[0:22] <linuxstb> Phosie: So what have you tried? Does dmesg show the webcam being detected? Do you see a /dev/video0 device?

[0:27] <Mortvert> voltage drop?
[0:27] <Phosie> It shows my webcam feed, but after a second it shows a grey screen with "unable to detect video device"
[0:27] <chithead> would show up in dmesg
[0:27] <Phosie> powered hub
[0:27] <Phosie> It works okay on raspbian, just having issues with arch
[0:28] <doc-saintly> hehe, I just had a funny thought as a nice add-on for the Pi, a little adapter for the power plug that accepts micro USB, and it has a little battery inside to act as a UPS for the device, could auto-recharge through USB
[0:29] <doc-saintly> something like a rechargeable AA would probably be plenty
[0:29] <Phosie> I'll see if it plays nicely with cheese
[0:29] * Thra11 (~Thra11@87.112.165.251) Quit (Read error: Operation timed out)
[0:31] * Romeo- (~romi@unaffiliated/romeo/x-000000001) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[0:32] <ring0> Phosie, actually have you tried #archlinux-arm?
[0:33] <Phosie> Not yet ring0
[0:33] <Phosie> I still think my webcam is partially to blame.
[0:34] <ring0> i just thought, since you mentioned raspbian works and arch doesn't, it might be a distribution specific problem
[0:35] <Phosie> I'll try there tomorrow, this is getting me stressed, thanks for the suggestion.
[0:36] <Phosie> I'm shopping tomorrow so if I see a cheap webcam I'll try that first.
[0:36] <doc-saintly> Phosie: why are you playing with arch if the other one works?
[0:36] <Phosie> doc-saintly: because I like the fast boot up time, and that there is less software pre installed.
[0:37] <doc-saintly> I see, so sort of migrating your pi over?
[0:37] * Midnigh2ker (~Toker@unaffiliated/midnightoker) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:37] <Phosie> pretty much. I used raspbian for a year.
[0:37] <doc-saintly> what does your pi do?
[0:38] <Phosie> It depends on my mood, usually python and using the GPIO
[0:38] * olefowdie (~Ford@c-76-122-117-251.hsd1.ga.comcast.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 276 seconds)

[1:06] <Phosie> Not a clue i'm afriad
[1:06] <New-Student-42> :'(
[1:07] <PhotoJim> you can host your own DNS as long as you have a static IP.
[1:07] <PhotoJim> cost: free, plus whatever you spend to resurrect an old machine to run Linux on. the Pi could even do it.
[1:09] <New-Student-42> you make my day :D
[1:09] <davor> the sauce is gone
[1:09] <doc-saintly> PhotoJim: you mean a name like the dyndns things do?
[1:10] <PhotoJim> no, dyndns is for people who have IPs that change. if you have a static IP that never changes, you can usually run Internet services on it the way any person with a server would.
[1:10] * plugwash (~plugwash@94.6.24.111) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[1:10] <davor> you can run most stuff with dyndns too
[1:10] * GuySoft (guy@109.226.48.206) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[1:11] <PhotoJim> davor: yeah, seems to me I knew that.
[1:11] <doc-saintly> PhotoJim: er, I guess I meant - the whole domain name part of it.
[1:11] <PhotoJim> I bought a domain name, pointed its DNS record to my server, and awya I meant.
[1:11] <PhotoJim> oh, domain name, you just find a registrar.
[1:11] <New-Student-42> on the tutorial i reading they talk about " bind9-host "
[1:11] <PhotoJim> I use 10dollar.ca, but there are hundreds around the world.
[1:11] <doc-saintly> ah, for some reason I interpreted what you said as acting as your own registrat
[1:11] <doc-saintly> registrar*
[1:12] <PhotoJim> oh, no, just my own DNS services.
[1:12] <PhotoJim> if you dig records for my domain, they come from my machine(s).
[1:12] <doc-saintly> I see. Hrm, I wonder what's involved in becoming a registrar O.o
[1:12] <PhotoJim> that, I don't know.
[1:12] <PhotoJim> time for me to run so I leave that to you :)
[1:12] <PhotoJim> bbl
[1:13] * zleap (~psutton@dsl-217-155-46-222.zen.co.uk) has joined #raspberrypi

[1:14] <New-Student-42> ok, so i need a domain for create my own mail serveur
[1:14] <doc-saintly> New-Student-42: I use namecheap, but as PhotoJim mentioned, there are plenty of options out there
[1:15] * zleap (~psutton@dsl-217-155-46-222.zen.co.uk) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[1:16] <New-Student-42> doc-saintly : ok, i will search this
[1:17] * datagutt (~datagutt@unaffiliated/datagutt) Quit (Quit: Computer has gone to sleep.)
[1:17] <doc-saintly> New-Student-42: or there's the dynamic DNS option, if you're running something like a RPi that would probably work just as well
[1:17] <New-Student-42> doc : i'm a bit lost, what is a DNS ?
[1:18] * Wesp (~user@dsl-202-173-146-232.qld.westnet.com.au) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:18] <doc-saintly> New-Student-42: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Name_System
[1:19] <New-Student-42> doc : it is not something like " @gmail " ?
[1:19] * debenham (~cjd@122.150.27.23) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[1:19] <doc-saintly> normally, DNS requires a static IP, but there are third party services like DynDns
[1:19] <doc-saintly> New-Student-42: yes
[1:20] <doc-saintly> the dynamic DNS option allows you to run a client somewhere that will keep the dynamic IP updated in the domain record, and it's usually a free domain like MyName.mine.nu
[1:20] * SpeedEvil (~quassel@tor/regular/SpeedEvil) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[1:20] <New-Student-42> doc : ok, so a dynamic dns is free and the static one isn't ?
[1:22] <doc-saintly> New-Student-42: depends. most ISPs these days only give out dynamic ones as far as I know.
[1:22] <doc-saintly> they're psuedo dynamic though, since they stay the same as long as you're connected etc.
[1:23] <l_r> what is the cheapest hdmi monitor for the rpi?
[1:23] <doc-saintly> l_r: is there a reason you're excluding DVI monitors with a $2 adapter for HDMI?
[1:24] * heathkid (~heathkid@unaffiliated/heathkid) Quit (Disconnected by services)
[1:24] * heathkid|2 (~heathkid@unaffiliated/heathkid) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:24] <l_r> doc-saintly, no, how much are they compared to hdmis?
[1:24] <New-Student-42> doc : ok, so with cheapname (or other) i buy a domain name static, who will be unique, right ?
[1:24] <doc-saintly> l_r: I don't know, but I think monitors more commonly have DVI
[1:24] * oldtopman (~oldtopman@unaffiliated/oldtopman) Quit (Quit: *pouf*)
[1:25] <doc-saintly> New-Student-42: the domain is always static, where it points to is what needs to be static if you want to run your own
[1:25] <New-Student-42> l-r : they have
[1:25] <doc-saintly> New-Student-42: you're wanting to set up your own mail server?
[1:25] <Firehopper> l_r, I paid $40 for a hdmi <> lvds adaptor for a laptop lcd I had lyin around :)
[1:26] <New-Student-42> doc : yes i want
[1:26] <l_r> unfortunately my laptop does not have any input
[1:26] * dj_pi (~dj@c-107-5-25-243.hsd1.mi.comcast.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)

[1:31] <Firehopper> not much for right now.
[1:32] <Firehopper> I've been working on making a python program with it, but it was a pain, so I installed a VM on the desktop and doing it on the desktop now.. using wheezy
[1:32] <l_r> using wheezy for the rpi?

[3:04] * LaxWasHere is now known as LaxWasThere
[3:04] <plugwash> the serial connection to the Pi MUST be 3.3V, 5V will probablly cause damage, RS232 levels will definately cause damage

[3:06] <funkster> usb
[3:07] <plugwash> you can get USB to 3.3V serial cables suitable for connecting to the Pi. For example http://www.adafruit.com/products/954
[3:08] <pksato> use a usb to rs232 uart with 5v ttl level, and voltage divider.

[4:38] <gates> hello
[4:38] <nerdboy> a little discussion in a meeting i wasn't invited to and bam! up pops a new library i get to build and package...
[4:38] <CeilingKitten> Anyone with networking knowledge here at the moment?
[4:38] <KiltedPi> I've some.
[4:38] <KiltedPi> sup

[4:38] <nerdboy> what's your question?
[4:39] <prpplague> hehe
[4:39] <gates> Does anyone know of any alway listening voice command library?
[4:39] <nerdboy> not off the top of my head...
[4:39] <gates> i wanna hook up my lights to one
[4:40] <nerdboy> CeilingKitten: you're up
[4:40] <CeilingKitten> Im using dnsmasq to redirect ips, deciding between 127.0.0.1 and 0.0.0.0 ? whats faster... 0.0.0.0 would hang and wait for timeouts on client end? and 127.0.0.1 would use cpu and prolly hang? should i host a small 1x1.gif on 127.0.0.1 or would that be using more resources than needed?
[4:40] <CeilingKitten> gates there is a rapi voice command software, not sure it meets your criteria of library
[4:41] * ring0 (ring0@unaffiliated/ring0) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[4:41] <KiltedPi> they are both loopbacks
[4:41] * KiltedPi shrugs
[4:41] <KiltedPi> you mean computationally faster? Why would it matter?
[4:41] <CeilingKitten> gates, http://stevenhickson.blogspot.ca/2013/06/voice-command-v30-for-raspberry-pi.html
[4:42] <CeilingKitten> I want to know what would be less grief for the pi =) ?
[4:42] <CeilingKitten> if they are both loopbacks i guess it dont matter?
[4:42] <KiltedPi> I figure there'd be no grief
[4:42] <CeilingKitten> i just saw some block lists written one way, and others written the other
[4:42] <gates> ill cehck it out
[4:43] <gates> its just a matter of alway listening for a voice command and then running a python command
[4:43] <funkster> in theory if i have a specific x86 debian wheezy install i should be able to mimic the install on RPi wheezy. yes? in general would i run into any known issues of not being able to do certain things?
[4:43] * plugwash (~plugwash@94.6.24.111) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[4:43] <KiltedPi> Yeah, as far as cpu, shouldn't matter
[4:43] <KiltedPi> :)

[4:44] <nerdboy> funkster: in theory, no
[4:44] <KiltedPi> I've no idea what the differences are between Debian Wheezy and Raspbian, but there are apparently very few
[4:44] <nerdboy> wheezy is wheezy from a package install/dependency standpoint
[4:44] * olefowdie (~Ford@c-76-122-117-251.hsd1.ga.comcast.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)

[4:45] <funkster> nerdboy: so what should i look out for that possibly wont work? i have it setup to print via cups with drivers that are from the apt repo.
[4:45] <nerdboy> which ia really not much beyond firmware/bootloader/kernel
[4:45] <nerdboy> anything cups-related should be ok
[4:46] <nerdboy> installing the same package, appropriately built for the target arch, should be the same on either
[4:47] <funkster> gotcha. so hopefully i have no problems =D

[4:53] <funkster> nerdboy: raspbian, not sure. but i have debian wheezy and its in the apt repos

[5:00] <funkster> ohh gotcha - yeah thats needed lol.
[5:00] <nerdboy> you want the sane version
[5:01] <nerdboy> i did toss one of my cards at work the other day
[5:01] <funkster> what did you use it in?
[5:02] <nerdboy> i've been cycling through the same cards for at least a year

[13:45] <tadasZ> hello everyone! Guys, I'm having problems formatting my SD card which was used with my RaspberryPi, in Disk Utility I can't do erase nor partition, I downloaded SDFormatter from sdcard.org but it says my SD card is write protected, but it 100% not write protected, and this is happening with two different SD cards which were used in RaspberryPi, maybe someone knows what could be the problem ?
[13:45] <gbaman> is the lock on the side of the SD card on?
[13:46] <gbaman> normally a little switch
[13:48] <ShorTie> writing a new image to the card is normally enough of a format, or do you want to use these cards some where else ??
[13:49] <tadasZ> the switch is not in lock position 100%
[13:49] <tadasZ> i tried locking and unlocking several times

[15:19] <pierrrrr> linuxstb: interestingly, it breaks the same way my python+ctypes malfunctioned (no image, no eos buffer flag event)
[15:20] <pierrrrr> *no image rendered, no OMX_EventBufferFlag
[15:20] <Coffe> and1 if you are using rasbmc and a newer tv you could controll it with the tv remote ..
[15:20] <And1> Coffe: In this case not. But thanks.
[15:21] <Coffe> ahh no cec support in the tv .. happend to me 2 :/
[15:21] <CeilingKitten> And1, you can use hdmi tv remote out of the box as Coffe suggests, or you can buy an IR diode for about a dollar, or a usb ir dongle they can be pricey though if you dont shop around
[15:23] <CeilingKitten> the diode would involve gpio fiddling save some time, and a usb port. You should check out the raspbmc and xmbc forums you should be able to download a premade config for your remtoe to save you the grief of configuring it
[15:23] <And1> CeilingKitten: I'd need a supported 2,4GHz RF usb dongle, not IR.

[17:33] <CeilingKitten> Genius required: So I have a text file with many many lines, each line different, I want to add/append a word to eachline? How would one do this, its not a simple find/replace with sed because each line is different??
[17:34] <CeilingKitten> end result being Line1+word, Line2+word, etc,...
[17:35] <CeilingKitten> Any suggestions would be appreciated, it's a huge file lol
[17:37] <Phosie> I wish I could help
[17:37] <gordonDrogon> sed < file > file.new -e 's/$/+word/
[17:38] <gordonDrogon> $ is the end of line hook.

[19:58] <mgottschlag> waterbury: what does that board do? looks more complicated to me than "just a gpio extender" :)
[19:58] <nid0> its just a thing to be a bit careful of, as the gpio inputs arent regulated
[19:58] <waterbury> it reads SNES carts
[19:58] <gordonDrogon> you just need to feed in a regulated 5v line into the Pi via GPIO.
[19:59] <gordonDrogon> There is no protection though - might be advisable to fuse it if you feel the need
[19:59] <waterbury> I used a 1.5A picofuse
[19:59] <waterbury> I am running quite a bit though
[19:59] <gordonDrogon> waterbury, big board :) So what's on the other side then?

[20:00] <mgottschlag> hm, my last short used about 1a :|

[20:00] <waterbury> http://cdn.familab.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/110112230456.jpg
[20:00] <gordonDrogon> neat.
[20:00] <mgottschlag> +1
[20:00] <johnc-> cool
[20:01] <gordonDrogon> that's an ATmega on it too?
[20:02] <waterbury> for power
[20:02] <waterbury> I have it control a MOSFET
[20:02] <mgottschlag> waterbury: btw, I see the way you added that connector to the underside of the board - these pin headers can be soldered top-down (with the pins towards the board) on the copper side, then the black part can be pushed down towards the board
[20:02] <waterbury> that switches power to the pi
[20:02] <mgottschlag> that works well without some extra pcb, although it requires some force
[20:02] <mgottschlag> and it is surprisingly stable
[20:03] <waterbury> the reason I did that is so I could have an IO expander on the bottom ot the SNES

[20:07] <waterbury> also higher voltage range

[20:08] <waterbury> the price goes up 200% for 2A, but the 1.5As could be had for less than $5
[20:08] <waterbury> not bad

[21:17] <gordonDrogon> I get free delivery from Farnell.
[21:18] <rdz> hi all. is the power from the micro usb plug directly connected to the power from the usb A sockets or is there some voltage regulator inbetween ?
[21:18] <plugwash> gordonDrogon, same, I wouldn't use mouser all the time because of the steep delivery charge on orders under £50 (orders over £50 get free delivery) but if you have a big order or need something that farnell don't sell it's worth checking mouser out
[21:19] <rdz> i'd like to connect a usb powered harddisk and wonder whether its worth to buy a more powerful usb power supply to make that possible
[21:19] <gordonDrogon> rdz there is a 700mA polyfuse in-between.
[21:19] <rdz> oh i see ...

[21:20] <gordonDrogon> plugwash, waterbury ok - I'll give mouser a look next time I'm going a big shop :)
[21:20] <gordonDrogon> rdz, really recommended to use a powered hub, or separate PSU for a hard drive.
[21:20] <rdz> how quick is it recating? i experienced input/output errors with the current setup using an 1A power supply.. so i think having a stronger supply wouldn't necessarily help?
[21:20] <rdz> *reacting
[21:21] <gordonDrogon> they react pretty quick - milliseconds.
[21:21] <gordonDrogon> they can take from seconds to minutes to recover
[21:21] <rdz> gordonDrogon, that is what i do now, but i have to use two separate psu for this minimalistic setup... it's not elegeant, but probably i just have to live with it
[21:22] <IT_Sean> You will need a powered USB hub for a bus powered HDD
[21:22] <gordonDrogon> rdz do you have a Rev 2 Pi? If so, you can power the whole Pi via the big USB ports...

[21:22] <gordonDrogon> some (most) usb hubs leak power back up the link cable.
[21:22] <rdz> i don't know.. it's pretty now.. bought it last week
[21:22] <rdz> s/now/new
[21:22] <gordonDrogon> it'sll be a rev 2, so it'll power up via the big USB ports.

[21:23] <gordonDrogon> not recomended as theres no fuse on it, but it should work.
[21:23] <rdz> you mean with a powered hub i need only one psu?
[21:23] <gordonDrogon> very likely.
[21:23] <rdz> gotcha.. thanks
[21:23] <gordonDrogon> you might be unlucky and get a hub that doesn't power the host though!
[21:24] <rdz> interestingly the drive didn't turn off, but the performance was very shaky when using a cheap usb-sata adapter
[21:25] <rdz> with the powered one it's much more stable.. but since the polyfuse wasn't triggered, the power might not be the problem...

[21:25] <gordonDrogon> power (to the Pi) is one of the biggest issues we see,
[21:28] <rdz> if the trick with powered uplink doesn't work, couldn't i just connect the pi with a usb a -> micro usb cable and power it as a client
[21:28] <gordonDrogon> off the hub? yes.
[21:28] <rdz> i mean, is it a problem if the pi is host and (power) client at the same time?
[21:28] <gordonDrogon> that's how I originally powered my first Pi.
[21:28] <gordonDrogon> the rev 1 Pi's had polyfuses on the USB sockets too.
[21:29] <gordonDrogon> so back powering then didn't work as they were 140mA trips.
