[1:03] <Donnetje> Hi
[1:03] <piless> yes
[1:04] <passstab> yes
[1:04] <Donnetje> Does that just put me at the end of the Farnell queue?
[1:04] <piless> yes

[1:06] <Donnetje> RS has been awfully quiet after saying I'm in their first batch and updating my contact info though
[1:06] <piless> I think RS's policy is to wait till they actually have them in stock before they sell them.
[1:07] <Donnetje> Hmm, but they could at least mail me that :p

[1:08] <Donnetje> I was asked to update my contact details 2 weeks ago, and didn't hear from them after that

[1:15] <piless> Donnetje: Did you get an email similar to this, Welcome to the latest Raspberry Pi update from RS! We???ve had a lot of questions about when you will be able to place orders for a Raspberry Pi from RS. When the Raspberry Pi was launched we decided not to take orders and payment up front until we knew when stock would be available and be in a position to give you accurate delivery information. With the first batch of boards due t

[1:26] <Dagger2> and they don't ever bother to publish their key fingerprints on the main site (or even sign their email, so you just can't check that for authenticity), so you basically just have to take it all on faith

[1:31] <Donnetje> Not to pay yet
[1:31] <piless> Da|Mummy: They're just saying that they'll do it soonish
[1:32] <piless> WAIT
[1:32] <piless> SpeedEvil: Your bank actually warns you it's about to charge you an overdraft fee?!

[5:27] <ShiftPlusOne> Do you have to fiddle around much with the source code to get these things running, or is it mostly just making sure the libraries are available and compiling?
[5:31] <ReggieUK> for which ShiftPlusOne?
[5:31] <ReggieUK> compiling <random software> for the pi?
[5:32] <ShiftPlusOne> random software and the emulators which ukscone has been demoing
[5:32] <huene> !w
[5:32] <PiBot> huene: in Linz, Upper Austria. Temp 8??C. Condition: Mostly Cloudy, Humidity: 76%.
[5:33] <ReggieUK> make sure the headers and libs are available in general but you may have to supply extra libs (and compile those too)
[5:33] <ReggieUK> as we found out with whatever it was you were messing with t'other night
[5:34] * mrcan_ is now known as mrcan-afk
[5:35] <ReggieUK> tbh as it's the pi and *everything* pretty much works already, then there shouldn't be much you'd have to fiddle with in source code
[5:35] <ShiftPlusOne> fair enough
[5:36] <ReggieUK> on 'more' embedded devices you might have to arse around with, for instance, re-mapping buttons, or you might just have a plain old frame buffer and might need to re-do the gfx output for simple put_pixel stuff
[5:36] <ukscone> ShiftPlusOne: some times
[5:37] <ShiftPlusOne> so far what has been really annoying is was working with different build systems. Some people are using scons, cmake, autotools and there were a few others I stumbled upon.... so to compile just one damn library, I need to learn all these different build systems which the dependencies require (because they all required some tweaking to compile)...
[5:37] <ukscone> mostly just make sure i have the libs built and installed
[5:37] <ReggieUK> ShiftPlusOne, you're going to find that everywhere unfortunately
[5:37] <ukscone> and add somee gcc options and fix the odd bit of poor coding
[5:37] <ReggieUK> it's a massive pita
[5:37] * Milos|Netbook (Milos@pdpc/supporter/student/milos) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[5:38] <ReggieUK> cos autocrap isn't actually part of the build system itself, it's just crap people use to configure their software, regardless of your build system
[5:38] <ReggieUK> so it could mean drilling through the aclocal generated stuff
[5:39] <ReggieUK> the only thing to really do is try stuff, see what works and go from there
[5:39] <ReggieUK> everything will be different
[5:39] <ReggieUK> but you can start to recognise what you need
[5:39] <ShiftPlusOne> yeah, that has been the biggest pain so far
[5:39] <ReggieUK> like if there's an autogen.sh
[5:39] <ukscone> i had an interesting one today -- a header in the program contained several variables that wer in system headers
[5:39] <ReggieUK> definitely run that :D
[5:40] <ReggieUK> ShiftPlusOne had that the other night
[5:40] <ukscone> i ended up having to go through 100 files adding r to the variable name
[5:40] <ReggieUK> lib math I think it was
[5:40] <ReggieUK> pretty integral part of C really :D
[5:40] <ReggieUK> and it couldn't find it
[5:40] <ReggieUK> ouch
[5:40] <ukscone> this was in some header i'd never seen before buried about 10 layers deep
[5:40] <ShiftPlusOne> gah
[5:41] <ShiftPlusOne> I hate other people's source code =(
[5:41] <ShiftPlusOne> *peoples'
[5:41] <ReggieUK> if theres something really, really stupid missing, I have been known to lift a method off the net to replace it
[5:41] <ReggieUK> screw the missing Fscking header
[5:41] <ukscone> today i have had to use cmake, scons, autoconf and a stupid bash script that pretended to be configure
[5:42] <ReggieUK> the system we use to build minifs for the parrot photoframe is pretty good with all of that
[5:42] <ReggieUK> very flexible
[5:43] <ReggieUK> but you've got to know what it needs
[5:43] <ShiftPlusOne> what's the general opinion on cmake?
[5:43] <Thorn_> poop > cmake > autotools > scons
[5:43] <Thorn_> all build systems are bad tbh
[5:44] <Thorn_> and imo it can be a real pain in the ass if you need windows support
[5:44] <ShiftPlusOne> I ask because cmake seems to just work regardless of the platform (so far)
[5:45] <ShiftPlusOne> but it adds this whole other level of wizardry which can complicate things
[5:45] <ukscone> i hate all the "helper" systems. give me a plain makefile any day -- cmake etc are craptastic
[5:46] <ReggieUK> here's a typical 'configure' function for minifs
[5:46] <ReggieUK> http://pastebin.com/6UGsDaXb
[5:46] <Thorn_> have fun writing a plain makefile that works on all platforms
[5:46] <Thorn_> (for a project with many dependencies, that is)
[5:46] <ukscone> ReggieUK: sod crossplatform. if they don't use what i use then screw 'em
[5:46] <ukscone> :)
[5:46] <ReggieUK> :)
[5:47] <Thorn_> and that is why the world should stop resisting and we should all agree windows is the superior standard :)
[5:47] <ReggieUK> well, we're really lucky as the guy who wrote minifs is just plain excellent
[5:47] <ukscone> Thorn_: nope everyone should just own what i am using. arm netbook

[8:15] <des2> It apparently uses a Cortex A9

[8:21] <_av500_> there are so many random SoCs out of china these days
[8:22] <_av500_> and they each come under 5 different names
[8:22] <Lerc> Yeah The only reference to VI6131 I found were about this box.
[8:24] <_av500_> as with all these products, its a minimal, buggy android implementation with no upgrade path
[8:24] <_av500_> but its cheap
[8:25] <Lerc> Well you don't actually keep android on it of course.

[8:27] <_av500_> given the usual lack of kernel sources and SoC docs
[8:30] <des2> There a few devices like that in the $50-100 US range
[8:30] <Lerc> Well in the short term you keep the android kernel and put linux on top. That would be enough to get you framebuffer X which is where things are at now with the R-PI.
[8:31] <_av500_> and in the longterm you just move on to the next $100 product in 6 month :)
[8:32] <_av500_> get the melee box, the A10 inside has kernel source and even some docs
[8:32] <_av500_> and there is already a bunch of people that try to tinker with it
[8:33] <Lerc> but that's why finding out what the chip is exactly is important. The VI6131 may be a A10 with a different name.
