[0:02] * Pankoi (~Pankoi@host86-172-169-93.range86-172.btcentralplus.com) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[0:04] <rikkib> Ahhhh Must wait for the I2C to be not busy before trying to send more bytes to it. (MC9S08 I2C talking to HMC5883L compass)
[0:04] * intothev01d (~intothev0@unaffiliated/intothev01d) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:04] * pksato (~PEBKAC@unaffiliated/pksato) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[0:07] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable167.12-130-66.mc.videotron.ca) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:07] * [Saint] wonders at what point rikkib will just give up and start fabricating his own boards. ;)
[0:08] <[Saint]> I'll fund that shizzle of Kickstarter, yo.
[0:08] <[Saint]> *on
[0:08] <rikkib> One day
[0:09] <rikkib> But any board will likely just interconnect modules with a few add on bits.
[0:09] * Encrypt (~Chuck-nor@AMontsouris-553-1-113-237.w92-151.abo.wanadoo.fr) Quit (Quit: Quitte)
[0:09] <rikkib> This part of the project is to get a wireless wind vane going
[0:10] <rikkib> battery operated using the S08 micro, compass and nRF24 (light and temp sensors as well)
[0:11] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable167.12-130-66.mc.videotron.ca) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:11] <rikkib> next comes I2C slave using the s08 to gather data from things that need a to d lie the rain sensor I have.
[0:12] * salmon_ (~salmon_@81.26.151.58) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[0:12] * phantoxeD (destroy@a89-154-119-158.cpe.netcabo.pt) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:13] <rikkib> Anyway onward and upwards now I have figured why the compass was not talking to me.
[0:14] <rikkib> Mush is not disclosed in the data sheet.
[0:14] <rikkib> Much
[0:15] <rikkib> Data sheet says write 0x3D 0x06 to read six bytes but if you send just 0x3D it will send one byte back
[0:16] <rikkib> No indication of the second behavior in the data sheet
[0:17] <rikkib> and from reading other code from other micro's it seems other things are not documented well or at all.
[0:18] * mpmc is now known as mpmc[BNC4FREE]
[0:18] * ppq (~ppq@unaffiliated/ppq) Quit (Quit: ja)

[0:43] <rikkib> Use the ntp protocol
[0:44] <rikkib> apt-get install ntp I think
[0:44] <rikkib> Raspbian has it already istalled
[0:44] <rikkib> and enabled
[0:45] * DataLinkDroid (~DataLinkD@1.150.250.131) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:46] <RainMan28> thanks rikkib
[0:46] <rikkib> Whay OS are you running?
[0:46] <rikkib> What
[0:46] <RainMan28> raspbian
[0:47] <rikkib> You should see it in /var/log/syslog
[0:47] <RainMan28> ah yeah
[0:47] <RainMan28> seems to be working now
[0:47] <rikkib> maybe dmesg
[0:47] <RainMan28> i added sudo dpkg-reconfigure ntp as a script in /etc/init.d/
[0:47] <RainMan28> should I not do that?
[0:48] <rikkib> Can break if the machine has no IP or route to the net
[0:48] * chod (~chod@toy-town.demon.co.uk) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:48] <RainMan28> ok
[0:48] <rikkib> no
[0:48] <RainMan28> I deleted it
[0:49] <RainMan28> what is the opposite of sudo update-rc.d scriptname defaults
[0:49] <rikkib> hmmm
[0:49] <RainMan28> because after I had created that script I ran the command: sudo update-rc.d time-update defaults
[0:49] <rikkib> man update-rc.d
[0:49] <rikkib> will tell you
[0:50] <rikkib> it has many commands
[0:50] <rikkib> add remove delete type stuff
[0:51] <rikkib> I never remember stuff like that... that is what man commandname is for
[0:52] <RainMan28> cool
[0:52] <RainMan28> sudo update-rc.d time-update remove
[0:52] <RainMan28> seems to have done the job
[0:53] * x1337807x (~x1337807x@207-170-205-178.static.twtelecom.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[0:54] <rikkib> You do not actually remove rc scripts, just disbale them and the likes... But at the same time rc scripts are in there for a purpose. Anything that does not work should not be.
[0:55] <rikkib> To roll your own rc script look at the skeleton file
[0:55] <rikkib> or other rc scripts
[0:55] * spooq (~spooq@185.16.162.51) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)

[2:23] * swiss (swiss@calpo1337.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[2:23] <funkster> i am doing reverse ssh from my pi to a public server, ssh -N -R 2222:localhost:22 serverUser@25.25.25.2 - the problem im having is, if pi loses connectivity the connection on the public server listening on localhost port 2222 stays up.... i need it to timeout anything i can do?
[2:25] * Sashmo_ (~sashmo_@158.106.77.3) Quit (Ping timeout: 255 seconds)
[2:27] <ozzzy> run a cronjob to check the link?

[2:31] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable167.12-130-66.mc.videotron.ca) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[2:31] <funkster> ozzzy: looking for another option, i have a ton of different ssh tunnels
[2:32] <ozzzy> ahh
[2:34] <ShorTie> so you need the other pc to reset when the rPi loses it's connection to it ??
[2:34] <clever> funkster: one option, is to run something that generates traffic in that ssh connection
[2:34] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable167.12-130-66.mc.videotron.ca) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:34] <clever> funkster: for example, ssh -N -R 2222:localhost:22 serverUser@25.25.25.2 'watch date'
[2:34] <clever> funkster: every 2 seconds, watch will re-run date and send the output to the pi
[2:34] <clever> if the pi crashes, the sshd will timeout and force-close the connection
[2:35] * lvispy (~luiz@179-125-134-22.desktop.com.br) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:35] * helgrind (~Laurence@cpc4-glfd5-2-0-cust220.6-2.cable.virginm.net) has left #raspberrypi
[2:35] * coreyclark (~coreyclar@75.103.8.90) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:35] <funkster> clever: it seems to timeout on itself, but takes serveral minutes..
[2:36] <clever> generating traffic with watch may cause it to timeout sooner
[2:36] * polyrob (~polyrob@unaffiliated/mickn) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[2:36] <clever> under normal conditions, it may not even notice until you try to connect to the reverse ssh port
[2:36] * hyperair (~hyperair@ubuntu/member/hyperair) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[2:36] <clever> you could also enable the keep-alive options in ssh_config
[2:36] <funkster> trying to figure out what config that is, sending traffic through would be difficult in my case.. its a jumpbox for 100+ servers, they open up ssh tunnel to a port and then we have access to it when they are behind firewalls
[2:37] <clever> funkster: try keep-alive then
[2:37] <clever> clever@ramboot ~ $ cat .ssh/config |grep -i keep
[2:37] <clever> TCPKeepAlive yes
[2:37] <clever> hmmm, may need it on the ssh server also
[2:37] <clever> same option in /etc/ssh/sshd_config
[2:37] <funkster> keepalive will send requests and if they dont respond, disconnect?
[2:37] <clever> yep
[2:37] <funkster> gotcha
[2:37] <clever> i need it for a different reason
[2:38] <clever> my crap router will stop forwarding traffic if ssh is too idle
[2:38] <clever> even when the connection is perfectly stable
[2:38] <funkster> heh, damn.
[2:38] <clever> so i have to generate traffic to proove the ssh connection is still needed
[2:38] <clever> or ssh terminals die after 15mins, but remain open until i try to use it
[2:39] <SpeedEvil> clever: Or screen
[2:40] <clever> screen wont generate traffic on its own, and i always use screen+ssh
[2:40] <SpeedEvil> yeah - I was just saying
[2:41] <SpeedEvil> I was sure ssh had a keepalive option
[2:41] * polyrob (~polyrob@unaffiliated/mickn) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:43] <clever> SpeedEvil: do you know if there is a more recent pi kernel in .deb form?
[2:43] <clever> and suitable headers for dkms
[2:43] <SpeedEvil> clever: I do not know that.
[2:44] <SpeedEvil> My pi has been down since it stopped being sane.
[2:44] <SpeedEvil> USB got unstable.
[2:44] <clever> ah
[2:44] * Syliss (~Home2@dpncorp1.digitalpath.net) Quit (Quit: Syliss)
[2:44] <clever> i switched my 3d driver over to dkms, but apt only has 3.2 linux
[2:45] <clever> and that keeps causing a kernel panic
[2:45] <SpeedEvil> :/
[2:45] <clever> i switched back to latest kernel and fixed the panics
[2:45] <clever> but dkms doesnt handle the new ver

[19:13] <Werel> okay. I'm going to use what you have there, but this is what I currently have. Should I get rid of any of them?

[19:13] <Werel> target_link_libraries( **other items** /usr/local/lib/libwiringPi.so)
[19:14] <gordonDrogon> I've not a cmake extpert - thats why I diteched the cmake - someone else did it as part of trying to port it to a Mac...
[19:14] <gordonDrogon> wiringPi installs to /usr/local/lib. (and /usr/local/include)
[19:15] <gordonDrogon> if Raspbian, then these are searched automatically by the compiler&linker.
[19:15] <Werel> okay, and yes, it's Raspbian
[19:15] <gordonDrogon> assuming you did ./build in the wiringPi top-level.
[19:16] <Werel> yeah, I followed your install guide. Just for example, I can compile g++ -o file file.cpp -lwiringPi and get a workable program just fine.
[19:16] <Werel> ( but because the other program is made in cmake, I have to add this into that )
[19:17] <gordonDrogon> so for standard compiling, then 'cc -o test test.c -lwiringPi' is all that's needed, so you need to work out how to add -lwiringPi to the cmakefile environment. in that cmake file for rtb, it sets rtb_LINK_LIBRARIES - this is then used in a line: target_link_libraries(rtb ${rtb_LINK_LIBRARIES})
[19:18] <gordonDrogon> so it looks like CMake is looking for 'target_link_libraries' and using that in the linking phase.
[19:18] <gordonDrogon> that's my minimal understanding of it ...

[21:48] <Werel> gordonDrogon, I just realized what mistake I've been making! While the pinMode has already been set by other test programs I've run, I have not yet set wiringPiSetup() in the program I'm trying to troubleshoot. Would I be right in assuming that that has to be run in order for the program currently runninig to interact with the GPIO? Or is that a function that just kinda initializes it globally? ( by i
[21:48] <Werel> nitializes it globally, I refer to, say, in one program, it contains the instructions to set so many pins as output. those pins will stay as output when I run another program after that in case I forget to set them as out put there in that second program )

[21:54] <gordonDrogon> however the pins will stay in the same mode you set them to from program to program.
[21:54] <gordonDrogon> run gpio readall to check.

[23:10] <Raynerd> screenh = (height*gridheight) + ((gridheight)*margin) height needs changing to paddingh new variable right?
[23:11] <AbbyTheRat> wrong line
[23:11] <AbbyTheRat> not that one
[23:11] <AbbyTheRat> that one is fine
[23:13] <Raynerd> Ooops!
[23:13] <Raynerd> found it
[23:13] <Raynerd> when I double paddingh value, now all the square have gaps between the lines!!!
[23:13] <AbbyTheRat> o_o.. maybe wrong one still
[23:13] <AbbyTheRat> linkie
[23:14] <AbbyTheRat> paste the line you think it is
[23:14] <Raynerd> size = [screenw, screenh+paddingh]
[23:15] <AbbyTheRat> you did take out the changes to the other blocks?
[23:15] <Raynerd> with paddingh = 30. all is good and normal. When I add to 60, the squares move further apart with gaps between them. They stay the same 30 size though
[23:15] <AbbyTheRat> hmm
[23:15] <Raynerd> changes ... other blocks??
[23:15] <Raynerd> :-S
[23:15] <AbbyTheRat> hard to think when you have a kid flopping around on/near you
[23:15] * pwh (~pwh@c-24-61-11-18.hsd1.ma.comcast.net) Quit ()
[23:16] <Raynerd> ha...
[23:16] <AbbyTheRat> sounds like there's another line to change, hold on *re-read code*
[23:17] <AbbyTheRat> cause it sounded like when you increased the screen, the grid filled the space so there must be another area that need to change to tell the grid to fit a space
[23:17] * dj_pi (~dj@c-107-5-25-243.hsd1.mi.comcast.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:18] <Raynerd> there is like a line of blocks and then a line of black 30 wide, then blocks...
[23:18] <AbbyTheRat> textRect.centery = (height / 2) is another area height need to change to new value by the way
[23:18] <AbbyTheRat> but do "+paddingh * 2" instead of increasing the padding size,
[23:18] <AbbyTheRat> cause you need to know the value for the padding of just one side
[23:19] <AbbyTheRat> but we want padding on both side, hence *2
[23:19] <AbbyTheRat> can I see what you go so far?
[23:20] <Raynerd> http://pastie.org/8992495

[23:21] <AbbyTheRat> I like the comment, not quite correct but I like it XD
[23:22] <Raynerd> which?
[23:22] <AbbyTheRat> it's more of "space padding top/bottom of grid. Texts will fill this space"
[23:22] <AbbyTheRat> 17
[23:23] <AbbyTheRat> understand the different?
[23:23] * cccyRegeaneWolfe (~cccyRegea@210.23.18.116) Quit (Quit: Ping Timeout)
[23:23] <Raynerd> Sure sure... I wrote that before realising we would going to give padding above and below.
[23:24] <Raynerd> I thought it was exclusively top

[23:25] <AbbyTheRat> need to be changed back to the orginal code :)
[23:26] <AbbyTheRat> (margin+height)*row+margin+height, was the old code, that was fine
[23:26] * Squarepy (~Squarepy@unaffiliated/squarepy) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:26] <AbbyTheRat> you got it as (margin+paddingh)*row+margin+paddingh, now, which told it to add padding to the grids, which isn't what we want

[23:27] <AbbyTheRat> mhm, it would do, still set to 60?
[23:27] <Raynerd> yes
[23:27] <AbbyTheRat> with the code paddingh * 2 in the size?
[23:27] <Raynerd> no. sorry
[23:27] * dreamon (~dreamon@unaffiliated/dreamon) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[23:28] <AbbyTheRat> so in the code, it went from "top 30, put the text half way 30", to "top 60, put text half way 60"
[23:28] <Raynerd> textRect.centery = (paddingh / 2)
[23:29] <Raynerd> textRect.centery = (paddingh * 2)
[23:29] <AbbyTheRat> mhm that's tells it where to put the code
[23:29] <AbbyTheRat> no
[23:29] <AbbyTheRat> wrong
[23:29] <AbbyTheRat> if you run that, you'll put the text into the grid
[23:29] <AbbyTheRat> XD
[23:29] <AbbyTheRat> try it! :P
[23:29] <AbbyTheRat> so you see what it does

[23:30] <Raynerd> Indeed it does, but the issue is here, I can`t SEE why!!
[23:30] <AbbyTheRat> but you made the change that caused it
[23:31] <AbbyTheRat> think of the position of the text being set in pixels
[23:31] <AbbyTheRat> let go with 30 pixels deep

[23:32] <AbbyTheRat> to tell the pygame to "place the text here" we give it an x and y co-oridate in pixels
[23:32] <Raynerd> I don`t rea what it is doing: centery ???
[23:32] <AbbyTheRat> nupe, you need to put it down a bit to avoid it falling off the screen
[23:32] <Raynerd> sure, make sense...
[23:33] <AbbyTheRat> I'm GUESSING, from the codes above it.. "center the text on the screen based on the width"
[23:33] * cccyRegeaneWolfe (~cccyRegea@210.23.18.116) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:33] <Raynerd> is that location based on the centre or one corner of the rectangle?

[23:34] <AbbyTheRat> so top left is 0 top, 0 width

[23:35] <AbbyTheRat> and do
[23:35] <AbbyTheRat> size = [screenw, screenh+paddingh * 2] on 53
[23:36] <AbbyTheRat> size is controlling the ACTUAL size of the screen, nothing on it :)

[23:46] <AbbyTheRat> how does it look when you take the margin out there, and add it to paddingh?
[23:46] <AbbyTheRat> hmm... no, that doesn't make sense
[23:46] <AbbyTheRat> hold on
[23:46] <AbbyTheRat> take margin out completely and what do you get?
[23:47] <AbbyTheRat> (as in, JUST for the height part of the screen, not width)

[23:49] <AbbyTheRat> still dropped down?
[23:49] <AbbyTheRat> NO?
[23:49] <Raynerd> Sorry, bottom is still bigger pad
[23:49] <nerdboy> new rpi images up: https://github.com/sarnold/meta-alt-desktop-extras/wiki
[23:50] <AbbyTheRat> how so? okie then does it look more even?
[23:51] <Raynerd> hum. perhaps a little
[23:51] <Raynerd> Its out by about the size of the top window message width
[23:52] <AbbyTheRat> humm.. send the updated codes ^^;
[23:52] <Raynerd> http://pastie.org/8992552
[23:53] <AbbyTheRat> Well the top is dropped down cause you still got it set to 60 instead of changing it back to 30

[23:57] <Raynerd> IO thought 60 was correct
[23:57] <AbbyTheRat> line 163
[23:58] <Raynerd> 30 for top, 30 bottom
[23:58] <AbbyTheRat> I'll explain that in a second
[23:58] <AbbyTheRat> but on line 163, change height to paddingh
[23:59] <AbbyTheRat> you'll need to add margin back into the code completely
[23:59] <Raynerd> on both
[23:59] <AbbyTheRat> now that I know exactly why the top and bottom was different
[23:59] <AbbyTheRat> no, just the last one
[23:59] * [Saint] (~saint@rockbox/staff/saint) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
