[0:08] <karl-s> Sonny_Jim, can you elaborate on 'face recognition' ? does it actuall detect 'your' face and nobody else's?
[0:08] <Sonny_Jim> Nah
[0:08] <karl-s> just faces in general?
[0:09] <Sonny_Jim> Sure
[0:09] <Sonny_Jim> You can 'train' it though
[0:09] <Sonny_Jim> But I wouldn't use it as a password, maybe as a login if that makes sense
[0:09] <karl-s> dang, i just had a great idea for a home security system
[0:09] <Sonny_Jim> Biometrics aren't great for passwords
[0:09] <karl-s> but then criminals would run around wearings masks of me
[0:09] <Sonny_Jim> Security = something you have and something only you know
[0:10] <Sonny_Jim> So username/password
[0:10] <Sonny_Jim> Biometrics only provide the username part
[0:10] <karl-s> yea, i would use it as a two factor auth thingy
[0:10] <Sonny_Jim> So finger swipe plus code = better than code alone
[0:10] <Sonny_Jim> Finger swipe only = heading for pain
[0:12] <karl-s> huh, looks like it does exist

[0:12] <Sonny_Jim> It's because people don't understand basic security

[1:09] <kevin> hey guys. soooo, i keep having issues with my sdcard (i guess that's the issue), where it becomes corrupted. i thought mounting all partitions as read-only (and having /home be a usb-mounted device) would solve it, but it seems that i still have corruption issues. any solutions / ideas? using xbian distro, so there really isnt a 'power off' option, so i usually just unplug it. thought that'd be okay since sdcard parititons were rea
[1:09] <kevin> d-only
[1:11] <shiftplusone> not an sd card issue, unplugging it is almost guaranteed to corrupt the SD card. I haven't used XBian, but I doubt that that it doesn't let you power down properly.
[1:11] <sney> once the corruption happens it can't just be undone
[1:11] * h[a]kr is now known as hakr
[1:11] <kevin> when i go to 'shutdown', it ends up just rebooting

[1:27] <ShadowJK> I've had rpi survive unexpected power outages
[1:27] * KindOne (KindOne@colchester-lug/silly-fool/donut) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[1:27] <ShadowJK> but it has a sandisk android edition uSD in it
[1:28] <ShadowJK> not some cheap card
[1:28] * tombrough (~tom@cpc4-newt3-0-0-cust54.newt.cable.virginm.net) has left #raspberrypi
[1:29] <shiftplusone> my kingston cards (which are supposed to be terrible) work just fine if I yank the power out as well, but it's not exactly best practice.
[1:29] <ShorTie> mine has gone thru countless power outages and still works ok
[1:29] <Sonny_Jim> Cool
[1:29] <plugwash> same here
[1:29] * KindOne (KindOne@colchester-lug/silly-fool/donut) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:30] <ShadowJK> Considering kingston rebrands random cards, you're bound to get good ones too :-)
[1:30] <Sonny_Jim> Going to have another crack tomorrow, but OpenCV sure is fun :-)
[1:30] <ShorTie> that is why it is more if it has files open that cause corruption i believe
[1:30] <plugwash> some subset of people seem to have big problems with SD card corruption but I dunno what if anything the common thread between them is
[1:30] <ShadowJK> yeah :/
[1:31] <shiftplusone> I have been following the various sd corruptions threads and I have not been able to spot any common thread at all.
[1:31] <ShadowJK> oh, one thing I've noticed elsewhere, fsck on ext* on a functioning fs on flash is going to make things worse

[1:34] <kevin> ive had several sdcards (like 4 or 5..?) go corrupt, *shrug*
[1:35] <shiftplusone> Check the power supply, make sure you're not overclocking, make sure your sd card slot contacts and clean and make good contact with the card.
[1:35] <shiftplusone> and you could also try newer firmware

[1:45] * zproc (~zproc@laf31-6-82-241-3-109.fbx.proxad.net) Quit (Quit: zproc)
[1:48] <kevin> yeah, all of that's good. maybe firmware could be updated. haven't done that, and i got it around may 2012.
[1:49] <ShorTie> the firmware is on the sdcard
[1:49] <shiftplusone> keep in mind that if you run rpi-update, you have the chance of making things worse.
[1:49] <kevin> oh, hmm
[1:50] <kevin> this is gonna sound total newb because can't really phrase this correctly: is there a way to uhh, boot completely then allow the sdcard to be unmounted? say i only have /boot on sdcard and / on the usb, couldn't /boot be unmounted after booting?
[1:50] <kevin> then the sdcard would have no mounted file systems
[1:50] <shiftplusone> yes
[1:50] <shiftplusone> you can run completely off USB, you only need the SD card to boot the firmware and kernel.
[1:51] * chris_99 (~chris_99@unaffiliated/chris-99/x-3062929) Quit (Quit: Leaving)

[2:14] <happygilmoregent> can you run pi on a 13.8 V system?
[2:15] <Triffid_Hunter> happygilmoregent: you can convert 13.8v to 5v that the pi will be happy with, search 'LM2596' on ebay
[2:15] <happygilmoregent> aka a car batter
[2:15] * higuita (~higuita@2001:b18:400f:0:495:fa0c:31f8:ec84) Quit (Quit: WeeChat 0.4.2)

[2:20] <Triffid_Hunter> so wouldn't be suitable for a pi

[3:24] <shiftplusone> nope
[3:24] <kevin> hah

[5:26] <shiftplusone> Got some different power supplies and cables to try?
[5:26] <Triffid_Hunter> fslima0: usually that's caused by a poor quality power supply
[5:26] <Triffid_Hunter> I run mine from a 2.5A tablet charger, it's rock solid
[5:27] <steve_rox> i need to mod mine so it does not reboot on usb insert
