[16:39] <ukscone> IT_Sean: someone must have a hidden camera watching you work to have worked out your methodolgy
[16:39] * IT_Sean wants to retitle that to "How i triage & fix customer trouble tickets" and put it up in his office
[16:39] <ReggieUK> Disco!
[16:40] <ukscone> get down your funky self
[16:41] <IT_Sean> Okay, os, i sent a customer a solution to a problem via email yesterday afternoon. My outgoing emails have a signature that has my full name in it.
[16:41] <IT_Sean> I had a new email on my phone this mrong from that customer: "
[16:41] <IT_Sean> " THanks Paul!"
[16:41] <IT_Sean> ... my name is NOT Paul, nor is it even close to Paul. It doesn't even have the letters P U or L in it.
[16:43] <ukscone> heh and the A is silent
[16:43] <ukscone> perhaps he was using the outer mongolia spelling
[16:44] <IT_Sean> Based on his name, and the company he works for, i am guessing the customer is in India.
[16:45] <IT_Sean> Still no excuse for spelling my name 'Paul'

[17:12] * merlin1991 (~merlin@Maemo/community/cssu/merlin1991) has joined #raspberrypi
[17:12] <merlin1991> is there any concrete information on the "development tool chains"?
[17:15] <ctyler> merlin1991: in most of the distros, you can just grab the tools on the board with yum or apt-get or equivalent. The Pi has sufficient horsepower to do native dev.
[17:16] <merlin1991> and in case I still want to work not on device?
[17:16] <jzu> you mean cross-compiling?
[17:16] <merlin1991> yes
[17:16] <ctyler> there are cross tool chains available in or for most distros
[17:16] <ctyler> why not native?
[17:17] <merlin1991> I'm used to a develop on my pc, use device as testing platform workflow
[17:17] <ReggieUK> because no one owns one yet?
[17:17] <merlin1991> also that ofc :D
[17:18] * mdavey (~chatzilla@62.255.172.253) Quit (Ping timeout: 258 seconds)
[17:18] <jzu> just program on your workstation, and recompile/test/debug on the RPi
[17:18] <ctyler> unless you're using stuff like GPIOs or writing in assembler, pretty much whatever you've written on another platform will work
[17:19] <jzu> that's what I do on the Linksys NSLU2
[17:19] <ReggieUK> you could of course use the cross toolchain to compile gcc or whatever for the device and then test it thoroughly once you get the device
[17:19] <ctyler> *you may be disappointed* in how little difference there is between the raspi platform and other desktop/server platforms
[17:19] <merlin1991> get the device is future music for me, afaik one can't get it yet and there is no such thing as preordering (again afaik)
[17:19] <ctyler> it's a small PC
[17:20] <ReggieUK> or use qemu to debug your stuff until you do own one
[17:21] <ReggieUK> afaik. there is no reason to stop you doing native compilation, you just need to apt-get the stuff :)
[17:21] <jzu> I guess pretty much erverything will work on the RPi (minus Eclipse) :-)
[17:22] <ctyler> yeah, Eclipse is right out until the model G :-)
[17:22] <ReggieUK> depends, if someone ports the supporting libs (might already be ported to armel?)
[17:22] <ctyler> it's a RAM issue
[17:22] <ReggieUK> ahh
[17:22] <merlin1991> I'm just playing with the idea to run a htpc on the raspberrypi with xmbc and stuff
[17:24] * merlin1991 wonders though how realistic that is with 256MiB
[17:25] * IT_Sean (~IT_Sean@applefritter/IRCStaff/UltimateMacUser1) Quit (Quit: Linkinus - http://linkinus.com)
[17:26] <merlin1991> assuming I have a crosscompile toolchain in place, only missing gcc settings, what are the suggested compile options for the arm on the device?
[17:26] <merlin1991> or should I just fly with generic "arm" ?
[17:27] <ctyler> merlin1991: note also that the Fedora ARM build farm is accessible to pretty much anyone, you can submit builds to that
[17:27] <ctyler> merlin1991: optimally, you'll want v6l + vfp
[17:27] <ctyler> don't use thumb
[17:27] <merlin1991> does it break things?
[17:29] <ctyler> so basically: -march=armv6 -mfloat-abi=soft -mfp=vfp
[17:30] * mdavey (~chatzilla@62.255.172.253) has joined #raspberrypi
[17:30] <ctyler> thumb1 doesn't provide any significant advantages. thumb2 does, but v6 doesn't do thumb2, and it's being dropped in v8
[17:31] <merlin1991> why soft floating points?
[17:32] <ctyler> vfp is hard floating point. But to pass function parameters in VFP registers, you need vfp3
[17:32] <ctyler> so you need the 'softfp' abi
[17:33] <Thorn_> is it out yet
[17:33] <ctyler> so those settings will use the floating point for math, but not use the floating point registers for parameter passing
[17:34] <ctyler> Thorn_: the board? we all wish.
[17:35] * merlin1991 feels dumb to ask, but why no use the floating point registers for parameter passing?
[17:35] <ctyler> because the standard for that is based on another VFP design (vfp3)
[17:36] <merlin1991> and the pi uses the vpf design, k
[17:37] <ctyler> basically the hardfp abi (that's not the proper name for it, but the name everyone uses) is for v7+
[17:37] <merlin1991> ah okay
[17:37] <merlin1991> btw are you sure about -mfloat-abi=soft? according to wiki and ggc man I assume -mfloat-abi=softfp would be the way to go?
[17:38] <ctyler> yes, cut'n'paste fail there
[17:39] <ctyler> I was combining from two sources

[23:43] <ukscone> ctyler: and americans are always late for everything
[23:43] <ukscone> they were late for WW1 and WW2 that's why they keep trying to start WW3 so noone can accuse them of being late again if they actually start it :)
