[1:36] <roxlu> hi guys! I just connected my webcam to my rpi and dmesg shows the correct info
[1:36] <roxlu> but I don't get a /dev/video0, why not?
[1:37] * eephyne (~eephyne@eephyne.dyndns.org) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[1:37] <Firehopper> its prolly a different device
[1:38] <pksato> non compatible webcam?
[1:38] <roxlu> hmm modinfo uvcvideo, says uvcvideo is not found either
[1:38] <roxlu> I've installed arch linux arm.. on my arch linux (pc version), it works fine
[1:39] <sney> the raspbian kernel has that module. don't know about arch
[1:39] <roxlu> look like it doesn't :(
[1:40] <pksato> remove webcam
[1:40] * Leighton (~Leighton@ip-64-134-225-72.public.wayport.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:40] <pksato> run sudo dmesg -c

[1:41] * _cheney (~cheney@nat.sierrabravo.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:42] <sney> dmesg is in /bin and does not require root privileges. you kids and you sudo cult
[1:42] <pksato> dmesg -c need root.
[1:43] * sco` (~ross@unaffiliated/sco/x-3425046) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:43] <roxlu> well this is lame :) I would have expected this to be an issue :)
[1:43] <pksato> normaly, I not prepend sudo.
[1:44] <roxlu> compiled 7 dependencies w/o any problems and thought that would give me lots of problem ..
[1:44] <roxlu> turns out I can't see my webcam :)
[1:44] <pksato> roxlu: It show only device enumerated on USB bus.
[1:44] <sney> pksato: whoops, indeed
[1:44] <pksato> dont have informarion about module assigned.
[1:44] <roxlu> I need to figure out how to enable uvc video on arch arm
[1:45] * Firehopper (~Firehoppe@pool-71-175-192-7.phlapa.east.verizon.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving)

[1:47] * Geniack (~Geniack@unaffiliated/geniack) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:47] <sney> roxlu: is there a kernel config text file in /boot, or is /proc/config.gz present?
[1:49] * sco` (~ross@unaffiliated/sco/x-3425046) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:49] <sney> the configuration line for uvcvideo is CONFIG_USB_VIDEO_CLASS and if it's not 'y' or 'm' then you don't have kernel support
[1:49] <sney> (and that's a really dumb thing for them to leave out)
[1:50] <roxlu> sney: no there is no such file
[1:50] * Geniack_ (~Geniack@unaffiliated/geniack) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[1:51] <sney> roxlu: neither? what's in /boot?
[1:51] <roxlu> https://gist.github.com/roxlu/2dd8a7fc70f64a28c002
[1:51] <pksato> roxlu: get any line? /sbin/modinfo uvcvideo| grep -i 082d
[1:51] <sney> pksato: he said module not found earlier
[1:52] <sney> roxlu: what's in refind_linux.conf?
[1:52] <roxlu> hmmm this is the info of modinfo: https://gist.github.com/roxlu/5e28ef85f40864ec1cab
[1:52] * Datalink (~Datalink@unaffiliated/datalink) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[1:52] <sney> you do have it?
[1:53] <roxlu> hm it seems.. I used modprope before
[1:53] <roxlu> so it exists, but it's not loaded I guess
[1:53] <sney> modprobe just loads it with no error
[1:53] <sney> or no output that is
[1:53] <roxlu> so to enable it, what do I need to do?
[1:54] * jaytk (~jaytk@108-232-157-80.lightspeed.tukrga.sbcglobal.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:54] <sney> modprobe it
[1:54] <roxlu> "modprope uvcvideo"
[1:54] <roxlu> like that?
[1:54] * spacebug^ (~spacebug@h22n5-sde-d2.ias.bredband.telia.com) Quit (Quit: ["Textual IRC Client: www.textualapp.com"])
[1:55] <pksato> roxlu: what is version of kernel of you desktop arch? uname -a

[1:56] <roxlu> yeah sorry
[1:56] <roxlu> when I do: modinfo uvcvideo, I get: modinfo: ERROR: Module alias uvcvideo not found.
[1:56] <sney> yarp, it's not there
[1:57] <sney> so what's in that .conf file in /boot
[1:57] <roxlu> https://gist.github.com/roxlu/c87742b0798576990e61
[1:57] <sney> dang
[1:57] <roxlu> oh no... haha
[1:57] <roxlu> arg..
[1:57] <roxlu> thats also from the wrong terminal
[1:57] <sney> why not use raspbian
[1:58] * spacebug^ (~spacebug@h22n5-sde-d2.ias.bredband.telia.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:58] <roxlu> this is the contents of /boot on my rpi: https://gist.github.com/roxlu/c78b29776b11c1b77e1e
[1:58] <roxlu> sney: yeah.. I might step over to tht one
[1:58] <roxlu> but I spend about 4 hours compiling dependencies .. I hope to get this working quicker
[1:59] * jaytk (~jaytk@108-232-157-80.lightspeed.tukrga.sbcglobal.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[1:59] <roxlu> with the config.txt https://gist.github.com/roxlu/c78b29776b11c1b77e1e
[2:00] <sney> yeah that's just a pi thing.
[2:00] <sney> basically your choices are: install raspbian and work with that, or somehow get a kernel with the uvcvideo module for your arch install. which would probably mean compiling it
[2:00] <roxlu> :(
[2:01] <roxlu> I guess it's worth spending time in a cross compiler at this point
[2:01] <sney> yeah. I mean, for the kernel, you don't *really* need to package it
[2:01] <sney> and afaik building a kernel with a cross compiler isn't *that* much of a pain in the ass

[3:22] <tzarc> nothing stopping you from hooking one up
[3:22] <tzarc> kinda the point
[3:22] <Vialas> how is it not a fault?
[3:22] <pksato> Its is designed to user make things to use with rpi.
[3:22] <Vialas> yes, i want user to make digital radio input into raspberry pi
[3:24] <pksato> DRM radio can tunned with RPi, using a $15 usb DVB-T dongle.
[3:24] <Vialas> what you mean pksato

[11:02] <Chetic> I'm having trouble getting my SCL line to be pulled low enough
[11:02] <Chetic> but I don't get how that can be a problem since the open-drain of the slave should be 0 ohm?
[11:03] <Chetic> as opposed to the pullup resistor which is supposedly 1.8kohm

[11:18] <gordonDrogon> I2C is normally drive by an open-collector output... It just has to pull it lower than about 1.1v.

[17:17] <Sonny_Jim> Or just plug the sat box and Pi into a switch/router
[17:17] <Bozza> I will check in a second
[17:18] <Bozza> Sonny_Jim: yea the sat box is in a separate room but I have plugged it into a router before it goes into the wall

[20:06] <bludragon> oh. hm. good luck then.
[20:06] <knob> Thanks! I'm rebooting now... lets see if changing the value from gb to us will make it work
[20:07] <knob> I'm a linux noob... so that's another question.. Can I compile stuff inside this virtual machine... and then copy them over to my physical rPi?
[20:07] <knob> I mean, will it work if it's the same distro?
[20:08] <bludragon> yes knob.
[20:08] <knob> Awesome!!!

[21:20] <alcuadrado> do I need NOOBS to install raspbian?
[21:20] <sney> alcuadrado: no, there are several ways to install
[21:22] <sney> foofoobar: all of the pi's i/o passes over a single usb 2.0 bus, unlike your other computers which surely have pci. I'm not sure what the max throughput is for downloading but 700kB/s seems reasonable

[21:22] <alcuadrado> great sney
[21:23] <alcuadrado> but uncompressing the image into the sd is not enough, right?
[21:23] <sney> alcuadrado: right, it needs to be written directly to the sd. from linux you can use cat or dd, from windows use win32diskimager - http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/
[21:24] <alcuadrado> without touching the partition table?
[21:24] <sney> foofoobar: reduce local disk i/o when trying to use the network? also, writes to a usb disk might be quicker than the sd card
[21:24] <sney> alcuadrado: the image contains its own partition table.
[21:25] <alcuadrado> I see
[21:25] <alcuadrado> awesome
[21:25] <alcuadrado> thought it was just an iso
[21:25] <foofoobar> sney, the sabnzbd is writing to an attached usb drive already
[21:25] <foofoobar> usb2 should be able to write faster than 700kb/s..
[21:26] <sney> then just be efficient and remember that this is a $35 computer intended for learning, not a high performance multimedia computer
[21:28] <foofoobar> sney, maybe I can stop the xmbc to get more cpu power

[22:13] <Bozza> There is a difference between Ethernet and ethernet?
[22:14] <Bozza> But thanks for the info
[22:14] <sney> no, I mean assuming you mean ethernet rather than ip

[22:18] <sney> aha, so you did mean ip.
[22:18] <Bozza> Haha yea
[22:19] <Bozza> IP over Ethernet? Is there a pure Ethernet?
[22:19] <sney> the config file is /etc/network/interfaces, you can get the syntax by reading 'man 5 interfaces'. this is the best option if it's only ever going to have 1 address.
[22:19] <Bozza> I have no clue to the difference
[22:19] <sney> ethernet is a layer 2 networking protocol. it's separate from ip and has its own addresses and parameters and things
[22:19] <sney> ip typically runs over ethernet though that's not the only option
[22:20] <Bozza> Sney is there a good UI? It should be getting an ip from dhcp . But it isn't .. Maybe it is conflicting with my wifi card
[22:20] <andreiiar> I use ip program http://linux.die.net/man/8/ip. Never got the ifconfig one
[22:20] <sney> Bozza: that config file is what tells your interface whether it'll use dhcp or a static ip.
[22:21] <sney> if your pi is going to be mobile, you may be better off with a networking daemon like wicd
