[3:39] <bnmorgan> could someone walk me through setting a static IP on PI running arch?

[3:41] <Sonny_Jim> http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=54080
[3:41] * killer_prince (~killer_pr@122.171.73.170) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[3:43] * [Saint] thinks that most people probably don't actually want a static IP and that DHCP reservation is likely fine
[3:43] * Sonny_Jim nods
[3:43] <Sonny_Jim> A lot of home routers now actually do the name thingo (I forget what it's called)
[3:43] <Sonny_Jim> You can ping raspberrypi
[3:43] <Sonny_Jim> (it's late here)
[3:44] <[Saint]> If you're going to be moving the machine around - DHCP reservation.
[3:44] * rymate1234 (~rymate@146.185.191.55) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[3:45] <[Saint]> No one likes having to reconfigure because there's a collision on the network they joined.
[3:45] <Sonny_Jim> I worked somewhere where we used Windows mobile devices to issue betting slips
[3:45] * darkbasic_ (~quassel@niko.linuxsystems.it) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[3:45] <Sonny_Jim> There was roughly 10-16 units on each site, all using static IPs
[3:45] <Sonny_Jim> I have no idea why, managed to convinced them to switch to DHCP in the end
[3:46] * darkbasic (~quassel@niko.linuxsystems.it) has joined #raspberrypi
[3:46] <[Saint]> Some people think its the only way to handle such things.
[3:46] <Sonny_Jim> One of their reasons (I kid you not) was "It's more secure, as it stops people from joining the network...."
[3:46] <binaryhermit> o_O
[3:46] <[Saint]> I...what? :)
[3:46] <Sonny_Jim> Exactly
[3:46] <Sonny_Jim> I googled the company password, it's on a few pastebin lists
[3:47] <Sonny_Jim> Their security was pretty terrible considering they were a gambling company
[3:47] <[Saint]> "the" password?
[3:47] <[Saint]> Jeebus.
[3:47] <Sonny_Jim> Uhuh
[3:47] <[Saint]> Oh dear.
[3:47] <Sonny_Jim> It was the company name with 3 and e swapped
[3:47] * bizarro_1 (~bizarro_1@195.Red-83-53-30.dynamicIP.rima-tde.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[3:48] <Sonny_Jim> I knew we should've used doubled ROT13
[3:48] <Sonny_Jim> Much more secure ;-)
[3:49] <Sonny_Jim> Oh and check this
[3:49] <Sonny_Jim> They moved all their bet issuing servers to the 'cloud'
[3:49] <Sonny_Jim> One of the main reasons was "Well, this way, we don' need to do software control, as we only need to update one box rather than 10"
[3:49] <Sonny_Jim> If your company can't do software control for 10 boxes properly, you have bigger issues
[3:49] <hybr1d8> doubled ROT13 is insecure - it is better to use four passes - ROT10, ROT5, ROT6 then ROT5 again
[3:50] * [Saint] smirks
[3:50] * Mike08e7 grins
[3:52] <[Saint]> Bwahahahahah...what the Hell?!? BRA 1: GER 7?!?
[3:52] <[Saint]> How the...
[3:52] * [Saint] doesn't even *like* roundy-feetsy-ball
[3:53] <[Saint]> But I find that highly amusing.
[3:53] * rymate1234 (~rymate@146.185.191.55) has joined #raspberrypi
[3:53] <Sonny_Jim> I believe FIFA paid Brazil to lose by a huge amount to make US audiences more interested, as they only like games with big scorelines
[3:53] <Sonny_Jim> Guarentees a bigger audience for the final, so more advertising money
[3:54] * Sonny_Jim adjusts tinfoil hat
[3:54] <Sonny_Jim> Hell, they are classified as a "Not for profit" organisation, anyone care to guess what their bank balance currently stands at?
[3:55] <Sonny_Jim> I think it's slightly over 1 Beeeelion dollars. Not for profit. 1 Billion dollars.....
[3:55] <Sonny_Jim> Is that an oxymoron?
[3:55] <[Saint]> Yeah...its...odd.
[3:55] <[Saint]> Put it into their obviously struggling economy...or...feetsy-balls.
[3:55] <[Saint]> FEETSY_BALLS!
[3:56] <[Saint]> I guess the hope is that it gets returned via tourism.
[3:56] <[Saint]> But I wonder if it pays for a bajillion tourists coming and taking a dump over your city.
[3:56] <[Saint]> (would they notice?...meh)
[3:57] * dj_pi (~dj@c-107-5-25-243.hsd1.mi.comcast.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 248 seconds)

[4:00] <Sonny_Jim> I believe not only do they not have to pay any taxes, Brazil has to pay for the stadiums, plus pay FIFA for the priveledge of them being there
[4:01] <Sonny_Jim> If you don't think FIFA is crooked, look at where they thought it would be a good idea to hold the next world cup
[4:01] <Sonny_Jim> Hint: It's somewhere where it's not exactly tepid and conducive to players not passing out from heat exhaustion
[4:03] * hyperair (hyperair@ubuntu/member/hyperair) has joined #raspberrypi
[4:03] <binaryhermit> Sonny_Jim: that's not the next world cup
[4:04] <binaryhermit> the next world cup is in Soviet Russia
[4:04] <[Saint]> Its pretty obvious by now that the FIFA host candidates and bidding/voting is just a farce.
[4:04] <Sonny_Jim> Ah good, so you were checking I wasn't just talking rubbish ;)
[4:04] <binaryhermit> but the 2022 world cup (the one after next) is in Qatar
[4:04] <[Saint]> Brazil getting this one was more than slightly questionable.
[4:04] <Sonny_Jim> And erm, Soviet?
[4:04] <[Saint]> And the Qatar one...yeah.
[4:05] <[Saint]> Sonny_Jim: that's why its so expensive.
[4:05] <[Saint]> The time machines.
[4:05] <binaryhermit> Sonny_Jim: it's a joke
[4:05] <binaryhermit> or at least an attempt at one
[4:06] <[Saint]> The World Cup is being held in 1991
[4:06] * [Saint] checks his dates
[4:06] <[Saint]> Yep. USSR was still a thing in 91', phew.
[4:06] <[Saint]> Just.

[4:27] <binaryhermit> [Saint]: what did Avast do?
[4:27] * binaryhermit remembers reading something about it but doesn't remember what
[4:27] <binaryhermit> nevermind, http://venturebeat.com/2014/07/08/avast-bought-your-phone-on-ebay-recovered-what-you-thought-you-wiped/

[4:31] <binaryhermit> haha... "If you haven’t heard of AVAST, we’re only the most trusted name in antivirus, actively protecting more than 200 million PCs, Macs and Androids..."
[4:31] <Sonny_Jim> But but but
[4:31] <Sonny_Jim> Macs don't get viruses!
[4:31] <binaryhermit> I bet Norton/McAfee/AVG all secure more devices
[4:31] <binaryhermit> and MSE
[4:31] <Sonny_Jim> It's like haircare adverts using meaningless metrics like "10% more bounce" and "50% more shine"
[4:32] <Sonny_Jim> How do you prove you are the "most trusted name"?
[4:32] <binaryhermit> Sonny_Jim: IIRC most Mac/Linux viruses exploit the PEBKAC bug

[8:45] <DSdavidDS> Hello everyone. I am having a problem with setting up wifi on my raspberry pi (was working, but stopped working after I enabled ssh. Now, it isn't working at all)
[8:46] <Sonny_Jim> I doubt enabling SSH broke anything
[8:47] <DSdavidDS> well I am connected through wlan0 but I cannot ping to any website
[8:47] <Sonny_Jim> well, wifi is working then?
[8:48] <DSdavidDS> yep
[8:48] <DSdavidDS> it was working earlier until I enable ssh and rebooted
[8:48] <Sonny_Jim> Have you checked whether it's a DNS issue?
[8:48] <Sonny_Jim> ie try pinging 173.194.41.175
[8:48] <Sonny_Jim> (google.co.uk)
[8:49] <DSdavidDS> nope
[8:49] <DSdavidDS> works perfectly fine on my main computer
[8:49] <Sonny_Jim> And the Pi is connected to the same access point?
[8:50] * lledet (~lledet@ip72-204-190-94.no.no.cox.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[8:50] <DSdavidDS> Yes. I think something running is blocking access
[8:50] <Sonny_Jim> You can ping your Pi from your main computeR?
[8:50] <DSdavidDS> when I ping my raspi from my main computer, I get a brief reply as my raspi reboots
[8:51] <DSdavidDS> so the raspi is closing something that is causing this to happen
[8:51] <Sonny_Jim> And I take it you can't ping your main computer from your Pi?
[8:51] <DSdavidDS> nope (I was able to previously)
[8:51] <Sonny_Jim> type in "route"
[8:52] <Sonny_Jim> And check that the default gateway is the same as your main computer
[8:52] <DSdavidDS> yep
[8:52] <DSdavidDS> I set all that up correctly
[8:52] <Sonny_Jim> What is the default gateway set to at the moment?
[8:52] <Sonny_Jim> Are you using a static IP?
[8:52] * x1337807x (~x1337807x@173-13-137-19-sfba.hfc.comcastbusiness.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[8:52] <DSdavidDS> 10.0.0.1
[8:53] <DSdavidDS> yep
[8:53] <DSdavidDS> my device is set to .20
[8:53] <DSdavidDS> my second destination on that list is 10.0.0.0. Does that affect anything?
[8:53] <Sonny_Jim> How did you enable ssh?
[8:53] <Sonny_Jim> and what OS are you using? Raspian?
[8:54] <DSdavidDS> at first, I tried sudo update-rc.d ssh defaults
[8:54] <DSdavidDS> yep, rasbian
[8:54] <DSdavidDS> and after rebooting, it stopped working
[8:54] <Sonny_Jim> You didn't alter anything else?
[8:54] <DSdavidDS> no system files
[8:55] <Sonny_Jim> Have you tried switching back to DHCP?
[8:55] <DSdavidDS> the only commands I ran are sudo update-rc.d ssh stop|disable
[8:55] <DSdavidDS> dhcp, no.
[8:55] <Sonny_Jim> How did you configure the network connection?
[8:56] <DSdavidDS> ifconfig shows that I am successfully connected to 10.0.0.20
[8:56] <DSdavidDS> sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
[8:56] <DSdavidDS> usual way
[8:56] <Sonny_Jim> I think you are reading the output of ifconfig wrong
[8:56] <Sonny_Jim> You should be looking at iwconfig
[8:56] <DSdavidDS> iwconfig shows I am connected
[8:57] <Sonny_Jim> And your routers IP address is 10.0.0.1?
[8:57] <DSdavidDS> like I said earlier, I get a brief response from my computer when I reboot my raspi
[8:57] <DSdavidDS> yes

[8:57] <Sonny_Jim> And you can ping that address from your main computer?
[8:57] <DSdavidDS> only for a breif moment when I reboot
[8:57] <Sonny_Jim> 10.0.0.1?
[8:58] <DSdavidDS> oh yes
[8:58] <DSdavidDS> router is fine
[8:58] <Sonny_Jim> To clarify, you can only ping 10.0.0.1 when the Pi is rebooting?
[8:58] <DSdavidDS> 10.0.0.20 (pi)
[8:59] <DSdavidDS> from my computer, I can ping 10.0.0.20 while my pi is rebooting for a brief second

[10:13] <Sonny_Jim> I would backup anything on the card, reformat it and try from scratch
[10:13] <Sonny_Jim> Is it in a case?
[10:14] <renihs> well, i took it out atm
[10:14] <Sonny_Jim> Ok, has the card worked before?
[10:14] <renihs> i can rewrite the sdhc card i suppose, however it mounts just fine
[10:14] <Sonny_Jim> Oh ok, I see it has
[10:14] <renihs> filesystem seems normal
[10:14] <renihs> on my desktop it mounts fine :)
[10:14] <Sonny_Jim> Have you considered the possibility that the SD contacts might not be connecting properly?
[10:15] <renihs> Sonny_Jim, yes, i thought that was the cause last time i tested so i put something inbetween to make it "tighter"
[10:15] <renihs> but the usage on the sd contacts show it is contacting properly
[10:15] <renihs> and i can see it contacting :(
[10:15] <Sonny_Jim> I have had a similar issue, the problem is when you do that it can bend the pins and make it worse
[10:15] <renihs> i see hmm
[10:16] <Sonny_Jim> tbh I hate the SD connector
[10:16] <renihs> well the pins look fine to me
[10:16] <renihs> they arent twisted or something, all looking healthy
[10:16] <renihs> i suppose it is the sdhc card hmm
[10:16] <Sonny_Jim> I take it you have tried with everything unplugged barring the card and power?
[10:16] <renihs> yes
[10:16] <Sonny_Jim> And tried a different PSU etc
[10:17] <renihs> yeah, well i tried using usb power supply from my computer
[10:17] <renihs> and a different adapter, which i dont trust though
[10:17] <renihs> but the results are the same in all cases
[10:17] <Sonny_Jim> Sure
[10:17] <renihs> steady red pwr light, nothing blinks or happens :(
[10:17] <renihs> also no ouptput :)
[10:17] <Sonny_Jim> Hmm
[10:18] <Sonny_Jim> "Note: A faintly glowing steady green LED means no boot code has ever been executed, as almost the first thing the boot code does is to turn the faint glow off! When flashing/blinking the green LED should be as bright as the red LED."
[10:18] <Sonny_Jim> So is the green led dimmer than the red one?
[10:18] <Sonny_Jim> Ah wait
[10:18] <Sonny_Jim> ignore me
[10:18] <renihs> well, the ACT led is ...**very** fainltly on
[10:18] <renihs> if i use a magnifying glass
[10:18] <renihs> i can see ... a ... very ...faint green :p

[10:19] <Sonny_Jim> It seems to me that it's not reading the bootcode off the SD card for whatever reason
[10:19] <renihs> hmm
[10:19] <renihs> i need a replacement sdhc card to test i suppose

[10:25] <renihs> or vfat
[10:27] <renihs> i suppose i should rewrite that thingie, though i did pack some scripts on that pi hmm grbml
[10:27] <renihs> i suppose i pull a dd before
[10:27] <Sonny_Jim> Is the eee running Linux?
[10:27] <renihs> yeah
[10:27] <renihs> but its a first gen eee

[10:27] <renihs> and no space left

[10:27] <renihs> and little tools available it
[10:28] <Sonny_Jim> And you can't mount the 2nd partition?
[10:28] <renihs> thinking about how i can identify the fs on sdb2 except for a hex editor
[10:28] <renihs> yup, complains
[10:28] <Sonny_Jim> You can try fsck'ing it
[10:28] <Sonny_Jim> Oh ok what's the error message?

[10:28] <Sonny_Jim> erm
[10:28] <Sonny_Jim> I *think* it's ext3
[10:28] <renihs> well it says no valid xyz fs found
[10:28] <Sonny_Jim> sorry, ext4
[10:28] <renihs> when trying to mount sdb2
[10:29] <renihs> oh

[10:29] <renihs> well this kernel cant do ext4 hmm
[10:29] <renihs> though it should be able to mount without journal i suppose hmm
[10:29] <Sonny_Jim> I believe ext4 is backwards compatible
[10:29] <renihs> yeah
[10:30] <Sonny_Jim> cat /proc/filesystems will tell you what fs the running kernel supports
[10:30] <renihs> yeah, thats how i know i doesnt know ext4 :)
[10:30] <renihs> grmbl hmm
[10:31] <renihs> i suppose i dump the image and put a new one up hmm
[10:31] <renihs> something is amiss with the fs

[12:51] <shiftplusone> you can do that

[12:57] <shiftplusone> Engin, eh? the one I have does.
[12:58] <Engin> you have the dsp-ish f series i suppose
[12:58] <shiftplusone> yeah

[12:58] <shiftplusone> renihs, debatable. Some of us don't have any problems with sd cards. Others say they break if you sneeze. But usb stick have the same type of memory on them so, go figure.
[12:58] <renihs> shiftplusone, thats my thought hmm
[12:59] <shiftplusone> darsie, 'old version'? Just order from rs or farnell and you should be good

[13:02] <darsie> shiftplusone: ok. But I'm trying to get one cheaper and on ebay they say 'Rev. 2.0', 'newest version' or 'UK version'. raspberrypi.org doesn't mention any versions, so i'm not sure .
[13:02] <shiftplusone> so it's mostly register twiddling
[13:03] <shiftplusone> darsie, be careful
[13:03] <darsie> shiftplusone: What should I care about?
[13:03] <shiftplusone> darsie, they don't sell them for less than RRP, so if there are ebay sellers selling it for less, something is up.

[14:13] <spiralemystik> Hi all
[14:13] <javistacruz> yes I did. I've been sent a card with precompiled NOOBS
[14:13] <spiralemystik> I got some problem with my raspberry Pi with latest Xbian release
[14:14] <spiralemystik> I turned it on today and black screen, activity led is off, only the red one; I tried to mount my SD card on my computer and I get the following message
[14:14] <spiralemystik> http://pastebin.com/SRvSBSTa
[14:14] <ShorTie> i'd scrub noobs and download and write the raspbian image to the sdcard
[14:15] <ShorTie> your sdcard is corrupted
[14:16] <spiralemystik> Yes I know, some blocks are corrupted, any fix for this or format is mandatory?
[14:16] <ShorTie> rewriting an image to it is like the only fix
[14:16] <spiralemystik> noooooooooooo!!!
[14:16] <renihs> maybe badblocks first :p
[14:16] <ShorTie> don't need to format, just rewrite image

[14:17] <spiralemystik> what do you mean by rewrite? without formatting?
[14:17] <ShorTie> don't ever store any thing on he sdcard you can not loose
[14:18] <ShorTie> the rewriting like formates the sdcard
[14:18] <javistacruz> so you think it's to do with the sd image, not with the hardward?
[14:18] <ShorTie> it's not a format error anyways, it is just a file problem
[14:18] <spiralemystik> no, it works with another SD
[14:19] <javistacruz> that's not too bad :)
[14:19] <javistacruz> i was a bit worried...

[15:14] <sla_erick> I'm having an issue with ssh in my pi. I've been using my pi with a plugable 7 port usb that has connected a bluetooth dongle, a wifi dongle and a logitech c920 webcam. I havent had any issue regarding wifi or ssh. Since 4 days ago I've been seeing this problem that I describe next:

[15:15] * mike_t (~mike@pluto.dd.vaz.ru) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[15:16] <sla_erick> I power on my pi, everything works fine, i can connect to ssh without problems. When I finish using ssh, I close my session, then lets say 5 hours later when i try to connect to the pi via ssh, I'm unable to make the connection.
[15:16] <sla_erick> If I want to connect after this occurs, I have to reboot the pi
[15:18] <sla_erick> I dont know if there is a log saved for past sessions, i gues when i reboot the pi it cleans the user.log, so I have no idea how to check what is the problem
[15:19] * huza (~My@123.128.140.32) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:19] <sla_erick> also I've tried connecting the HDMI to a TV so I can manually check before rebooting, but the HDMI seems to work only if it was connected before powering the pi

[15:21] <sla_erick> sure, when I get home I'll try that and see if that is the problem
[15:22] <SirLagz> sla_erick: it'll at least show you the current output of the Pi, hopefully
[15:22] <sla_erick> but the weird thing is that it was functioning perfect with the usb hub, then I installed a lot of stuff with apt-get. I dont know if that has something to do with

[15:25] <sla_erick> is there a way I can save the system log and view it after I reboot?

[19:08] <Technicus> Hello, I am following this tutorial: < http://blog.oscarliang.net/raspberry-pi-arduino-connected-i2c/ >, I am trying to send 2 bites at once, how can I do that?
[19:09] <Technicus> I have two servos connected to the arduino and want to they first byte to identify which servo to move and the second byte to be the value for it to recieve.
[19:09] <Tachyon`> twice as many teeth

[19:10] <Tachyon`> you just have two Wire.write commands
[19:10] * LunaLovegood (~valkyrie@cable-12-106-228.b2b2c.ca) has left #raspberrypi
[19:10] <Tachyon`> wiith the two bytes
[19:11] <Technicus> I don't quite understand how to do that.
[19:12] <Tachyon`> er, well, I do it on arduino so I'm not too sure about the pi
[19:12] <Tachyon`> but you do simply send both bytes oen after the other for a multibyte command
[19:12] <Tachyon`> that said I'd also expect to see start/stop transmission commands an an address
[19:12] <Tachyon`> so I'm not entirely sure what's going on there

[19:14] <Tachyon`> Wire.beginTransmission(OLED_address); // begin transmitting
[19:14] <Tachyon`> Wire.write(0x40);//data mode
[19:14] <Tachyon`> Wire.write(0x81);
[19:15] <Tachyon`> I'd do something like that on arduino
[19:15] <Tachyon`> ahh
[19:15] * Hydra (~Hydra@5751c98f.skybroadband.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[19:16] <Tachyon`> same sort of thing then, but that's how you'd do two bytes, set the device address then send the two bytes (then end transmission however you do that in your pi lib), it's pretty easy
[19:16] <Technicus> Humm, I still don't quite understand what you mean.
[19:16] <mgottschlag> Technicus: you know http://www.eeherald.com/images/i2c_bus2.jpg ? So, every I2C transfer starts with a start bit and ends with a stop bit
[19:17] <mgottschlag> and you somehow have to tell your library to create these before and after your message
[19:17] <mgottschlag> now, I don't know how your library on the pi or on the arduino does that, but such control over the I2C message has to be possible
[19:18] <Tachyon`> the arduino uses Wire.beginTransmission(device id) and Wire.endTransmission for that with the Wire.writes between the two
[19:19] <Technicus> Tachyon`: can you direct me to an example?
[19:19] <Tachyon`> for the arduino?
[19:20] <mgottschlag> Technicus: http://wiki.erazor-zone.de/wiki:linux:python:smbus:doc seems to be the documentation for your i2c library
