[3:07] <jdriver> hey there, I'm unable to connect to my rpi with a console cable. It's a new rip and I don't have a monitor cable to use. I suspect the sdcard. I'm on my third format and rewrite of it. When I apply power to the rpi with the sdcard in, I get the green activity light, off and on for a minute. I'm wondering, does that mean that it's running off the sdcard and in fact the card may not be the problem?
[3:07] <Ozzzy> if you don't like it... why buy one
[3:08] <Ozzzy> console cable?
[3:08] <pksato> use sata port replicator
[3:08] <jdriver> i'm using the screen command. The first time it runs I get a blank screen with blinking cursor. every subsequent execution of the command gives me the message 'cannot find PTY'

[3:09] <shiftplusone> console cable? kind of a stupid thing to call it O_o
[3:09] <PhotoJim> console cable, if it lets you hook up with a plain serial port to a serial console.
[3:10] <shiftplusone> (not aimed at you jdriver , but at the adafruit folks that wrote the article)
[3:10] <pksato> 1:2 sata http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124049
[3:10] <shiftplusone> jdriver, which distro are you running?
[3:10] <jdriver> no offense taken :)
[3:10] <jdriver> wheezy
[3:10] <shiftplusone> raspbian?
[3:10] * InterWeb (~InterWeb@unaffiliated/wanttolovedjango) has joined #raspberrypi
[3:10] <jdriver> but i'm building linux from scratch on ubuntu, just want to get this thing running. yes raspbian
[3:11] <shiftplusone> and you're setting the right baud rate and talking to the right device?
[3:11] * ukscone (~Adium@cpe-24-193-113-179.nyc.res.rr.com) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[3:11] <jdriver> yes, i'm following the tutorial. i've tried 9600 ( a lower baud rate) as well
[3:11] <pksato> 1:5 with raid http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124043
[3:12] <jdriver> i'm guessing the sdcard is working as i get the green activity light for quite awhile; is this a fair assumption?
[3:12] <shiftplusone> it usually, 'just works', so I am not sure what is wrong.
[3:12] * hyperair (hyperair@ubuntu/member/hyperair) has joined #raspberrypi
[3:12] <shiftplusone> jdriver, yeah, when you have sd card issues you don't get much more than a red light and a very dim green one.
[3:12] <jdriver> i'm going to try a different method to get the raspbian image on the sdcard this time, hopefully it works
[3:13] * Syliss (~Home@dpncorp1.digitalpath.net) Quit (Quit: Syliss)

[3:16] <shiftplusone> (grasping at straws here)
[3:16] <jdriver> no, it's just a usb cable with 4 wires sticking out of one end. plugged into a powered hub which is plugged into the computer

[14:53] <dheeraj> I meant to say that how to install linux in it..??
[14:53] <bluebie> linux must be installed on to an SD card which is inserted in to the raspberry pi
[14:53] <bluebie> you can buy sd cards with linux preinstalled, or you can install it yourself using a computer
[14:53] <bluebie> there are lots of tutorials online for how to do that
[14:53] <bluebie> your computer will need an SD card reader/writer device to do it however
[14:54] <dheeraj> bluebie: Ohkk and after installling it how to use it..?? i will need an interface
[14:55] <dheeraj> Will be back sooon...
[14:55] <bluebie> the raspberry pi has a HDMI plug and a composite plug - you can use either to connect to a monitor or tv, and it has usb ports for keyboard and mouse. Alternatively you can connect it to a network using ethernet port and connect in to it using SSH from another computer
[14:55] <bluebie> SSH only gives you a command line interface though (unless you spend a bunch of time making X11 forwarding work)
[14:56] <rhiakath> @dheeraj. it's a simple computer. you can't just plug a computer into another one. you can connect them thru a network, internet, or whatever...

[21:44] <DouglasK> Xchat seems not bad under raspbian.
[21:44] <tristan_1990> Right, I'm helping with an art installation which requires the raspberry pi to look for twitter posts in realtime for the term "hate art". When a tweet containing that is found I would like it to trigger gpio7 HIGH so that it lights up my lightbulb (already sorted the lightbult bit). I've found an example on the internet, but this only flashes the LED when a tweet is sent to a certain user
[21:44] <tristan_1990> . Is there a way I can modify this code so that it looks for twitter posts containing "hate art" in them.
