[1:17] <mantazer> if i give my pi a domain using something like freeDNS, nothing will happen if i navigate to it via a web browser right (this is considering that my pi isnt running a web server and all that is enabled is ssh)
[1:17] <mantazer> ?
[1:19] <malfunct> that should be correct yet
[1:19] <malfunct> yes
[1:19] * thomasreggi (~thomasreg@cpe-24-193-253-240.nyc.res.rr.com) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[1:19] <malfunct> all a domain does is allow a "name" to be used in place o fthe ip
[1:20] <mantazer> malfunct: i see
[1:20] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable167.12-130-66.mc.videotron.ca) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:20] <malfunct> I have a dynamic dns domain that points to my home IP address
[1:21] <malfunct> I use it to connect to anything I have there for which I have ports forwarded
[1:21] * trisi (~trisi@216-67-53-42-rb1.sol.dsl.dynamic.acsalaska.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[1:21] <malfunct> if i wanted to serve web pages I'd just forward port 80 to a machine on my local network that has a web server listening on port 80
[1:23] * girafe (~girafe@ip-228.net-82-216-76.rev.numericable.fr) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[1:25] <mantazer> is a dns the same thing as a base url?

[1:27] <mantazer> malfunct: im trying to use namecheap's freeDNS service. when i type in myname.com it says its available, but when i navigate to myname.com in a browser, its clearly taken. am i misunderstanding something?
[1:28] <malfunct> if someone else is using the domain you can't use it
[1:29] <malfunct> I don't know how freeDNS is set up so I don't know what its actually telling you
[1:29] * jlf (~user@pdpc/supporter/active/jlf) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[1:30] * codehero (codehero@i.have.ipv6.on.coding4coffee.org) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:30] <malfunct> maybe "available" only means that the domain is not registered in thier name server, which is completely different than whether its registered at all
[1:30] <mantazer> malfunct: ok. i have a question about server setup and good design
[1:31] <mantazer> so if i have my pi running as a server that i can ssh into, and i want it to also act as a web server so it can serve my web page, should the dns be the same thing that i intend my website domain to be?
[1:31] * jlf (~user@pdpc/supporter/active/jlf) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:31] <mantazer> to clarify: the domain that points to my pi = the domain that points to the homepage?
[1:33] * hybr1d8 (~cjd@202.92.67.178) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[1:34] <malfunct> maybe, are you only going to have one domain hosted by the web server? or do you need to host multiple domains?
[1:35] * hybr1d8 (~cjd@202.92.67.178) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:35] <malfunct> ultimately you can point as many domains at the IP as you want, and depending on how you set up the web server config the domains can all point to one web root or to different web roots
[1:36] <malfunct> I think you are thinking that DNS does more than it actually does
[1:37] * fwg_ (~fwg@unaffiliated/frodenius) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:37] <malfunct> DNS is just a phone book, except instead of names and phone numbers it lists domain names and ip addresses
[1:37] <mantazer> malfunct: gotchya thanks
[1:38] <Triffid_Hunter> only trouble with virtual domains is when you want to do SSL. the cert has to list the domain it's for, but the cert is sent before the client tells you which domain it wants, so you either can only have one ssl domain, or you have to run ssl on non-standard ports
[1:39] * Arbos (~Arbos@unaffiliated/arbos) Quit (Quit: Arbos)
[1:40] <malfunct> Triffid_Hunter, true though can't you have a multi domain cert?
[1:40] * fwg (~fwg@unaffiliated/frodenius) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[1:40] <mantazer> another misunderstanding i have: DNS is different than registered domains?
[1:40] * Noldorin (~noldorin@unaffiliated/noldorin) Quit ()
[1:40] <malfunct> mantazer, maybe?
[1:40] <mantazer> because i have to pay for registered domains, but not for a free dns?
[1:40] <malfunct> mantazer, it depends on who is saying "registered domains"
[1:40] <malfunct> mantazer, and what they mean by it
[1:40] <malfunct> mantazer, also depends on what is meant by a "free dns"
[1:41] <codehero> ummm
[1:41] <malfunct> mantazer, which is all dependant on the services you are using, and doesn't have to follow any standard naming convention
[1:41] <codehero> you don't get the concept? do you?
[1:41] <codehero> the DNS is just the services
[1:41] * plugwash (~plugwash@97e5bfdf.skybroadband.com) has left #raspberrypi
[1:41] * trisi (~trisi@216-67-123-28.dynamic.cdma.acsalaska.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[1:41] <malfunct> usually a "registered domain" is a domain you have reigstered with a registrar, you would then need a domain name service to host the domain record that has the mapping of domain to ip
[1:42] <codehero> exactly
[1:42] <codehero> there's also opennic
[1:42] <malfunct> usually a "free dns" means you will get a sub-domain of a domain that the free dns service has registered
[1:42] <mantazer> malfunct: ok, so say i get a dns with the name: myname.com and that points to the ip of my raspi server. and that raspi server has a web server running on it that serves an index.html page. if i gave you that dns, you would be able to connect to it?
[1:43] <malfunct> mantazer, if you had everything in every various configuration necessary set up the right way then yes
[1:43] <codehero> which has different top-level domains that you can register for free. other people however have to use one of those opennic servers to access your site
[1:43] <codehero> mantazer: a domain
[1:43] <codehero> not a dns
[1:43] <codehero> dns is just the protocol (or service)
[1:43] <malfunct> codehero, I am excusing that misconception because even people in the industry use the terms interchangably
[1:43] * Noldorin (~noldorin@unaffiliated/noldorin) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:43] * trisi (~trisi@66-230-113-118-rb1.sol.dsl.dynamic.acsalaska.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:43] <codehero> really?
[1:44] <codehero> that's horrible
[1:44] <malfunct> codehero, yeah, they are pretty sloppy about it :)
[1:44] <mantazer> malfunct: so whats the point of registering with a registrar if all anyone needs is the dns that maps to the ip of the server?
[1:44] <codehero> dns is sort of a monopoly
[1:45] <malfunct> mantazer, because if you aren't registered with the registrar then noone would know what server to ask for the details
[1:45] <mantazer> oh nvm
[1:45] <mantazer> i understand
[1:45] <codehero> or better. there's a monopoly on dns
[1:45] <mantazer> actually i take that back
[1:45] <codehero> all the dns server does is give the ip to a requesting client
[1:45] <codehero> so you type in a url in your browser
[1:46] <mantazer> codehero: and isnt that all a client needs?
[1:46] <malfunct> when a dns request goes out it happens like this: your computer asks your ISP to tell you the IP for a domain, your ISP doesn't know so it asks its authority, its authority (or some parent of) eventually asks a root domain server (owned by registrar) who says "go ask this nameserver" which is the nameserver you set up with all the info
[1:46] <codehero> your os will send a request to the dns server you're connecting to
[1:46] <mantazer> the ip?
[1:46] <codehero> and the dns sends the ip back to you
[1:46] <malfunct> that reply from your nameserver goes all the way back to your computer unwinding the stack of requests that was created
[1:46] <codehero> yeah, the ip is all it needs
[1:46] <codehero> dns is pretty fucked up
[1:46] <codehero> actually
[1:47] <malfunct> if you didn't register a domain there would be no way for a random computer to know where to ask for specific info
[1:47] <codehero> huh. i'm on #raspberrypi
[1:47] <codehero> didn't notice that :D
[1:47] * hgross_ (~heNNa-@95-88-197-56-dynip.superkabel.de) Quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[1:47] <malfunct> codehero, DNS is actually beautiful because of its simplicity. the simplicity gives it lots of power within its small scope
[1:47] <codehero> i actually mean the way it's managed
[1:48] <malfunct> well yeah, but its not nearly as bad as it could be
[1:48] * tegila (~tegila@189-015-164-235.xd-dynamic.ctbcnetsuper.com.br) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:48] <malfunct> I mean between all the registarars everyone knows who to ask for what info
[1:48] <codehero> dns is super centralized
[1:48] <malfunct> it kind of has to be don't you think?
[1:48] <malfunct> someone has to be an authority
[1:48] <malfunct> otherwise every dns could give a different answer
[1:48] * tom-x (~textual@67-61-205-118.cpe.cableone.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:49] <malfunct> (well they still "can" but they don't)
[1:49] <codehero> malfunct: well. there's p2p solutions that actually do it quite well
[1:49] <mantazer> malfunct, codehero: thanks for putting up with me. this is all very helpful. So if I'm understanding correctly, Namecheap is a registrar. They have a service called FreeDNS that will map my server's ip to a domain. now that the domain is registered, it is accessible to external users via the domain that i chose. But if there is no web server on the pi that is serving files, there will be no response when users navigate to it vi
[1:49] <malfunct> mantazer, close enough I suppose
[1:50] <codehero> yupp
[1:50] * tegila (~tegila@189-015-164-235.xd-dynamic.ctbcnetsuper.com.br) Quit (Client Quit)
[1:50] <codehero> close enough
[1:50] <codehero> malfunct: take a look at namecoin
[1:50] <codehero> it has it's issues
[1:50] <malfunct> codehero, I'll have to when I have time\
[1:50] <codehero> but it's a nice concept
[1:50] <malfunct> codehero, I have no idea when I'll have time
[1:50] <codehero> heh
[1:50] <codehero> a common issue
[1:50] <malfunct> codehero, I do enough DNS stuff at work that when I go home its the last thing I want to think about
[1:50] <codehero> ah, okay
[1:51] <codehero> mantazer: there's also afraid.org https://freedns.afraid.org/
[1:51] <malfunct> my day job is testing software that tries to make F5 bi ip devices easier for non-experts to configure
[1:51] <codehero> i don't even know what that is
[1:52] <mantazer> codehero: i saw that, it gives you a subdomain though. from what i see at namecheap, there is no subdomain
[1:52] <codehero> wait what?
[1:52] * cceleri (~cceleri@gateway/tor-sasl/cceleri) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)

[1:52] <codehero> but that's not free, is it?
[1:52] <mantazer> it is
[1:52] <codehero> oO
[1:52] <malfunct> codehero, I think they may host your domain for free if you have already registered it
[1:52] <codehero> ohhhh
[1:52] <mantazer> codehero: https://www.namecheap.com/domains/freedns.aspx
[1:52] <malfunct> codehero, it doesn't cost them any more to host your domain than to host a subdomain of thiers
[1:53] <codehero> well, yeah. afraid.org has the same
[1:53] <codehero> if you're using your own domain
[1:53] <codehero> thought you were getting a subdomain
[1:54] <malfunct> for my own personal use I prefer to do all of my name hosting at my web host (easy enough interface and I can just point all of my domains at it) and then cname it over to dyndns for the dynamic endpoints that I have

[8:40] <shiftplusone> who cares what happens on reboot
[8:40] <astronut> shiftplusone: well, i was planning on using it as a GPIO input pin for a sensor, i'm worried that forcing that high might short out the sensor

[8:41] <astronut> shiftplusone: the adafruit flow sensor
[8:42] <shiftplusone> no matter what pin you choose, you shouldn't assume any particular state at reboot. They 'should' go into input mode, but who knows...
[8:42] <astronut> i guess that's fair
[8:42] <shiftplusone> Is it this thing? https://www.adafruit.com/products/828

[8:45] <astronut> err, adafruit didn't say explicitly, but their project using it shows it being connected directly
[8:45] <shiftplusone> 'works' and actually being the right way to do something are quite different.

[8:48] <shiftplusone> The way I understand the construction is that the having the output driven high externally wouldn't be a big deal, but I agree that it's better to use another pin, just in case.
[8:49] <astronut> shiftplusone: thanks. i might try it out

[12:18] <Darkwell> another thing I want to check im not a debian expert, so dont really know where to fix/look for the prob ; put a script in /etc/network/if-up.d to start znc and other services as soon as the rpi is up on ethernet
[12:18] <Darkwell> problem is that the scripts are run twice and i dont know why

[14:03] <shiftplusone> Haven't seen them freeze for no reason. Any chance that the voltage has dips which the DMM doesn't pick up? I'd also try with different combinations of USB devices plugged in and see if there's anything in specific that makes it freeze. Aside from power issues, it might be worth upgrading or downgrading the firmware.

[14:11] <rambabu> btw, what do you meaning by upgrading the firmware?
[14:11] <shiftplusone> it's not THAT bad, but it's certainly indicates a problem.
[14:11] <shiftplusone> bootcode.bin start.elf, the kernel and all of that
[14:12] <shiftplusone> this https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/tree/master/boot
[14:12] <rambabu> thanks, will check it out.
[14:12] <shiftplusone> rpi-update can pull in all of the required files, including userspace stuff, to make sure the versions of all components match

[14:14] <shiftplusone> some people run rpi-update just for the hell of it, without really knowing what it's doing.
[14:15] <rambabu> I see, I have never run it on the pi. I was expecting apt to the one thing for updating the pi.

[21:01] <Darkwell> if youw ant to do other than talk to the xinorf or rfu328 you need this :
[21:01] <M3mphiZ> Hi everyone, I'm trying to cross compile the rpi 3.8 kernel for my pi. I'm using this guide: http://elinux.org/RPi_Kernel_Compilation#Get_the_kernel_source. [21:05] <Darkwell> then you can send same signals with the tellstick

[21:05] <Numline1> So no wireless is needed
[21:05] <Darkwell> the sliice of radio is a bit more work to deal with
[21:06] * divine (~divine@12.185.22.253) has joined #raspberrypi

[21:07] <Numline1> sure, we'll make it isolated and safe
[21:07] <Numline1> I agree to these terms and conditions :)
[21:08] * marcdel (~marcdel@96.44.136.136) Quit ()
[21:08] <Darkwell> what you need is wiringpi on your rpi
[21:08] <Numline1> also, if we cut the modem cable, it's after the adapter part, so there shouldn't be more than few volts
[21:08] <Darkwell> or smoething to program the gpio on the rpi

[21:09] <Darkwell> yea
[21:09] <Numline1> anything specific? I'm not really experienced in this HW part
[21:09] <Darkwell> layada also provides breakout kit for breadboards use if you want ( optional)

[21:14] <Darkwell> the module has protection for backwards current
[21:14] <Numline1> ok, so just to recap if I understand correctly in a nutshell:
[21:14] <Numline1> I need same voltage as goes to modem to power it up
[21:15] <Numline1> so if it's 12V, I'll need that thing in link for 12V
[21:15] <Numline1> I connect it, 12V to 12V, G to G
[21:15] <Numline1> and then connect one pin from RBP which will break the circuit or activate it?

[21:23] <Darkwell> no modem needed
[21:23] <Darkwell> just put 5v gnd and io pin ( datapin ) put io pin high and the relay fires up

[22:40] <simp> atleast if you live in the 3D world :)
[22:40] <IT_Sean> It's pretty darn close
[22:41] <IT_Sean> really? are we going to be THAT pedantic?
[22:41] <simp> it's close yes, it's just something that's been inside me for a while. It was time to spurt it out
[22:42] <simp> and to be honest, i've got a few because of the size as well :)
[22:42] <shauno> I really wish they'd move the headphone & composite ports to headers; that'd bring it a nice step closer to CC-sized
[22:42] <Encrypt> simp, The projection of a RPi in the 2D world is a creadit card ! =D
[22:42] <Encrypt> credit*
[22:43] <IT_Sean> shauno: then you would need bulky adapters. By using the ports themselves, people can use existing cables.

[22:44] <simp> well if you don't need the headers you can just desolder them
