[1:53] <Beakster> ukscone, are you from Oban?
[1:54] <ukscone> Beakster: nope but i like their whiskey
[1:54] <ukscone> and i have beeen there in my youth
[1:54] <Beakster> i was at the oban distilery maybe 4 years back
[1:54] <Beakster> it's not too far from where i grew up
[1:54] <ukscone> and my family live on lewis so they go there alot
[1:55] <Beakster> cool, never been over to Lewis
[1:55] <Beakster> was on Skype winter before last
[1:55] <Beakster> *Skye
[1:55] <ukscone> well part of my family do the others live in essex and the midlands
[1:56] <ukscone> my mother read a series of books in the 70s and her dream was to move up to the scottish islands so when my sisters and i left home they bought a croft on lewis
[1:57] <Beakster> cool
[1:57] <Beakster> did they keep up the croft?
[1:57] <Beakster> it sounds like hard word
[1:57] <ukscone> they weeren't allowed to -- they had to rent the land to a native
[1:58] <Beakster> weird
[1:58] <Beakster> not heard of that before
[1:58] <Beakster> except on Jersey
[1:58] <ukscone> the crofting laws mean only natives can croft although others can actually own it
[1:58] <Beakster> how do they define native?
[1:58] <ukscone> she did end up with a willow tree farm though
[1:59] <ukscone> native to the island
[1:59] <ukscone> i believe biut an english/welsh woman and english/scotish man don't qualify
[2:00] <Beakster> they should have got a croft on st kilda, plenty space there now ;)
[2:01] <ukscone> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lillian_Beckwith thats the books she read
[2:02] <Beakster> cool, will gice that a look a bit later... gonna watch a movie with the missus now. laters

[16:09] <ukscone> morning ReggieUK
[16:09] <ReggieUK> hi ukscone
[16:09] <ReggieUK> and yeah, sad but true, 3pm and I have only just dragged my ass out of bed
[16:11] <ReggieUK> I wonder if anyone here owns a canon 400d?
[16:12] <ReggieUK> and if someone does, I Wonder if they would mind measuring the battery for me with a ruler?
[16:12] <ReggieUK> I need the width of the face that has the battery terminals on it
[16:13] <ReggieUK> and I need the layout/dimensions of the battery terminals too
[16:13] * ReggieUK wants to build a dummy battery without having to dismantle the camera
[16:27] * bandit12 (~AndChat@149.254.234.169) has joined #raspberrypi
[16:33] <ukscone> didn't someone do something like that on hack-a-day a while back
[16:33] <ukscone> the model number sounds familar too
[16:33] <bandit12> ReggieUK do you still need 400d battery measuring?
[16:33] <ReggieUK> yes please bandit12
[16:34] <ReggieUK> will you be around in about 30mins?
[16:34] <ReggieUK> I need to go out to the shops before they shut :(
[16:34] <bandit12> I'm stuck out shopping for the next hour or so, but I can do it when I get home
[16:35] <ReggieUK> that would be fantastic :) Gives me time to get some supplies :)
[16:35] <ReggieUK> thank you, very much appreciated
[16:36] <ukscone> Silly fact of the day: 1 raspberry pi costs 2.5 times 1 homemade raspberry pie (using my costs for ingredients)
[16:36] <bandit12> No problem, looks like i'm going home now :-)
[16:36] <bandit12> Later
[16:36] <ReggieUK> :) bbiab
[16:39] <Dagger3> ukscone: you need to get that down to ??5
[16:40] * mdavey (~chatzilla@host217-35-75-188.in-addr.btopenworld.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[16:42] <ukscone> Dagger3: yeah if i was making it on a production line i could probably get it down to around 3 to 4 per pi and if i bought in bulk for the filling it'd get alot cheeaper
[16:42] <ukscone> the big cost is that filling is $6/ 8oz can
[16:42] <ukscone> and you nead 1 and a bit cans per pie
[16:43] <ukscone> afternoon mdavey
[16:43] <Dagger3> I was thinking a ratio of 3.14:1 would be most appropriate
[16:43] <Dagger3> which happens to be very nearly ??5
[16:43] <ukscone> :)
[16:44] <mdavey> good morning, ukscone
[16:44] <ukscone> i'd have to buy a case of filling and get slightly more expensive butter, lard and spices
[16:45] <mdavey> Anyone in the UK been watching Educating Essex? (might be available outside the UK on channel4.com/4od)
[16:45] <ukscone> mdavey: i watched the first two episodes
[16:45] <ukscone> gotta love uk tv bittorrent trackers
[16:45] <ukscone> but ssshhhhhhh don't tell anyone
[16:46] <mdavey> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KgQYZCgfnc
[16:46] <ukscone> need to catch up on the rest but i have tons of stuff i need to watch that i haven't got around to yet
[16:46] <mdavey> When I see that, I think "What is Raspberry Pi? Where did it come from?"
[16:46] <ukscone> :)
[16:47] <ukscone> we were never that bad at school
[16:47] <mdavey> Would be fab to do a spoof of that clip.
[16:47] <ukscone> ok maybe we were but not really
[16:47] <mdavey> ukscone yea we were.
[16:47] <ukscone> i used to get caught on the school roof during the sumer alot
[16:48] <ukscone> we never talked back to our teachers though
[16:48] <ukscone> i did get banned from the computer lab for a while for using a window as a door
[16:48] <ukscone> because the teacher was late unlocking the door
[16:48] <ukscone> and it was my scheduled time in thee lab
[16:48] <mdavey> Although they had the head and deputy on BBC Breakfast News a few days ago. One comment they made was that teachers are social workers first and educators second now. There was an aspect of that when I was at school, but I think it is much more extreme now.
[16:49] <ukscone> yes there was an aspect when i went to school especially in middle school
[16:49] <ukscone> they could still cane when i was at school
[16:49] <ukscone> but i got good at forging my parents signatures so i never got caned or served detention
[16:49] <mdavey> I hacked into the school network. But generally I was a good student, bit of a swot, bit of a geek.
[16:49] <ukscone> and forging teacher's signatures so i was always on the 1st lunch sitting
[16:50] <ukscone> we didn't have networked computers but i hacked the college network of tandy's
[16:51] <mdavey> They outlawed the cane when I was in primary, but by then it was more of a deterent rather than something used. They had them all hanging up on the wall by the entrance.
[16:51] <ukscone> at school we only had 1 bbc, 1 zx81 and an rml80z until i went to high school then we had a dec pdp 9that was never turned on) an atari 800 an rml380z and 2 bbc's
[16:52] <ukscone> mdavey: we had form houses too in my school and merits, golden merits and demerits
[16:52] <ukscone> i ended up with about 10x more demerits than merits and a golden merit was a thing of myth for me
[16:52] <mdavey> They purchased two classrooms of Acorn Archimedes at secondary school, and had networked bbcs and some windows machines. And a bbc doomsday machine and a couple of RM Nimbus.
[16:53] <mdavey> I think the primary school only had 1 bbc, nothing else.
[16:53] <ukscone> computers hadn't been invented when i was at primary school :)
[16:54] <mdavey> need to take my car for a test drive now, will bbl
[16:54] <ukscone> actually now i think about it the middle school didn't get the bbc until i was in high school
[16:55] <ukscone> the year i was leaving iirc -- i rememebred it because one of my electives at high school was teaching int he primary and middle schools
[16:55] <ukscone> bbc micro was 82 wasn't it?

[17:27] <ukscone> how'd the test drive go mdavey
[17:31] <ReggieUK> Bandit12, yes I am here :)
[17:33] <mdavey> ukscone: yup, new brake pads are performing fine :)
[17:34] <Bandit12> ok what measurement do you need besides width 33mm length 44mm
[17:34] <ukscone> good job otherwise it could have been nasty
[17:38] <ReggieUK> Bandit12, if you look at this image, I've marked the measurements I need
[17:38] <ReggieUK> http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg85/SkyAndStuff/canon-nb-2lh2.jpg
[17:39] <Bandit12> ReggieUK : ok give me a minute and i'll have them for you
[17:39] <ReggieUK> awesome :)
[17:39] <ReggieUK> thanks
[17:43] <Bandit12> ReggieUK : going from left to right on the photo 6mm,3mm,3mm,6mm the contacts are 5mm each
[17:49] <ReggieUK> so thats, 6,5,3,5,3,5,6?
[17:49] <Bandit12> Yep thats it
[17:50] <ukscone> ok what's the next number in that sequence
[17:50] <ReggieUK> 33
[17:53] <Bandit12> Out of interest what you making?
[17:53] <ReggieUK> a dummy battery
[17:54] <ReggieUK> I got given the camera yesterday but it doesn't have a battery
[17:54] <ReggieUK> so I'm going to make one for it
[17:55] <ReggieUK> I've got a bunch of psu's with an ldo regulator that is adjustable, I just need to adjust it down to 7.4-8v and then I can feed the camera using any 12v power source
[17:56] <ReggieUK> so that I end up with something like this http://www.astronomiser.co.uk/images/products/ast350ddc.jpg
[17:56] <ReggieUK> although that one is different as it has the vreg in the empty battery pack
[17:57] <ReggieUK> and many many many thanks for getting me the measurements Bandit12 :)
[17:57] <ReggieUK> I think it also needs a 10k resistor to pretend to be a thermistor between pins 2 (T) and 3(gnd)
[17:58] <Bandit12> that technical stuff lost me :-) Happy to help
[18:00] <ReggieUK> I was going to buy a cheapo battery and gut it
[18:00] <ReggieUK> but rather than wait 3 days and waste ??5 I thought I'd have a go at making one
[18:01] <ReggieUK> I have a bag of polymorph and a kettle full of hot water, fun times :D
[18:02] <Bandit12> sounds like it, i should really buy another battery damn thing runs out just when i don't want it to.
[18:03] <ReggieUK> this camera will probably end up strapped to a telescope and be pointing at the sky for hours at a time
[18:03] <ReggieUK> 900mah isn't really going to help at all
[18:04] <Bandit12> it can afford to be plugged in then.
[18:04] <ReggieUK> well, it's probably going to cost me next to nothing to make this
[18:04] <ReggieUK> I have all the bits laying around already
[18:04] <Bandit12> thats the best way :-)
