[0:52] * ponA (4e2b2036@gateway/web/freenode/ip.78.43.32.54) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:52] <ponA> hi
[0:54] <ponA> this question may seem a bit dumb, but is there a standard folder where you can put video files on the pi?
[0:55] <ponA> i mean like with windows' "my videos" folder
[0:55] <sney> you can make a Videos folder in your home directory
[0:56] * DataLinkDroid (~DataLinkD@1.147.56.37) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:57] <ponA> do you mean in /home/ or in /home/pi ?
[0:58] <Phase> is pi your username? (not familiar with the default setup) then yes /home/pi
[0:58] <ponA> that whole directory thing bugs me a little :) it is quite different from windows
[0:58] <Phase> in the terminal ~/ expands to /home/<current user>, so you could do cd ~/ and then mkdir Videos or mkdir ~/Videos
[0:58] * Geniack (~Geniack@unaffiliated/geniack) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[0:58] <Phase> or mkdir /home/pi/Videos would work just as well
[0:58] <sney> windows adopted a similar thing in vista and newer with the c:\users structure
[1:00] * ruif13 (~ruif13@a79-168-203-125.cpe.netcabo.pt) Quit (Quit: ruifigueiredo.me)
[1:00] * npt (~npt@dsl.comtrol.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[1:01] * hyperair (~hyperair@ubuntu/member/hyperair) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:01] <ponA> i know, that makes it a bit easier to follow. anyway you really have to get to know the whole symbolic link system of linux (arent they symbolic links?) and being able to mount makes it not easier to learn
[1:01] <ponA> will other users see the videos i stored in /home/pi/videos ?
[1:02] * Vialas (~Vialas@202.90.207.12) Quit (Quit: Textual IRC Client: www.textualapp.com)
[1:03] <sney> ponA: not by default
[1:03] <ponA> okay, wont be a problem, as currently pi is the only user
[1:03] <ponA> apart from root, i mean
[1:03] <Phase> /home/pi/videos and /home/pi/Videos are two different directories too, fyi
[1:03] <Phase> case sensitive
[1:04] * trisi (~trisi@63-140-87-92.nwc.dsl.dynamic.acsalaska.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
[1:04] <ponA> thx, i know, i am just a little sloppy in here
[1:05] <ponA> in the terminal i mostly do it right :D
[1:06] <sney> you can mount disks in directories in windows too. it's not as well known though
[1:07] <ponA> i know that too :) but doing so doesnt seem as common as in linux
[1:07] <sney> yeah
[1:08] * leandroa (~leandroa@181.164.177.179) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:09] <ponA> i stumbled over it for windows only once as i was searching for truecrypt volumes, but since i have the pi i seem to find that just everywhere
[1:11] * tombrough (~tom@cpc4-newt3-0-0-cust54.newt.cable.virginm.net) has left #raspberrypi
[1:11] <ponA> now i have another question: why does it take so long to move files to the pi via ftp? i only transfer with about 2MiB/s, that is half as fast as my internet connection...
[1:11] * Noodlewitt (~Noodlewit@r49-3-0-137.cpe.vividwireless.net.au) has left #raspberrypi
[1:13] * [Saint] (~saint@rockbox/user/saint) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:13] <ponA> the SD card i use can be written with at least 10MB/s, also 100Mbit/s LAN connection should not be a problem
[1:14] * a7x (~found@unaffiliated/a7x) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[1:14] <ponA> is the SD interface of the pi so slow?
[1:14] * crapp (~crapp@unaffiliated/saedelaere) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:14] * crapp (~crapp@unaffiliated/saedelaere) Quit ()
[1:15] <sney> ponA: everything on the Pi passes over a single usb 2.0 bus
[1:15] * jaytk (~jaytk@108-232-157-80.lightspeed.tukrga.sbcglobal.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:16] * trisi (~trisi@63-140-87-92.nwc.dsl.dynamic.acsalaska.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:16] * kirin` (telex@gateway/shell/anapnea.net/x-vqglgeyfhdlaycld) Quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[1:16] <pksato> ponA: test with http://freecode.com/projects/netio
[1:16] <J_Rey> The RPi Foundation is paying for Wayland/Weston driver to be written so we'll have full acceleration support
[1:17] <sney> that's cool.
[1:17] <sney> wish it was open
[1:17] <J_Rey> supposedly a "couple of months away"
[1:17] <J_Rey> http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=449517#p449517
[1:17] <[Saint]> It is...but, damn I wish it was for an open platform.
[1:17] <[Saint]> It seems like such a win, until...it kinda isn't.
[1:17] <J_Rey> according to the Broadcom guy who said that GPU's usually aren't open
[1:18] <sney> that's kind of a poop excuse
[1:18] <[Saint]> A huge one.
[1:18] <sney> "we don't have to share because those guys didn't either"
[1:18] <[Saint]> ^ this
[1:18] <[Saint]> "but...but...but...money!"
[1:18] <sney> AMD, to their credit, open things up albeit slowly and not entirely
[1:18] <sney> but it's a lot better than this AND they contribute
[1:18] <[Saint]> Indeedy.
[1:19] <sney> actually, "most" gpus *are* open
[1:19] * Vibe (~Vibe@gateway/tor-sasl/vib3) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[1:19] <sney> because Intel still eats almost all of the market share
[1:19] <[Saint]> And we get a nasty open souce shim to a closed souce binary.
[1:19] <sney> and you don't need firmware for intel gpus.
[1:19] * jaytk (~jaytk@108-232-157-80.lightspeed.tukrga.sbcglobal.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
[1:20] * Bane^ (~Bane@fsf/member/bane) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[1:20] <[Saint]> I laughed how excited people got when there were rumors of Broadcomm opening up the videocore binary.
[1:20] * Vibe (~Vibe@gateway/tor-sasl/vib3) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:20] <[Saint]> And, although what we got is still cool - its quite far from an open driver.
[1:20] * trisi (~trisi@63-140-87-92.nwc.dsl.dynamic.acsalaska.net) Quit (Client Quit)
[1:21] <J_Rey> here's a sample video of what we could get used to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HItv4HX5r3k
[1:21] * DataLinkDroid (~DataLinkD@1.147.56.37) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[1:21] <[Saint]> We've seen it, thanks. :)
[1:21] <[Saint]> You know you can /already/ use Wayland/Weston on the pi to some extent, yes?
[1:22] <J_Rey> As of earlier today, yes
[1:22] <[Saint]> As of weeks and weeks ago...yes.
[1:22] <[Saint]> +and weeks
[1:23] * DataLinkDroid (~DataLinkD@1.147.56.37) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:23] <J_Rey> I wish someone would update http://qt-project.org/wiki/RaspberryPi though
[1:23] <Triffid_Hunter> [Saint]: it's steps in the right direction.. few years ago, broadcom was almost hostile towards open source
[1:23] * Bane^ (~Bane@fsf/member/bane) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:24] <sney> "almost
[1:24] <[Saint]> Triffid_Hunter: I would say they still are.
[1:25] <J_Rey> yeah the Pi is pushing their paradigm, I'm sure
[1:25] <J_Rey> over 1 million of anything will get attention
[1:25] <sney> especially for their NICs. though that may be because the driver is doing all of the work and the nic itself is just a phy, in which case anyone who has the source to the broadcom driver knows how to copy the nic
[1:26] <[Saint]> WHen the raspberry pi first came out, they were already getting a LOT of grief in the ANdroid community - and, as soon as the pi came out they started pretending to pay attention to our requests (at least in the forums I frequent), this was exciting.
[1:26] <sney> but that's their own fault for being cheap, too
[1:26] <[Saint]> ...it tapered off within a fornight, with the only contribution we got being a binary compiled for the wrong arch.
[1:26] <[Saint]> Every developer assigned to our case ended up leaving within a fortnight.
[1:27] <[Saint]> They certainly did a great job of pretending to care for a while.
[1:27] <[Saint]> But its back to square one again.
[1:28] * Mr_P (~gerhard@chello080108255018.3.14.vie.surfer.at) Quit (Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
[1:29] <[Saint]> We even made it very clear that we didn't care if they opened the sources or not, as we understood this just wasn't going to happen. Instead, all we asked for was a precompiled arch appropriate binary...and it took about 12 weeks to get a binary compiled for the wrong arch, and then all requests were back to being ignored.
[1:29] * Phosie (~androirc@unaffiliated/phosie) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:29] <[Saint]> The thing that made it terrible was the precompiled binary was /their/ solution, their offer.
[1:29] * hyperair (~hyperair@ubuntu/member/hyperair) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[1:30] <Triffid_Hunter> I'm frankly baffled that rpi foundation went with broadcom in the first place.. it's not like broadcom's stance has been unclear in the past
[1:30] <[Saint]> Thankfully, pretty much no one cares about these Android devices any more - they're landfill now.
[1:30] <Triffid_Hunter> there's other arm soc vendors which are friendlier to open source, surely?
[1:30] <[Saint]> Triffid_Hunter: price point.
[1:30] <J_Rey> you assume we know but who is "we"?
[1:31] * rodmacpherson (~Rod@108.161.118.80) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[1:31] * Turingi (~devon@unaffiliated/devon-hillard/x-7250961) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[1:32] * vernunft (~vernunft@209.222.18.27) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:32] <[Saint]> "we" == "damn near every CyanogenMod contributor unlucky enough to have Broadcomm tech in their chosen port"
[1:32] * thebeagle (~thebeagle@147.126.81.6) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:33] <[Saint]> There's at least a dozen ports out there that are basically finished, save for the want of binaries Broadcomm could compile it a heartbeat.
[1:34] * christo_m (~christo@135.23.48.17) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[1:34] <[Saint]> But, yeah, Triffid_Hunter - the raspi is a very fine balance of selections between functionality and price point.
[1:35] <[Saint]> They really did amazingly well, considering.
[1:35] * christo_m (~christo@135-23-48-17.cpe.pppoe.ca) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:36] <J_Rey> ahh... I gotcha
[1:37] * pwillard (~pwillard@adsl-98-66-197-207.asm.bellsouth.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[1:38] <[Saint]> The cynic in me wants to say its part of planned obsolescence.
[1:39] <[Saint]> Its harder to sell SoCs if hackers are putting bleeding edge Android in ancient ARMv6 entry level devices and keeping them useful, I guess.
[1:39] <[Saint]> It makes economic sense to not support such a community.
[1:39] <sney> only in the short term, though
[1:40] <[Saint]> Indeed.
[1:40] <sney> people still like the shiny new stuff, and a big community of modders can be a huge boon to any piece of technology
[1:41] <[Saint]> Right - but the people hacking shiny new code onto older devices aren't /usually/ going to be buyinmg shiny new tech.
[1:41] * [Saint] looks at his 5 year old Samsung running bleeding edge Cm 10.2
[1:41] <sney> they still buy it, just not as often
[1:41] <[Saint]> Samsung *ARMv6*, even. :)
[1:41] * felipealmeida (~user@177.98.97.217) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[1:42] <[Saint]> 160MB ROM, 268MB RAM...she's a beast, lol. :)
[1:42] <[Saint]> Still runs CM 10.2 in a fashion that makes it usable as a daily-driver, though. Its my "deon't care if it dies in a fire work phone"
[1:43] <sney> nod
[1:43] <[Saint]> And it has an impressive accidental safety feature.
[1:43] * nid0 hugs his 2007 E90
[1:43] <[Saint]> If you drop it, instead of breaking, it explodes into "safety pieces" hehe. :P
[1:43] <sney> samsung from that era is probably the one that explodes to absorb the shock when you drop. .. yes
[1:43] <[Saint]> hahahaha
[1:43] <[Saint]> snap.
[1:43] <sney> I had one with a keyboard
[1:44] <sney> sold it to my boss for 50 bucks.
[1:44] <[Saint]> this is a GT-I5503T
[1:44] <[Saint]> (Europa variant)
[1:44] <[Saint]> or "Galaxy 5"
[1:44] * Gwayne (~Gwayne@opensuse/member/gwayne) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:44] <[Saint]> ..though like 10 devices are under that name.
[1:45] <[Saint]> My /actual/ phone is a SGS 4, loves it.
[1:45] <[Saint]> loves loves loves.
[1:45] <nid0> interesting different takes from different manufactures, im fairly sure if I dropped my E90 (nokia) it'd just smash the floor
[1:45] <[Saint]> Samsung always went with cheap plastic skins.
[1:45] <[Saint]> Even in their high end devices.
[1:46] <[Saint]> Made them feel cheap, but made them virtually indestructable.
[1:46] * jaytk (~jaytk@108-232-157-80.lightspeed.tukrga.sbcglobal.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:46] * Phosie is now known as Phosie|away
[1:46] <[Saint]> back cover and the battery popping out absorbs and deflects most of the impact.
[1:46] * jaytk (~jaytk@108-232-157-80.lightspeed.tukrga.sbcglobal.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[1:46] <[Saint]> Likely completely unintentional, but very cool.
[1:46] <chithead> the rumor that nokia phones are indestructible has been put to test, by answering the question "will it blend?" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Sbizs-qAwY
[1:47] <[Saint]> They do. Everything does. :)
[1:47] <nid0> I reckon he cheated.

[1:48] <[Saint]> http://mobile.softpedia.com/phones/Alcatel/Alcatel-One-Touch-Easy.shtml <-- my first phone
[1:49] <[Saint]> Eat it.
[1:49] <[Saint]> Eat the ugly.
[1:49] <[Saint]> *s/fat/fart/
[1:49] <nid0> mine was a 3210
[1:49] <nid0> along with most of the rest of the world \o/
[1:49] <[Saint]> It was great! You could bludgeon someone to death with this thing in a pinch.
[1:50] <[Saint]> Or use it as a boat to row to safety.
[1:50] <[Saint]> And it took AAA batteries! :)
[1:50] * jaytk_ (~jaytk@108-232-157-80.lightspeed.tukrga.sbcglobal.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:51] <[Saint]> Not many phones are suitable as both telephony devices and melee weapons.
[1:51] <ponA> after i copied a mkv file to the raspberry pi, i tried opening it with XBMC, but it does not seem to open with the standard OMXPlayer. Do i have to install another player to open it?

[1:52] <nid0> [Saint]: thats how I always felt with my E90, a phone, awesome email device, and baseball bat all rolled into one
[1:52] <ponA> haha saint, that made me think of the motorolla razor
[1:52] <steve_rox> they dont make good weapons these days
[1:52] <[Saint]> Ahhh, the *first* Razor.
[1:52] <[Saint]> Before the remake...heh.
[1:52] <steve_rox> unless you use the lipo as a flame thrower maybe
[1:53] <[Saint]> steve_rox: I was just going to suggest that, but deliberately crafting overvoltage scenarios and disabling the safeties would be rather demanding in a pinch I guess.
[1:54] <[Saint]> Unless you were MacGuyver.
[1:54] * Megaf (~Megaf@unaffiliated/megaf) has joined #raspberrypi

[2:39] <undecim> I have no idea if this is the 5v or 3.3v....
[2:40] <shiftplusone> chances are that the 5v one will work on 3.3v logic, but you have to be careful not to read from it.
[2:40] <undecim> alright
[2:40] <undecim> I'll be sure to read over those. Ty
[2:41] <shiftplusone> Normally there is a 'busy flag' which you use. You tell the display to do something, then wait until it says it's not busy. A proper datasheet for the controller will have maximum times each operation takes, so instead of reading the busy flag, you might have to use delays.
[2:41] <shiftplusone> I am not 100% sure about this though, so maybe wait around for gordonDrogon to show up
[2:41] <shiftplusone> I am also confused about input voltage being 3.3v and datasheet saying that the lcd driving voltage can't be below 4.3v at 25C.
[2:44] <shiftplusone> The 3.3v version might have an on-board boost converter or something =/
[2:44] <undecim> Also, I'm having a problem with my USB block eruptors. Every so often, they will disappear. The hub shows up in lsusb, but not the devices.
[2:44] <undecim> The only way to get them back is with a reboot
[2:44] <shiftplusone> Well, for the 2 cents per month you're making with it, may as well forget it >_<
[2:45] <undecim> shiftplusone: I'm making ~2 cents per hour
[2:45] <shiftplusone> ooh
[2:45] <undecim> minus, electricity
[2:45] <undecim> but I get 7c/kWh here
[2:46] <shiftplusone> but yeah, I have no idea why it might disappear. Anything in dmesg?
[2:47] <undecim> I get this when I plug back in (power first, then usb) http://www.fpaste.org/52269/78882513/
[2:47] <shiftplusone> hm =/
[2:48] <undecim> hub is ID 03eb:0902 Atmel Corp. 4-Port Hub (its actually 7 ports)
[2:48] <shiftplusone> if you unplug the whole hub and plug it back in, you get the same messages?
[2:48] <undecim> It's one of those cheap "squid" hubs
[2:48] <undecim> yeah, that's what I did.

[10:35] <gregtom6> I see

[10:41] <gregtom6> oh, yes, I remember that
[10:41] <shiftplusone> yeah, it should be there
[10:41] <shiftplusone> you may run into some issues due to mono not having hard float support (last time I checked), but you can work around that.

[10:47] <clever> that will likely mess it up more
[10:47] <shiftplusone> no, I am not doing anything of the sort. It's just that when such an image is launched in qemu, you have to run fsck from within qemu.
[10:48] <shiftplusone> because on that first boot, qemu thinks it's 1970 and the image was mounted too far into the future, so it refuses to boot it. I guess that's not an issue on a real pi.

[10:52] <clever> shiftplusone: on a real pi, it sets the date/time to /etc/fake-hwclock.data at bootup
[10:52] <shiftplusone> it should do the same thing in qemu
[10:52] <shiftplusone> and subsequent boots work fine, it's just that first boot, before fake hwclock is set that messes up
[10:53] <clever> on my .img, thats set to sept 25th

[10:53] <shiftplusone> that's the latest image and the one I am using as well.

[10:56] <shiftplusone> looks like it doesn't do that anymore
[10:56] <clever> i was wondering
[10:56] <clever> because it cant read /etc/fake-hwclock.data until after it mounts
[10:57] <clever> so it must be able to mount it with 1970 date
[10:57] <clever> then fixes the clock afterwards
[10:57] <shiftplusone> well, that explains why it boots fine on the pi as well. I guess the old image checked the filesystem before setting the clock
[10:57] <clever> the problem might be /etc/init.d/fsck running before fake-hwclock, or you had a image without fake-hwclock

[11:02] <clever> as for making it work, that was tricky
[11:02] <shiftplusone> makes sense
[11:02] <clever> step 1, enable this driver in the kernel: ./drivers/input/keyboard/mpr121_touchkey.c
[11:02] <clever> step 2, write a custom driver, which will spawn an instance of the above, and pass it a list of keycodes for each element
[11:02] <clever> also, there is a bug in the i2c driver in rpi, it cant read past address 0
[11:03] <clever> so only the first 8 elements (of 12) work

[12:48] <shiftplusone> yes, but do you have a reason to be running rpi-update in the first place?
[12:49] <Pitel_IPEX> to make the edge bleed :)
[12:49] <shiftplusone> are you using the 'next' tree?

[12:55] <shiftplusone> ah well... as long as you found the fix for your actual problem >.>

[21:48] <sney> it's also the basis for at least 2 of the media player distros

[21:55] <Nefarious___> I'll stick with the pi then ;)
[21:55] <sney> also, yeah, for a crossbuild toolchain you usually wind up having to compile gcc, which also takes forever

For example, in videoconferencing systems it is common to send I-frames very infrequently."

[22:56] <linuxstb> MProg: I would guess that can mean almost never. They are needed in broadcast streams so people can tune into the broadcast at any time, and are needed on DVDs etc for seeking. For video conferencing, you just need to send it at the start (assuming one-to-one video conferencing).
