[15:11] <ukscone> anyone know anything about fixing dell inspiron laptops?
[15:11] <ReggieUK> that's a bit vague
[15:11] <ukscone> i've been asked to fix a dell inspiron 1545 that just white screens on power up
[15:12] <ReggieUK> does it have a vga socket?
[15:12] <ukscone> yep
[15:12] <ReggieUK> plug a monitor into it and see what it does on boot then
[15:12] <ukscone> but i don't have a working vga cable atm
[15:12] <ReggieUK> then you're kinda screwed
[15:12] <ukscone> i have to go get one in a bit
[15:12] <ukscone> just wondered if anyone had any ideas other than ram
[15:13] <ukscone> the dvd does seem to power on
[15:13] <ahven> white screen refers to 1) chip itself, 2) screen
[15:13] <ukscone> so i think power is ok. the only thing i can think of is ram, cpu or gpu
[15:13] <ReggieUK> if it comes up blank screen then check the fn keys for the one that switches on the external monitor
[15:13] <ReggieUK> that's about all you can do
[15:14] <ReggieUK> unless you have another laptop with the same chip family in it to test the cpu/ram
[15:14] <ukscone> when i go to the bank to take out rent money i'll pickup a vga cable
[15:14] <IT_Sean> could be a bad LVDS cable
[15:14] <ukscone> i'm not going to try too hard as it's only the deli owners on the corners laptop, not as if it's an important one
[15:15] <ReggieUK> depends how good their chorizo is?
[15:15] <Anppa> a slight tap with a fine-tuning sledgehammer should do it...
[15:15] <ukscone> they have the mexican chirizo and the goya packaged stuff
[15:15] <ukscone> they do do a very nice ham, pepperjack, onion and tomato hero though
[15:16] <ReggieUK> I guess as IT_Sean says, might be worth cracking the bezel/keyboard out to check the screen connector
[15:16] <ukscone> yup
[15:16] <IT_Sean> could be a loose connector, or a cracked cable.
[15:16] <IT_Sean> just be careful, those LVDS cables are fragile.
[15:16] <ukscone> i have some things to do and wife is off work today because of election day so i can't do it today but when everyone is out tomorrow i'll be able to concentrate
[15:20] * Anppa hotglued his CF-hdd back in place to a aspire one yesterday
[15:27] <IT_Sean> Scriew you Adobe. I needed to install FLash. NOT Flash AND Google Chrome. :/
[15:27] * ReggieUK was trying to make a battery eliminator using polymorph yesterday
[15:28] * ReggieUK needs solderable contacts
[15:29] * ReggieUK wonders if unetched pcb would do the job?
[15:30] * ReggieUK possibly has an epiphany
[15:30] <ReggieUK> brass plate/picture hooks
[15:31] <Anppa> ReggieUK, this canon battery thingy?
[15:31] <ReggieUK> yes
[15:31] <Anppa> I was thinking that one could etch the pcb and add the resistor & stuff on the other side
[15:31] * jzu (~jzu@camisole.opentrust.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 258 seconds)
[15:32] <Anppa> would a right-sized pcb as such stay in place mechanically, there was a groove of some kind?
[15:32] <Anppa> the contacts in a battery look like oversized pcb pads anyway
[15:33] <ReggieUK> well, with the method I'm using it's up to me how thick I make the casing, at that flat edge I *need* a lip either side of each terminal, I Think they use that to stop shorts
[15:33] <ReggieUK> but fixing the board in place isn't an issue
[15:33] <Anppa> I'm thinking about building one myself as well
[15:34] <ReggieUK> I made a balsa wood frame and then rolled the polymorph flat with a rolling pin
[15:34] <Anppa> on the camera side, there are just these three extending thingys that touch the battery contact-pads, how would it short?
[15:35] <ReggieUK> well, the gap is only 3mm between terminals
[15:35] <ReggieUK> if you don't get the case dead straight down both edges then there is a chance that you'll get something contacting the wrong terminal
[15:36] <ReggieUK> but agreed, actually shorting something would be quite difficult
[15:36] <ReggieUK> you'd have to have a really wonky battery
[15:36] <Anppa> (planning to do some time-lapses with AE bracketing to get more dynamic range)
[15:36] <ReggieUK> nice
[15:36] <IT_Sean> battery eliminator?
[15:37] <Anppa> yep
[15:37] <ReggieUK> I'm trying to work out whether I have to use the AEB settings in the chdk firmware to do long exposure (>64seconds)
[15:37] <Anppa> which camera you have?
[15:37] <IT_Sean> what's that?
[15:37] <ReggieUK> IT_Sean, yeah, you use a dummy battery connected to a V-regulator and a pwoer source of your choosing
[15:37] <ReggieUK> I have a 400d and a 450d
[15:37] <Anppa> annoyingly there's no "dc in" plug
[15:38] <Anppa> I did a wired remote trigger out of a nokia hands-free
[15:38] <ReggieUK> well, there is, but you have to purchase a retail unit from canon and it's expensive
[15:38] <Anppa> had a suitable plug and a button already :D
[15:38] <ReggieUK> I don't need a remote trigger
[15:38] <IT_Sean> oooooooooooooohhhh
[15:38] <ReggieUK> I just need an intervalometer that will take 10 or 20 shots in a row at anything upto 7minutes per shot
[15:39] <Anppa> but through operating that from a computer, you could do timed bulb exposures
[15:39] <IT_Sean> Basically, wiring a wall transformer to the battery contacts.
[15:39] <ReggieUK> I don't think the 400d lets you do it
[15:39] <ReggieUK> IT_Sean, that's one way of using it :)
[15:39] <IT_Sean> kinky.
[15:39] <Anppa> works on 350D
[15:39] <Anppa> http://antti.hopto.org/a/camera/remote/
[15:39] <ReggieUK> personally I will be using a 7ah 12v battery
[15:40] <ReggieUK> I know you can do bulb exposures but I didn't the canon utilities let you do it
[15:40] <ReggieUK> I know you can on the 450d
[15:40] <Anppa> hmm... does gphoto2 let you bulb away via usb?
[15:40] <ReggieUK> gphoto? is that a windows app?
[15:41] <Anppa> nope
[15:43] <ReggieUK> covington says I need a shutter cable
[15:43] <ReggieUK> http://www.covingtoninnovations.com/dslr/EOS300Dastro.html
[15:46] * jzu (~jzu@sete.opentrust.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:59] <ReggieUK> Anppa, have you looked at chdk for the 350d?
[16:05] <Anppa> nope, a custom firmware?
[16:05] <ReggieUK> yes
[16:06] <ReggieUK> http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/350D
[16:06] * IT_Sean (~sean@applefritter/IRCStaff/UltimateMacUser1) has left #raspberrypi
[16:08] <Anppa> didn't know 350D was supported, by I last checked years ago
[16:09] <ReggieUK> I didn't know the 400d was supported until the other day
[16:11] <ReggieUK> bbiab
[16:11] * antenagora (~antenagor@ Quit (Quit: Sto andando via)
[16:12] <piofcube> Anyone know of a good (and not extremely costly) hardware that can capture 3xHD/VGA and 3 USB cameras? Being able to switch and use PIP would also be great? I've seen quite a few but they seem to be just composite/HD or firewire and not the mix I need.
