[0:56] <f00bar80> shiftplusone, which adapter you mean ?
[0:57] <shiftplusone> f00bar80, http://everest-electronics.com/img/kingston_micro2.jpg
[0:58] <f00bar80> shiftplusone, so this adapter is builtin on Rpi?
[0:58] * DataLinkDroid (~DataLinkD@1.150.136.190) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:59] <shiftplusone> no
[0:59] <shiftplusone> It just comes with pretty much every microsd card when you buy them.
[1:00] <f00bar80> shiftplusone, how then it reads from the adapter?
[1:00] <sney> shiftplusone: good luck with this one
[1:00] <sney> if you give a mouse a cookie, he will expect you to google absolutely everything for him from that point on
[1:02] <shiftplusone> yeah
[1:02] * Demon_Jester (465e54dd@gateway/web/freenode/ip.70.94.84.221) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:02] <sney> f00bar80: if you expect people to give you every answer to your questions, you will _never_ learn anything useful. seriously. go search the interwebs.
[1:02] <shiftplusone> f00bar80, the pi can read a regular sd card. If you don't understand the adapter, just get a pi bundled with a card.
[1:03] <Demon_Jester> Anyone running a cloud/torrent box on their pi?
[1:03] <sney> I've heard people asking for help with those things so I'm inclined to say yes
[1:04] <Demon_Jester> I am gonna do it, so I can remotely add .torrents. I wanted to ask on peoples personal opinion, If you stream videos from the pi do you do it through the hdmi or over the network like roku/ps3/xbox 360
[1:05] <sney> the pi works better playing videos locally. i/o is pretty limited but the gpu is powerful for video playback
[1:05] <sney> so that would be hdmi, rather than streaming
[1:05] <Demon_Jester> Ok, if I do keep it at the tv downstairs, I will have to connect the pi wirelessly and torrent it that way.
[1:06] <sney> just make sure you have enough power for your pi and the wifi dongle
[1:06] <shiftplusone> Demon_Jester, I had this going for a while. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/175702/owncloud.png
[1:07] <shiftplusone> owncloud was too slow, so I just left rtorrent
[1:08] * Rice14 (4a65ad6d@gateway/web/freenode/ip.74.101.173.109) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:08] * picca (~picca@90.218.13.136) Quit (Quit: Lingo - http://www.lingoirc.com)
[1:09] <Demon_Jester> does owncloud have a android app for remote connectivity
[1:10] <shiftplusone> yes
[1:10] <Rice14> Question, is there a way to set my pi to automatically connect to a WPA2 network in /etc/network/interfaces?
[1:10] <Rice14> Or any way at all really
[1:10] <shiftplusone> yes
[1:10] <sney> wpasupplicant
[1:10] <Demon_Jester> under wireless and network then again it maybe different since i know that works in openwrt like that
[1:11] <Demon_Jester> wpa supplicant, ya thats the file.
[1:12] <Rice14> So edit that, and I won't have to use the graphic interface to log in?
[1:12] <pksato> Demon_Jester: https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse#wpa_supplicant
[1:13] <Demon_Jester> I dont need it, rice14 does.
[1:13] <pksato> ops, is to Rice14
[1:13] <Demon_Jester> ya :)
[1:13] <sney> ha, I was just getting that link
[1:14] <sney> that article + the debian refcard would be useful links to have in the topic
[1:14] <Rice14> Now I'm not entirely sure that it is WPA2, my knowledge is limited on the subject
[1:14] <Rice14> But I do know it requires both a username and password to log onto
[1:14] <sney> wpasupplicant is what you use regardless of whether it's wpa/wpa2/wpa-psk
[1:14] <sney> the only one that doesn't use that is wep
[1:14] <Demon_Jester> it can be wpa2 i had it working just fine with wpa2
[1:14] <Rice14> Except, where's the username go?
[1:14] <sney> and wep might as well not even be security
[1:15] <Demon_Jester> username is the ssid i think is what he meant
[1:15] <sney> ssid is the name of the access point/ap network
[1:15] <pksato> ah... if need username and password, e wpa PEAP
[1:15] <pksato> need more complex configuration.
[1:16] <Rice14> pksato's on the right track
[1:16] <sney> I'm sure the basics are the same and the syntax is in the man page
[1:16] * guysoft42 (guy@5.144.58.208) Quit (Read error: Operation timed out)

[1:19] * kcj (~casey@unaffiliated/kcj) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:20] <pksato> wpa PEAP normaly are used on profissional environment, university , schools, etc. Ask TI staff about linux configuration.
[1:22] <sney> IT staff often don't know anything about linux configuration that isn't network-manager. besides as long as you have the credentials and iwlist you can get everything you need
[1:22] * leandroa (~leandroa@181.28.24.215) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:23] <Rice14> I think I got it now, thank you!
[1:24] <Rice14> Oh, also, can I just add the new network underneath an old one to have both auto-connect or can it only hold one at a time?
[1:24] <Demon_Jester> depends on the wifi card I think.
[1:24] <pksato> need a wifi manager daemon.
[1:24] <sney> there's a debian developer who has his interfaces file set up to attach to public wifi along his bus route
[1:25] <sney> it's possible, but often more effort than is really worth it
[1:25] <Demon_Jester> sney, do you mean when he is waiting for the bus or is his pi on the bus hidden? :o
[1:25] <sney> wicd is a good option for doing it with a daemon without needing X
[1:26] <sney> Demon_Jester: it's not on a pi, it's on an eee netbook. and it just floats from one lan to the next during his commute so he can have internet
[1:27] <Demon_Jester> oh ya thats understandable, i mean if i was on bus route. I would set it up to scan for the free wifi i pick up earlier'

[11:44] <Jusii> is there any difference to power RPi through microUSB or through GPIO header pins P1-02?
[11:45] <Jusii> or P1-04
[11:45] <shiftplusone> Only that you're bypassing the polyfuse
[11:45] <mgottschlag> yes, there is a fuse between microusb and the rest
[11:45] <Jusii> ok
[11:45] <Jusii> are 02 and 04 just connected together?
[11:45] <shiftplusone> (imho, the polyfuse is more of a hindrance than a safety feature)

[13:05] <phuh> what are things raspberrypi can do but arduino cannot?
[13:06] <shiftplusone> O_o
[13:06] <shiftplusone> play HD video, run a full linux distro and much more.
[13:06] <ln-> that's like asking what are things that a fighter jet can do that a sailplane cannot.
[13:06] <Lordow> two completly different things
[13:07] <Jck_True_> phuh: Depends... Can you bitbang HDMI from an arduino?
[13:07] <shiftplusone> There's only a little bit of an overlap between what an arduino can do and a pi can do.
[13:07] <shiftplusone> When compared to either devices full functionality.
[13:09] <Jck_True_> Thinking of getting a CubieTruck this winter - The Pi is lacking a bit of power to run maritime charts :)
[13:09] <phuh> i have sw background but new to hardware stuff. trying to learn the basics. i bought udoo board (http://udoo.org) because it says it's like Raspberry PI + Arduino. but i don't know how to best utilize this.
[13:10] <phuh> for you as raspberry pi users is there any limitation for not having this capability while working on some hardware project?
[13:10] <shiftplusone> which capacility?
[13:11] <phuh> arduino compatibility
[13:11] <shiftplusone> There is arduino compatibility.
[13:11] <shiftplusone> You can easily hook one up to a pi
[13:12] <Davespice> yeah, just use the uart, that's what most people do
[13:12] <Jck_True_> phuh: The "main" difference between Arduino and what you can do with a Raspberry is real time
[13:12] <Davespice> don't even need any level shifting
[13:12] * Turingi (~devon@unaffiliated/devon-hillard/x-7250961) has joined #raspberrypi
[13:12] <phuh> real time?
[13:13] <Jck_True_> phuh: Well that was a bad explenation
[13:14] <Jck_True_> phuh: The choice between an arduino and a Raspberry comes down to what problem you're solving
[13:14] <shiftplusone> ^ that
[13:14] <phuh> just briefly, what are some sample problems for each one?
[13:14] <Jck_True_> phuh: A digital clock
[13:14] <phuh> that's something i'm trying to figure out right now.
[13:15] <shiftplusone> phuh, what do you actually want to do?
[13:15] <phuh> want to learn hw
[13:15] <Jck_True_> Buy an arduino kit if you wanna learn hardware
[13:15] <Jck_True_> Raspberry if you wanna learn software
[13:15] <phuh> have this board (udoo) that can do both raspberry pi and arduino, but don't know how to learn
[13:15] <shiftplusone> in that case, either one
[13:16] <shiftplusone> phuh, come up with a project idea and then start looking into how to accomplish it.
[13:16] <shiftplusone> Most people start just by controlling LEDs and reading switches
[13:16] <phuh> can you do that with raspberry pi too?
[13:16] <Jck_True_> Sure easily
[13:17] <shiftplusone> Then expand out by learning to use SPI devices, UART and so on.

[13:17] <phuh> any limitation on raspberry pi that arduino board doesn't have?
[13:17] <shiftplusone> As you do, you will pick up on the basic ideas behind electronics, like ohms law and capacitors.
[13:18] <Tachyon`> not forgetting transistors
[13:18] <Tachyon`> as you need htem to drive any sort of load
[13:18] <Jck_True_> phuh: Power usage - Boot time - Price
[13:18] <shiftplusone> ah, yes 'course
[13:18] <Tachyon`> the arduino seems to be serving a good purpose ther
[13:18] * Hydra (~Hydra@46-65-54-87.zone16.bethere.co.uk) Quit (Read error: Operation timed out)
[13:19] <Tachyon`> nothing like i twhen I was a kid
[13:19] <Tachyon`> you wanted a microcontroller, you bought a 6502 or Z80 and went from there -.o
[13:19] <Jck_True_> phuh: And the Arduino platform is "smaller" so in theory less to go wrong :)
[13:19] <Tachyon`> plus with the shields there's less scope for expensive mistakes for those starting out
[13:20] * andreiiar (~andrei@unaffiliated/andreiiar) has left #raspberrypi
[13:20] <Tachyon`> really is an excellent platform and combines nicely with the pi if more is needed
[13:21] * owen_ (~owen@180.200.149.73) Quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
[13:21] <shiftplusone> There are minor difference which may affect your design, like the availability of PWM or the current you can draw per pin. But I think the major difference is that arduino behaves more predictably when you are working with signals where timing is very important.
[13:22] <Jck_True_> shiftplusone: And the Arduino will likely be more stable (Since less things to go wrong)
[13:22] <shiftplusone> yeah
[13:22] <phuh> hmm anything important i should know about timing/realtime thing? i don't grasp on what it is and why that is important
[13:23] <Jck_True_> phuh: Uhm a processor can only do one thing at a time - The way multitasking works on a pc is by changing quickly between all apps running
[13:24] <Jck_True_> phuh: Now say in your program you put power on one pin - and less than a milisecond later you have to put power on another pin
[13:24] <shiftplusone> phuh, it's unlikely to be important to you. At least not as a beginner.
[13:24] * badass (~badass@unaffiliated/badass) has joined #raspberrypi
[13:24] <Jck_True_> phuh: On the pi you will never know when the next line of code is executed
[13:24] <Jck_True_> Could be 1ns - could be much much longer
[13:25] <phuh> Jck_True_: aha because it's running on an operating system?
[13:25] <Jck_True_> phuh: Correct - The OS shares CPU time with every other process running
[13:25] <shiftplusone> phuh, even if the operating system is removed and you run 'bare metal' code, the pi's gpu sometimes takes control of the CPU.
[13:26] <phuh> and arduino is like raw stuff you work with. that's why you said it's more predictable
[13:26] <Jck_True_> phuh: But as shiftplusone said - Its very very unlikely this will be an issue for the most basic stuff :)
[13:26] <Tachyon`> yeah, real time stuf fon pi is problematic
[13:27] <Tachyon`> and avr/pics are essential for that

[13:27] <Tachyon`> not sure if risc os is realtime or not, it might be
[13:27] <phuh> if my goal is to build some hardware that'll potentially go in mass production mode, should i avoid raspberry pi?
[13:28] <shiftplusone> phuh, depends.
[13:28] <Tachyon`> no, just be aware of the limitations

[13:29] <Jck_True_> phuh: Imagine a stopwatch - Would you use a Pi in that?
[13:29] <Jck_True_> phuh: From the time you put in the battery it would take 40 seconds for it to boot
[13:29] <shiftplusone> O_o 40 seconds?
[13:29] <Jck_True_> Not to mention draw your batteries in 2 hours
[13:29] <phuh> was gonna say i actually don't know the right answer to that question. don't really know strengths and weaknesses
[13:29] <Jck_True_> shiftplusone: You know what I mean :P
[13:29] <Tachyon`> 74595s are useful if you're getting low on output pins
[13:30] <phuh> so in that case raspberry pi is definitely a no go
[13:30] <shiftplusone> Jck_True_, alright... I'll withhold my pedantry.... for now. >=/
[13:31] <Tachyon`> a pi could boot much mreo quickly if you wrote your own OS in ARM
[13:31] <phuh> anything that doesn't make sense to have a bootup time is not good right?
[13:31] <shiftplusone> phuh, are you familiar with CNC machines at all?
[13:31] <Tachyon`> I believe MIT or somewher have a tutorial for that
[13:31] <phuh> not at all. really new to this hardware stuff

[13:31] <Tachyon`> ah yes
[13:31] <Tachyon`> http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/projects/raspberrypi/tutorials/os/
[13:31] <Tachyon`> my mistake -.o
[13:32] <shiftplusone> you can boot a linux OS within seconds as well.
[13:32] <Jck_True_> phuh: Also depends on what you wanna interface with - You wanna connect it to the internet? Pi has an ethernet port - Wanna connect a TV? the Pi has a HDMI port :)
[13:32] <shiftplusone> And you can boot bare metal code instantly.
[13:32] <Tachyon`> well, if you hand rolly our own kernel
[13:32] <Tachyon`> and aye, bare metal code is as quick as teh bootloader
[13:32] <shiftplusone> but why would you... there are other reasons why you wouldn't use a pi for a stopwatch... it's not a cost effective or practical solution.
[13:32] <SpeedEvil> The GPU has to boot first, and you can't code on that.

[13:34] <Tachyon`> I was pondering one but the high price put me off, if you have the quad, does hte SATA port support multiplexing?
[13:35] <phuh> Tachyon`: Dual and Quad. as complete beginner though i feel i probably should have bought one to begin with.
[13:35] <phuh> Tachyon`: i can check it for you if you teach me how
[13:35] <Tachyon`> I'm not sure
[13:35] <Tachyon`> it's multiple drives froma single sata port
[13:35] <Tachyon`> it'd be usable for NAS purposes if it supporst that
[13:35] <Jck_True_> Tachyon`: Uhhhh :) I didn't know about Sata Multiplexing... Cheap way to make a NAS if you find a board supporting....

[13:36] <Jck_True_> I'm mostly angry at the power requirements
[13:36] <Tachyon`> and run a zfs system
[13:36] <Jck_True_> Latest I found took 25W - Without any drives
[13:37] <Tachyon`> 25w isn't that much
[13:37] <Tachyon`> are you nitending to run from battery?
[13:37] <Jck_True_> No - But having it run 24/7
[13:37] <shiftplusone> phuh, the cost and practical considerations? For a stopwatch, you can get a single chip that would handle all of the timing, inputs and outputs for less than a dollar (probably, I haven't looked into it). Why spend $35+shipping for features you won't need or use? On the pratcical side of things, you'd want a stopwatch to be portable. You don't want a massive battery that will drain within a few
[13:37] <shiftplusone> hours. Hell, the size of the pi alone makes it too big.
[13:37] <shiftplusone> phuh, I think you're overthinking it. Pick a project and go from there.
[13:37] <Tachyon`> oh that reminds me
[13:38] <Tachyon`> I need ot make the AVR on my gertboard talk
[13:38] <Tachyon`> found a speech synthesis package for that particular one (32K, forget the number)

[13:38] <Tachyon`> ???
[13:38] <phuh> shiftplusone: thx~

[13:42] <Jck_True_> Tachyon`: Doing a bit of research - eSATA is just a SATA port with additonal power right?
[13:42] <Tachyon`> yes
[13:42] <Tachyon`> you sometimes see psychotic manufacturers combining them with USB ports on laptops
[13:42] <Jck_True_> So if the CubieTruck supports a SATA and the Raid cabinet supports eSata you should be okay if you include an extra PSU right?
[13:43] <Tachyon`> er, I don't know, you may not get moer than one drive supported
[13:43] <Tachyon`> it depends what the sata chipset supports
[13:43] <Tachyon`> the linux kernel supports more than one lately, but if the hardware does not that won'thelpy ou
[13:43] <Jck_True_> Yeah I kinda don't wanna blow 400USD just to check :P
[13:44] <Jck_True_> Slick little case through
[13:44] <Tachyon`> nobody ever knows if it's supported
[13:44] <Tachyon`> it's part of the SATA 2 spec

[15:21] <shiftplusone> Doesn't matter if it's new. Many card just don't work.
[15:21] <shiftplusone> (but that is not necessarily the issue)
[15:22] <niso_> :O , how i can check if its bootable?
[15:22] <shiftplusone> try a known good image.
[15:22] <shiftplusone> try booting noobs offline install
[15:22] <shiftplusone> *online
[15:22] <niso_> openelec isnt good?
[15:22] <shiftplusone> openelec is very good
[15:23] <tig|> oh the other question is have you booted this pi before? (ie is the psu strong enough)
[15:23] <shiftplusone> I just don't know how you're installing it, so I can't verify that you're not making any mistakes
[15:23] <niso_> im trying that , ive craated two partition , FAT32 and EXT4 , and i see that on minitool partition wizard but still nothing happend
[15:23] <niso_> i just took iphone charge head and connect it to tablet micro usb
[15:24] <niso_> i read on google that just red light means the pi does not recognize it as bootable?
[15:24] * shurizzle (~shura@unaffiliated/shurizzle) Quit (Quit: bye.)
[15:24] <shiftplusone> The red light means that it cannot read the firmware
[15:24] <shiftplusone> which means either it's not there, or it can't read the card.
[15:24] <shiftplusone> or the sd holder is dirty/broken

[15:25] <niso_> :O i saw on it : 5V ~1A
[15:25] <shiftplusone> Labels don't mean anything
[15:26] <shiftplusone> (but that is the least likely reason, I think)
[15:26] <shiftplusone> usually when the supply is terrible, the pi boots and runs into trouble later on.
