crispies by any chance?
[19:58] <ukscone> mmmmMMMMMmmmmmm steak and kidney pie
[19:58] <traeak> i really like korean food and especially malaysian
[19:59] <traeak> and of course americanized sushi is the best
[19:59] <IT_Sean> ukscone: could be. 's whatever i have in my office
[20:00] <traeak> but i find its fun to troll limeys :-p (heheh)
[20:03] <traeak> ukscone: possibly true...any trips i may make would be limited to ... well interesting...south of bristol
[20:04] <ukscone> south of bristol? won't you get a bit wet standing in the english channel?
[20:05] * IT_Sean snerks
[20:08] <ukscone> tea and biscuits time
[20:26] <ukscone> Doing the Express small crossword. Clue: Single European Currency (4). Screwed doesn't fit in however small I write it.
[20:26] <ukscone> lol
[20:27] <IT_Sean> crap?
[20:28] * IT_Sean can think of other 4 letter words that would be aproperate, but isn't sure he can say them in #raspberrypi
[20:28] <ukscone> we'll get DaQatz to edit the log files
[20:28] <DaQatz> ??
[20:28] <IT_Sean> haha
[20:29] <ukscone> well isn't PiBot yours?
[20:29] <DaQatz> Yes
[20:29] <ukscone> oh hang on PiBot doesn't log
[20:29] <ukscone> it's datagutt's that logs
[20:29] <IT_Sean> DaQatz: your mission, should you choose to accept it (you haven't got a choice, by the way) is to remove naughty words from the #raspberrypi log files.
[20:29] <DaQatz> PiBot logs
[20:29] <ukscone> too many fricking bots in here
[20:30] <DaQatz> PiBot just isn't this channels official log bot.
[20:30] <datagutt> lol
[20:30] <datagutt> mine was first
[20:30] <ukscone> well once the raspi is actualyl released i think we might want to reset the logs so the little dears won't get corrupted when they come in here for help
[20:30] <IT_Sean> hahahahahhhahahaa
[20:31] <DaQatz> That's pretty easy to do.
[20:31] <DaQatz> At least for mine
[20:31] <IT_Sean> but, corrupting the young folk is what it's all about!
[20:31] <ukscone> IT_Sean: there is corrupting and corrupting
[20:31] * IT_Sean 'll load his bot into this channel if you aren't careful! :p
[20:31] <DaQatz> I'm busy re writing PiBot's translation plugin.
[20:31] * NIN101 (~NIN101@2001:530::216:3cff:fe71:5e1e) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[20:32] <IT_Sean> DaQatz: can you write in a Drunken Irish translation matrix?
[20:32] <DaQatz> Google is shutting down their free api in dec
[20:32] <IT_Sean> those bastards!
[20:32] <DaQatz> I'm just going to pull the translations from their website instead of using the api.
[20:33] <DaQatz> Eats more bandwidth, is more annying to parse.
[20:33] <DaQatz> But I'm not going to pay per translation
[20:33] * NIN101 (~NIN101@2001:530::216:3cff:fe71:5e1e) has joined #raspberrypi
[20:35] <IT_Sean> my bot actually isn't all that useful. It was supposed to be, but, i got lazy. It mostly just sits there and plays with itself, making rude noises on occasion.
[20:35] <IT_Sean> :(
[20:36] <ukscone> so it'd fit right in here then
[20:37] <IT_Sean> probably.
[20:38] <ukscone> we already frightened one person away -- not seen mdavey for weeks
[20:39] <IT_Sean> heh
[20:39] <IT_Sean> he'll be back
[20:39] <IT_Sean> How'd you manage to scare him off
[20:39] <IT_Sean> ?
[20:40] <ukscone> dunno just not seen him in here for yonks

[21:40] <IT_Sean> 20 minutes 'till the weekend start
[21:41] <ukscone> have i told anyone recently how much i hate C
[21:42] <IT_Sean> not in the past couple of hours
[21:43] <friggle> let's all switch to Forth
[21:43] <friggle> no wait, bare-metal scheme
[21:44] <friggle> ATS
[21:46] <ukscone> forth would be ok -- it was fun on the jupiter ace and their is forth available for th tandy m100 so it shoudl be portable :)
[21:46] <ukscone> between the pi and thee tandy
[21:55] <friggle> Thinking Forth is a fantastic book, about so much more than just the Forth language http://thinking-forth.sourceforge.net/
[21:55] <ukscone> friggle: i'd love to see some form of old school baremetal basic just for fun and replicating the 80s but really onestly i think lisp and python as baremetal will probably bee more useful for teaching and learning
[21:55] <ukscone> forth would be nice to have too as baremetal the only problem is going to be what do we lose by not being able to access stuff in the gpu
[21:55] <ukscone> will we lose audio?
[21:55] <traeak> well 'c' is too much a loose cannon
[21:55] <friggle> I don't think there's much point in going baremetal either. Sure, boot straight to a Python/Lua prompt if you want. But Linux provides so much it seems like a waste to throw it away
[21:55] <traeak> memory management *IS* a PITA with 'c'
[21:55] <ukscone> framebuffer will be ok for most graphics programming but will losing accelleration matter or not
[21:55] <traeak> and it's too verbose in many ways
[21:55] <ukscone> oh yes forgot about lua
[21:55] <friggle> that's just practicality though, I'm sure plenty of people will be playing with OS dev on the device
[21:55] <ukscone> the raspi will make a nice prosody server
[21:55] <traeak> for some stupid reason i had the itch to do a "C++ lite" deal
[21:55] <traeak> was reviewing c++ keywords, etc
[21:55] <friggle> audio is through the GPU but it's probably not difficult to work out how it works
[21:55] <ukscone> i have no real use for it other than because but really looking forward to having a cheap riscos device
[21:55] <friggle> or well, it depends whether most of the work is in the binary blob running in Linux userspace or the binary blob at the other end of the GPU command stream
[21:55] <traeak> friggle: OS devwould be excellent on this device...just have to find a non PITA way to install boot images without having to always physically plug devices into the R-PI
[21:56] <ukscone> i was wondering if we could load the firmwarm blob into ram when in baremetal and mmap it
[21:56] <friggle> traeak: yeah, and USB is a pain

[21:57] <friggle> though providing keyboard and mouse through serial like they apparently ended up doing at the riscos show is a good workaround :)
[22:00] <ukscone> ok i am about to defenistrate this bloody computer -- stupid computer don't do what i tell you to do what i mean you to do just because i don't know how to tell you doeens't mean you shouldn't do it
[22:01] <friggle> I rather like the way that word has been adopted for the act of switching to Linux from windows
[22:03] <ukscone> :)
[22:03] <ukscone> it's one of my favourite words, i try to use it as often as possible -- another one of my favourite words is judicious
[22:11] <traeak> friggle: USB or sd-cards
