[0:10] * Shock (~shock@109.101.216.112) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:10] <Shock> hi. I'm trying to boot linux on a raspberry pi using u-boot but it gets stuck at "Starting kernel ...". Any pointers as to what's wrong?
[0:11] <CD-R> Are you using the NOOBS software?
[0:11] <Shock> no
[0:11] <Shock> I'm using u-boot
[0:17] * teeteewhy (~teeteewhy@no.ra.pe) Quit (Max SendQ exceeded)
[0:18] * teeteewhy (~teeteewhy@no.ra.pe) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:24] <ponA> atouk: thanks for the hint!
[0:24] <atouk> expand filesystem?
[0:25] <ponA> yes, i tried it just now and it works again
[0:25] * kossy (a@kossy.org) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:25] <ponA> now i have to find out what filled my filesystem...
[0:26] <atouk> what size sd did you use
[0:27] <ponA> 16gb, but i only copied the image on it so the actual filesystem was 1.7gb
[0:27] <ponA> i use the whole sd now, so i have a 13gb filesystem
[0:28] <atouk> when you create the imag, it only takes as little space as possible to keep dist size down, so the rest of your sd wasn't allocated. expanding the filesystem opened it up
[0:28] <atouk> (image)
[0:28] <atouk> nothing filled it up, it juse wasn't there
[0:29] <ponA> well, the mysql server was running for 2 weeks and suddenly it stopped working without any big files being copied to the pi
[0:30] <atouk> probobly log files etc filled enough that it wasn't happy and wanted more space
[0:30] <ponA> df -h told me the disk is 100% full
[0:31] <atouk> apt-get, etc ate up the little space you had
[0:31] <atouk> what dies it say now?
[0:32] <superae> using mmal motion on raspi with camera board
[0:32] <ponA> apt-get could be the bad guy... i ran an update
[0:32] <superae> cant handle double digit framerates without locking up
[0:32] <superae> i think due to writing to sd card
[0:32] <ponA> now it says 1.7gb are used
[0:32] <superae> is there a way to only stream over http and not write to sd?
[0:33] <atouk> don't have a cam. but you could try moving /root to a usb drive and see if that helps
[0:37] * Turingi (~devon@unaffiliated/devon-hillard/x-7250961) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)

[0:39] <superae> streaming with netcat can handle 30fps at 540p+ quite easily
[0:39] <superae> motion is slower due to writing to sd card i think
[0:39] <superae> can motion send the stream via netcat/socat or something like that?
[0:41] * groundnuty (~orzech@2002:5941:1cab:1:62a4:4cff:fe3d:5e9f) has joined #raspberrypi

[0:42] <groundnuty> hey, I am a long user of setup raspberian+shareport+puseaudio+wired connection. all worked fine. recently I switched to wifi usb dongle and problems started
[0:43] <groundnuty> sound (not sure what is the good english word for that effect) gets 'interrupted'
[0:44] <groundnuty> as in stopd for 0.1 of second and then again starts
[0:46] * chod (~chod@toy-town.demon.co.uk) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)

[0:48] * DeliriumTremens (~DT@reddit/operator/deliriumtremens) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)

[2:43] <SpeedEvil> steve_rox: A close-packed array of XML2 LEDs can emit as much light as one square meter of sunlit window but be only 40mm or so in diameter.
[2:44] <steve_rox> these are erm large emmiters mounted on heatsink plates so slightly wider ish
[2:44] <steve_rox> kinda surface mount
[2:45] <steve_rox> im sleepy , gonna pass out soon
[2:45] <SpeedEvil> http://www.digikey.co.uk/product-detail/en/XMLBWT-00-0000-0000U20E2/XMLBWT-00-0000-0000U20E2DKR-ND/3770906
[2:46] <ponA> i want to get a php website to execute a shell-script via shell_exec(script.sh);, but it won't work. i thought it might be a file permission problem and i found a website which said i should add $user = shell_exec('id'); echo "$user"; $permission = shell_exec('ls -l script.sh'); echo "$permission"; but i dont know how to interpret the output
[2:46] <SpeedEvil> It would however cost about 700 quid, and use 7kW
[2:46] <SpeedEvil> 1.3kW
[2:46] <steve_rox> im not that insane yet
[2:46] <ponA> first output is: uid=33(www-data) gid=33(www-data) groups=33(www-data)
[2:47] <ponA> second output is: -rwxr-xr-x 1 pi pi 60 Oct 15 02:24 script.sh

[2:48] * nx5_off (~nap@unaffiliated/nx5off/x-000000001) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:48] <ponA> i dont want to get file stats, i want to exec the script.sh shell-script
[2:49] <ponA> the output of the two lines ensures that shell_exec() generally works, but it won't work for my script
[2:50] <pksato> ok, why you need a script? php have lots of functions do to lots things.
[2:51] <pksato> php have a security to prevent some shell execs.
[2:51] <ponA> i have temperature sensors connected to the raspberry pi, every minute i use a cronjob to add the sensor-values to a SQL table
[2:52] <ponA> now i want to use gnuplot to plot graphs of the temperatures i measured
[2:53] <pksato> also, php have a graph libs to plot charts like gnuplot.
[2:53] <pksato> I know, I not helping.
[2:53] <ponA> okay, i didn't know that, any hints what i should search for?
[2:54] <ponA> on google, i mean :)
[2:56] <ponA> okay, i got lots of search-results... i'll work through them, thanks pksato

[7:50] * reZo (~gareth@202-180-86-196.callplus.net.nz) has joined #raspberrypi
[7:50] <Xark> oopepe: Google says there is a script "extract-vmlinux" (not sure if this works on RPi kernels, but I would hope so). In general depending on why you want to do this you may just want to re-build the kernel without compression.
[7:50] * reZo (~gareth@202-180-86-196.callplus.net.nz) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[7:51] <oopepe> Xark: Already tried that script :-) But it didnt work. I want to profile an appliction with oprofile and oprofile wants an uncompressed vmlinux image
[7:52] <oopepe> So ill recompile i think
[7:52] <Xark> oopepe: Yeah, sounds like you may want that anyways to keep all the symbols (which I presume the profiler will want).

[10:22] <hydrospell> after using debian for a couple of months
[10:22] <hydrospell> dd takes ages
[10:22] <Leighton> haha : )
[10:23] <Leighton> I'm still new to the RPi, but it's been awesome so far
[10:23] <hydrospell> what are you using it for?
[10:23] <hydrospell> any projects particularly?
[10:23] <Leighton> Well to get initiated I built a little apartment alarm that texts me, but that's it so far. next I have to build a coffee machine that tweets when it makes coffee

[10:24] <hydrospell> what sms gateway are you using?
[10:24] <Leighton> haha quite so, it's for a PR company
[10:24] <Leighton> twilio
[10:24] <hydrospell> thanks checking it out
[10:25] <Leighton> yeah I think they've been pretty soild, been good in the past. I do have a bug in there somewhere but I don't think it's twilio, probably hardware
[10:25] <hydrospell> crap
[10:25] <hydrospell> awesome!
[10:25] <hydrospell> they have quite good support for singapore telcos
[10:26] <Leighton> nice!
[10:26] <hydrospell> yeah
[10:26] <hydrospell> amazing.
[10:27] <Leighton> they sent me an email when I signed up, seemed automated but someone did read my response; they do seem to care a bit more than some, so that's good
[10:29] <hydrospell> i see
[10:29] <hydrospell> and service wise they have been solid as you said?
[10:29] <hydrospell> does it take long to receive an sms you send through their gateway?

[10:30] <Leighton> service seems really good. I've been billed in $20 USD chunks, and then just subtracts from that. Most of the time a sms will come through to my phone in just under 2 seconds
[10:30] <hydrospell> wow
[10:30] <hydrospell> nice
[10:30] <Leighton> every now and then though, might be some lag, but then again, could be me : )
[10:31] <hydrospell> inconsistencies is to be expected with 'mass' services like these I suppose
[10:31] <Leighton> yeah I think so, overall though it's good
[10:31] <hydrospell> You just inspired me to try a couple of things with raspi + my own cellphone :)
[10:31] <Leighton> nice : )
[10:31] <hydrospell> ok freaking dd needs to be done
[10:31] <hydrospell> come on
[10:31] <Leighton> yeah I like the texting idea and it's not too expensive
[10:31] <Leighton> haha
[10:31] <hydrospell> ugh.
[10:32] <Leighton> I've only installed raspbian so far, is that somewhat a base choice or are there other better (used objectively here, haha) options?
[10:32] <hydrospell> i've been on raspbian the fast couple months as I mentioned - really picked up a lot of cli skills with this because te worst that can happen is I reflash my SD card
[10:33] <hydrospell> now I'm attracted to try Arch just because it promises a bare system where you can install only the software you want on top of it
[10:33] <Leighton> for sure
[10:33] <Leighton> yeah I've heard that from a few people, it might be time to check it out
[10:33] <hydrospell> so want to try out stuff like x, xmonad, setting up a cool desktop environment
[10:33] <hydrospell> while keeping the raspi running reasonably fast
[10:33] <Leighton> I've pretty much just been in the ubuntu/debian boat so far
[10:33] <hydrospell> debian gui runs too slow for me - I'm on a model B

[10:34] <hydrospell> me too except I have it hidden behind my TV
[10:34] <Leighton> hah I like that
[10:34] <hydrospell> so I had this failed experiemnt trying to turn it into a media player
[10:34] <hydrospell> on top of the debian stack
[10:35] <hydrospell> guess it's too much for that tiny machine
[10:35] <Leighton> uh oh, just speed memory issues?
[10:35] <hydrospell> yep I guess so
[10:35] <hydrospell> hence trying out this 'leaner' system

[10:36] <hydrospell> that one sounds like fun
[10:37] <Leighton> nah not yet

[10:38] <jameswatling> I just got the camera board and currently setting it up. Exciting
[10:38] <Leighton> jameswatling: oh awesome

[13:55] <hydrospell> my arch linux ambitions have been truncated abruptly by the absurdity of trying to configure a static ip address on my local network on the os.

[13:57] <hydrospell> haha
[13:58] <Leighton> ping me later, I'm putting together some simple stuff to update the local ip to mirror a public ip, is that what you're running into?
[13:58] <hydrospell> nope. I just want the raspi to stick to 192.168.1.3 whenever it boots up
[13:58] <hydrospell> was a one-liner in debian
[13:58] <hydrospell> took me half an hour in arch with no results
[13:59] <hydrospell> you're playing with arch at the moment?
[13:59] <Leighton> oooooo
[13:59] <Leighton> no just raspbian right now, but I want to be able to text my RPi, which needs a static ip, but I don't want to pay for a business plan from my isp : )
[13:59] <hydrospell> ah
[13:59] <hydrospell> for that
[13:59] <hydrospell> I'm using afraid.org
[14:00] <hydrospell> so raspi checks every 10 mins (crontab) for its own external ip
[14:00] * mythos (~mythos@unaffiliated/mythos) has joined #raspberrypi
[14:00] <hydrospell> and makes http request to afraid.org that updates the ip of your domain name to your external ip
[14:00] <Leighton> hmm, but same thing right? I mean you have to update there for dynamic, or write code
[14:00] <Leighton> yeah
[14:00] <Leighton> I'd probably just write a tiny scraper to grab it and check
[14:01] <hydrospell> the only code I had to write was a one liner in the crontab to curl this url
[14:01] <Leighton> this site is interesting though
[14:01] * Benguin is now known as Benguin0
[14:01] <hydrospell> not sure whether it makes sense to you

[14:01] <Leighton> for sure : ) I'm a code guy though so I don't mind
[14:01] <hydrospell> kewl
[14:02] <Leighton> I figure maybe write a daemon to check and then write when needed
[14:02] <hydrospell> i'm a proponent of I can't code so I'd like to get awawy with as little code as possible (hurhur)
[14:02] <Leighton> lole nothing wrong with that
[14:02] <hydrospell> what service are you using as a DNS
[14:02] <hydrospell> hm what's the correct term
[14:02] <hydrospell> oh! you're writing direct to your domain name vendor?
[14:02] <Leighton> isp
[14:02] <Leighton> ?
[14:02] <hydrospell> i.e. namecheap
[14:02] <Leighton> oh not now
[14:02] <hydrospell> e.g. * sorry
[14:02] <Leighton> I am using them though, I like namecheap
[14:03] <hydrospell> wait wrong assumption. you're just using ip, no domain name

[14:03] <Leighton> I'd write a daemon to grab my ip, check it, if needed it would replace my ip in my apps

[14:03] <hydrospell> yup yup
[14:03] <Leighton> and then also update twilios REST sms recieve area

[14:20] <quetzakubica> ramdisk?
[14:20] <Sonny_Jim> Yes
[14:20] <Sonny_Jim> You know, a disk that is RAM based?
[14:21] <patagonicus> tmpfs is normally a better idea as that can get swapped (which you don't really want, but its better than running out of memory)
[14:21] <RahulAN> I want to connect Rpi via ssh.. How can i..??
[14:21] <Sonny_Jim> Sure
[14:22] <Sonny_Jim> RahulAN: If you are on Windows, download PuTTY

[14:22] <quetzakubica> Sonny_Jim: so should I just move my django app there and then run it?
[14:22] <hydrospell> Leighton sorry yep. so RSVP is by Mailchimp, which calls a webhook (a file on my vps) which generates the total rsvp count, a unique QR code for each attendee and such
[14:22] <RahulAN> No I am on linux..
[14:23] <RahulAN> I Dont hav external display and keyboard..
[14:23] <hydrospell> a crontab on the server checks previous number vs new number and calls python file which decides whether to text me or not

[15:53] <RahulAN> But whats the problem here..??

[15:54] <pksato> RahulAN: ping 192.168.3.14 get a replay?
[15:54] <patagonicus> RahulAN: The Pi gets it's IP address via DHCP by default. If you don't have a DHCP connected to the IP, it won't get one. Normally the router of a network will have DHCP server running, however you do not have a router conntected so your PC will have to do the work. Or you have to configure static IP addresses.
[15:55] <RahulAN> patagonicus: I had configured static ip
[15:55] <mikroskeem> RahulAN: if u have thomson 7** router, then rpi won't get ip address from it

[21:37] <steve_rox> thats all
[21:37] <steve_rox> board is a rev1
[21:38] <steve_rox> kraptv: that okay?
[21:38] <kraptv> steve_rox - fantastic. I see that you've never overvoltage'd your system!

[21:39] <theaftermath> I've over volted mine
[21:39] <steve_rox> yay
[21:39] <kraptv> theaftermath: run that command and give me the output.
[21:39] <theaftermath> I can't I'm at school
[21:39] <theaftermath> well in school. homeschooled
[21:39] <kraptv> or better yet - steve and aftermath, can you run my latest system-info script and tell me whether you get a warning or not?
[21:39] <kraptv> http://ryan.sayr.eu/~ryan/system-info/wip/system-info-current.sh
[21:40] <kraptv> heh heh, no problem, don't want to interrupt school.
[21:40] <theaftermath> I'll run it later for you
[21:40] <steve_rox> hopefully this wont trash anything
[21:41] <kraptv> ha! no, it won't trash anything.
[21:41] <kraptv> hopefully you're not running mission critical medical systems on your raspberry pi though. ;-)
[21:41] <steve_rox> apparently im missing something called bc
[21:41] <steve_rox> my voice chat server is :-P
[21:41] <kraptv> yeah, just apt-get install bc and you'll be able to do floating point math.
[21:42] <steve_rox> hope is not too big
[21:42] <kraptv> nah. it's small.
[21:42] * pingo (pingo@188-230-221-197.dynamic.t-2.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[21:42] <theaftermath> I thought raspbian supported hard-float
[21:42] <kraptv> it's used to calculate the temperature (in fahrenheit and celsius) and display.
[21:42] <pingo> Anyone know of a cooler mini displaz for the r.pi than http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-3-Digital-LCD-Slim-Car-Rearview-Monitor-Reverse-Parking-Sensor-Camera-/231031903227?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35ca9313fb&vxp=mtr ?
[21:42] <theaftermath> oh maybe not in bash
[21:42] <kraptv> It's not the hard vs. soft concern, it's the fact that bash only does integer math.
[21:43] <theaftermath> Yah I figured it out LOL
[21:43] <steve_rox> almost installedd
[21:43] <kraptv> woo!
[21:43] <steve_rox> (i think)
[21:43] <kraptv> now if I could only find someone with a RaspberryPi Model A that could run this little utility.
[21:43] <kraptv> because I still haven't found anyone with one that can run it.

[22:11] <theaftermath> well if you run the sensor off the 5 volt supply and hook the logic line directly to the pi a 1 will be 5V
[22:11] <theaftermath> I just use two resistors and make a voltage divider

[22:13] <theaftermath> you can either run the sensor on 3.3V if it supports that. Or make a simple voltage divider out of resistors.

[22:20] <theaftermath> what did you do to your gpio pins?
[22:21] <murple> theaftermath: But isn't it right that when I first set a pin to be an input or output, then the next time I start the PI it will start in the same mode?
[22:21] <ShorTie> na, all gets cleared on reboot
[22:21] <theaftermath> No, they are set when your program runs. I don't know what the default settings upon boot are.
[22:22] <steve_rox> annoying when you reboot and it triggers your relay board
[22:22] <murple> theaftermath: The background for the question is that the PI wouldn't start until I removed the connections from the GPIO pins so I assumed some of them were somehow wrongly configured.
[22:22] <murple> ShorTie: Oh I see.
[22:22] <theaftermath> murple sounds like you shorted something out
[22:22] <murple> okay, I thought it "remembered" settings.
[22:22] <steve_rox> is it acting werid then?
[22:23] <murple> theaftermath: Yeah, I probably did. I have the tiniest breadboard with what feels like a zillion jumper cables running around on it.
[22:23] <theaftermath> been there done that. Be careful, I was lucky the first time I did that to my pi. I just lost the gpio pin but the rest still worked.
[22:24] <theaftermath> then the second time I wasn't so lucky and had to get a new one
[22:24] <murple> steve_rox: I think it's fine now and I want to try to reconnect the GPIO cables. I thought I had disconnected the 3.3V and GND pins so that there wouldn't be any power going out on the cables, but maybe I completely screwed up.
[22:24] <steve_rox> hmmm
[22:24] <steve_rox> suppose you could measure it with a multi meter
[22:24] <steve_rox> least the voltage pin
[22:25] <murple> theaftermath: Ouch. I think I've probably shorted it more than a few times... although I still think I'm being careful.... oh well... I'll look over my connections and try to connect again.
[22:25] <murple> steve_rox: Right, I don't think it's a big issue. We'll see what happens.
[22:25] <steve_rox> ive allways been very carefull with my gpio pins
[22:25] <murple> Thank you all for your help so far.
