[0:00] <qjsgkem> bbl, wanna document/photog that reader before taking it apart
[0:00] * dsirrine (dsirrine@nat/redhat/x-lrgxxugurlkymcxs) Quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
[0:01] <berryciderspider> is it the phone or the medium of transfer?
[0:01] * g_r_eek (~g_r_eek@176.92.124.225) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:02] <[Saint]> A high end device shouldn;t have any issues with it.
[0:02] <[Saint]> But it still may not be realtime.
[0:02] * FR^2 (~fr@farsquare.de) Quit (Quit: und weg...)
[0:03] <[Saint]> You can buy an LCD for the pi for a few bucks, really...like $10 USD or so.
[0:03] <[Saint]> Its worth checking out.
[0:03] <sney> yeah, the pi's ability limits it as well. I control mine's appearance by vnc and it's a bit sluggish even from a windows computer over a fast ethernet connection
[0:03] * DataLinkDroid (~DataLinkD@1.129.65.80) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[0:04] <[Saint]> Have a look around for "backup camera LCD".
[0:04] <berryciderspider> Saint: there is that ok screen coming out, but haven't been able to find any cheap ones
[0:04] <[Saint]> Little 7~10" VGA-input LCDs are hilariously cheap.
[0:04] * [SkG] (~sconde@unaffiliated/skg/x-897332) Quit (Quit: Saliendo)
[0:05] <[Saint]> berryciderspider: http://www.amazon.com/3-5-Inch-TFT-Monitor-Automobile/dp/B0045IIZKU/ref=sr_1_14?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1384988713&sr=1-14&keywords=7%22+reversing+camera+LCD
[0:06] <[Saint]> ~$20USD shipped
[0:07] <berryciderspider> and then just get hdmi converter?
[0:07] <[Saint]> ...why?
[0:07] <[Saint]> Its VGA.
[0:07] <berryciderspider> does pi support vga?
[0:07] <shiftplusone> no sir
[0:08] <[Saint]> Ahhhh, shit on it - composite, I mean.
[0:08] * [Saint] was kicked from #raspberrypi by sourcebot
[0:08] * [Saint] (~saint@rockbox/user/saint) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:08] <[Saint]> Whoops.
[0:08] <shiftplusone> ah, the bot works.
[0:08] * lupinedk is now known as Lupinedk
[0:08] <qjsgkem> shiftplusone: uh, oh...
[0:09] <sney> the machine uprising has begun!
[0:09] <qjsgkem> your nick is just one letter away from being kicked;
[0:10] <[Saint]> Heh, that link I gave even has an image of the raspberrypi functioning with this very screen.
[0:10] * teepee (~teepee@p508475DE.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[0:10] <[Saint]> And, yes, sorry - I VGA'ed when I should've composite'ed.
[0:10] * teepee (~teepee@p4FFFD5C8.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:10] * kairu (~zye@75.103.15.242) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:10] * gillzon (~oscar@213-65-30-133-no21.tbcn.telia.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[0:11] <[Saint]> The only thing you'd need to get in addition to that LCD is a 3.5mm stereo -> 2 RCA adapter
[0:11] <[Saint]> (if you wanted sound)
[0:11] * Dovid (~Dovid@static-173-63-105-210.nwrknj.fios.verizon.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[0:12] <[Saint]> But, shop around - they are much, much cheaper if you want to get more than one. And cheaper examples exist for single units as well.
[0:12] <berryciderspider> oh that's fine then, all I need is video.
[0:12] * g_r_eek (~g_r_eek@176.92.124.225) Quit (Read error: Operation timed out)
[0:12] <berryciderspider> cheaper than 20?
[0:13] * g_r_eek (~g_r_eek@46-137-51.adsl.cyta.gr) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:13] <[Saint]> I got a bunch for about $7 USD each (+ shipping) when I purchased 10 or more.
[0:13] <[Saint]> They were 7" LCDs.
[0:14] <berryciderspider> that's bloody cheap
[0:14] * busla (~busla@78-23-178-5.access.telenet.be) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:14] <berryciderspider> on amazon was it?
[0:15] <[Saint]> PriceSpy (which is sortof like a New Zealand specific Amazon-esque link aggregation service)
[0:15] * tpw_rules (~tpw_rules@li242-215.members.linode.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:15] <Syliss> nice
[0:16] <Syliss> whats the res?
[0:16] <[Saint]> 320x480 iirc.
[0:16] <[Saint]> Not terrible, not great.
[0:17] <berryciderspider> all I need. thanks Saint
[0:18] <[Saint]> Not a problem.
[0:19] * gbaman (~gbaman@host81-130-48-226.in-addr.btopenworld.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[0:19] <Syliss> for me that would be too low
[0:19] <[Saint]> I have something very much similar to this as well: http://www.amazon.com/FE01-BL-Wireless-Keyboard-Mouse-Touchpad/dp/B003UE52ME/ref=pd_sim_auto_1/179-8773617-5818119
[0:19] <tpw_rules> hi?
[0:19] <Syliss> id want at least 640x480 for 7"
[0:19] * troulouliou_dev (~troulouli@unaffiliated/troulouliou-dev/x-4757952) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:19] <[Saint]> Not quite exactly the same, but close enough for me to suspect that its based off the same generic board.
[0:19] <Syliss> but i use a motorola lap dock with my pi
[0:20] <[Saint]> That's the only thing they're good for these days. ;)
[0:20] <Syliss> oh there is a lot of good uses, it just depends on the user
[0:20] <Syliss> I'm thinking of getting an android stick and using it for hd playback
[0:20] * timmmaaaayyy (~timmmaaaa@207.224.126.188) Quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
[0:21] <Syliss> i just wish the chrome cast did more
[0:22] <tpw_rules> the rpi will do dhcp, right?
[0:22] <Vostok> yes
[0:22] <shiftplusone> tpw_rules, yup
[0:22] <tpw_rules> ah, just took a while
[0:23] <tpw_rules> what about getting rid of overscan, can't seem to make that work
[0:24] <tpw_rules> disable_overscan=1 was not useful
[0:24] <tpw_rules> or successful
[0:25] <[Saint]> You probably also need to adjust the windowing.
[0:25] <tpw_rules> could you explain how to do that please?
[0:26] <[Saint]> the "overscan_*" values in config.txt
[0:26] <[Saint]> You'll know what needs adjusting by looking at the screen and seeing which side(s) still have a black border.
[0:27] <[Saint]> adjust the corresponding overscan values until you no longer have said border.
[0:27] <[Saint]> In my case, I nly need to adjust the left/right params.
[0:27] <tpw_rules> how can i force x to update? reboot only>?
[0:27] * DataLinkDroid (~DataLinkD@1.129.65.80) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:28] * katakefalos (~katakefal@46-198-65-96.adsl.cyta.gr) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:28] <clever> [Saint]: the config.txt changes only take effect on reboot, thats completely seperate from X
[0:29] <clever> oops, tpw_rules
[0:29] <tpw_rules> ah, ok
[0:29] <[Saint]> clever: ...I...I know?
[0:29] <tpw_rules> currently trying to nuke an external drive with parted
[0:30] * g_r_eek (~g_r_eek@46-137-51.adsl.cyta.gr) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[0:30] * kairu (~zye@75.103.15.242) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:31] <tpw_rules> oh eeenteresting, it seems like it won't let me go too far over
[0:31] <tpw_rules> now my pixels are all nice and sharp
[0:31] <tpw_rules> btw, what package should i install to start compiling things?
[0:32] <[Saint]> that's amazingly vague.
[0:32] <tpw_rules> thanks. like libc and gcc and make etc
[0:32] <tpw_rules> on ubuntu, there is a metapackage which installs all those relevant tools
[0:33] <clever> build-essentials i think it was called
[0:33] <[Saint]> build-essential is likely a good start, but, there's definitely no "one-package-fits-all case here.
[0:33] <tpw_rules> yeeah, that sounds like it. thanks
[0:33] <[Saint]> It absolutely depends on *what* you want to compile.
[0:33] <shiftplusone> clever, are you a gentoo dev, or do I have you mixed up with someone?
[0:33] <clever> shiftplusone: yep, gentoo
[0:34] * Hydroxygen (~red@unaffiliated/zor/x-4290728) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:34] <shiftplusone> clever, are you familiar with ambro's cross overlay?
[0:34] <clever> nope, but i have used crossdev to compile to the pi
[0:35] <clever> shiftplusone: i think it was just a matter of running 'crossdev arm-linux-gnueabi' and thats it
[0:36] <shiftplusone> clever, I am having a bit of an issue. As I understand it python bootstraps off the host toolchain, but its ebuild and crossdev use the CFLAGS given in the make conf and since the host toolchain does not recognise those options it all comes to a grinding halt.
[0:36] * kairu (~zye@75.103.15.242) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[0:36] <clever> shiftplusone: ah, trying to cross compile python?
[0:37] <shiftplusone> clever, ambro has an overlay with a fix, but it seems to have been abandoned in januray, so the new version of python has this problem. I am trying to apply his changes, but I am failing at is, since I am new to ebuilds and such.
[0:37] * Sedorox (~Sedorox@smartserv/cna/Sedorox) Quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[0:37] <clever> i havent tried to cross compile python
[0:37] <clever> the python on my py seems to work just fine, si i never had to
[0:37] * Sedorox (~Sedorox@smartserv/cna/Sedorox) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:37] <shiftplusone> well, I am just going for a stage 3 sysroot and python is just where it fails
[0:37] * tombrough (~tom@cpc4-newt3-0-0-cust54.newt.cable.virginm.net) has left #raspberrypi
[0:38] <clever> x86 stage3 on x86 host?
[0:38] <shiftplusone> arm stage3
[0:39] <clever> with qemu userspace?
[0:39] <shiftplusone> not yet, no.
[0:39] <clever> the arm binaries wont run at all without it
[0:39] <clever> and its probly using the wrong make.conf
[0:39] <clever> one sec
[0:39] <shiftplusone> I don't intend to run them on the pc
[0:40] <shiftplusone> the make.conf is fine.
[0:40] <clever> shiftplusone: run 'man emerge' and look for ROOT and PORTAGE_CONFIGROOT
[0:40] <shiftplusone> yeah, that's all good.
[0:40] <clever> ah
[0:40] <clever> ive not tried cross-compiling python like that before
[0:41] <shiftplusone> Might have to poke nerdboy, but I haven't been able to get a hold of him
[0:41] <clever> ive only used those options between 2 x86 images before
[0:41] * nestea (~quassel@chello084115136002.3.graz.surfer.at) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:41] <clever> all i can sudjust is to chroot into it
[0:41] <shiftplusone> that's cheating
[0:41] <shiftplusone> but I may have to
[0:41] <clever> https://github.com/cleverca22/crosspiroot
[0:42] <shiftplusone> I don't need your scripts >=/ I've got my own =D
[0:42] <clever> but now youve given me the idea to try using those options to make a gentoo pi image
[0:42] <clever> let me finish hacking the hello_video app first
[0:43] * chandoo (~chandoo@ool-44c4d8d3.dyn.optonline.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[0:43] <clever> so, is the clock optional...

[2:26] <clever> shiftplusone: still there?
[2:27] * S0-2 (~sgra@unaffiliated/sgra) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:27] <shiftplusone> clever, yeah
[2:28] <clever> shiftplusone: i just noticed, one of my ideas to turn the pi into a media server might be relatively simple
[2:28] <clever> shiftplusone: the video_decode module in omx outputs raw video frames, and i think video_encode takes them in
[2:28] <clever> in theory, i can just plug video_decode into video_encode, and transcode h264->mpeg2 in realtime

[3:55] <shiftplusone> not plugging an ethernet cable is easy enough, but 'course you can configure interfaces so that it doesn't connect.

[11:38] <shiftplusone> clever, mate, I really don't know what any of that means, heh. >_<
[11:39] <clever> it means i can almost make it work the same as omxplayer

[11:46] <Ben64> anyway, it would be nice if omxplayer was more like mplayer
[11:47] <clever> Ben64: i was thinking it would be better if mplayer just had gpu support

[11:48] <Ben64> i don't really know much about hardware decoding and stuff, but shouldn't it be fairly easy?
[11:48] <clever> Ben64: kinda
[11:48] <Ben64> i'm guessing its similar to vdpau
[11:48] <shiftplusone> From what I gather, omx is witchcraft
[11:48] <clever> with the hello_video demo, you just give it the raw video track, directly from the container
[11:48] <Ben64> oh
[11:49] <clever> for example, i can run mkvextract on an mkv file
[11:49] <clever> and it plays that track perfectly with the demo app
[11:49] <Ben64> interesting
[11:49] <clever> however, mplayer/ffmpeg doesnt give that raw track
[11:49] <clever> and i havent even started looking into how av sync works
[11:49] <Ben64> mplayer -vo blah blah?
[11:50] <clever> omx has its own sync tools, and expects to manage both audio and video

[11:54] <Ben64> can't just provide your own header?
[11:54] <clever> Ben64: i copied that header to a file, and modified it to use that file directly
[11:55] <clever> Ben64: it works perfectly, for a single video, but goes horribly wrong for any other video
[11:55] <Ben64> ah\
[11:55] <clever> so i have to pre-exact it for every video
[11:55] <clever> Vialas: from what i understand, you feed a raw file directly into read_media, and pipe that into video_decode->video_scheduler->video_render
[11:56] <Ben64> so how does omxplayer keep stuff in sync if its just sending the video to the chip raw?
[11:56] <clever> pipe the audio into audio_decode->audio_render and something else
[11:56] <clever> Ben64: omx has proper support to play and sync both the audio and video, fully on its own
[11:56] <clever> i suspect you could shove a raw mp4 file directly into the gpu and it just work
[11:57] <Ben64> oh
[11:57] <Ben64> might be easier to modify omxplayer then?

[12:00] <Vialas> right :S
[12:00] <clever> video_render takes video frames in, and draws them on the hdmi output
[12:00] <clever> plug the 2 together, feed it video, and you have a video player

[12:04] <clever> Ben64: at the cost of a large chunk of performance, i could maybe even get all mplayer video filters to work
[12:04] <Ben64> ooh
[12:04] <clever> the video_decode module returns full video frames
[12:05] <clever> right now, its connected directly to video_render
[12:05] <clever> but if i disconnect those, and pipe the video thru mplayer properly, mplayer is free to do whatever it wants with the data
[12:05] <clever> but then your copying 1080 images from the gpu->arm->cpu, at 30 fps
[12:05] <clever> gpu->arm->gpu i mean
[12:06] <Ben64> arm is pretty damn slow
[12:06] <clever> yeah, i dont know if it would handle that yet
[12:06] <clever> let me do some quick math...
[12:07] <clever> a 1080p image has ~2 million pixels in it
[12:07] <clever> at 30 fps, thats 62 million pixels per second
[12:07] <clever> and lets say 3 bytes per pixel, just a guess
[12:07] <clever> 186mbyte/second
[12:07] <clever> in both directions

[12:09] <shiftplusone> What sort of speeds can you get with DMA?

[12:09] <clever> https://github.com/simonjhall/copies-and-fills
[12:09] <clever> Speeds of up to 1390 MB/s have been achieved. This is ~7x faster than the libc version.
[12:10] <clever> thats using the gpu assisted memcpy functions
[12:10] <clever> so 186mb/sec for 1080p is feasible
[12:10] <shiftplusone> well, it should be already using it if you're running raspbian
[12:10] <clever> was just using that as a speed reference
[12:10] <shiftplusone> (and the memcpy functions, since it's preloaded)
[12:11] <clever> if the pi can do 1390mb/sec with memcpy, then it can probly share data to/from the gpu at similar speeds
[12:12] <clever> it would simply be a matter of redoing my patch to seperate decode and render
[12:12] <shiftplusone> you can't use the same memcpy functions?
[12:12] <shiftplusone> (directly I mean)
[12:12] <clever> i have no clue how the data is actualy reaching me
[12:12] <shiftplusone> ah ok
[12:12] <clever> i call the ilclient function, and it gives me a char* and an int
[12:12] <clever> i call another function, and it disapears down the rabbit hole

[12:14] <ShorTie> darn rabbits
[12:14] <clever> ShorTie: i can follow it some of the way, by editing the userland source and/or kernel source

I set RasPlex up yesterday, and movies were stuttering a bit. Didn't yet have time to look deeper into the issue - so I just want to know if anybody had a similar problem
