[0:00] <Raynerd> 30 is more affordable for sure.
[0:00] <SiC> the £30 is nearly the same as the £60, just doesnt have the wind direction
[0:00] <SiC> has outside windspeed, rainfall, temperature and humidity
[0:00] <SiC> the pi+arduino lives inside
[0:00] <SiC> as it receives it wirelessly
[0:01] <SiC> http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/professional-wireless-weather-centre-n25fr?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_term=14P2_W3_D6&utm_content=Product-5&utm_campaign=14P2-20
[0:01] * Otyugh (~otyugh__@ARennes-251-1-200-223.w2-10.abo.wanadoo.fr) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:01] <SiC> I forget the manufacturer of those weather stations for a moment
[0:01] <Raynerd> it certainly looks similar. In fact, the sensor part looks identical minus the wind direction. Just the data panel looks slightly less complex
[0:01] <SiC> they're all made pretty much by the same company
[0:01] <SiC> ah remembered
[0:01] <Raynerd> yes... I was googling the other night.
[0:01] <SiC> fine offset
[0:01] <SiC> http://www.foshk.com/
[0:01] <Raynerd> that is the one!
[0:01] * psilocide is now known as psilocida
[0:02] <Raynerd> I actually had a second hand one offered me for 20 yesterday, tested and posted but then for 30 I suppose I`d better go new
[0:02] <SiC> I'm just lashing an atmel with an arduino bootloader on into the pi
[0:02] <SiC> next step is to solder it up on a bit of veroboard
[0:02] <SiC> a gertduino probably would work just as well
[0:03] <Raynerd> :-p you are losing me now! I`m only just getting into this really.
[0:03] <SiC> https://github.com/SevenW/wirelessweather and https://github.com/lucsmall/BetterWH2
[0:03] <SiC> gertduino is a arduino that plugs into a Pi
[0:03] <SiC> basically
[0:03] <SiC> then you attach a 433mhz receiver into the gertduino/arduino
[0:03] <Raynerd> gert board/
[0:03] <Raynerd> ?
[0:04] <SiC> that then does the demodulation (with the above libraries)
[0:04] <SiC> and then spit the data out over the serial lines
[0:04] <SiC> which is then picked up on the Pi over serial
[0:04] <SiC> into python, etc for further processing
[0:04] <Raynerd> OK, sounds interesting. So why is the arduino/gert needed? Why not direct into pi?
[0:04] <SiC> http://www.element14.com/community/docs/DOC-64326/l/gertduino-add-on-board-for-raspberry-pi <- I think its done by the same guy as the gertboard
[0:04] <SiC> you could do, but the Pi isn't great for timing stuff
[0:05] * trickyhero_ (~trickyher@d4-50-67-5.try.wideopenwest.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:05] <SiC> plus the protocol side is all done in that library
[0:05] <SiC> plus the protocol side is all done in the libraries above
[0:05] * psilocida (~unknown@c-76-101-85-239.hsd1.fl.comcast.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:05] <Raynerd> ok, fair enough. So how far through are you with it now?
[0:06] <SiC> in theory, it could be entirely possible for the Pi to shutdown, the gertdruino/arduino takes the data and after a set time (half hour? hour? etc) fire the Pi to spit it over wifi
[0:06] <SiC> that way it could run off batteries
[0:06] <SiC> got it receiving data ok, next step is to pump the data into the pi to do something with it
[0:06] <Raynerd> That is a nice idea!
[0:06] <SiC> the arduino bit is like a half hour job tbh
[0:07] <SiC> those libraries do all the hardwork for you
[0:08] <Raynerd> looks v good.
[0:08] <SiC> it almost feels like cheating
[0:08] <SiC> but using 433mhz (i.e. wirelessly reciving straight from the outdoor weather station), allows all the weather vane stuff stay outside
[0:08] <SiC> up in the air
[0:08] <Raynerd> Well I am envious - it looks a nice bit of kit but don`t think I`d be confident enough to set it up without a "for dummies" guide :-p
[0:09] <SiC> and the Pi,etc which isn't as waterproof, can stay inside in the warm :)
[0:09] * Guest77689 (~dreamchas@unaffiliated/dreamchaser) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:09] <SiC> have you done much coding before?
[0:09] <Raynerd> SiC - that is a good point as my pi is having to stay outside
[0:09] <Raynerd> Right - I gotta go!
[0:09] <SiC> np
[0:09] <SiC> cya!
[0:09] <Raynerd> god night
[0:09] <Raynerd> good even
[0:09] <SiC> have fun with the project ;)
[0:09] <Raynerd> thanks man, you too!

[1:14] <theTroy> Hi, does anyone know if it is possible to boot linux installed on USB while you have already booted into the SD card linux? I do not mean via restarting of the pi, but actually performing run-time boot of the other kernel
[1:15] * gbaman (~gbaman@host81-134-114-61.in-addr.btopenworld.com) has joined #raspberrypi

[1:16] * oldtopman (~oldtopman@unaffiliated/oldtopman) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:17] <theTroy> ShorTie: no, that keep the current OS running, the point is effectively to boot from current runtime into a different runtime, shutting down the current one in the process WITHOUT restarting pi
[1:18] <theTroy> i.e. imagine you booted raspbian A, then in terminal wrote something like "bootload raspbian B.img", it will transfer execution state to the raspbian B kernel and clear our the A from the memory
[1:18] * Bozza (~Bozza@unaffiliated/bozza) Quit (Read error: No route to host)
[1:19] <ShorTie> can you do that on any kind of computer ??
[1:19] <sirderpalot> yes.
[1:19] <theTroy> Thats what GRUB does effectively... or any other bootloader
[1:19] <ShorTie> what advantage is it ??
[1:19] <pksato> Linux kernel have hability to replace it self for new version (or not).
[1:19] <shiftplusone> no
[1:20] <shiftplusone> kexec doesn't work on the pi
[1:20] <sirderpalot> ShorTie: no need for "reboots" after upgrading kernel
[1:20] <ShorTie> no, grub just boots diferent kernels
[1:20] <theTroy> the point is to set up an SSH-capable bootloader on read-only SD card that would be able to boot other images from USB stick
[1:20] <sirderpalot> ssh-capable bootloader? o.o
[1:20] * tuttinator (~tuttinato@2406:e000:e3f0:1:190d:f0f7:4a56:607c) Quit (Quit: Linkinus - http://linkinus.com)
[1:20] * cottongi1 is now known as cottongin
[1:20] <sirderpalot> that's no bootloader... that's an os! D:
[1:20] <theTroy> basically a bare-bone linux install that would play a role of bootloader
[1:20] <shiftplusone> there is a bootloader
[1:20] <ShorTie> berryboot might wor for you then
[1:20] * zer0rez (~Z@cpe-74-76-225-89.nycap.res.rr.com) Quit (Quit: 99.999% chance you just witnessed me hit the wrong button.)
[1:20] <theTroy> I think NOOBS/Berryboot works through restarting pi
[1:21] <theTroy> if I am not mistaken
[1:21] <shiftplusone> correct
[1:21] <shiftplusone> well not berryboot
[1:21] <theTroy> So it would not work in case of read-only SD card
[1:21] <shiftplusone> IIRC berryboot uses switch_root or pivot_root instead
[1:21] <theTroy> hmm?
[1:21] <shiftplusone> so the advantage of NOOBS is that you can run a different kernel for each distro, which you can't do with berryboot
[1:22] <shiftplusone> (last time I checked)
[1:22] <theTroy> interesting
[1:23] * felipealmeida (~user@179.210.237.70) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[1:23] <theTroy> my aim is to create a robust headless install
[1:23] <theTroy> which I can send off for colocation
[1:23] * timb_us (~timb_us@pool-72-82-113-34.nrflva.east.verizon.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:23] <theTroy> i.e. read-only SD card with SSH OS that is able to boot into other OSes
[1:23] <theTroy> as pis tend to corrupt SDs/USBs
[1:24] <shiftplusone> NOOBS is open and uses buildroot, so you can easily modify it to add whatever features you need (like SSH)
[1:24] <theTroy> but as we mentioned before, it restarts pi to boot other OS
[1:24] <theTroy> hence it would not work with read-only SD card
[1:24] <shiftplusone> why don't you want to restart?
[1:24] <theTroy> as it would not be able to alter the config
[1:24] * gbaman (~gbaman@host81-134-114-61.in-addr.btopenworld.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[1:25] <shiftplusone> oh right
[1:25] * BCMM (~BCMM@unaffiliated/bcmm) Quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[1:25] <shiftplusone> I am actually not 100% sure how NOOBS specifies which kernel to boot.
[1:26] <theTroy> I was trying to find out, but its quite difficult without actually digging into the code
[1:26] <shiftplusone> I can take a look later if you don't figure it out.
[1:26] <theTroy> berryboot is also not a great option due to kernel limitation (i.e. I would not be able to update the kernel)
[1:26] * thesheff17 (~thesheff1@24-148-57-183.c3-0.lem-ubr1.chi-lem.il.cable.rcn.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:26] <shiftplusone> If it's read-only, you wouldn't be able to do it anyway though O_o
[1:26] <theTroy> well, definitely not going to do it now as its sleepy-sleepy time soon :)
[1:27] <theTroy> shiftplusone: as discussed before, berryboot seems to boot other OS via switch_root
[1:27] <theTroy> which does not require restart
[1:27] <theTroy> so you could have read-only SD card and boot into USB OS
[1:27] * tombrough (~tom@cpc4-newt3-0-0-cust54.newt.cable.virginm.net) has left #raspberrypi
[1:27] <shiftplusone> you said you may want to change the kernel
[1:27] <theTroy> via switch_root
[1:27] <theTroy> yes
[1:27] <theTroy> in which case berryboot won't work
[1:27] <theTroy> doesn't mean it can't be done :P
[1:27] <shiftplusone> "I would not be able to update the kernel" how would it work at all with a read only sd card?
[1:28] <ShorTie> leave bootberry alone and just rename your kernel
[1:28] <shiftplusone> have you considered u-boot and fetching the kernel from the net?
[1:29] <shiftplusone> (I am not sure if it has that capability on the pi, but it's worth looking into.
[1:30] <theTroy> uboot works on pi
[1:31] <theTroy> difficulty is that it does not support ssh
[1:31] <shiftplusone> sure, but at least you can boot a kernel which does and can switch_root or do whatever you want.
[1:31] <shiftplusone> so you get the ability to switch kernels and boot whichever OS you want
[1:32] <theTroy> what if the place where kernels are located becomes corrupt?
[1:32] <shiftplusone> you mean online or on the sd card?
[1:32] <theTroy> right, anyhow, I will have a think, have to go now, some good ideas were stated though :P

[13:04] <local> hello all. Yesterday I asked here on the channel about an issue where "logcheck" is generating an infinite CPU load >90% CPU because "egrep" is running under logcheck user. I have some RPi's running with same configuration, and they are not showing this issue.
[13:05] <local> I have found out, that the particular RPi which shows this issue, is running the package "uv4l" and "uv4l-raspicam". These packages create a device driver called /dev/video0. I am not sure, why. But ==> when these uv4l-packages are installed, logcheck is showing this strange behaviour.
[13:06] <local> Just want to share this information and ask if anyone else is experiencing this issue/bug ? How could I troubleshoot/debug that? Why is causing this package such a problem for logcheck's mechanisms?

[13:49] <ShorTie> local, you might want to try the offical v4l drivers also
[13:49] <local> ShorTie: what does that mean in detail? why does it confuse logcheck as result?
[13:50] <local> ShorTie: how can I obtain them?
[13:50] <ShorTie> oh, i don't know for logcheck
[13:50] <ShorTie> they are in apt-get
[13:52] <ShorTie> sorry don't have a rPi booted at the moment
[13:52] <ShorTie> but a simple 'apt-cache search v4l' should find them for you

[14:00] <local> ShorTie: don't understand why I should obtain any V4L driver. I did read many tutorials which explain how to use "motion" on a RPi with the raspicam installed. They all explain how to install and use "uv4l" and "uv4l-raspicam" package. Did never read anything about default V4L driver. Any clues?

[17:31] <gordonDrogon> spikerd, I've not tried to edit a video made by the Pi - maybe one day...
[17:32] <gordonDrogon> spikerd, also with 'free' you'll see memory allocated in cache and buffers - that's normal. the ideal situation is actually for there to be no free memory - and have it all in buffers/cache - that's to make file access faster. loading/running programs will release this as needed.
[17:33] <spikerd> gordonDrogon: yeah, no, that wasn't it, my prob was shared ram for gpu
[17:33] <spikerd> I just read http://hubcitylabs.org/unlocking-your-new-raspberry-pis-512mb-of-memory/
[17:34] <spikerd> and changed my boot/config, rebooting now to see if it works
[17:34] <neilr> local: save the table rules with sudo iptables-save > /blah/iptables.conf. Then load them in your /etc/network/interface file with something like "post-up iptables-restore < /blah/iptables.conf". Can't remember the exact syntax now.
[17:34] <spikerd> since I don't use ex, this is just as a mini server for a security camera so I don't need video processing there, but I need as much mem as I can for buffering

[17:36] <spikerd> I'm working through this: http://www.instructables.com/id/Raspberry-Pi-as-low-cost-HD-surveillance-camera/?ALLSTEPS
[17:36] <gordonDrogon> spikerd, you may also want a small swapfile and to increase the swappiness.... that should make less used programs be migrated to swap when a little more memory is needed.
[17:36] <local> spikerd: you cannot use 16MB as GPU memory, when you want to use the RaspiCam Module
[17:36] <spikerd> and I can get it to stream to mplayer on my nix box, but as I said if I record the video to the SD card and then move it over and try to edit nothing will open it
[17:37] <local> try to use gpu_mem=128 @/boot/config.txt
[17:37] <spikerd> local: how come? isn't it just data coming from the camera and streamed onto the net? is the GPU used for something? I'm not doing any processing on the pi
[17:37] <spikerd> local: yeah that's what I had

[17:43] <Darkwater> instead I want to stream the desktop with ffmpeg
[17:44] <Darkwater> does anyone know how I'd do this?
[17:44] <local> spikerd: what exactly are you missing? if you have configured 16MB for GPU, than your RPi shows 485MBs of free memory, that's normal IMHO.

[17:45] <spikerd> 485 total
[17:45] <local> yes, sorry, I also did mean TOTAL
[17:46] <local> all my RPi's running with 16M GPU memory show me TOTAL=485 when "free -m"
[17:46] <spikerd> well pardon my dumb question, but shouldn't total + 16 for the gpu = 512?

[17:48] <local> spikerd: I'm sorried, I don't know where the 11MB are used by the RPi. The only thing I can say is: all my RPi's show 485M free memory when I use the command 'free -m'
[17:48] <nid0> its just rounding.
[17:48] <spikerd> how is it rounding 496944 to 485??
[17:48] <spikerd> yeah, was gonna ask that :)
[17:49] <nid0> because it is
[17:49] <nid0> 496944 / 1024 = 485.296875
[17:49] <nid0> = 485
[17:49] <spikerd> oh, you're right, good catch
[17:50] <spikerd> mystery solved, thanks guys
[17:50] <spikerd> gonna re-enable the cam and see what happens
[17:51] <spikerd> so yeah, back to my original question, any thought on why I can stream just fine to mplayer as per tutorial, but if I record and save locally even mplayer won't play it?

[20:04] <thebeav> My friend just posed a question to me and I have no idea what the correct answer is. How can you overvolt the pi to 6 volts via software configuration when the power supplied to the board is only 5 volts?
[20:05] <SpeedEvil> you can't.
[20:05] * jlf (~user@pdpc/supporter/active/jlf) has joined #raspberrypi
[20:05] <SpeedEvil> Overvolting in that manner does nothing.
[20:05] <IT_Sean> ^ that
[20:05] <SpeedEvil> Overvolting to 6V supply at best will not promptly kill the pi.
[20:05] <IT_Sean> in fact, applying 6v to your Pi would release the magical blue smoke
[20:05] <SpeedEvil> It may well kill it instantly though
[20:05] <IT_Sean> it would likely go *FZZLPOP!*
[20:06] <IT_Sean> and the smell... ohhh ye gods the smell... the smell would be horiffic!
[20:07] <thebeav> so the overvolt_voltage option in /boot/config.txt does absolutely nothing?
[20:07] <thebeav> *over_voltage
[20:08] <SpeedEvil> It doesn't change the input voltasge - that remains at 5V
