[2:55] <apainter> how much of the 512MB ram is normally free? could i setup a ramdisk?
[2:55] * mpmctoo (mpmctoo@unaffiliated/mpmc) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:55] <[Saint]> You could indeed.
[2:56] <[Saint]> There's no way I can answer the prior question, though, having zero insight into your setup and/or use case.
[2:57] <apainter> a ramdisk user account also has uses. we are talking extremely small amount of data in account, whole account probably less than 80MB
[2:57] <[Saint]> That's ridiculously wasteful, though.
[2:58] <[Saint]> You could symlink in the files that you actually *need* to be encrypted.
[2:58] <[Saint]> Which is likely a heck of a lot less than 80MB
[2:58] <apainter> i can mount an ecryptfs on some folders in the account so the data will be on a usb flashdrive plugged into the usb hub (wall powered)
[2:58] * Zackio (~Matrixium@unaffiliated/matrixiumn) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[2:59] <[Saint]> On one of my pis, the entire system lives in a RAMdisk. :)
[2:59] <[Saint]> And boots off a 16MB sdcard.
[2:59] <apainter> ramdisk user account is to prevent preservation of tracking files
[3:00] <apainter> i so want to do that
[3:00] <[Saint]> No no no, easier way to do that is to just make /tmp a RAMdisk, then symlink ~/.cache to /tmp
[3:01] <[Saint]> make /tmp noexec while you're at it
[3:01] <apainter> got it
[3:01] <[Saint]> I've done that on my machines for years now.
[3:02] <apainter> cool. thanks gtg
[3:02] <apainter> bbl
[3:02] <[Saint]> o/

[3:57] <apainter> [Saint], just checked my .folder structure. looks everything i wanted to protect is in one folder vice about 30 folders. ecryptfs may be easier to use than i thought
[3:57] <apainter> can swap be safely disabled or is there not enough ram?
[3:58] <[Saint]> Swap can be disabled, but, I wouldn't.
[3:58] <[Saint]> Just, if you have to, shrink the swapfile.
[3:58] * apainter winces
[3:58] <apainter> why?
[3:59] <[Saint]> 32~64MB should be sufficient
[3:59] <[Saint]> Why? because 512MB is a pitiful amount of RAM, and it pays to be able to swap out non-essential services when needed.
[4:00] <apainter> does raspbian use that much memory?
[4:00] <[Saint]> Its a full X desktop in 512MB...
[4:02] <apainter> that's not helping. i'm not grasping any vague ideas of what that means. (i do know what X is)

[4:03] <apainter> EVEN THE MODEL a AT 256mb RAM CAN RUN x RIGHT?
[4:03] <apainter> oops sorry about caps lock
[4:03] <[Saint]> Raspbian uses a swapfile by default, because, yes, it will use a LOT of memory in certain circumstances. It will try *very* hard not to swap out, but it pays for the system to be able to swap out.
[4:04] <[Saint]> In reality, its ~100MB, if you can't afford to spare ~100MB of swapfile, you've got much bigger issues.

[4:12] <apainter> doesn't hurt tho. the whole pi is small enough, no flashdrive needed
[4:12] <[Saint]> I'd be willing to say that that would be an extreme measure.
[4:13] <[Saint]> a 5 digit numeric PIN would likely be wholely enough.
[4:13] <[Saint]> Or a 2-factor login sequence.

[4:16] <apainter> o i c
[4:17] <apainter> i don't want mine to have any radios

[4:18] <[Saint]> (Android doesn't offer anything like this natively, which is mildly annoying, but its trivial to set up)
[4:19] <[Saint]> The only reason I do that is because my devices often contain some fairly sensitive data.
[4:19] <apainter> i was looking at the dsi header and the available cases made for the pi and wondering if it occurred to anyone to make a touchscreen for it. like to make a more powerfull (than say android) tablet device (and more portable?)

[12:19] <lastnode> tehn i take it out and i put it back in
[12:19] <lastnode> and it is rw
[12:19] <lastnode> could this be a problem for the rpi?
[12:20] <lastnode> (for the record, when i read the sd card now the boot partition (fat32) can be read just fine)
[12:20] <ShorTie> i would think it would affect the pi, except for the sdcard not be actually writen too

[15:21] <trickyhero> so I'v formatted and put new files on this USB stick, but when I stick it into my pi, it still comes up with the directories of the debian install
[15:22] <shiftplusone> trickyhero, how did you format it?
[15:22] <trickyhero> gparted
[15:23] <shiftplusone> deleted all partitions and everything or just formatted the fat32 one?

[15:47] <ppq> gordonDrogon, hi :) i'd like to do soft-pwm via usb on linux. any idea how to do that without additional hardware? my goal is to power and control a notebook fan via USB
[15:47] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable167.12-130-66.mc.videotron.ca) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:49] <mgottschlag> via USB? I guess you need an USB microcontroller for that
[15:49] <ppq> i was hoping to do it directly, with a driver or something
[15:50] <mgottschlag> does the notebook fan already have an USB interface?
[15:50] <mgottschlag> or wait, does it only get power via USB and you really want to control that power via the pi's GPIO?
[15:50] <ppq> no, it has +5V, GND, PWM and some tacho signal output
[15:50] <[Saint]> what are you cooling?
[15:51] * azeam (~azeam@unaffiliated/azeam) Quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[15:51] <ppq> right now only 5V and GND are connected. it works, but the fan is too loud
[15:51] <mgottschlag> yeah, if you want to do PWM, you need to use the GPIOs of the pi
[15:51] <ppq> so i was hoping to generate a PWM signal on one of the USB data wires
[15:51] <mgottschlag> not possible
[15:52] <mgottschlag> you'd need a microcontroller inbetween which implements the USB protocol
[15:52] <[Saint]> If this is *for* the pi - I would just...not.
[15:52] <ppq> it is not for the pi ;)
[15:52] <[Saint]> Ah. Great. :)
[15:53] * azeam (~azeam@unaffiliated/azeam) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:53] <ppq> one possibility to do it is using a USB serial bridge, like the PL2303, and just send a stream of 0s and 1s to generate the signal
[15:54] <ppq> so i can use an existing driver. but it would be much cooler without a chip

[20:16] <fwaokda> I have hooked up a USB barcode scanner to my raspberry pi, but while in terminal every time I scan a barcode it automatically writes the barcode into the terminal and then executes a enter/return. how can i prevent this?

[20:21] <fwaokda> lastnode, well if i just open terminal and scan a barcode it happens
[20:22] <The_HunterT> What are you trying to get it to do?
[20:23] <fwaokda> The_HunterT, well right now I've wrote a small python script that i want to run, then it listens for input from the scanner and then once it reads it, writes it out to the terminal, then goes back to listening.
[20:23] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable167.12-130-66.mc.videotron.ca) Quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
[20:23] <fwaokda> After i get that much working then i was going to have it look up what the item of the barcode is and go from there...
[20:23] <The_HunterT> Are you sure it's not running? That sounds like it's already doing that action.
[20:24] <fwaokda> positive the script isn't running
[20:24] <The_HunterT> Do a "killall python"
[20:24] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable167.12-130-66.mc.videotron.ca) has joined #raspberrypi
[20:24] <lastnode> yes, it's probably running in the background
[20:24] <lastnode> do what The_HunterT says
[20:25] <fwaokda> "python: no process found"
[20:25] <lastnode> do 'ps -a | grep python'
[20:25] <lastnode> ?
[20:25] * datagutt (~datagutt@unaffiliated/datagutt) has joined #raspberrypi
[20:25] <The_HunterT> or 'ps -a | grep .py'
[20:26] <fwaokda> when i scan a barcode with the terminal open i get the barcode number and then it performs a return and i get the error "bash: 094198862298: command not found"
[20:26] <fwaokda> ok i'll try that
[20:26] * MidnighToker (~Toker@unaffiliated/midnightoker) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[20:27] <The_HunterT> Try this, type "echo" without pressing enter/return and then scan a barcode. See if it just echos that command
[20:28] <fwaokda> when i did the echo then scanned it just prints the barcode number
[20:29] <fwaokda> lastnode, i did the grep commands and nothing returned for either of them
[20:29] <geordie> sounds like the barcode reader presents itself as a keyboard
[20:29] <geordie> a simple design
[20:30] <fwaokda> hmm geordie, how can i disable that?
[20:30] <botnut> a lot of them do
[20:30] <The_HunterT> Okay so here's what I suggest if you can't get the scanner to stop sending an enter. Write your python code with sys.argv and use 'python code.py [barcode]' and then it should run and use that barcode as an argument.
[20:30] <botnut> some scanners have a setting for that
[20:30] <botnut> try to install the software on your desktop first for the scanner and flash the config on the scanner to see if that works
[20:30] <botnut> if at all - meaning if it lets you
[20:30] <botnut> ran into the same issue with some POS systems we built a system for
[20:31] <fwaokda> ahhh ok thanks for all the help i'll look into those
[20:31] <The_HunterT> Love me some sys.argv
[20:31] <fwaokda> The_HunterT, yes i like that method of doing it :)
[20:32] <The_HunterT> That's last ditch effort, try what botnut said first.
