[0:00] * plugwash slaps [Saint] arround a bit with a large trout
[0:00] <[Saint]> "NZ, where, twink doesn't mean what you think it does"
[0:01] <steve_rox> haha
[0:01] <steve_rox> i wont elaborate on what it is
[0:02] <J-e-f-f-A> And in the US, if you "have a fag", it has a completely different meaning... yikes.
[0:02] <[Saint]> Duh...its white out, what else would it be? ;)
[0:02] <steve_rox> yeah ive had to learn so many meanings to words
[0:03] <[Saint]> A while ago, we had an exchange student living with us who though that "togs" was the most hilarious word ever.
[0:03] <[Saint]> (swim suit)
[0:03] <J-e-f-f-A> Heh
[0:03] * TacitBlue (~xubuntu@154.157-62-69.ftth.swbr.surewest.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
[0:04] <ozzzy> togs?
[0:05] <J-e-f-f-A> ^ he explained, see next line. lol
[0:05] <ozzzy> I saw that... I was trying to show disbelief
[0:05] * tombrough (~tom@cpc4-newt3-0-0-cust54.newt.cable.virginm.net) has left #raspberrypi
[0:05] <J-e-f-f-A> I watch "Top Gear" all the time - and have finally gotten used to the different car terms, like "Bonnot" "Boot" "Wing", etc.
[0:06] <steve_rox> least they teach you something
[0:06] <J-e-f-f-A> At least "Roof" and "Door" are still common. ;-)
[0:06] <ozzzy> bonnet (btw)
[0:06] <steve_rox> like teaching you how to make a rocket car
[0:06] <[Saint]> ...and then waste yourself in it?
[0:06] <J-e-f-f-A> But either the steering sheel is on the wrong side, or they've flipped the picture horizontally. lol!
[0:06] <steve_rox> nah i ment that other one
[0:06] <J-e-f-f-A> *wheel
[0:07] <steve_rox> when they converted the three wheeler into a shuttle
[0:07] * IT_Sean (~IT_Sean@applefritter/IRCStaff/UltimateMacUser1) has left #raspberrypi
[0:07] <ozzzy> they walk on the pavement over there
[0:07] <[Saint]> That actually makes some sense. Since they almost always use paving slabs for the purpose.
[0:08] <steve_rox> could use a voltage/current sensor on the rpi for automated battery chargein
[0:08] <[Saint]> Whereas we use tar seal/asphalt.
[0:08] <[Saint]> "footpath" FTW.
[0:08] <plugwash> [Saint], I think you have a distroted view of britan....................................
[0:08] * ukgamer (~ukgamer@host81-147-25-31.range81-147.btcentralplus.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:09] * shiftplusone thinks concrete slabs make more sense.
[0:09] <J-e-f-f-A> Oh, we have "round-a-bout"s in my area, only we call them "Rotarys"
[0:09] <steve_rox> in the uk our roads melt during a heatwave
[0:09] <[Saint]> That actually formed a common saying in NZ.
[0:09] <[Saint]> a "hot tar day".
[0:09] * ozzzy ponders downloading The Avengers.... but 59G
[0:09] <ozzzy> whew
[0:10] <J-e-f-f-A> So I'd do fine driving in the UK, except for the whole 'driving on the wrong side of the road' thing... lol
[0:10] <plugwash> sure some places in the UK do have paving slabs on their pavements but norm is asphalt here too
[0:10] <steve_rox> and in the uk we drink gallons of tea a day
[0:10] <[Saint]> plugwash: I meant US vs. <most European settlements>.
[0:10] <ozzzy> in NA we drive on parkways and park on driveways
[0:10] <ozzzy> go figure
[0:10] <[Saint]> Not UK vs. NZ which is basically identical.
[0:12] <steve_rox> we dont get melting roads this time the year
[0:12] <steve_rox> mostly just roads turning into canals/rivers
[0:12] * [styx] (~pi@unaffiliated/jack1/x-8565952) Quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[0:12] <steve_rox> ducks like it tho
[0:13] <J-e-f-f-A> I live in "New England" (near the city of Boston) - most of our roads are asphalt as concrete roads are harder to maintain in the harsh 4-season climates up here... But then we get 'pot holes' in the asphalt... grr.
[0:15] * pwh (~pwh@rle-13-154.mit.edu) Quit ()
[0:16] <shiftplusone> concrete roads? O_o
[0:16] * Encrypt (~Chuck-nor@AMontsouris-553-1-71-57.w92-151.abo.wanadoo.fr) Quit (Quit: Quitte)
[0:16] <shiftplusone> that's a thing?
[0:16] <[Saint]> US is full of 'em.
[0:16] <[Saint]> Giant paving slabs.
[0:16] <shiftplusone> hm
[0:16] <plugwash> AIUI they experimented with concrete roads in the UK and decided that they sucked
[0:17] <plugwash> the problem with concrete is it's inflexible so you have to have expansion gaps
[0:17] <shiftplusone> seems like it would be more slippery and you wouldn't be able to curve them to let the water run off.
[0:17] <plugwash> which makes the driving surface rough
[0:17] <[Saint]> Our roads are asphalt, with gravel dumped on top before it sets.
[0:17] <[Saint]> Not very nice for cyclists if one happens to come off.
[0:17] <[Saint]> think "cheese grater".
[0:19] <shiftplusone> I had some fun coming off a motorbike on such a road.
[0:19] * steve_rox (~pi@82-69-127-162.dsl.in-addr.zen.co.uk) Quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[0:20] <[Saint]> Motorbike crashes are vicious enough without adding flesh stripping elements to the equation.
[0:20] <[Saint]> I sincerely hope you had some decent leathers.
[0:20] <shiftplusone> usually only if you're a moron who doesn't wear gear.
[0:20] <shiftplusone> (and that was the one day I was such a moron)

[9:12] <saedelaere> I have written a c++ lib for the pi. I implemented gpio handling based on sysfs. this works great but i have a weird problem. sometimes, after hours, a pin does not respond correctly anymore. When I try to read the value of the pin the value file seems to be empty. Same problem with the direction file. I have noticed at the same time the 1-wire interface seemed to have stopped. A ds18b20 temp sensor
[9:13] <saedelaere> returned values of minus 200°C at the same time
[9:14] <saedelaere> and this behaviour did continue until i tried to login to the pi via ssh. i had to unplug the edimax wlan adapter and plug it in again

[9:29] <ShorTie> but like you said it is not fully loaded down
[9:30] <ShorTie> would it be much work to supperate the sensors to an other power supply ??
[9:31] <saedelaere> but I had this problem before. At that time i used two different power supplys for the pi and the sensors. I will build a new power supply board this evening with two linear voltage regulators. one for the pi and one for the sensors. The problem is those voltage regulators provide max 800mA. But it should be enough for a model a with only a wlan adapter plugged in.

[9:37] <saedelaere> ShorTie: At the moment I can't change the power supply. I have a presentation at the university in 4 hours about my raspberry pi / sensor setup for my diploma thesis.
[9:39] <saedelaere> Oh and yes those are definitely model As
[9:39] <saedelaere> http://elinux.org/RPi_Hardware#Specifications
[9:40] <saedelaere> 300mA for the Model A
[9:40] <saedelaere> but ok the wlan adapter is not included
[9:41] <ShorTie> got a powered usb hub by chance ??
[9:42] <saedelaere> i have other voltage regulators here that can output up to 3A but those require a heatsink and the shipment ordered in china is stuck at the german customs duty grrr
[9:43] <saedelaere> ShorTie: Yes I have one.
[9:43] <saedelaere> I'll try...
[9:43] <ShorTie> heat sink for 3a ya, but at 1a they my not need 1
[9:44] <ShorTie> ya, powered hub would be the quickest/easyest fix maybe
[9:45] <saedelaere> those regulators need a voltage dropof at least 3v and when I power my sensors and the pi from only one of them this could be really getting hot. Maybe I should just try ;)
[9:45] <ShorTie> what are they, like a 7805 ??
[9:46] <saedelaere> LM350 --> linear voltage regulator. the 7805 is a switching regulator?

[9:46] <ShorTie> not sure for sure, just a 5v reg to me
[9:48] <ShorTie> doesn't help you today, but you can most likely get complete power supply boards from ebay/china then you can build them for
[9:48] <saedelaere> Oh and some pololu breakout boards which use switching regulators but don't know which ics they use
[9:48] <saedelaere> 7805 is also a linear regulator i see
[9:49] <Armand> I bought a variable regulator on ebay, few quid.
[9:49] <Armand> That easily does 2A
[9:51] <ShorTie> like this for $1.30 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1pcs-LM2596S-Power-Module-DC-DC-Buck-Converter-Step-Down-Module-LM2596-/121276499650?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c3ca486c2

[9:51] <saedelaere> Armand: is that one using a switching regulator? Most of them with such a high power rating do. But switching regulators introduce lots of noise. The sensors I use do not work porperly with a voltage ripple higher than 30mV and that is a problem with switching regulators

[9:58] * nimmis|work (~kjell@fenix.its.ltu.se) has joined #raspberrypi
[9:58] <yeboot> Sorry that's pretty random; actual question: what distro should I use with my RPi? I used to run arch then gentoo, but I could care less about compile time. The reason I'm stand-offish about something like Debian, though, is that I want development libraries, which debian tends to have in seperate packages (lib<whatever>-dev)
[9:59] <ShorTie> ya, but raspbian has all the special sauce just for the rPi
[10:00] <yeboot> what do you even mean by that
[10:00] <ShorTie> i agree -dev packages canbe a pain at times, but 'apt-cache search' normally finds them preaty quickly
[10:01] <ShorTie> raspbian is optimized and is the offical os for the rPi
[10:01] <yeboot> yea, and apt searches packages waay faster than something like emerge
[10:01] <yeboot> I thought NOOBS was the official os for the rPi
[10:02] <ShorTie> emerge doesn't take long, but the compiling can take days .. :/~

[10:03] <yeboot> ShorTie I mean sure, by comparison, checking for dependencies is a very small percentage of the time required to install software, but emerge regularly will take about a minute to tell you what the dependencies for a package would be

[10:04] <yeboot> I can do that
[10:04] <yeboot> I currently have a stage3 tarball on it and nothing else, iirc
[10:04] <ShorTie> i know all about Gentoo, played with it for years
[10:04] <yeboot> had a working chrooted boot table and stuff, I just didn't want to deal with ompilation
[10:04] <yeboot> compilation* when I set up the fstab conf
[10:04] <yeboot> so I figured I'd come in and ask for everyone's opinion
[10:05] <yeboot> yeah ShorTie I think I'd have to have another machine cross compile binaries but then that'd be a TON of overhead just to update
[10:05] <ShorTie> i tried Gentoo on the rPi, but messed it up to many times and switched to raspbian
[10:06] <yeboot> yeah, when I used to run arch on the pi the lack of a way of seeing *watch out for this update* in their system (like gentoo's eselect news) had me un-breaking stuff regularly
[10:06] <yeboot> I kinda liked the boot time, though

[10:08] <yeboot> nah, it's a fast way to mess stuff up, for sure
[10:08] <yeboot> but it doesn't always wreck your install
[10:08] <ShorTie> arch is cool for a specific purpose, but raspbian is the way to fly for a desktop, imho
[10:09] <yeboot> I'm not going to use it as a desktop, though
[10:09] <yeboot> though the flexibility of debian is probably more along the lines of what I /should/ go for, actually

[19:34] <DaWoop> I played alot.
[19:34] <DaWoop> why?
[19:35] <shiftplusone> ah, I got it working, just had to set some env vars. Takes less than 10 minutes, vs the 77 minutes on the pi. Another user in #raspbian also came up with a pretty cool way to cross-compile which usually just works.

[19:39] <DaWoop> indeed

[19:42] <raynerd> http://pastie.org/8752879
[19:43] <raynerd> to me it only runs when called for i.e defined by how often you upload the data to xively. BUT then again, it takes an average of 5 seconds of data and yet there is no delay in getting that average?!
[19:43] <raynerd> i.e no 5 second wait
[19:44] <raynerd> Anyway, getting there!

[20:22] <DaWoop> Human has the method Talk
[20:23] <DaWoop> Joe is a Human
[20:23] <raynerd> so the class is defined by methods which all the objects in that class then use
[20:23] <raynerd> so we could have an object called Joe
[20:23] <raynerd> called Chris sorry.
[20:24] <DaWoop> yes
[20:24] <DaWoop> but a class can contain properties too, like the name thing
[20:24] <raynerd> he would be another human and since our class only has the talk method, we can`t do very much but if it was padded out, it could do more

[20:43] <DaWoop> since the object will have the age and the name property and the self. accesses the object, the self. will have the corresponding age and name
