[1:20] <Mixxit> nice job!
[1:21] * Brod (~Brod@foresh2.lnk.telstra.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:21] <JeffUK> Using my pi to take photos, but the tools I had at my disposal make it quite a convoluted process....
[1:22] <Brod> what you using?
[1:22] * lupinedk is now known as Lupinedk
[1:23] <Mixxit> a lemming, a hosepipe, one shoe and a vic 20
[1:23] <JeffUK> WELL....
[1:24] * tegila (~tegila@189-041-125-242.xd-dynamic.ctbcnetsuper.com.br) Quit (Quit: tegila)
[1:24] <JeffUK> The Webserver sends the Pi a message to take the photo... the PI sends 3 Volts to one GPIO pin (connected to the camera) to focus, another to take the photo. The photo gets saved to a WIFI capable SD card. THe card sends the path of the image to the pi over wifi, the pi downloads the image from the SD card, FTPs it to the webserver, and displays it on the screen
[1:25] <Mixxit> wifi sd card?
[1:25] <Brod> ohh thats a good one, great work!
[1:25] <JeffUK> Yeah, SD card with a built in WIFI reciever... very awesome.
[1:25] <Mixxit> ooo
[1:26] <JeffUK> the best thing is, they run linux...
[1:26] <Brod> how big is your wifi sd?
[1:26] <Brod> as in capacity
[1:26] * pitelpan (~panagioti@unaffiliated/pitelpan) Quit (Quit: ZNC - http://znc.in)

[1:27] <JeffUK> it's one of these http://haxit.blogspot.ch/2013/08/hacking-transcend-wifi-sd-cards.html
[1:28] <JeffUK> the alpha prototype is here http://www.jeffsergeant.co.uk/pi/pi.html :) I call it selfiecam right now
[1:28] * FREDR1K (~gaahl@h112n3-aepv-a31.ias.bredband.telia.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[1:28] <Mixxit> nice!
[1:29] * RaptorJesus (~RaptorJes@gateway/tor-sasl/raptorjesus) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[1:30] <JeffUK> so.. it's basically a 12 megapixel webcam, I'm going to train it on my chicken coop via a telephoto lens so I can watch my chickens when I'm working away from home :)
[1:30] <Brod> that blog post is pretty sweet, never thought to hack one
[1:31] <JeffUK> Yeah, it's very neat. My setup doesnt' actually require any hacking of the SD card, I'm using a few undocumented features but haven't modified it.
[1:32] <JeffUK> I've done a few timelapses, it's very useful to not have to remove the SD card to view the photos..
[1:33] * FREDR1K (~gaahl@h112n3-aepv-a31.ias.bredband.telia.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:33] <Brod> hmmm, is there a documented way to upload to the sd card?
[1:34] * BCMM (~BCMM@unaffiliated/bcmm) Quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
[1:34] <Brod> I bet it is
[1:35] * osxdude|MBP (~osxdude@unaffiliated/osxdude) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:37] <JeffUK> Don't think it supports sending anything to the card remotely... but it's trivial to get root on it and run pretty much anything you want... you could probably set up an FTP server on it
[1:39] <JeffUK> I have filled a page in a notepad with possible uses for it. You could do real-time image manipulation, encryption, all sorts...
[1:43] * vifino (~vifino@ip-176-198-144-221.unitymediagroup.de) Quit (Quit: Ze Cat now leaves...)
[1:43] <Brod> yeah, I'd be interested to try and build a 'powered' sd card hub. like a usb wall adapter but for sd card's, then let it run a few automated bit's n pieces
[1:43] <Brod> it's a weird combination of technologies

[4:47] <petecouture> lol autoclean actually used up more space hah
[4:48] <[Saint]> That's not actually possible...

[4:50] <[Saint]> If you're space constrained, Raspbian isn't the friendliest distribution, IMO.
[4:50] <petecouture> I'm just being OCD
[4:50] <petecouture> trying to update everything
[4:51] <[Saint]> Right, and the point I'm trying to make is that a very large part of "everything" you'll almost certainly never actually use.
[4:51] <[Saint]> Rasbian is primarily an educational distro, so it comes with a craptonne of things Average Joe doesn't need or care about.
[4:53] <[Saint]> Normally, people wouldn't care about this, since sd storage is foolishly cheap.
[4:53] <[Saint]> But, if you have only a tiny sdcard...you need to make choices.
[4:54] <petecouture> gotcha
[4:55] <[Saint]> Realistically, all you need to do is copy the / partition to the external drive and then adjust the config to point to the new / location.
[4:55] <pksato> 2GB sd card?
[4:55] <petecouture> That's what I assumed by the external drive is a flaoter
[4:55] <petecouture> so it won't always been attached to the raspi
[4:55] <petecouture> I used this thing for TV but it's also my drone controller
[4:56] <[Saint]> Ahhh...that's unfortunate.
[4:56] <[Saint]> I'm pretty sure raspbian has required a 4GB card for quite a while now.
[4:56] <petecouture> No it's 4GB
[4:56] <petecouture> I just installed a bittorrent client
[4:56] <petecouture> I think that hogged a lot
[4:56] <pksato> ah...
[4:57] <[Saint]> If you have a USB thumb drive laying around, you could also use that.
[4:57] <pksato> use usb storage to store you downloaded files.
[4:58] <petecouture> Hmm
[4:58] <[Saint]> Even if he did, raspbian still doesn't leave much room for growth on a 4GB card IIRC.
[4:58] <[Saint]> That takes care of user files, but if the system needs to update - same story.
[4:58] <petecouture> I thnk they are shipping with 8GB cards these days aren't they
[4:59] <[Saint]> Nothing will "fix" this short of giving the OS more room, or, changing the OS to one that isn't so bloated.
[4:59] <[Saint]> I shouldn't say bloated...but, well, it kinda is.

[6:45] <Triffid_Hunter> asdsad: rpi can't do hard realtime GPIO, so either the IR module has a usb port or you'll need an arduino or similar to read the signals

[6:50] <Triffid_Hunter> asdsad: that's what usb hubs are for
[6:51] <[Saint]> Good luck living your day to day life without China.
[6:51] <duderman> saint wouldn't be so hard
[6:51] <[Saint]> Like, really...good luck.
[6:51] <duderman> i could do that easily if i didn't have to make money.
[6:51] <[Saint]> This idea that China == poor quality has to stop.
[6:51] <[Saint]> Its absurd.
[6:52] <[Saint]> Many countries make just as shit, or even shittier, products.
[6:52] <duderman> that's true saint but they do it for practical wages.
[6:52] <duderman> and can live in their own houses, and don't have to sleep on the converyer belts every night.
[6:52] <duderman> china is death.
[6:52] <duderman> china is everything that can go wrong all at once.
[6:52] <[Saint]> Saying this is the case for all of China is just as absurd.
[6:52] <duderman> It isn't that way in Hong Kong
[6:53] <duderman> most chinese want to flee to hong kong because the communist party doesn't fuck with it
[6:53] <[Saint]> Bad things happen. Everywhere.
[6:53] <duderman> not like they do in china
[6:53] <duderman> back to the pies.
[6:54] <duderman> you know i had an idea for something similar to the pi, except it would be 100% FPGA including the graphics and sound chips.
[6:54] <[Saint]> Yay! Western-esque brainwashing...wooo!
[6:54] <duderman> but they wouldn't have those NSA backdoors in them because I'd design the FPGA from scratch.
[6:54] <petecouture> Bag things Mikey bad things!

[7:15] <[Saint]> timmmaaaayyy: what part exactly, are you having issue(s) with?
[7:15] <timmmaaaayyy> it boots up, but most of the systems are greyed out....there are no games at all. i feel like its missing something
[7:15] <timmmaaaayyy> and i can't find my way through the forums either. like i feel like i'm missing something huge
[7:16] <[Saint]> It doesn't come with any games, IIRC.
[7:16] <[Saint]> Doing so would be a rather large mess for licensing and land people in a lot of hot water.
[7:16] <[Saint]> Game ROMs are uploaded via the web portal.

[12:01] <gordonDrogon> you can get up to 98MB/sec into or out of the Pi.
[12:01] <gordonDrogon> via the Ethernet - but a lot will depend on what else you are doing.
[12:01] <Yokish0> wow! srry, bittorrent client
[12:01] <gordonDrogon> e.g. SD card reads aren't going to be more than 20MB/sec.
[12:02] <gordonDrogon> hang on - confising my units there.
[12:02] <gordonDrogon> 100M bits/sec is 10M Bytes/sec.
[12:02] <Yokish0> uhms, but if you use a usb, happens too?
[12:02] <gordonDrogon> using e.g. iperf, you'll see 95Mbits/sec in or out of the Pi.
[12:03] <gordonDrogon> but adding to that - encryption or SD card read / writes then it may well be slower.

[15:44] <Encrypt> Neutron6, I mean, you have tour emitter connected through the USB port
[15:44] <Neutron6> yeah the pi may be too high power
[15:45] <Encrypt> I imagine it will communicate a few seconds every hour
[15:45] <Encrypt> However, as long as it is plugged on the USB port, it will waste power

[18:37] <Muchoz> How long does it take for Imgburner on Windows to flash Raspbian to an SD card?
[18:37] <nsgn> well, i've got an odd situation. i am locked out of my pi. i wrote a script and set it to run on login and that is all fine except i have a bug in it..and it captures all keyboard input so it wont accept a ctrl c or ctrl z.
[18:37] * utack (~utack@mnch-5d87a374.pool.mediaWays.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[18:37] <nsgn> i CAN use ctrl alt f2 to go to a second console..except i dont get a shell on that console. any idea why?
[18:37] <Muchoz> nsgn, can you use SSH?
[18:37] <nsgn> i set this up a while back and apparently didnt enable ssh
[18:38] <Muchoz> Then you might be f*
[18:38] <nsgn> its a project i did about a year ago and it quit doing its dedicated job so i've thrown the pi on the bench here to figure out why. i find the script boots and fails in such a way it blocks ctrl c and ctrl z
[18:38] <nsgn> but i'm most dumbfounded by the lack of ability to get a useful second console on ctrl alt f2
[18:38] <nsgn> it actually switches
[18:38] <nsgn> but i just get a blinking cursor. no shell
[18:39] <Muchoz> Can't you try to put the SD card in something else and try the remove the file one way or another?
[18:39] <nsgn> Muchoz, yeah, i guess i could mount the card to another pi with a sd card reader and manipulate it that way
[18:40] <nsgn> but my primary curiosity/bother at this point is..why on earth do my second (and third, etc) consoles not work. it switches to them but its nothing but a blinking cursor and it takes no input
[18:40] <Muchoz> nsgn, if you're just putting it in another pi it will do the exact same thing..
[18:40] <nsgn> Muchoz, thus the sd card reader part :)
[18:40] <Muchoz> You mean SD card to USB?
[18:40] <nsgn> yes. i just dont have a linux box on this bench so i'd use another pi as that
[18:40] <Muchoz> You could also just use a normal PC.
[18:41] <nsgn> last time i tried to get windows to handle a linux filesystem it was more of a pain than it seemed worth
[18:41] <Muchoz> There might be some software out there
[18:41] <nsgn> the only full PCs on my workbench at this time are windows. all the linux is on Pis, of which i have several sitting around. i'd just use a USB card reader on one of those
[18:41] <Muchoz> Then do so
[18:42] <nsgn> i will. before i did so i just wanted to ensure i wasnt doing/missing something stupid that was keeping me from using ctrl alt f2 in a useful manner

[19:32] <causality> are we talking like 250+ torrent peers or something
[19:32] <IT_Sean> whiskers75, You are using your raspi as a router? THat's never gonna be fast once you have a bunch of concurrent connections.
[19:32] <whiskers75> causality: no, like 50 concurrent tabs open or something?
[19:33] <whiskers75> IT_Sean: I'm thinking about using the actual router as a router again :P
[19:33] <whiskers75> oh, but then my IP'll change
[19:34] <IT_Sean> Remember that the onboard ethernet is a SUB device, so.... if you have a 2nd USB nic on there, both are on the same USB bus. So, too much traffic through there is gonna slow things down.,
[19:34] <whiskers75> IT_Sean: yeah :/
[19:34] <whiskers75> any way to remedy?
[19:35] <IT_Sean> Well, not really... no matter how you slice it, you are still trying to shove a lot of stuff through a small hole.
