[1:53] <[Saint]> "yawn".
[1:54] <[Saint]> Oh, and, four more words:
[1:54] * Willchill (~Willchill@CPE-121-219-8-167.lnse1.lon.bigpond.net.au) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)

[1:54] <[Saint]> "where's my damn Nexus?"
[1:55] <[Saint]> I can run the dev preview on my N5 tomorrow, but, dammit, I wanted new (handset) hardware.

[1:59] <[Saint]> And they updated their design guidelines.
[2:00] <[Saint]> "New and improved design guidelines for developers to ignore!"

[2:10] <hinderaker> :p
[2:11] <binaryhermit> [Saint]: I'd think this is a bit early for a new nexus phone, especially with the rumors that the nexus line is dead
[2:12] * halabund_ (~halabund@unaffiliated/halabund) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:12] <[Saint]> I don't care about a new Nexus necessarily (and, its not particularly early, but, hey), but the announcement of an Adnroid release has typically always come with a new handset.
[2:13] <binaryhermit> since the Nexus devices, other than the nexus one, have come out q4
[2:13] <[Saint]> I think this is the first time in Google/Android history a major release hasn't had a flagship handset launched with it.
[2:13] <[Saint]> Be it Nexii, or Android Silver, I care not.
[2:13] <[Saint]> I'm just gimped about having to wait until...whever.
[2:13] <[Saint]> I want a new phone, dammit!
[2:14] <halabund_> Is there anyone around who’s used minidlna? Is it possible to use a media library located on a read-only file system? (It’s NTFS)
[2:14] * vcolombo_ (~vcolombo@38.106.143.234) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:14] <binaryhermit> I'm guessing that there could be a hardware release at the same time as Android (insert code name that starts with a l here
[2:14] * binaryhermit shuts up
[2:14] <[Saint]> There's expected to be one, yes. That's well known.
[2:15] <[Saint]> But, it won't be a handset.
[2:15] <[Saint]> Another giant fondleslab.
[2:15] <[Saint]> And, I'm personally sick of fondleslabs.
[2:16] <binaryhermit> considering that I'm guessing they won't release L until q4 (they didn't announce when, did they?)
[2:16] <[Saint]> Beginning Fall
[2:16] <[Saint]> (US Fall)
[2:16] <[Saint]> I guess I didn't need to say that, "proper" people call it Autumn.
[2:16] <[Saint]> ;)
[2:17] * heathkid (~heathkid@unaffiliated/heathkid) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:17] <[Saint]> But, anyhoo, if anyone is developing a handset, they have managed to keep the rumour mill at bay in absolutely unprecidented ways we've never seen before.
[2:17] * vcolombo (~vcolombo@cip-248.trustwave.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
[2:17] <binaryhermit> the beginning of fall, or some date located between late september and late december?
[2:17] <[Saint]> And I sincerely doubt Google or any other manufacturer is capable of doing that.
[2:18] <binaryhermit> LG said they're not doing any nexus devices currently
[2:18] <[Saint]> We *always* know about the new HW coming up, its too easy to watch for it.
[2:18] <[Saint]> They can't really hide it from the mildly determined, not for too long, anyway.
[2:18] * vcolombo_ (~vcolombo@38.106.143.234) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[2:18] * Simon14 (~chatzilla@unaffiliated/simont) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:18] <binaryhermit> the rumor mill didn't get going for the nexus 5 until after this point
[2:19] <binaryhermit> who knows, maybe they'll make an android-enabled raspberry pi?
[2:20] * nplus (~chatzilla@unaffiliated/simont) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[2:20] * Simon14 is now known as nplus
[2:20] <[Saint]> I...what?
[2:20] <[Saint]> The N5 was *no* secret, by any means.
[2:20] <binaryhermit> (kidding, I can't imagine a raspberry pi has the hardware necessary for a pleasant android experience without significant aftermarket stuff
[2:20] <[Saint]> But I guess I have the right friends...
[2:20] <[Saint]> Also, the raspi is *perfectly* capable of running KK+
[2:21] <binaryhermit> I never said it was a secret
[2:21] * Vialas (~Vialas@14-203-235-228.static.tpgi.com.au) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:21] <[Saint]> The raspi HW could provide an absolutely seamless KK experience.
[2:21] <binaryhermit> [Saint]: except for the whole lack of a touchscreen while apps expect a touchscreen part that might impair the experience a bit
[2:21] <[Saint]> Android really isn't that demanding.
[2:21] <[Saint]> Apps that expect a touchscreen are broken by design.
[2:22] <[Saint]> Android != touch.
[2:22] * scarolan (~seancarol@64.125.69.200) Quit (Quit: leaving)
[2:23] <hinderaker> I am using screen+irssi (RPi) through terminal on my iMac. I have around 64% CPU load where irssi is the biggest one with 17,5% (in 23 big channels). My question is: Why does it feel laggy (stuttering, delay on channel join/switch window).
[2:23] <[Saint]> People seem to forget how much of a beast that GPU in the pi really is I think.
[2:23] <hinderaker> RPi is connected to a 25/25 mbps internet connection (wired) and my iMac is on the same LAN (wirelessly).
[2:23] <plugwash_> The fact that google themselves don't put andriod on their arm laptops says a lot IMO
[2:24] <binaryhermit> hinderaker: how does your CPU usage look?
[2:24] <binaryhermit> err, RAM usage
[2:24] <[Saint]> Well, I'll say that I run 4.4.4 on an ARMv6 device, and the UI maintains 60fps easily.
[2:24] <[Saint]> It even has *less* RAM and CPU than the pi does.
[2:24] <[Saint]> And nowhere near as capable a GPU.
[2:25] <hinderaker> binaryhermit: RAM is good, only 20% used
[2:25] <binaryhermit> there goes my theory
[2:25] <plugwash_> AIUI the main stubling point for andriod on the Pi is that noone has integrated andriod with the broadcom GPU stuff
[2:25] <[Saint]> Its possible, but, the *why* is...anyone noticed everyone shifting away from ARM lately?
[2:25] <[Saint]> plugwash_: Broadcom has.
[2:25] <[Saint]> But, they aint sharing.
[2:25] * plugwash_ should add "and released it"
[2:25] <[Saint]> :)
[2:26] * plugwash_ hasn't really noticed a shift away from arm
[2:26] <hinderaker> Pinging myself gives me a result of 3,2 sec
[2:26] <hinderaker> Which is ... bothering :)
[2:28] <[Saint]> What's bothering, is locales that use a comma as a decimal point. :)
[2:28] * CarryA1911 (~galt@unaffiliated/carrya1911) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:28] <[Saint]> No! BAd locale, no!
[2:28] <binaryhermit> hinderaker: your ping is a bit high
[2:28] * binaryhermit pinged his IP from the command line
[2:28] <plugwash_> yeah, such locales tend to expose bad software that uses internationalised conversions where it shouldn't
[2:29] <binaryhermit> but, like 160 ms
[2:29] <[Saint]> Man, I ping myself and get 18ms
[2:29] <hinderaker> There you go :)
[2:29] <plugwash_> though what is equally annoying is when germans writing text in english use german decimal seperators, it's an english document use english conventions damnit
[2:30] <hinderaker> 160 ms across the world I can probably live with, 3200ms pinging myself is ...
[2:30] <[Saint]> traceroute it, how many hops is it?
[2:30] <[Saint]> machine, router, ten billion hops, ISP, ten billion more hops, back to you, ...or something.
[2:31] <hinderaker> Are you saying switching windows in irssi should take 3,2sec if hosted on the RPi?
[2:32] <[Saint]> I...what? No.
[2:33] <binaryhermit> what would irssi do on a really congested link? Would it use a lot of CPU?
[2:36] <hinderaker> Only god knows.
[2:36] <binaryhermit> hinderaker: what OS are you using?
[2:37] * binaryhermit guesses something without HF support
[2:40] <hinderaker> on the rpi?
[2:40] * lansiir is now known as oldtopman
[2:40] <hinderaker> raspbian
[2:40] <hinderaker> my iMac is running Maverick 10.9.3
[2:40] <binaryhermit> ok, scratch that thought
[2:40] <[Saint]> Must not make iHardware cracks.
[2:40] * osxdude|MBP (~osxdude@unaffiliated/osxdude) Quit (Quit: Smell ya later. Time to sleep. Hold the phone. Don't dial the emergency number.)
[2:40] <hinderaker> Hehe. Don't you dare!
[2:41] <[Saint]> (admittedly, the HW is fine, SW, however...)
[2:41] <binaryhermit> \I'd argue the HW is incredibly overpriced
[2:43] <hinderaker> You wouldn't be wrong, sort of.
[2:43] <binaryhermit> ok, after checking the channel rules carefully, you're using Sarah Palin's favorite OSX version
[2:44] <plugwash_> The hardware is not too bad for what you get, it's just that what you get is strange
[2:45] <plugwash_> *not too badly priced for what you get
[2:45] <plugwash_> so typically to fill a set of requirements you end up spending a lot more
[2:45] <binaryhermit> who is a former vice presidential candidate who made a big deal about how her (and her running mate, John McCain) were mavericks
[2:48] <binaryhermit> anyway, moving on from my somewhat ill-advised crack at a political figure...
[2:48] * Portugol9 (~Portugol9@unaffiliated/portugol9) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[2:50] <binaryhermit> err, probably should say former political figure
[2:50] * cndiv (~cndiv@wikimedia/cdeubner) Quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[2:51] <[Saint]> s/figure/puppet and/or scapegoat/
[2:52] <binaryhermit> whatever word floats your boat
[2:58] * hennie (~quassel@c-24-1-53-89.hsd1.il.comcast.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[3:01] <CarryA1911> noob question time: Do you shut down your rpi, or just yank the power?
[3:02] <[Saint]> Never, ever, ever, do the latter.
[3:02] <[Saint]> If you like having an intact filesystem, that is.
[3:02] <CarryA1911> hehe i would prefer everything intact :)
[3:02] * plugwash_ tends to yank the power and hasn't had any problems
[3:03] <plugwash_> but some people seem to suffer massively from corruption
[3:03] <[Saint]> If you run sync && sync and then do it *immediately*, there's still no chance you'll get away with it.
[3:03] <CarryA1911> I've just not seen the topic come up in the few articles I've read. I was thinking of trying to figure out a way to powr it in the car and the thought hit me
[3:03] <[Saint]> It takes literally a few seconds to type "shutdown", and, the benefits are clear.
[3:04] <SirLagz> or script shutdown
[3:04] <CarryA1911> pi shuts down that quick? My home *nix boxes take ~20-30 seconds
[3:04] <[Saint]> You could probably have it run off some decent caps for long enough to safe shutdown after detecting poweroff.
[3:05] <[Saint]> That sounds like a recipe for disaster, though.
[3:05] <[Saint]> CarryA1911: it depends heavily on what you're doing, I would guess.
[3:05] <[Saint]> My pis shut down in a matter of seconds.
[3:05] <CarryA1911> k
[3:06] <CarryA1911> i don't even own one yet
[3:06] <[Saint]> But, I don't run a GUI at all, which I would guess helps a lot in that respect.
[3:07] <CarryA1911> local shop has them (pi's) on sale for 29 and change
[3:07] <CarryA1911> beats even amazon
[3:07] * lvispy (~luiz@179-125-139-77.desktop.com.br) has joined #raspberrypi
[3:07] <[Saint]> Unless you pay for Prime, and, heck, why not?
[3:07] <[Saint]> Dat free shippin'.
[3:08] <CarryA1911> hehe it is a deal, i just don't spend enough w/ amazon to make it work.
[3:08] <binaryhermit> let me guess, microcenter?
[3:09] <CarryA1911> binaryhermit: wins
[3:09] <[Saint]> As soon as I read "in the car", it was apparent it wasn't going to be particularly taxed in any way.
[3:09] <[Saint]> Unless you live in the car, or something.
[3:09] <CarryA1911> lol nope
[3:10] <SirLagz> [Saint]: or use the Pi as a dashcam with a crappy USB webcam :P
[3:10] <[Saint]> that's like twice the price of a not-so-crappy dashcam. :)
[3:10] <CarryA1911> ha I just watched a youtube video of some guy doing that. Pi-cam for front usb cam for back window
[3:11] <SirLagz> haha
[3:11] <[Saint]> It never ceases to amaze me how willing people are to create more expensive, comparitively inferior products, out of a raspi.
[3:11] <SirLagz> [Saint]: as in using a Pi for a dashcam is twice the price ?
[3:11] <[Saint]> Heck yeah.
[3:11] <SirLagz> [Saint]: wanna buy me a dashcam and send it over my way ? :P
[3:11] <[Saint]> "good enough" dashcams are like $20
[3:11] <SirLagz> where from ?
[3:11] <SirLagz> fleabay ?
[3:11] <[Saint]> Internets.
[3:12] * Cy-Gor (~Brian@cpe-70-124-70-140.austin.res.rr.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[3:12] <SirLagz> I never trust those ones haha...$20 for a dashcam. Something is just too good to be true :P
[3:13] <CarryA1911> so what do you folks use your pi for?

[3:14] <SirLagz> mine just sit there gathering dust at the moment
[3:14] <SirLagz> I was using one of mine as a wifi router, and the other as a home security cam
[3:14] <[Saint]> Not when you think about the fact that all it really needs to do is capture qvga and some ~128bps audio stream in a ~2GB loop.
[3:14] <SirLagz> [Saint]: I'd like higher resolution than qvga though
[3:15] <[Saint]> Move to Russia, I hear they give out dashcams with a birth cirtificate over there.
[3:15] <SirLagz> [Saint]: rofl. wouldn't be surprised if they were
[3:15] <[Saint]> If YouTube is any evidence, every Russian has one.
[3:16] <CarryA1911> I was thinking that
[3:16] <SirLagz> [Saint]: I wish I had a good dascam. I tried using my phone as one, but because I don't have a SD Card, i filled up the internal storage way too quickly haha
[3:16] <[Saint]> The main issue to combat with a pi, and the expense thereof, when used as a webcam, would be wiring, casing, and mounting.
[3:16] <SirLagz> [Saint]: as a dashcam you mean ?
[3:16] <[Saint]> The pi itself isn't too expensive, but the extra bits to turn it into a dashcam...
[3:17] <[Saint]> dashcam, right.

[3:18] <SirLagz> [Saint]: do donations count as 'paid' for ? lol
[3:19] <[Saint]> I would suppose not. :)

[3:20] <[Saint]> Mine is unlimited, and fast enough, to offload HD video in realtime.

[3:20] <[Saint]> Uuuuuuugh.
[3:20] <[Saint]> Ok.
[3:20] <SirLagz> [Saint]: it's fast enough to do it though
[3:20] <[Saint]> c'mon AU...sort it out guys.
[3:20] <[Saint]> Its getting embarrasing.
[3:20] <SirLagz> [Saint]: my phone uploaded 400mbs in half an hour without me knowing and burnt through all my data in a month
[3:21] <SirLagz> all my data in a day*
[3:21] <[Saint]> My telco gives you one free "holy crapballs, my data!"
[3:21] <SirLagz> [Saint]: which you'll never use because you have unlimited ? :P
[3:22] <SirLagz> My Telco is a piece of shit retail-ly while great network-ly
[3:22] <[Saint]> I had a similar experience on a metered plan, and they reversed it after some trivial complaining.
[3:22] <SirLagz> going to call em up again today and see if i can get anything out of them
[3:22] <[Saint]> Now they send out "YTo, dawg, you's burning through yo data..." SMS messages.
[3:22] <SirLagz> [Saint]: yeah mine send those out too. 48 hours AFTER you've used all your data
[3:22] <SirLagz> twits.
[3:23] <[Saint]> Ah, that's definitely a case for a reversal.
[3:23] <[Saint]> But, I guess this was ages ago?

[9:56] <causality> wget is a C program :)
[9:57] <chunkyhead> causality: i mean a really need specific C program, no features but downloading a small webpage
[9:59] <causality> i'm sure you'll be fine with wget if you're just doing a simple fetch
[9:59] <causality> but it will depend on what else your pi is doing..
[10:03] <gordonDrogon> wget is OK. I use it myself in a once-a-minute application.
[10:05] <hyperair> chunkyhead: wget isn't CPU-bound. i don't think your pi can hold a network connection fast enough to bog down wget.

[17:08] <chunkyhead> how to view the list of commands executed since startup? im on arch
[17:08] <plugwash_> gordonDrogon, sure but ipv6 has very different considerations to ipv4, just adding ipv6 support to a "what is my IP" site is likely to do more harm than good
[17:09] <plugwash_> firstly in most applications for such a service you are likely to want either a specific IP version or both IP versions, not whichever IP version your client happened to pick
[17:09] <nid0> fwiw, there's http://ip.dnsexit.com/ as well
[17:09] <gordonDrogon> a site can only tell you what IP address you connect on - most dual-stack systems try ipv6 first, so I always see my ipv6 address on them - if they support ipv6.
[17:10] <gordonDrogon> nid0, give me my ipv4 address :)
[17:10] <plugwash_> secondly the IP seen by an ipv6 web server is very likely to be a "privacy extensions" ip
[17:10] <plugwash_> which you don't want to use for anything that will persist more than briefly

[17:24] <gordonDrogon> got my proper IPv6 address now. none of this autoconf nonsense ;-)
[17:24] <plugwash_> <gordonDrogon> a site can only tell you what IP address you connect on - most dual-stack systems try ipv6 first, so I always see my ipv6 address on them - if they support ipv6. <-- which most of the time is not what you want
[17:24] <gordonDrogon> it's exactly what I want - I want to prever IPv6 and only fall back to ipv4 when I can't connect.
[17:25] <Armand> gordonDrogon: We're struggling for IP4 addresses.. it's flamin' well annoying.

[22:57] <shiftplusone> Stroes, nobody is going to commit to help without knowing the actual question.
[22:58] <Bray90820> Does pretty much any wifi dongle work on a pi or are there a specific set of ones that work
[22:58] * lvispy (~luiz@179-125-139-77.desktop.com.br) Quit ()
[22:58] <gordonDrogon> Stroes, if your Pi connected directly to the Internet, or behind a NAT router? If the latter, then there's not much point firewalling it for the most part.
[22:59] <Stroes> ok, to give you a rundown, i have a rpi connect to 2 different networks, 1 lan and 1wifi, i need to set it to only send ssh and 3306, 3307 traffic over the lan and http and smtp over the wifi connection
