[0:01] <plugwash> The diff we needed to build the debian ghc package for raspbian can be found at http://debdiffs.raspbian.org/main/g/ghc/ghc_7.4.1-3+rpi1.debdiff
[0:03] <juliend> why compil ghc on raspbian ? it already compiled
[0:03] * S0-2 is now known as SgrA
[0:05] <shiftplusone> juliend, I had everything set up for arch, so I thought ghc would be trivial to compile and install.
[0:05] <shiftplusone> I've just switched to raspbian though... no point re-inventing the wheel.
[0:06] * davezZz (~daveace@unaffiliated/daveace) Quit ()
[0:06] * hyperair (~hyperair@ubuntu/member/hyperair) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:07] <shiftplusone> And I am running into the same problem as you, since my cross-compiling setup (scratchbox2) uses qemu for some things
[0:07] <johnc-> anybody know how I can disable the desktop environment but still run X on startup?
[0:08] <johnc-> I wanna drop the desktop environment and just run a single fullscreen GTK app on startup
[0:08] <shiftplusone> I'd roll my own .xinitrc and modify inittab accordingly.
[0:08] <plugwash> mmm, we native build stuff for raspbian but we have the luxury of having armv7 hardware available
[0:09] <plugwash> which means we can use debian armhf stuff to break build dependency loops
[0:10] <shiftplusone> ah, nice
[0:10] <shiftplusone> johnc-, this sort of thing http://www.shellperson.net/autostart-x-without-gdm/
[0:10] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable237.145-19-135.mc.videotron.ca) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[0:11] <ShorTie> doesn't kdm control what desktop you go into
[0:11] <juliend> i'm not understand all... and it's possible to create gitit deb package for raspbian ? gitit deb exist on debian
[0:11] * sraue (~stephan@xbmc/staff/sraue) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:13] <johnc-> shiftplusone: so, I should use raspi-config to disable the desktop environment and start from that guide, changing it how I need to?
[0:13] <shiftplusone> johnc-, yeah, but that guide says to switch to mingetty, for some reason, which I don't think you need to do.
[0:13] <plugwash> juliend, it looks like the version of gitit currently in wheezy and jessie doesn't support arm and the version in sid is blocked from migrating to jessie by the ghc transition
[0:13] <shiftplusone> it was just the first thing that popped up in google.
[0:14] <plugwash> gitit will probablly be in raspbian jessie eventually but I can't give you any ETA, it depends on how long it takes the debian ghc transition to complete, then how long it takes us to beat the new ghc into shape for raspbian etc
[0:14] * mike_af (~mike_af@50-77-49-46-static.hfc.comcastbusiness.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving...)
[0:15] <shiftplusone> johnc-, the autologin section is better here http://elinux.org/RPi_Debian_Auto_Login
[0:15] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable228.184-179-173.mc.videotron.ca) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:15] <johnc-> I can't even find how the pi is starting lxde currently
[0:15] <johnc-> if it's part of startx or not
[0:15] * oldtopman (~oldtopman@unaffiliated/oldtopman) Quit (Read error: Operation timed out)
[0:15] <shiftplusone> johnc-, currently, it's using lightdm
[0:15] <plugwash> The raspberry pi foundation raspbian image uses lightdm
[0:15] * Q48VW (~Jacob@adsl-71-158-174-173.dsl.rcsntx.sbcglobal.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:15] <johnc-> well I can't see how it's starting that then :P
[0:16] <shiftplusone> johnc-, normal init script
[0:16] <shiftplusone> /etc/init.d/lightdm probably
[0:16] <juliend> plugwash: oh yes, I have not check plateforme... i just see gitit exist,I forget arm :-)
[0:16] <Q48VW> Hey dudes, I've been having some problems with my Pi, more specifically with wifi.
[0:17] <juliend> plugwash: raspbian have stable and testing repository? maybe unstable ? and find gitit in unstable repository ?
[0:17] * simonjackson (~simonwjac@128-79-207-130.hfc.dyn.abo.bbox.fr) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:17] <johnc-> alright, thanks for the pointers :)
[0:18] <shiftplusone> johnc-, you can disable it in raspi-config, do the auto-login thing here http://elinux.org/RPi_Debian_Auto_Login, then start from step 2 here http://www.shellperson.net/autostart-x-without-gdm/ , but modify as you need to
[0:18] * savid (~savid@cpe-76-183-56-246.tx.res.rr.com) Quit (Quit: Ex-Chat)
[0:19] <shiftplusone> in step 2 change /dev/tty6 to /dev/tty1 to match the elinux instructions
[0:19] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable228.184-179-173.mc.videotron.ca) Quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
[0:20] * suehle (~rsuehle@fedora/suehle) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:21] * averagecase (~anon@dslb-088-078-157-065.pools.arcor-ip.net) has joined #raspberrypi

[0:22] * simonjackson (~simonwjac@128-79-207-130.hfc.dyn.abo.bbox.fr) Quit (Quit: WeeChat 0.4.1)
[0:23] <Q48VW> shiftplusone, do you know about wireless configurations on the Pi?
[0:24] <shiftplusone> Q48VW, not on raspbian
[0:24] <dagerik> Q48VW: wifi-menu
[0:24] <shiftplusone> wifi-menu is an arch thing
[0:24] <Q48VW> -bash: wifi-menu: command not found
[0:24] <dagerik> state ur distro
[0:25] * CeilingKitten (~CeilingKi@206-248-153-126.dsl.teksavvy.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
[0:25] <shiftplusone> Q48VW, is your wifi stick detected and working properly?
[0:25] <johnc-> shiftplusone: any personal recommendations for a wm?
[0:25] <shiftplusone> johnc-, I am a fan of openbox
[0:26] * [SkG] (~sconde@unaffiliated/skg/x-897332) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:26] <Q48VW> shiftplusone, yeah.
[0:26] * wiiguy (~fake@unaffiliated/wiiguy) Quit (Quit: I just broke my connection, but no worries, we can rebuild it. We have the technology.)
[0:27] <Q48VW> dagerik, wheezy
[0:27] <shiftplusone> Q48VW, there is a utility that will sort of do it for you on the desktop "WiFi Config"
[0:27] <shiftplusone> you can also do it the proper way by modifying interfaces and all that
[0:27] <shiftplusone> Q48VW, http://learn.adafruit.com/adafruits-raspberry-pi-lesson-3-network-setup/setting-up-wifi-with-raspbian
[0:28] <Q48VW> shiftplusone, I have it already configred. It connects to my network with a static IP, and I can ssh into it over LAN, but the Pi doesn't have "internet access"
[0:28] <johnc-> shiftplusone: tyvm :)
[0:28] <shiftplusone> that page has the method with the GUI, but I would click 'Setting up Wifi with the Command Line' and follow those steps
[0:28] <Q48VW> I can't apt-get update or download anything
[0:28] <shiftplusone> oh =/
[0:28] <shiftplusone> no idea then... that's a whole other question.
[0:28] * simonjackson (~simonwjac@128-79-207-130.hfc.dyn.abo.bbox.fr) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:28] <dagerik> Q48VW: what does curl ifconfig.me says?
[0:28] * oldtopman (~oldtopman@unaffiliated/oldtopman) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:29] <gyeben> does anyone have a solution for this: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=50268 ?
[0:29] <Q48VW> dagerik, "curl: (6) Couldn't resolve host 'ifconfig.me'
[0:29] <Q48VW> "
[0:30] <dagerik> Q48VW: try ping 8.8.8.8
[0:30] <dagerik> thats a google owned server
[0:31] <juliend> shiftplusone: I have my toolchain
[0:31] <Q48VW> dagerik, it pings.
[0:31] <dagerik> Q48VW: then it's a dns issue
[0:31] <shiftplusone> juliend, I would give up on gitit for now
[0:31] <Q48VW> How would I go about resolving it
[0:31] <dagerik> or maybe port restrictions on the router?
[0:32] <juliend> and now ? ... i don't know
[0:32] <juliend> ok
[0:32] <dagerik> Q48VW: what does dig ifconfig.me says?
[0:33] <Q48VW> dagerik, "dig: command not found"
[0:33] <dagerik> you know what to do then brotha
[0:33] <dagerik> oh right
[0:33] <dagerik> silly me
[0:33] <Q48VW> wat
[0:33] <Q48VW> I tried sudo-ing it too
[0:33] <dagerik> i was thinking you can install it with apt-get
[0:33] <Q48VW> lol
[0:34] <shiftplusone> oh dear, 'sudo-ing' software?
[0:34] <dagerik> your computer can talk to internet but dns aint working
[0:34] <dagerik> try setting your dns server to be googles dns server: 8.8.8.8
[0:34] <Q48VW> from my router?
[0:34] <dagerik> Q48VW: no, the pi
[0:34] <ShorTie> try 'apt-cache search dig'
[0:34] * xCP23x (~xCP23x@78-105-36-237.zone3.bethere.co.uk) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:35] <Q48VW> ShorTie, "E: Unable to locate package dig"
[0:35] * spvensko (~spvensko@unaffiliated/spvensko) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:36] <Q48VW> oh my christ I just cache searched for "dig" and it spewed a shittonne of packages
[0:36] <ShorTie> yup
[0:36] <shiftplusone> Yeah, it will do that. (Mind the language though)
[0:36] <pksato> Q48VW: set default gateway? (route -n | grep 0.0.0.0
[0:37] <plugwash> The package you are looking for is dnsutils
[0:37] <dagerik> Q48VW: read this: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/how-to-find-out-what-my-dns-servers-address-is/
[0:37] <pksato> route -n | grep ^0.0.0.0
[0:37] * DocHolliday (~DocHollid@99-99-29-57.lightspeed.iplsin.sbcglobal.net) Quit (Quit: DocHolliday)

[0:38] * simonjackson (~simonwjac@128-79-207-130.hfc.dyn.abo.bbox.fr) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:38] <pksato> ah... dns no set or wrong, Q48VW nano -w /etc/resolv.conf
[0:39] <pksato> and, insert this line nameserver 8.8.8.8
[0:39] <Q48VW> also, my SSH over wifi is hideously slow at times
[0:39] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable237.145-19-135.mc.videotron.ca) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:40] <dagerik> Q48VW: are you talking about a file transfer using scp? ssh being slow doesnt make sense
[0:40] <dagerik> thats like saying http is slow
[0:40] * gyeben (5402f91d@gateway/web/freenode/ip.84.2.249.29) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[0:41] <Q48VW> dagerik, as in, there is a significant delay from when I punch in commands through putty and actually get a response
[0:42] <johnc-> hmm, running startx started the lightdm taskbar
[0:43] <shiftplusone> johnc-, missing ~/.xinitrc ?
[0:43] <dagerik> Q48VW: oh okay
[0:43] <johnc-> shiftplusone: possibly, it's refusing to run as pi so I ran as root to test
[0:43] <dagerik> Q48VW: if you type the character 'a', how many seconds does it take before it appears at your prompt?
[0:43] <shiftplusone> johnc-, what does it say when it refuses to run?
[0:44] <johnc-> xinit: connection to X server lost
[0:44] <johnc-> waiting for X server to shut down Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.
[0:44] <johnc-> no errors
[0:44] <johnc-> just closes
[0:44] <shiftplusone> what do you have in /home/pi/.xinitrc ?
[0:44] * plugwash (~plugwash@94.12.118.56) has left #raspberrypi
[0:44] <johnc-> nothing
[0:45] <shiftplusone> well there's your problem.
[0:45] <johnc-> ahh
[0:45] <shiftplusone> put "exec openbox-session" in there and try again
[0:45] <johnc-> I need to run the wm in there?
[0:45] <shiftplusone> (if you're using openbox)
[0:45] <raidensnake> how do you fix a library link
[0:45] <raidensnake> ftgl isn't registering
[0:45] <shiftplusone> johnc-, it's a list of commands that will be executed when X starts.
[0:46] <johnc-> alrighty
[0:46] <dagerik> raidensnake: shared library paths are set when linking after compilation
[0:46] <Q48VW> dagerik, cat /etc/resolv.conf
[0:46] <Q48VW> domain mshome.net
[0:46] <Q48VW> search mshome.net
[0:46] <Q48VW> nameserver 192.168.137.1
[0:46] * ant_thomas (~ant_thoma@94.14.13.160) Quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
[0:46] <dagerik> Q48VW: try 8.8.8.8 instead
[0:47] <Q48VW> for which item?
[0:47] <dagerik> nameserver
[0:47] <maxinux> google dns is bad mm-kay
[0:47] <maxinux> use your isp's dns server.
[0:47] <rikkib> ldconfig --help
[0:47] <rikkib> Usage: ldconfig [OPTION...]
[0:47] <rikkib> Configure Dynamic Linker Run Time Bindings.
[0:47] <Q48VW> I'm pretty sure that mshome.net shit comes from when I internet-shared my pc with my pi over ethernet
[0:47] <dagerik> that ip is the router and is a dns server. but it's not doing it's job
[0:47] <pksato> most isp dns are bad too.
[0:48] * ChanServ sets mode +o shiftplusone
[0:48] * Q48VW was kicked from #raspberrypi by shiftplusone
[0:48] * ChanServ sets mode -o shiftplusone
[0:48] <johnc-> shiftplusone: thanks a lot, got it running =) now to auto start it :)
[0:49] * Q48VW (~Jacob@adsl-71-158-174-173.dsl.rcsntx.sbcglobal.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:49] <Q48VW> whoops
[0:49] <johnc-> shiftplusone: can I just put the exec line for my GTK app in .xinitrc?
[0:49] <shiftplusone> johnc-, if you won't need a wm, sure.
[0:50] <pksato> most applications not work proper without a window manager.
[0:50] <shiftplusone> otherwise put the program name followed by a & in the first line
[0:50] * \\Mr_C\\ (mrc@adsl-98-89-21-174.mgm.bellsouth.net) Quit ()
[0:50] <shiftplusone> and the exec line as before at the end
[0:50] * kcj (~casey@unaffiliated/kcj) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:51] * suehle (~rsuehle@fedora/suehle) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[0:51] <johnc-> so: unclutter & \n gtk-app-start & \n exec openbox-session ?
[0:51] <pksato> johnc-: just put, exec you_gtk_app
[0:51] <Q48VW> dagerik, rebooted. fixed it. ping google.com returns results.
[0:52] <pksato> dont put & on end.
[0:52] <dagerik> Q48VW: did you change to google's dns server?
[0:52] <shiftplusone> I am not sure that will work
[0:52] <Q48VW> dagerik, yeah: 8.8.8.8
[0:52] <dagerik> Q48VW: good stuff man. keep it real brotha peace out
[0:53] <Q48VW> dagerik, dude thanks for the help. sorry about my mouth, I'll go eat soap
[0:53] <shiftplusone> >_<
[0:54] <shiftplusone> johnc-, yeah, the line you gave should work.
[0:55] * simonjackson (~simonwjac@128-79-207-130.hfc.dyn.abo.bbox.fr) Quit (Quit: WeeChat 0.4.1)
[0:55] <shiftplusone> johnc-, what's this for anyway? some kiosk sort of deal?
[0:55] <Q48VW> shiftplusone, what kind of things is he doing
[0:55] * mu (~mu@unaffiliated/mu) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:56] <johnc-> shiftplusone: think xbmc or similar but with connections to your home appliances, your phone, your computers etc.
[0:56] <shiftplusone> Q48VW, nothing too fancy, just starting a gtk program when X starts, rather than a whole DE.
[0:56] * GuidovanPossum (~GuidovanP@wsip-98-191-184-180.ph.ph.cox.net) has left #raspberrypi
[0:56] * hyperair (~hyperair@ubuntu/member/hyperair) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[0:57] <shiftplusone> hm
[0:57] <Q48VW> how hard could that be'
[0:57] <shiftplusone> as hard as modifying a few lines in 2 files =D
[0:58] <Q48VW> then what is the problem?
[0:58] <dagerik> for a linux beginner it could take years
[0:58] <shiftplusone> Who said there was a problem? D=
[0:58] <johnc-> who said there was a problem?
[0:58] <shiftplusone> heh
[0:58] <Q48VW> pffft
[0:59] <johnc-> shiftplusone: why should the openbox-session be at the bottom of the xinitrc file?
[1:00] <shiftplusone> johnc-, think of xinitrc as a normal shell script that exits when everything in it is done running. When openbox-session is closed, X will exit.
[1:00] <Q48VW> hey dagerik, one more question. I'm trying to do this: http://www.emmaanuel.com/SqueezeBerry-a-Music-Player-based
[1:00] <Q48VW> and I'm stuck on this step: squeezelite-armv6 -l
[1:02] * azeam is now known as azeam_afk
[1:02] <dagerik> for executing programs not in ur PATH you need to prepend ./ in front of the program
[1:02] <shiftplusone> johnc-, so if you put it at the start, the rest of the list won't execute until openbox-session closes. You can put openbox-session& at the start and exec gtk-app and the end, and that will work too.
[1:04] * johnc- (~johnc-@173-22-40-201.client.mchsi.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)
[1:04] <shiftplusone> Q48VW, (./squeezelite-armv6 -l , not squeezelite-armv6 -l)
[1:04] <Q48VW> I got it
[1:04] <Q48VW> thanks
[1:04] <shiftplusone> ah
[1:06] <raidensnake> hey shift
[1:06] <dagerik> Q48VW: it's a security feature so that when root browses your home folder and executes ls, it wont execute your malware also called ls
[1:06] * mgottschlag (~quassel@reactos/tester/phoenix64) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:07] <shiftplusone> raidensnake, hey
[1:07] <shiftplusone> .... is this still about ftgl? >.>
[1:07] <raidensnake> do you know how to force a library to register?
[1:07] <Q48VW> dagerik, that makes sense.
[1:07] <raidensnake> yeah
[1:07] <raidensnake> it's supposed to work under -lftgl but it says not found
[1:07] <raidensnake> but the actual library exists
[1:08] <shiftplusone> raidensnake, did you run ldconfig?
[1:08] <raidensnake> yes but it didn't make a difference
[1:08] <raidensnake> same problem
[1:08] <shiftplusone> did you run it with -v to make sure it finds it
[1:08] <raidensnake> yes
[1:08] * datagutt (~datagutt@unaffiliated/datagutt) Quit (Quit: Computer has gone to sleep.)
[1:08] <shiftplusone> does it?
[1:08] <Q48VW> does this place accept donations?
[1:09] * mgottschlag (~quassel@reactos/tester/phoenix64) Quit (Read error: Operation timed out)
[1:09] <shiftplusone> Q48VW, nope
[1:09] <Q48VW> why
[1:09] <dagerik> Q48VW: yes it does ill PM you the correct bank account number
[1:09] <Q48VW> uh
[1:10] <shiftplusone> Q48VW, why would we? If you want to give an individual like dagerik money, by all means, that's your business. However, the ops don't take money, no.
[1:11] <Q48VW> idk, there should be a centralized distribution of donations though, so I can buy you guys 1/12th of a beer.
[1:11] <raidensnake> best option buy something on the official site
[1:11] <shiftplusone> It doesn't cost us anything to run it, so it would make more sense to donate to freenode or the raspberry pi foundation.
[1:12] * m8 (~mor@unaffiliated/m8) Quit (Quit: Sto andando via)
[1:12] * spvensko (~spvensko@unaffiliated/spvensko) Quit (Quit: spvensko)
[1:13] <Q48VW> shiftplusone, but if you're donating your time to helping people, I'd like to donate my money to you
[1:13] <raidensnake> it says /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lftgl
[1:13] <shiftplusone> Q48VW, that's not the spirit of IRC >_<
[1:13] <Q48VW> alright mr dark knight
[1:14] <Q48VW> you're not the op we deserve, you're the op we need
[1:14] * shiftplusone facepalms
[1:14] <Q48VW> I am your sandwich
[1:14] <dagerik> someone put a leash on that filthy mouth of his
[1:15] <shiftplusone> raidensnake, can you pastebin the output of ldconfig -v ?
[1:15] <raidensnake> it sees it
[1:15] <raidensnake> but there's too many entries to copy
[1:15] <dagerik> raidensnake: use wgetpaste
[1:15] <shiftplusone> I just want to see how it sees it is it libftgl.so or what?
[1:15] <dagerik> raidensnake: you can just do ldconfig -v | wgetpaste and it's paste all content and make a url
[1:15] <raidensnake> libftgl.so.2 -> libftgl.so.2.1.3
[1:15] <raidensnake> is what it shows
[1:16] * sco` (~ross@unaffiliated/sco/x-3425046) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[1:16] <shiftplusone> is it a dynamic or a static link you're making?
[1:16] <raidensnake> I wish i knew
[1:16] <raidensnake> i just got it from getting apt-get
[1:17] * Omnibrain (~Omnibrain@unaffiliated/omnibrain) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[1:17] <shiftplusone> can I see the whole gcc line?
[1:17] <Q48VW> dagerik, do you have some kind of beef with me?
[1:17] <raidensnake> apt-get install libftgl2
[1:17] <raidensnake> is what I used to download it
[1:17] * platoscave (~platoscav@adsl-99-111-12-51.dsl.lsan03.sbcglobal.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:18] <shiftplusone> yeah, that's fine, I don't think there is a problem with libftgl
[1:19] <dagerik> Q48VW: no
[1:19] <Q48VW> dagerik, squeezelite just sits there after I try to run it
[1:19] <raidensnake> usually it sees it
[1:19] <raidensnake> but it seems like it's under a different name
[1:20] <raidensnake> how do you look up the -l name?
[1:20] <dagerik> Q48VW: this program is unbeknowest to me. sounds like it's running foreveralone in a loop
[1:21] <juliend> shiftplusone: i retry to install/compil gitit on raspberry, and yes, it fail because ther is not enougth ram... maybe a can extend swap size ?
[1:21] <raidensnake> oh hold on

[4:33] <[Saint]> That, and, building a system that will actually hold stable at this clock range.
[4:34] <[Saint]> People more insane that I have ventured into much higher clocks with active cooling.
[4:34] <Coburn> [Saint]:
[4:34] <Coburn> So the maximum recommended speed is?
[4:35] <[Saint]> maximum recommended == 1GHz.
[4:36] <[Saint]> One of the major issues is the production variation. Some units seem to *really* dislike <1GHz.
[4:37] <Coburn> Well, mine are made from the UK.
[4:37] <Coburn> My 256MB one was made in china though
[4:37] <[Saint]> Where its made is meaningless.
[4:37] <[Saint]> ...and, slightly racist to suggest otherwise. :)
[4:38] <Coburn> heh
[4:38] <Coburn> Well, I can say, 900Mhz is stable for me.
[4:38] <Coburn> Haven't adventured running at 1Ghz all the time
[4:39] <[Saint]> With pretty much every CPU, you'll find that occasionally there are outliers capable of performing well outside their recommended range. Occasionally you'll find ones that don't perform up to their recommended range, but these are usually weeded out during production tests.
[4:40] <[Saint]> There's a lot of variation in bulk manufacture.
[4:40] <[Saint]> It can be pure luck.
[4:40] <Coburn> Hm, ok.
[4:41] <[Saint]> In my personal experience, ~1.2GHz is fine, but I have found others that claim that even 900MHz makes their device completely unstable.
[4:42] <[Saint]> (when I say "fine" I mean, no special effort taken to ensure functionality)
[4:43] <[Saint]> Some people have also said that fast sd cards (Class 10) behave very poorly with high clock speeds, but this isn't a problem I have faced either.
[4:45] <[Saint]> Trial and error, basically.
[4:46] <[Saint]> Find out what works for your use case, and your device(s) via trial and error. Backup your sdcard, then start playing.
[4:46] <[Saint]> The absolute worst that is going to happen unless you turn off thermal protection is the pi will throttle itself, and then shut down.

[6:59] <shiftplusone> *use
[7:00] <g2nightmare> well i have ssh set up
[7:00] <g2nightmare> i can view my files via winscp or putty
[7:00] <shiftplusone> yup, it's a cpu intensive option though
[7:00] <g2nightmare> so what do you recommend?>
[7:00] <shiftplusone> do you need to access the files from windows?
[7:01] <shiftplusone> well, you said putty, so maybe that was a stupid question. I think that makes samba the best option
[7:01] <g2nightmare> i guess

[7:03] <g2nightmare> first of all, i want to mount my hdd whenever my pi boots up
[7:03] <g2nightmare> i tried adding a line to fstab
[7:03] <g2nightmare> but then my pi doesn't allow me to ssh into it
[7:03] <g2nightmare> whenever i reboot, that is
[7:03] <g2nightmare> and my hard drive clicks. so i'm assuming something is going wrong.
[7:03] <shiftplusone> That doesn't make much sense =/
[7:03] <g2nightmare> yeah.
[7:04] <g2nightmare> normally i mount the drive like:
[7:04] <g2nightmare> sudo mount -o rw /dev/sda1 /media/hdd
[7:04] <g2nightmare> no problems
[7:04] <g2nightmare> so i add the line:
[7:04] <shiftplusone> are you using a powered hub (or does the hard drive have an external power supply)?
[7:04] <g2nightmare> /dev/sda1 /media/hdd auto defaults 0 0
[7:04] <g2nightmare> yeah.
[7:05] <g2nightmare> im using a powered hub, essentially
[7:05] <shiftplusone> it really should not affect ssh in any way. What happens exactly? sshd fails to start? the network doesn't come up... what?
[7:05] <g2nightmare> well when i reboot the pi
[7:05] <g2nightmare> my website becomes visible
[7:05] <g2nightmare> but then i can't access my pi
[7:05] <g2nightmare> that's about it.
[7:06] <g2nightmare> how can i further diagnose it?
[7:06] <shiftplusone> what do you mean by can't access... what's the error?
[7:06] <g2nightmare> winscp or putty can't find my pi
[7:06] <g2nightmare> no real error
[7:06] <g2nightmare> its probably trying to find my hdd in a repetitive loop and never does.

[7:07] <g2nightmare> maybe i'm mounting wrong in fstab
[7:07] <g2nightmare> i'm hitting tab

[7:08] <shiftplusone> nope.... as long as they are whitespaces
[7:08] <g2nightmare> hmm

[9:10] <durango> na85 well its a barcode scanner actually
[9:10] <durango> that writes to stdin in ASCII
[9:10] <na85> well can't you just pipe it to a text file?
[9:11] <durango> i have no control over the scanner itself
[9:11] <durango> is there a way to always set usb devices to pipe to a file?
[9:11] <na85> ... well if it writes to stdin
[9:11] <durango> or to a specific stdin file?
[9:12] <na85> i guess i just don't understand the question
[9:12] <durango> theres no "enter" key unfortunately either but it does ammend a '#' at the end
[9:12] <durango> which "acts" like an enter key (in our program)
[9:12] <na85> if you already have a process giving you stuff as stdout
[9:12] <na85> then you can just use the > operator to write it to a file

[13:28] <atmosx> I have an SD card with raspbian, which I want to clone, to multiple SD cards. What's the best way to go? dd?
[13:28] <Encrypt> atmosx, Yes, sure ;)

[13:30] <Encrypt> By the way all, the PiHolder case if great :)
[13:31] <Encrypt> Now the temperature is 40.1°C instead of 53°C
[13:31] <Encrypt> Almost 13°C less
[13:32] <Encrypt> And I can feel the PiHolder Case being quite hot :P
[13:33] <atmosx> Encrypt: yes but it's very expensive
[13:33] <Encrypt> Ya
[13:33] <Encrypt> But it's a very nice case :p
[13:33] <Encrypt> And it works well :p
[13:34] <atmosx> I'm looking for a solution to put engravings on a case but I my produce my own cases

[13:34] <atmosx> Encrypt: oh I see.
[13:34] <atmosx> Encrypt: what are you running on it anyway?
[13:34] <Encrypt> So it's quite appropriate to use it :)

[13:36] <Encrypt> atmosx, Ethernet, sure
[13:36] <Encrypt> I have a 1 Mbps upload speed
[13:37] <Encrypt> That's quite enough for my use
[13:37] <atmosx> 125 Kbps upstream from the ISP?
[13:37] <Encrypt> 1000 kbps then
[13:37] <Encrypt> Ya, upstream
[13:37] <Encrypt> Downstream, it is 10 Mbps
[13:37] <atmosx> yeah sorry it's 125 kb/s and
[13:37] <atmosx> takes 7.1 seconds to load
[13:38] <Encrypt> atmosx, I have to change the quality of the top banner
[13:38] <atmosx> 4.35 with cached content

[13:38] <atmosx> nice
[13:38] <atmosx> what CMS is that?

[13:39] <atmosx> I see

[14:29] <CeilingKitten> you know how it pulls a thumbnail screenshot locally, it might try to do that for the remote ftp system's files =|

[18:49] <linuxstb> But first you should use fdisk to change the size of the SD card's second partition to be the same as the size of your USB stick's partition.
