[3:01] <Vialas> thanks pksato , i have had a read on it, but have tired a few troubleshooting things
[3:03] <pksato> Vialas: two main causes to RPi dont load OS, Not proper sd card. Inadequate power supply,
[3:03] <Vialas> i have swaped out both SD card and Power Supply
[3:03] <Vialas> both were working fine for 4 months
[3:04] <Vialas> then the pi stoped after i rebooted from installing Cloud9
[3:04] <Vialas> i have since reinstalled on two different SD cards using noobz to cut down on install errors
[3:04] <Vialas> as well as use different power supplies

[9:07] <Vialas> Hello Everyone, im having a weird issue with my raspbery pi
[9:07] <Vialas> i can install the OS using Noobz but, when the pi resets i only get a red LED
[9:07] <Vialas> any thoughts?
[9:08] <atomi> try another SD card
[9:08] <Vialas> i have, same problem
[9:08] <Vialas> very weird problem, the SD card has been fine for the past 4 months

[9:14] <shiftplusone> Vialas, it means the pi cannot load the firmware from the sd card. Lots of reasons this could happen. In your case, it's a little odd though, since we know the card is fine (the pi loaded noobs off it).
[9:15] <Vialas> indeed, thats what i dont get [Saint]
[9:15] <atomi> well yeah it's probably an incomplete install
[9:15] <Vialas> ops, i mean shiftplusone
[9:15] <Vialas> i have atempted to install 3 times
[9:15] * andreiiar (~andrei.ro@unaffiliated/andreiiar) has joined #raspberrypi
[9:15] <Vialas> (i am on my 4th, with a 2nd SD card)
[9:15] <shiftplusone> Incomplete install should at least load the firmware
[9:15] <shiftplusone> Vialas, have you tried not using noobs and using raw images instead?
[9:16] <Vialas> i get to the 4 pix. screen, then Black and just the read screen
[9:16] <Vialas> no i have not
[9:16] * Nefarious___ (~Nefarious@unaffiliated/nefarious---/x-0774223) has joined #raspberrypi
[9:16] <Vialas> that is a good sugestion shiftplusone , i shall try that after this install.
[9:16] <Vialas> shiftplusone what flav. do you recomend, i normaly use raspian so i can use apt-get :P
[9:16] <atomi> yeah
[9:16] <shiftplusone> then stick with raspbian.
[9:17] <Vialas> what do you use shiftplusone ?
[9:17] <shiftplusone> Arch
[9:17] <atomi> by the way that noobs installer sounds like it causes more problems than it fixes
[9:17] <Vialas> oh, i havent tried that one, whats its angle?
[9:17] <shiftplusone> I wouldn't go recommending it to people who are used to debian though.
[9:18] <shiftplusone> Vialas, their aim is simplicity
[9:18] <shiftplusone> https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/The_Arch_Way
[9:19] <Vialas> oh, why would you not recommend to debian users ? i am 1337
[9:20] <shiftplusone> Because it uses systemd and pacman... there's no apt-get. It may take some getting used to.
[9:20] <shiftplusone> And you don't gain much.
[9:20] <Vialas> pacman?
[9:20] <Vialas> like i can play the game ?

[9:43] <Vialas> i like debian. i served my time when i spent 3 days compiling gentoo back in the 90s only to have it not work after the final stage
[9:43] <shiftplusone> arch is kind of like gentoo without all of the compiling
[9:44] <Vialas> ahh right
[9:45] <Vialas> archie looks cool thought

[9:54] <a7x> (i'm on windows, i know it's possible to crosscompile, but i'm not sure i can do that here)
[9:55] <shiftplusone> I think distcc is what you're after, but I am not sure how well it works with non-native systems
[9:55] <shiftplusone> and you would still be cross-compiling

[17:15] <Armand> Sorry. *I'm building..
[17:15] <remib> Encrypt: I thought about it, does it consume as much, or just some residual current ?
[17:16] <wrabbit> use the same solar panel you were already using?
[17:16] <wrabbit> not sure what your point is about polyfuses though

[17:16] <Armand> I thought it best to add fuses to all the USB ports, just in case. ;)
[17:16] <wrabbit> im not saying that they are bad in all cases, but the one in the pi can be a problem that you need to avoid
[17:17] <Armand> Yeah, agreed.
[17:17] <wrabbit> powering a pi with 2 wifi adaptors and a pi camera, you have no choice but to find a way around it
[17:17] <Armand> Thankfully I don't use the Pi's own ports.
[17:17] <Encrypt> remib, Not that much (I can't remember how much it is) but that's still a power loss...
[17:18] <Encrypt> I'd say the question "Do I have to uplug it" depends on the usage you're doing of your RPi...

[17:19] <Encrypt> If you often switch it on and off, then, I'd say "Don't bother"
[17:19] <Armand> I skimmed your comment and saw "polyfuse"
[17:19] <Encrypt> But if you keep it off for a long time, the best thing to do is to completely unplug the Pi
[17:19] <wrabbit> Armand: hah thats ok

[17:21] <wrabbit> does it need to be in python?
[17:21] <Encrypt> tristan_1990, You can take a photograph I imagine thanks to a cron job which would be copied in a sync'ed Dropbox folder...

[19:24] <spm-Draget> Does the mpeg2-lisence only enable decoding of mpeg2 streams? I always thought decoding a certain video format required multiple compute-intensive tasks (like DCT, colorconversion, etc.) and that a GPU handles *those* seteps. And it would not make any difference which format the video is as long as the codec used the GPU functions when available.
[19:24] <spm-Draget> So buying the mpeg2 lisence would not improve anything but decoding mpeg2 steams, or would it help with other things, too?

[19:27] <dheeraj> wrabbit: do i firstly boot raspbian on PI..??
[19:27] <spm-Draget> Yeah, but if I was a developer e.g. of a theora decoder and I need fast inverst DCT or something like this, I would just use those functions… Or they require explicity a mpe2 stream, which is kinda stupid. =(
[19:27] <mgottschlag1> those keys just unlock some software - if you knew how the GPU or its firmware worked, you could probably use the hardware without any key
[19:28] <mgottschlag1> the problem only is that the firmware is locked down
[19:28] <[Saint]> s/probably/certainly/

[19:32] <[Saint]> TLoFP1: in what regard?
[19:32] <linuxstb> spm-Draget: The entire MPEG-2 decoder runs on the GPU, it's not a matter of the GPU "assisting", it does everything - you just feed the GPU the compressed bitstream.
[19:33] <spm-Draget> Stupid =(
[19:34] <[Saint]> hum. I thought the gpu assisted the CPU, or vice versa, as its the larger player.
[19:34] <[Saint]> I stand corrected.
[19:34] <TLoFP1> [Saint]: low latency streamping, GPU accelrated
[19:35] <TLoFP1> [Saint]: I got streaming with mplayer to work, but latency is very high when doing pi to pi
[19:35] <TLoFP1> I suspect it is because the GPU accerlation is not being taken advantage off

[20:03] <wrabbit> or check your wireless router for what ip addresses are being used
[20:03] <wrabbit> and then try to ssh into all of them

[20:04] <dheeraj_> wrabbit: I know you cant, but i am telling this again and again b'coz i want to start it and i have never worked over it..
[20:05] <wrabbit> what ip address does your computer have?
[20:05] <wrabbit> not from whatsmyip.com, but on your lan
[20:05] <wrabbit> are you in windows?

[20:05] <dheeraj_> I am using linux
[20:06] <wrabbit> oh
[20:06] <wrabbit> type /sbin/ifconfig to get your lan ip
[20:06] <dheeraj_> Okk
[20:06] <wrabbit> inet addr:192.168.0.2

[20:08] <wrabbit> tell us what your network setup is
[20:08] <dheeraj_> I hav a RJ 45 cable
[20:08] <dheeraj_> By ethernet
[20:08] <wrabbit> so directly into the back of your laptop without a router?
[20:08] <dheeraj_> Yes
[20:08] <wrabbit> this will probably be a problem, since your computer probably isnt running a dhcp server

[20:09] <wrabbit> mount the sd card from the linux laptop and edit the config
[20:10] <wrabbit> switch it from dhcp to a static ip address
[20:10] <wrabbit> set it to 192.168.0.2

[20:10] <wrabbit> that sounds good, so im passing it off to Jusii :)
[20:10] <Jusii> lol
[20:11] <Jusii> I'm out...
[20:12] <Jusii> ok, after that run sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog and then turn on your pi, from there you see what ip RPi gets

[22:52] <eightfold> i bought an sd card instead of a usb memory stick because i had heard that rj45 and usb shared bandwidth
[22:52] <ozzzy> they both run through the LAN chip
[22:53] <GuidovanPossum> are there any other similar programs for rip I could try
[22:54] <Sonny_Jim> eightfold: You'll always need at least one SD card to boot
[22:54] <Sonny_Jim> The Pi can't boot without an SD
[22:54] <eightfold> Sonny_Jim: ah, ok
