[18:55] <UnderSampled> Any thoughts on rPi based shiva-plug commpetitors?
[18:58] <datagutt> thats a good idea..
[19:01] <UnderSampled> I wonder how much it would cost to produce wall-plug cases
[19:02] <UnderSampled> that could be an interesting business
[19:02] <UnderSampled> anyone see this today on hackaday?
[19:02] <UnderSampled> http://www.elinux.org/RCA_DSB772WE
[19:03] <RITRedbeard> Whoa, I didn't check Hackaday yet today.

[20:13] <UnderSampled> RITRedbeard: what do you think?
[20:28] <RITRedbeard> underSampled: sorry, was AFK talking on phone
[20:28] <UnderSampled> np
[20:30] <RITRedbeard> I think it's great that we can have such powerful devices, DSPs, etc... at low price point; but the thing that really sucks about Broadcom is they're lip tight about datasheets and such.
[20:31] <UnderSampled> RITRedbeard: is there much of a difference in the openness of the rPi and that product I linked?
[20:31] <RITRedbeard> Even with Raspberry Pi we're gonna be stuck to some binary glob for GPU/DSP/limited no API; however with Raspberry Pi atleast there is going to be a community and pool of knowledge and you know what you're getting.
[20:33] <UnderSampled> true
[20:34] <RITRedbeard> Which is a shame because I believe ARM and derivatives can make a dent in consumer marketplace but not if AMD beats them there for power consumption and size first with Llano and upcoming APUs.
[20:34] * Jaya_the_Cat (~jaya@unaffiliated/jaya-the-cat/x-0885195) Quit (Quit: This computer has gone to sleep)
[20:36] <UnderSampled> what can the DSP do?
[20:36] * UnderSampled (~UnderSamp@cpe-174-097-224-028.nc.res.rr.com) Quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[20:36] <RITRedbeard> However, much of it has to do with marketing. I'm under the strict belief that Macbook/Apple products are "pieces of shit" when compared to similar products.
[20:37] <RITRedbeard> The hardware is always behind and you're paying a price premium for a symbol but damn is that symbol marketed EXTREMELY well to the masses.
[20:38] <RITRedbeard> I think being engineer/computer scientist also makes my views bit biased because when I look at it that way, everything looks like an engineering/DIY problem that can be rectified better, so I'm in a big minority. :)

[20:39] <RITRedbeard> Not sure about the DSP
[20:40] <RITRedbeard> Heh heh.
[20:46] <UnderSampled> I bet it won't take long before someone puts an rPi and a kinect on a roomba

[21:20] <UnderSampled> hello ukscone
[21:20] * UnderSampled is now known as usbiscuit
[21:21] <ukscone> :)
[21:22] * usbiscuit is now known as UnderSampled
[21:22] <UnderSampled> ukscone: you can take that name whenever you come over here
[21:23] <ukscone> i'm already here
[21:23] <ukscone> have been for 20 years for my sins in a previous life
[21:24] <UnderSampled> so why do you call yourself uk?
[21:24] <ukscone> i have several handles i use but for non-nefarious activities i stick with ukscone or my name
[21:25] <ukscone> although i did stop using ukscone for a few years as i wasn't in that type of mood for a while
[21:27] * ukscone (~Russell@cpe-68-173-234-162.nyc.res.rr.com) has left #raspberrypi
[21:27] * ukscone (~Russell@cpe-68-173-234-162.nyc.res.rr.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[21:28] <UnderSampled> ukscone: so, when did you come up with ukscone?
[21:29] <ukscone> 1999 give or take a month although in the area IRL i'd been known as scone for years
[21:30] <ukscone> but i needed a handle for a chat room/im service and too many stephen cone's in the world so scone was taken so ukscone it was
[21:33] <UnderSampled> that's quite a few years of use
[21:33] <UnderSampled> where'd the "uk" come from?
[21:33] <ukscone> i'm british
[21:36] <UnderSampled> it is a cool name :)
[21:38] <RITRedbeard> ukscone: semantics - difference between British and English?
[21:38] <Laurenceb_> all of uk rather than england
[21:41] <ukscone> Laurenceb_: i'm actually english (born and 1 parent english) and welsh (1 parent welsh) and a tiny bit of scottish (2 grandparents scottish) but i use english, british as interchangable so as not to confuse the foreigners -- i class myself as english-welsh
[21:42] <ukscone> but my passport says british-english
[21:42] * Laurenceb_ is irish/scottish :P
[21:43] <ukscone> Laurenceb_: oh well you can't help it :D
[21:43] <Laurenceb_> lmao
[21:44] <ukscone> 1 set of parents live on the isle of lewis but even though they have been there 25 yeears their kids kids kids will still be classified outsiders :)
[22:11] <RITRedbeard> Does anyone else here mess with other embedded stuff similar to Raspberry Pi?
[22:12] <RITRedbeard> I was thinking that we should create a table of benchmarks, features, and other metrics
[22:13] <ukscone> RITRedbeard: i mess with zipit z2's which are 315mhz pxa270s (arm) but nothing closer than that
[22:17] <RITRedbeard> Hmmm.
[22:17] <RITRedbeard> Might be interesting to have a baseline.
[22:18] <UnderSampled> I'm assuming you are only counting devices that run linux?
[22:20] <UnderSampled> RITRedbeard: I've wondered about this one: http://www.digi.com/products/wireless-wired-embedded-solutions/solutions-on-module/digi-connect/digiconnectme9210#overview
[22:20] <UnderSampled> so tiny!
[22:20] <RITRedbeard> I have a bifferboard (150MHz RDC, 486DX compatible ISA)
[22:20] <RITRedbeard> UnderSampled, yeah.
[22:24] <UnderSampled> www.amazon.com/Digital-3-Amp-Outlet-All-Purpose-Timer/dp/B000Y1G9G4%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q%26tag%3Dduckduckgo-z-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000Y1G9G4
[22:24] <UnderSampled> potential rPi plug case?
[22:24] <UnderSampled> or too small?
[22:27] <RITRedbeard> hmmm
[22:27] <RITRedbeard> depends on what extra hardware you want to stick in there
