[1:12] <stevepdp> hello
[1:15] * plasmab (~stephen@client-86-31-137-249.oxfd.adsl.virginmedia.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:16] <plasmab> chocolate dipped bacon that tasty?
[1:16] <ReggieUK> that sounds very tasty
[1:16] <plasmab> im more of a maple syrup kinda guy
[1:18] <plasmab> anyone got wild plans for the Pi when they get their hands on one (or 5)
[1:20] <wiiguy> watch hd movies ? :p
[1:21] <plasmab> yeah see thats not really what i mean
[1:21] <merlin1991> plasmab: build a cluster and control a rocket with it?
[1:22] <plasmab> controlling a rocket is the sort of think im talking about.
[1:22] <plasmab> thing even
[1:22] <merlin1991> though my main plan is to use a usb to powerline adapter and build a loneworks based home automation system into my flat :)
[1:22] <plasmab> yeah i was considering using one to control my central heating
[1:23] <merlin1991> the pi is going to control everything including door locks :D
[1:23] <plasmab> from my iphone
[1:23] <xlq> I might have a go at receiving PSK31 with it.
[1:23] <plasmab> im also thinking of sticking one in a BBC B and using it via the tube interface
[1:23] <merlin1991> and when I got the hardware in place I can start developing an ai that locks me out one day :P
[1:24] <plasmab> hehe
[1:24] <plasmab> "HAL, let me in"
[1:24] <wiiguy> meh maybe i will make it so i can set massive fireworks from a distance :)
[1:24] <wiiguy> for next year
[1:24] <merlin1991> though for now I'm happy to build it to control light, heating and everything else I can hook up :)
[1:25] <plasmab> heating and light are my main ones
[1:25] <merlin1991> what hardware/protocol do you plan on using?
[1:25] <merlin1991> and do you want to have the pi talk via wireless or over the powerline?
[1:26] <wwalker> plasmab: robotics control platform (I'm hoping the Gertboard is available at the same time)
[1:27] <wwalker> need a 3 axis gyro and a 3 axis accelerometer.
[1:27] <plasmab> meh.. i'm not gonna touch gertboard. i'll make my own boards for the Pi. Gertboard looks horribly low tech
[1:31] <wwalker> I want something standard so that I can tell kids or schools to buy it. low tech, maybe. low cost and standard is the answer for me.
[1:32] <plasmab> find with the standard. .but for goodness sakes use surface mount. through hole is messy
[1:32] <wwalker> with an IMU board, could fly a plane or rocket rather well.
[1:33] <wwalker> plasmab: but schools and individuals rarely have the tech to probperly build SMT stuff
[1:33] <plasmab> *Sigh*. Surface mount is waaaay easier than through hole.
[1:34] <plasmab> its the same tech minus the drill
[1:34] <plasmab> i lie.. you need a pair of tweezers.
[1:38] <plasmab> we really need to start pushing surface mount to entry level folks. its the main reason folk dont play around with electronics anymore. I'm not talking 200 pin BGA chips. just get people soldering 1206 surface mount resistors
[1:39] <xlq> Agreed. My soldering skill is terrible.
[1:51] <wwalker> plasmab: too many SMT devices have inaccessible leads especially CPUs and connectors
[1:51] <wwalker> plasmab: and 8th grade boys generally don't have the fine motor skills for alinging things to 0.005" accuracy.
[1:52] <plasmab> wwalker, i'm really not talking about that scale. just simple SMT
[1:52] <plasmab> you can get PIC micros that are very easily soldered down
[1:52] <plasmab> VQ44 is not tough
[1:53] <plasmab> and the skills are more readily applicable to the real world
[1:53] <wwalker> VQ44 :)
[1:54] <wwalker> I had to mod play stations at one job. soldering wires onto leads that are 0.012 wide....or 0.007 I don't rember now. THAT SUCKED
[1:54] <wwalker> PS2s
[1:54] <plasmab> yeah that isnt easy. but there are surface mount packages available that are easy
[1:56] <plasmab> the problem with surface mount is that teachers think its hard so students never try
[1:57] <plasmab> heck i did a phd in an electronics department and the lecturers wouldnt touch surface mount.
[1:58] <IT_Sean> to be fair... it's not waht i'd call "Easy"
[1:59] <wwalker> again, you need the right equipment. temp controlled iron. lighted magnifying glass. Pb solder with resin
[1:59] <plasmab> really? why need the temp controlled iron? or the pb solder? magnifying glass is handy for smaller packages but for a 1206 resistor its really not needed
[2:00] <plasmab> i solder down 0603 happily without a magnifying glass
[2:00] <plasmab> mostly what you need is a pair of tweezers
[2:01] <plasmab> and some good flux
[2:04] <plasmab> i guess what im trying to say is that lots of kids would love to do electronics and do surface mount if we didnt just tell them its too hard.

[2:14] <xlq> So #6 is at ??488 while #5 is at ??510. Interesting.
[2:15] * Hopsy (~kvirc@77.62.41.72) Quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[2:16] <kabby> makes sense ur getting close to the first one now so the low numbers are more valuable
[2:17] <xlq> Hmm.
[2:17] <xlq> 5 is a human-ish number, too (5 fingers).
[2:22] * xlq (~apropos@89-168-178-167.dynamic.dsl.as9105.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 255 seconds)
[2:27] * cerberos (~cerberos@118.173.93.250.adsl.dynamic.totbb.net) Quit (Quit: cerberos)
[2:31] <wwalker> but being able to say "I got #10, the FIRST one realeased outside the Raspberry Pi group" makes #10 better than # 1.
[2:31] <wwalker> assuming they ship them as soon as the auction is over
[2:32] <piofcube> They would have to, to comply with eBay rules ;-)
[2:34] <piofcube> Thankfully they aren't going to auction all of the first batch of boards...
[2:39] <kabby> but one is the first one produced to be sold
[2:40] <plasmab> when are we expecting preorders? or arent we?
[2:40] <piofcube> yeah... that's okay but I wouldn't like to think the first 10K of boards would be auctioned. Who knows how much they'd go for..
[2:42] * plasmab (~stephen@client-86-31-137-249.oxfd.adsl.virginmedia.com) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[2:54] <LiENUS> comply with ebay rules?
[2:54] <LiENUS> what ebay rules?
[2:54] <piofcube> If you sell on eBay you must ship the item within a certain time limit once the auction is over... I think it is 2 working days but not sure now-a-days
[2:55] <LiENUS> ah
[2:55] <LiENUS> yeah my shit aint here yet that i ordered on the 16th
[2:55] <LiENUS> pretty sure they didnt ship it when they said
[2:56] <LiENUS> oh they claim they did
[2:56] <LiENUS> I am glad to tell you that we have sent out your item(s) this afternoon by
[2:56] <LiENUS> China Post and it will take 12-20 working days to USA,U.K.,Canada,Australia
[2:56] <LiENUS> ...
[2:58] <piofcube> I'm still waiting for my Graphics card from Hong Kong
[2:58] <LiENUS> lol
[2:58] <LiENUS> how long ago you order?
[2:58] <piofcube> Would have been quicker to ask my Brother to drop it in next time he's back in the UK LOL
[2:59] <piofcube> 18th I think
[3:01] <LiENUS> so looks like on the first 5 boards they'll make 5063 lbs
[3:02] * curlybob (~blue@cpc3-ward8-2-0-cust346.10-2.cable.virginmedia.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[3:02] <Thorn_> lbs?
[3:02] <Thorn_> weight pounds and sterling pound abbreviations are not interchangable :P
[3:03] <LiENUS> lol yeah but it makes it more fun
[3:03] <piofcube> I'll have 5063 lbs of pound coins please ;-)
[3:03] <LiENUS> i like to imagine the winner of board #10 will be shipping 1900 lbs of lead to the raspberry pi foundation
[3:04] <LiENUS> and that for some reason they'll be overjoyed to be receiving this
