[0:00] <rikkib> then you can run user space spi
[0:01] <rikkib> there is also the method of setting the actual dev owner on boot creation
[0:03] <yedderson> I see this http://pastebin.mozilla.org/4291767 I guess It's not working
[0:03] <rikkib> But the real power of Linux is the fact you can write root daemons and tcp/ip
[0:03] * ryanteck (~ryan@fsf/member/Ryanteck) Quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[0:04] * [SkG] (~sconde@unaffiliated/skg/x-897332) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)

[4:37] <[Saint]> iw is a standard tool, so, yes.

[4:38] <[Saint]> Of course it is.
[4:39] <[Saint]> Its your environment that isn;t, apparently. :)
[4:40] <[Saint]> About 17 bajillion people have had this problem and solved it already, a nicely formatted search string will work wonders for you.
[4:41] <[Saint]> "<my_wireless_device's_model> arch raspberrypi"
[4:42] <JesusRifle> just guessing it isnt due to this line from the arch wiki " If iw does not work with your card, you can try the deprecated wireless_tools."

[7:26] <chocoporter> Hi guys. I have a quick question: When I first receive a rpi with raspbian sd card, if I check its IP using my router will I be able to SSH on first boot? Or do I need to configure something on the SD first?

[7:27] <[Saint]> sshd is enabled by default on the major distros, yes.
[7:27] <[Saint]> (and by major, I personally only mean Raspbian and Arch)
[7:27] <chocoporter> Cool, ty.
[7:27] <rahul_> Hii i want to connect to a wifi network with my Rpi
[7:27] <chocoporter> So in theory I can ssh to it and use my pi headless from day 1?
[7:27] <rahul_> How to connect
[7:27] <rahul_> ?
[7:28] <[Saint]> chocoporter: Correct.
[7:28] <chocoporter> Thank you
[7:29] <rahul_> I want to login remotely on my linux machine, I have wifi module connected and my laptop is also connected to wifi right now
[7:29] <rahul_> how could i access Rpi?

[7:34] <[Saint]> I'm not sure what else I could provide. Its fairly straightforward.
[7:35] <rahul_> But It is not connecting..

[11:52] <retrosenator> is it possible to configure a raspberry pi as a wifi repeater with a single wifi device?
[11:54] <ShorTie> not really i would think, kinda hard to send and recieve at the same time
[11:54] <shiftplusone> I thought hostpad can do it
[11:55] <[Saint]> Pretty sure.
[11:55] <shiftplusone> ah, looks like it needs two wireless devices
[11:57] <FaresKAlaboud> Hi everyone, new RaspPi user here!
[11:57] <retrosenator> hmm, well how do those wifi repeaters work? they have two devices?
[11:57] <retrosenator> is it possible to have 2 virtual wifi devices emulated on a single device which switches?
[11:57] <ShorTie> just equate it to wired connections where they have differrent wires for send and recieve
[11:59] <retrosenator> I think the hardware is capable, the question is software support for this function

[12:02] <ABC-XYZ> single adapter wifi repeaters perform very flakily, when you get them to work at all
[12:03] <retrosenator> ABC-XYZ: thank you, so you have some experience?
[12:04] <ABC-XYZ> retrosenator: actually i haven't used such a setup myself for the reason I mentioned
[12:05] <ShorTie> plus with the limited usb bandwidth, i would think it would be easy to overload the rPi making it's performance not really exceptable
[12:05] <ShorTie> even using 2
[12:06] <ABC-XYZ> try google hostapd indeed if you'd want to try
[12:07] <ABC-XYZ> you'd need some virtual dummy interface as well

[19:06] <raskolnik> yes
[19:06] <raskolnik> the printer adds fine
[19:06] <raskolnik> and when I try to print something there are no error messages, and CUPS treats the job as completed. But nothing actually prints
[19:07] <raskolnik> Printer is a Samsung CLP-310, and I'm using the "recommended" driver that comes with CUPS
[19:07] <thebeav> raskolnik: I'd suggest going "Office Space" on it lol
[19:07] <raskolnik> the thought has crossed my mind

[21:39] <autrilla> On XBMC on the RPi, why does having the storage partition on a USB drive improve performance?
[21:40] <shiftplusone> Well, a usb flash drive is a little bit faster than an SD card on the pi
[21:40] * koell (~galactica@178.115.133.146.wireless.dyn.drei.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[21:40] <shiftplusone> but I wouldn't expect any noticeable performance boost.
[21:41] <autrilla> shiftplusone, but isn't the OS on the system partition?
[21:41] <shiftplusone> depends on what you're talking about... openelec? raspbmc?
[21:41] <autrilla> shiftplusone, all of them really, people recommend doing it on XBian, Openelec and Raspbmc
[21:42] <shiftplusone> Well, I don't know how the OS itself matters, since you would mostly be accessing the storage.
[21:42] <shiftplusone> the rest would already be mostly in memory anyway.
[21:42] <Xark> autrilla: Bit faster for reads, nicely faster for writes in my experience, but then you have seeks. Real issue is SD card is not very reliable long term (if you write to them much at all).
[21:43] <ircubic> Yeah, the combination of much greater size available, much higher amount of accesses per sector, and higher speed makes an external drive the better choice
[21:43] <shiftplusone> I would still be surprised if the difference is noticeable. I'd stick to USB for reliability, but not so much for performance.
[21:44] <ircubic> well, theoretically speaking as long as your read speed is higher than the bitrate of the movie clip you're watching you should be fine
[21:45] <ircubic> with a little leeway for other data access
[21:47] <autrilla> ircubic, oh, they say performance in general is better
[21:47] <autrilla> Not only playing videos
[21:49] <Xark> Not sure, but perhaps SD card takes more CPU than USB?
[21:49] <ircubic> I'd be suspicious about that, random-seeks are faster on SD cards over a (non-SSD) USB Disk
[21:49] <ircubic> Assuming the Pi supports high-speed SDHC cards, they're only 10MB/s slower than a USB 2.0 disk (theoretical numbers)
[21:49] <Xark> ircubic: OK, but seeks don't take CPU.
[21:50] <ircubic> Xark: not responding to you, I have no data about that. I'm just assuming chip-support for both :)
[21:50] <Xark> ircubic: Ok. Yeah, it would be a driver difference. I know USB is not super efficient on RPi as well (so the difference may not be significant).

[21:51] <ircubic> But hey, the easiest way to test it out is to try, if you have a USB drive of any kind laying around
[21:51] <ircubic> and the time to do so :)
[21:52] <ircubic> personally I'd just go for a disk anyway, because you have access to much higher capacity
[21:53] <Xark> ircubic: My RPi has been on external USB for a while now (with USB as root FS). Works great and has been much more reliable for me (and not really noticeably slower than SD for the most part - even with seeks).
