[0:39] <azalyn> Thorn_: lolz. yes, it's me. i said the same thing yesterday. "hey, it's thorn from iodoom3!"
[0:40] * zabomber (~zabomber@203-219-247-88.static.tpgi.com.au) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:41] <zabomber> !w Melbourne
[0:42] <Thorn_> azalyn: haha
[0:48] <WASDx> Thorn_: are you making the R-pi in blender? :)
[0:49] <Thorn_> Uh, I spent a few seconds on it
[0:49] <Thorn_> http://thoronir.net/RaspberryPi/Pi_Render01.png not very long tho
[0:50] <WASDx> better than i can ever make
[0:50] <Thorn_> ?
[0:50] <Thorn_> the trick to blender is
[0:50] <Thorn_> stop trying to learn and do things the 'proper' way
[0:50] <RaspberryAlison> the trick to blender is
[0:51] <Thorn_> once you get passed that, you just keep taking shortcuts to get to your end result :P
[0:51] <RaspberryAlison> defenestrate it and use sketchup
[0:51] <Thorn_> pfft
[0:51] <Thorn_> don't listen to the heresy above
[0:51] <WASDx> googles ketchup
[0:52] * iMatttt (~imatttt@cpc3-farn4-0-0-cust594.6-2.cable.virginmedia.com) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:52] * Jarii (~Jarii@host102-135-dynamic.20-79-r.retail.telecomitalia.it) Quit (Quit: I forgot how to forget)
[0:52] <WASDx> -.- this website is using a custom downloader made in flash
[0:52] <Shift_> blender is surprisingly easy to use, once you drop your expectations about how it 'should' work.
[0:53] <Thorn_> yup
[0:53] <RaspberryAlison> Shift_: Blender is fucking impossible to use....
[0:54] <Thorn_> did you spend more than 30 seconds?
[0:54] <Thorn_> have you tried it since the 2.5 ui overhaul ?
[0:54] <WASDx> I managed to make this http://i.imgur.com/etssC.jpg
[0:54] <Shift_> though it's not like riding a bike... if you don't use it for a while, it's easy to forget all the shortcuts.
[0:54] <WASDx> I used it a year ago with 2.49b or something, that image was made in the latest version
[0:54] <RaspberryAlison> Thorn_: I tried it this spring
[0:54] <Thorn_> millions of people use blender on a daily basis, just as millions use sketchup, zbrush, or any other tool, so saying it's 'impossible' to use is a bit unfounded
[0:55] <RaspberryAlison> I can't get my head around how the learning curve is near-vertical.
[0:55] <Shift_> lol
[0:56] <Shift_> what are you struggling with?
[0:56] <RaspberryAlison> Then again, I had the same problem with irssi five years ago
[0:56] * RITRedbeard (~RITReadbe@c-68-37-165-37.hsd1.nj.comcast.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:57] <RaspberryAlison> Shift_: Everything, really. I use 3D modelling at all little enough that I don't bother wasting my time with anything less than immediately intuitive.

[3:30] <FloatingGoat> you know what would be cool
[3:30] <FloatingGoat> if raspberry pi had HDMI or at lease composite inputs
[3:30] <FloatingGoat> or is that already possible
[3:31] <FloatingGoat> but it would just ad to the ton of useful features
[3:31] <Dagger3> it's not possible... I'm pretty sure the SoC doesn't support it
[3:31] <Dagger3> (but that has been asked about a million times on the forums if you want an official statement about it)
[3:33] <FloatingGoat> really?
[3:33] <FloatingGoat> but its fine
[3:33] <FloatingGoat> maybe in the future
[3:34] <FloatingGoat> it would totally crush HD capture cards
[3:34] <Dagger3> I'm pretty sure I've read it a million times. maybe I was just reading the same post over and over...
[3:34] <FloatingGoat> does soc support ICS?
[3:38] <FloatingGoat> Dagger3, or do you know
[3:38] <FloatingGoat> to the forums I go!

[4:06] * ReggieUK (ReggieUK@5aca566d.bb.sky.com) Quit ()
[4:18] <Thorn_> is it out yet
[4:19] <Thorn_> Shift_: Was there ever a windows build of qemu that emulated the pi cpu?
[4:20] <Shift_> yeah, I had one built, so I am sure there are some out there somewhere.
[4:20] <Thorn_> hmm, k
[4:21] <Thorn_> I dont run linux that often anymore, so I'm thinking either qemu in a linux VM, or check out qemu on windows
[4:21] <Shift_> I used virtualbox for the whole tutorial.
[4:21] <Thorn_> lol.
[4:22] * FloatingGoat (~FloatingG@97-92-90-238.dhcp.roch.mn.charter.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[4:22] <Shift_> Didn't see any difference between that and actually booting into ubuntu.
[4:22] <Thorn_> going to give it a bash again now that the pi is close to release
[4:23] <Thorn_> give it a bash
[4:23] <Thorn_> does that almost qualify as a pun?
[4:23] <Shift_> almost, yes.
[4:25] <Shift_> given that it's close to release, you might as well wait
[4:25] <Thorn_> no
[4:25] <Thorn_> gotta be first
[4:25] <Shift_> that qemu business is a bit of a time waste
[4:26] <Shift_> (until the device is actually out... once it is, I am sure that qemu will be quite handy)
[4:26] <Thorn_> gotta be first!!
[4:26] <Shift_> first what!?
[4:26] <Thorn_> first everything!!
[4:27] <Shift_> O_o
[4:27] <Thorn_> actually qemu will be useful because i want to toy with some ARM asm
[4:27] <Shift_> yup, not many assemblers though
[4:27] <Thorn_> but i need virtualbox/a linux environment anyway because i want to toy with writing kernel drivers ,so i have a basic grasp of how to handle the GPIO when we get the boards
[4:30] <Shift_> good idea

[4:57] * Branden is now known as Shy
[5:05] <Thorn_> in any case, they provided no hardware information yet
[5:05] <Thorn_> how is one even supposed to access the GPIO on the pi at the kernel level without some basic information
[5:06] * UnaClocker (~unaclocke@24-113-85-150.wavecable.com) Quit (Quit: Leaving...)
[5:09] * curlybob (~blue@cpc3-ward8-2-0-cust346.10-2.cable.virginmedia.com) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[5:16] <Shift_> by waiting until the information is available
[5:16] <Thorn_> you're assuming they'll make that information available
[5:16] <Thorn_> but there's an extremely high chance they wont
[5:17] <Thorn_> they'll wait for everyone to rush to order the boards
[5:17] <Thorn_> then, once they've made their money, they'll release no information so you can't actually do anything with the boards
[5:17] <Thorn_> it's all a conspiracy
[5:20] * FloatingGoat (~FloatingG@97-92-90-238.dhcp.roch.mn.charter.com) has joined #raspberrypi

[8:37] <piofcube> again? not good
[8:39] <Thorn_> alright - who crashed it
[8:39] <Thorn_> ohhh back up
[8:42] <Thorn_> yup, still takes silly amounts of time to compile stuff

[8:42] <Thorn_> er

[8:42] <Thorn_> ncurses
[8:42] <Thorn_> real: 26m 21.81s
[8:49] <piofcube> oooh... dynamic MMC over SPI/GPIO... provides a sysfs interface to dynamically create and destroy GPIO-based MMC/SD card interfaces. Allows a MMC to be used via GPIO. I might be able to use that :-)
[8:49] <Thorn_> nice
[8:49] * kcj (~casey@unaffiliated/kcj1993) has joined #raspberrypi
[8:51] <piofcube> Would be very interesting to get into doing projects with memory... Probs not be very fast but lots of fun trying it
[8:52] <Thorn_> extra ram over gpio :P
[8:53] <piofcube> Yeah or at the very least an extra SD slot as it supports SD interface also
[8:54] <Thorn_> cool
[8:54] <Thorn_> sdcard in the sd holder
[8:54] <Thorn_> sdcard over gpio
[8:54] <piofcube> Would be better than using USB ;-)
[8:54] <Thorn_> anyone ever tried RAID on two sd cards? :P
[8:55] <piofcube> LOL... I hadn't even thought of it... would be a good way to make an automatic SD card duplicator :P
