[0:25] <rdbell> Has anyone gotten the Adafruit 2.8” TFT working wiht their Pi? I followed the guide at https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pitft-28-inch-resistive-touchscreen-display-raspberry-pi/software-installation but I’m only getting a white screen. I tried using Notro’s test tool (https://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=52359) and that works. So I know the hardware is fine.
[0:25] * samy^^ (~samy@namb.la) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:25] <rdbell> I’m assuming it’s some kind of issue with the kernel or drivers

[0:36] <shauno> rdbell: I have, but I'm not sure I can help much .. I just followed their instructions
[0:36] <rdbell> shauno Didn’t have any issues with the install? I think I might’ve figured it out; doing some testing right now.
[0:37] <shauno> not at all. went very smoothly on rasbian
[0:37] * leichtgewicht (~leichtgew@nttkyo358176.tkyo.nt.ngn.ppp.infoweb.ne.jp) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:37] * eao (~emanon@178.19.62.212) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:37] <rdbell> shauno I think dpkg refused to install the hacked bootloader the first time because it was conflicting with the bootloader that was already installed. I must’ve missed the error message the first time through.
[0:37] <rdbell> I just uninstalled the bootloader manually before installing the adafruit bootloader. I’ll see if it works now.
[0:38] <beaky> hello
[0:38] <beaky> does pyserial suport nonblocking read and write
[0:38] <rdbell> Yes, success! Got it working.
[0:38] <beaky> hello
[0:41] <shauno> heh, have fun. it's a neat little bit of kit. only slightly disappointed that some video libraries don't work with it

[3:27] <pepee> also, man grep
[3:27] <skybound5> will do
[3:27] <ShorTie> can i see your grep line ??
[3:28] <skybound5> sure.... cat /var/logs/kern.log | grep usb
[3:28] <skybound5> works on my other boxes just fine
[3:28] <skybound5> ubuntu
[3:28] <ShorTie> i normally use like'grep -ir 'whattosearchfor' wheretosearch
[3:28] <skybound5> I like to grep the output of certain logs with a pipe
[3:28] <pepee> I read somewhere that -a makes grep faster

[3:34] <skybound5> and the model B is plenty powerful for the intended use
[3:35] <skybound5> I'm still limping along on the model A :)

There's a python wrapper for the pulseaudio lib that can do it. I'm just going to play the sound on rpi and handle the sampling with an Arduino now though - bit of extra hardware, but should make it simpler :)
[8:32] <swiss> there should be a wrapper with alsa
[8:33] <Smashcat> swiss: Don't think so, for what I needed. Just seen people using pulseaudio for it last year.

[13:35] <lacrymology> I've got a little issue.. I've got only a 3G connection right now, I'd like to use my raspi as a 3G-wifi bridge/access point, but I've been reading and it looks like it's not trivial. Now the main problem seems to be that I may need to install some packages to make it connect through my USB 3G modem, so.. I need internet to be able to get internet..
[13:35] <lacrymology> main question: is there a way for me to install packages from my computer directly on the SD card? I run ubuntu, so it should not be impossible
[13:36] <lacrymology> Something short of chrooting to it would be ideal, I don't even know if chroot will work because the kernels won't be compatible
[13:38] <mfa298> I'm not sure how easy it would be install using the ubuntu machine, but it should be fairly easy to download the packages you need on the ubuntu machine, copy them to the pi and install on the pi
[13:38] <mfa298> you might just need to go through a few itterations like that to find all the dependancies
[13:39] <netzvieh> well depending on the packages you can usually inspect them to get the deps
[13:40] <netzvieh> if you are using raspbian, ubuntu's dpkg should be able to tell you what you'll need
[13:43] <lacrymology> and download them, too
[13:43] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable167.12-130-66.mc.videotron.ca) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[13:43] <lacrymology> yes, raspbian
[13:44] <shauno> lacrymology: try apt-get --print-uris install whatever (without sudo). I can't test it on rasbian right now, but it should work with recent versions of apt
[13:44] <lacrymology> I'm so cut off right now. I have no eth cable, no wifi dongle.. I was thinking of using my computer as a hotspot and connect to it from the raspi to install the necessary packages, but I need some extra hardware for that
[13:45] <lacrymology> shauno: from the raspi, you mean?
[13:45] * eatsomeatso (~eatsomeat@gateway/tor-sasl/eatsomeatso) has joined #raspberrypi
[13:45] <shauno> yeah. it'll act like it's doing to download packages, but then just print a list of uris instead
[13:46] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable167.12-130-66.mc.videotron.ca) has joined #raspberrypi
[13:47] <shauno> if that works, then something like apt-get -y --print-uris install whatever | awk '{print $1}' | grep http >afile.txt will give you a list of urls you can grap with wget -i afile.txt from another machine
[13:47] <ShorTie> a pi is not the optimal piece of equipment for a wifi bridge/access point, if there is gonna be much traffic
[13:48] * mimer (~Mimer@unaffiliated/mimer) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[13:50] <shauno> I used a pi as a 3g->lan gateway for a few weeks. it's not ideal, but it keeps up with 3g respectably (ie, 3.something mbit out of the dongle will limit you before the limitations of the chipset)
[13:51] <shauno> but I had it hanging off the wan port on my regular router, so it was only handling internet traffic, not crippling my whole lan
[13:51] <ShorTie> shauno, i don't think any url's you would get from ubuntu that way would be valid sources for the pi
[13:52] <shauno> ShorTie: I mean to run apt on the pi, so you have a list of the packages the pi would have fetched if it could have. and then use another machine to grab them
[13:52] <ShorTie> oh, ok, miss understood
[13:54] <shauno> then when you get home, stick the .deb's in /var/cache/apt/archives and install for real. it'll spot them as cache hits and install from there

[17:45] <gordonDrogon> indeed - yet another A20 with a layout to sort of match the Pi - intersting idea, but ...

[17:49] <SiC> haha
[17:50] * SiC imagines someone buying that thinking they are getting a banana pi
[17:50] <mfa298> I did see a forum post of someone asking about the PiCam on the bananaPi with the answer of it won't work (which I'm not surprised about)
[17:50] <SiC> the cameras arent that difficult to get working though, no?
[17:50] <SiC> just a case of setting the registers up over i2c with settings from omnivision
[17:50] <SpeedEvil> mfa298: no real reason it can't work
[17:50] <SiC> and then the data is blasted out
[17:50] <SpeedEvil> If it's got a CSI input
[17:50] <SiC> oh wait, picam is software?
[17:51] <SpeedEvil> And the I2C setup
[17:51] <SpeedEvil> If it's I2C
[17:51] <SpeedEvil> picam is the pi camera
[17:51] <SiC> ok
[17:51] <SiC> so yea, it shouldn't be too hard
[17:51] <mfa298> SpeedEvil: except they would need to obtain (or redo) all the hardwork done by broadcom and the foundation for the GPU/ISP side of gettign the camera to work.
[17:51] <SiC> GPU? it doesn't use the broadcom gpu
[17:52] <SpeedEvil> ''
[17:52] <SpeedEvil> The hard part of the Pi camera is the GPU firmware required - which is closed. Some other devices have the camera port openly described
[17:52] <SiC> I've used omnivision sensors in a previous job. Omnivision just give you a load of default settings that you load in and that work
[17:53] <SiC> the data then is just chucked out over a parallel bus
[17:53] <mfa298> my understanding is that there's a huge amount of processing in the GPU to get from the raw bayer data from the camera to something useful
[17:53] <SiC> we stuck that into a FIFO buffer IC and read it out on alternate frames
[17:53] <SpeedEvil> mfa298: Basically not.
[17:53] <SiC> nah
[17:53] <SiC> I've done it on a TI DSP
[17:53] <mfa298> and that work is all hidden in a firmware blob
[17:53] <SiC> its pretty easy to debayer an image
[17:54] <SpeedEvil> And many devices have custom units to do that
[17:54] <IT_Sean> blech! Cherry flavored tootsirolls are disgusting
[17:55] <mfa298> SpeedEvil, Sic: if it's that simple maybe you should talk to the guys at the foundation. My understanding from reading bits of the forum and bug reports is that a lot of work has gone into (and is still going into) the camera firmware.
[17:55] <SpeedEvil> mfa298: Well - yes.
[17:56] <SpeedEvil> mfa298: But on the pi, they are the only ones that can do this.
[17:56] <SpeedEvil> Because of the closed GPU.
[17:56] <SiC> the RPi is doing more than bringing the image in though, they're sticking it into hardware encoders
[17:56] <SpeedEvil> That too.
[17:56] <SiC> such as the mp4 & jpeg encoders
[17:56] <SiC> plus they'd need to optimise well it to get good speeds out
[17:57] <mfa298> SiC: which you have to do if you want any decent rate out of it. doing the processing in software will be slow - no chance of the 90fps that's possible with the right settings!
[17:57] <SiC> not everyone wants/needs 90fps though
[17:57] <SpeedEvil> Sometimes you just want an image, and don't much care if it's 90, or even 9fps
[17:57] <SiC> a 25fps stream is perfectly good enough
[17:58] <mfa298> SiC: well you can get the raw bayer data out from the camera - go play and produce a tool chain that can produce good quality images from that data - there's probably a few people that would find that useful
[17:59] <SiC> I'd love to but, time time time, I don't have enough :(
[17:59] <SpeedEvil> Going from bayer to rgb is not rocket science.
[17:59] <SpeedEvil> In many cases, you can massively cheat also.
[17:59] <SiC> but yes demosaicing/debayering isn't hard
[17:59] <SiC> there is plenty of algrothms about for it
[17:59] <SpeedEvil> Because the camera doesn't actually have the optical resolution to do proper pixel seperation
[17:59] <SpeedEvil> this helps massively in CPU usage.
[18:00] <SpeedEvil> With some cameras, it's reasonable to read them out as if they were a quarter of the resolution.
[18:00] <SpeedEvil> Because optically - they pretty much are.
[18:00] <mfa298> again from reading a fair bit about this subject it's not just de bayer, it's all the other processing needed to get a useful image.

[18:06] <SiC> I doubt that most of these cheap tablets with built in webcams are driven over USB
[18:06] <SiC> I bet they use CSI interfaces
[18:07] <SiC> the camera for the raspberry pi isn't any exotic type either
[18:08] <SiC> just a cheap omnivision sensor, that unsurprisingly is used in many other products - most notably in phones
[18:08] <mfa298> I would expect that they're using CSI but someone has probably done the work (potentially with closed information) to do that work. Which may not happen for the PiCam to work with the banana. They'll probably do there own camera board instead

[20:53] <shawnbon206_> i am going to put a pi lamp stack in my school connected to their network via wifi so computers in the computer lab can all access a wiki on it. i tested that already, the computers on the lan are able to talk to the computers on the wlan, at least on port 80. my question is, i will need ssh access from wan and for sure they have a firewall. i could possibly ask the IT department and they may accommodate me if I have a "saf
[20:54] <shawnbon206_> but if i can bypass the firewall in some other way i will do that instead
[20:55] <shawnbon206_> the reason for remote in is so i can work on the wiki when i am at home
[20:55] <gordonDrogon> if you can ssh out to e.g. a VPS then you can run a reverse ssh tunnel in. this probably violates all sorts of policys though.
[20:55] <shawnbon206_> wiki is for colaboration between students
[20:55] <johnc-> awwwww yiissssss: http://i.imgur.com/lGoFVSi.png my smart home UI is working :D
[20:56] <shawnbon206_> gordonDrogon: so if i can ssh out on say port 80 or 443?
[20:56] <gordonDrogon> I've no idea - ssh normally uses 22 - but if that's blocked and you have control over the far-end, you can pick what port you want.
[20:56] <gordonDrogon> providing the outbound firewall allows it.
[20:57] * Taylor (~Taylor@unaffiliated/taylor) has joined #raspberrypi

[20:59] <shawnbon206_> darn it
[21:00] <Benguin> Oh I'll test it for you what's yoru username, password and IP?~~
[21:00] <Benguin> Jk.
[21:01] <Benguin> Oh butt you can probably use ssh.serverdo.com if your phone plays friendly with ajax
[21:01] <Benguin> it uses port 80 to interact with a server that interacts with your ssh on whatever port you want
[21:01] <Benguin> butt it means you're trusting a 3rd party with your info
[21:01] <Benguin> I've had no issues though.

[23:23] <kevvlol> Hola, I just got my new TV in and have my pi running via hdmi, but my remote doesn't seem to be working with it. This tv is apparently supposed to have CEC capabilities but I can't really tell. Is there anything I should try before I find an alternative mode of input?
