[9:37] <sflw> Basically I'm building an air monitoring station w/ net connectivity.
[9:37] * gbaman (~gbaman@host81-134-104-240.in-addr.btopenworld.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[9:37] <sflw> There's a sensor, a breadboard, and a microcontroller involved.
[9:37] <sflw> (And of course the Pi.)
[9:38] <sflw> Wondering if I should stick with the Pi or consider switching to Arduino?
[9:38] * RahulAN (~RahulAN@49.204.56.70) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[9:38] <ParkerR> Well if not the Pi you would need an ethernet/Wifi shield for the arduino
[9:39] <ParkerR> Which can cost more than the Pi
[9:40] <ParkerR> Techically you could write a computer side program to get the data from the arduino over USB
[9:40] <ParkerR> Either elimination the Pi
[9:40] <DrWhat> you can use both http://www.dexterindustries.com/Arduberry.html ^^
[9:40] <ParkerR> Or just using it for that purposde
[9:40] <ParkerR> *purpose
[9:41] <egradman> sflw: rpi is a great platform and its increasingly replacing my dependence on Arduino for many projects. And when I need something that only an Arduino can provide (A2D!) I can add that for pennies. You can't make an arduino talk to a network for less than the cost of a Pi and a USB wireless.
[9:41] * d3lphi (~d3lphi@HSI-KBW-095-208-048-171.hsi5.kabel-badenwuerttemberg.de) has left #raspberrypi
[9:41] * gbaman (~gbaman@host81-134-104-240.in-addr.btopenworld.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[9:41] <sflw> Gotcha, so net connectivity in my case basically demands a Pi or an expensive add-on to the Arduino.
[9:42] <ParkerR> egradman, you kinda can
[9:42] <sflw> I'll stick to my guns then.
[9:42] <ParkerR> Transferring data over serial on the USB bus
[9:42] <egradman> ParkerR, yeah I was about to reflect on that statement :)
[9:42] <ParkerR> So it can technically talk to the internet with just a compter or the Pi
[9:42] <sflw> I'll worry about splitting hairs when I have the knowledge to be that discerning. :P
[9:42] <sflw> For now it's enough for me that the Pi is fine for now.
[9:43] <sflw> Hello redundant statement statement.
[9:43] <egradman> Parker, sorry I was considering a standalone system comprised of an arduino, or of a pi.
[9:43] <LalaPlus> sflw: the addon for the arduino is cheap... http://www.benl.ebay.be/itm//151251024669
[9:43] <ParkerR> I use my Arduino to conenct my calculator to the internet :D https://mediacru.sh/e28234964edd
[9:43] <LalaPlus> clicked only randomly, probably better deal to be had, but already quite good
[9:43] <egradman> ParkerR: rad :)
[9:43] <ParkerR> LalaPlus, Ok on the expensive side I guess I was thinking of the wifi module
[9:44] <ParkerR> Glad to know the ethernet is cheap
[9:44] <sflw> ParkerR: That is awesome.
[9:44] <egradman> ParkerR: I see your calculator and raise you a TRS-80 :) http://www.gradman.com/archives/276
[9:44] <sflw> To think what kind of mischief I would have gotten into if my high school calculator could join IRC.
[9:44] * mpmc (mpmc@unaffiliated/mpmc) Quit (Quit: http://bnc4free.com/ !)
[9:44] <LalaPlus> ah yes wifi is more expensive
[9:44] <egradman> slfw: once, in high school I relied on my HP48 to connect to IRC over a modem.
[9:44] <ParkerR> egradman, :D neat

[9:47] <sflw> ;)
[9:47] <sflw> Okay one last question:
[9:48] * saedelaere (~quassel@unaffiliated/saedelaere) has joined #raspberrypi
[9:48] <sflw> I want to store the data output from my sensor in a file on the Pi but I'm also brand new to Linux and not sure how to go about piping the data from the serial port directly into a file. Mind pointing me in the right direction?
[9:48] <egradman> Have you programmed in any language?
[9:48] <LalaPlus> sflw: cat /dev/ttyAMA0 > /path/to/file
[9:49] <sflw> egradman: I've got a year in python and also learning from front-end web dev stuff (HTML/CSS/JS).
[9:49] <LalaPlus> you can configure the port with setserial command
[9:49] <egradman> great. you'll be able to use python to communicate with you sensor, no matter how its connected to the pi. you'll also be able to process that data in python, and write it to a file on the SD card.
[9:49] <sflw> LalaPlus: That's easy. I figured it would be. Also does the port need to be configured by default?
[9:50] <sflw> egradman: Good news.
[9:50] <LalaPlus> depends
[9:50] <LalaPlus> you probably want to disable the console running on it
[9:50] <LalaPlus> otherwise that may eat up the data from your sensor
[9:50] <sflw> The data is pretty easy to work with by default. Every second is outputs an integer that looks like this: :###;
[9:50] * jfrousval (~jfrousval@ARouen-651-1-396-96.w109-209.abo.wanadoo.fr) has joined #raspberrypi
[9:51] <sflw> The punctuation is used for error checking is the sensor spits out weird values (scripts knows to drop them) and for errors.
[9:51] <LalaPlus> to disable console, edit the file /etc/inittab and delete this line T0:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyAMA0 115200 vt100
[9:51] <sflw> Gosh I am redundant today.
[9:51] <LalaPlus> in /boot/cmdline.txt also delete console=ttyAMA0,115200 kgdboc=ttyAMA0,115200
[9:51] <sflw> Okay let me back you up here.
[9:51] <LalaPlus> what baud rate does the sensor use?
[9:52] <sflw> 2400
[9:52] <LalaPlus> then you need to set it
[9:52] <egradman> sflw, I'd highly recommend you do this from a simple python script rather than rely on in-built commands. You'll learn some programming skills that'll apply everywhere, rather than rpi/unix specific sysadmin stuff that won't transfer well.
[9:52] <sflw> egradman: That sounds like the path I'd like to take.
[9:53] <LalaPlus> Yes, that is even better, if you need to do something else in the future with it
[9:53] <LalaPlus> you still need to make the config file changes I said
[9:53] <egradman> you'll need the pyserial module to talk serial with the sensor.
[9:53] <LalaPlus> otherwise your data goes to getty instead of your python program
[9:53] <LalaPlus> well, not all data, but some so the output will be damaged
[9:53] <sflw> LalaPlus: Newb alert incoming. What is the console and why does it "eat up" the data from my sensor?
[9:54] <LalaPlus> the program getty presents a login prompt and shell on the serial port
[9:54] <egradman> sflw: just to be clear, what lalaplus is suggesting applies if you're using the UART on the 18 pin connector. it doesn't apply if your sensor is a USB device.
[9:54] <LalaPlus> ah it is a usb device?
[9:54] <LalaPlus> sorry...
[9:54] <sflw> I probably should have been more specific.
[9:54] <LalaPlus> then it doesnt matter
[9:54] <sflw> The sensor is not a USB device but it is hooked up to a serial adapter that lets me plug it into the USB port.
[9:54] <LalaPlus> it will also be /dev/ttyACM0 or /dev/ttyUSB0 instead of AMA0
[9:54] <sflw> It's ttyUSB0
[9:55] <sflw> Right now I just output the sensor directly to screen /dev/ttyUSB0 2400.
[9:55] <sflw> But all that does is let me watch the pretty numbers scrolls by. :P
[9:55] <egradman> very good. you're only a few lines away from processing that data intelligently. check out the docs for pyserial.

[10:56] <IVBaker> Hi all, I'm new in the rPI community and I have few questions about a build that I think could interest many people. I'm trying to build android on rPI. Recently broadcam the released the full documentation for the VideoCore IV graphics core, and a complete source release of the graphics stack
[10:56] <shiftplusone> #razdroid is the channel that deals with android (they don't have anything usable yet)
[10:56] <shiftplusone> but if you have any questions, shoot.

[11:03] <shiftplusone> yeah, that won't work. It expects certain things in /dev/ which it won't find.
[11:03] <shiftplusone> But anyway, I suggest you ask around in #razdroid.

[15:09] <amanone> Morning everyone -- I've an issue when I try to connect to my raspberrypi (default). I want it to be a wifi-AP.
[15:10] <darkavenger> is it possible to attach a power button to the pi? a button that halt/reset/power the os?
[15:10] <amanone> I compiled this driver: https://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=47716#p240781
[15:10] <amanone> I don't have anymore the IOCTL warning/error. but it didn't success to connect... http://amanone.fr/log.txt
[15:11] <amanone> here is my configuration (everything is default config... I have just remove ignore_broadcast_ssid) http://amanone.fr/hostapd.conf.txt
[15:11] <amanone> someone has any ideas? thanks

[15:12] <Matt> darkavenger: depending on your rev pi, there's a header you can use for a hardware reset switch
[15:13] <amanone> more information: the wifi adapter is a Wireless N 150 Pico USB Adapter (D-link)
[15:13] <pksato> darkavenger: some selling a psu with this function./
[15:13] <Matt> that's a hard reset tho, if you want something that'll do a clean shutdown and halt, you'd need to implement that with a gpio line and a switch
[15:14] <IT_Sean> It has been done
[15:14] <darkavenger> ok, so gpio line
[15:14] <darkavenger> thanks
[15:14] <Matt> IT_Sean: yup - not overly difficult

[15:14] <darkavenger> i'm googling
[15:14] <Matt> thing to remember is that once halted, you need to reset it to boot it back up

[15:17] <IT_Sean> Would then turn the Pi back on when flipped the other way
[15:17] <pksato> http://www.pi-supply.com/
[15:17] <Matt> have one button close the relay to power on the pi, then another button signal the pi via a gpio line and run a shutdown script
[15:18] <Matt> shutdown script could send send a signal to the circuit via a gpio line that'd open the relay again and cut power
[15:19] <Matt> hrm, ok, so I'd have to look at the schematic, but that looks like what I just described :)
[15:19] <Matt> said it wouldn't be hard
[15:21] <Matt> mmm, watchdog timer would be fun too
