[1:59] <skydog> im trying to understand what exactly Turbo Mode is, does it change overclock settings on its own or is it something made to supplement overclock settings?

[2:03] * SebastianFlyte (~sebf@pool-74-96-234-172.washdc.fios.verizon.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:06] <skydog> The confusing is stemming from the skeleton config.txt file having a "turbo mode" table which states it overvolts to 6, but then it says my warranty will be void if I overvolt and enable turbo mode at the same time.
[2:06] <skydog> That's whats not making any sort of sense to me.

[2:15] <ShorTie> i do know if you over do it, it will set a bit that they can tell which voids any warrenty

[2:38] <Ouyang> Tried searching for an answer online but couldn't find an answer, for any reason, would a raspi not work with a 128Gb card I have? (outside of user error)
[2:43] <ShorTie> imho, you would be better with a 8gig sdcard and a external hard drive
[2:44] <mhoney> is there an up to date bare bones version of raspbian or other? Tinycore doesn't have the packages I need
[2:44] <ShorTie> 1 little brown out at the right time and you can kiss all the info on the sdcard Bye Bye Bye Bye
[2:45] <ShorTie> there is a net-install for raspbian which is minimal

[2:54] <lost_soul> mhoney: or just use the normal raspbian image and remove what you don't want... build your own image to install
[2:55] <lost_soul> that way it has the packages you want all done up in case you need to reinstall
[2:55] * Jayface (~harry@50-80-175-166.client.mchsi.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:57] <mhoney> kinda want an embedded linux almost
[2:57] <mhoney> very very bare
[2:57] <lost_soul> mhoney: I used this as a guide to do mine.. it would be beneficial to read through the comments though as they give some more info
[2:57] <lost_soul> http://www.cnx-software.com/2012/07/31/84-mb-minimal-raspbian-armhf-image-for-raspberry-pi/
[2:57] <mhoney> thanks, ill give that a read
[2:58] <ShorTie> that what the net-install is, very very bare
[2:58] <lost_soul> it's more involved then the net install is.. but doable none the less
[2:58] <mhoney> lost_soul, perfect.. 84mb image on that link, thanks
[2:59] <lost_soul> mhoney: that is compressed image size.. it expands to something like 600meg including swap
[2:59] <lost_soul> a bit misleading, I know

[3:00] <lost_soul> so long as you are comfortable with doing a net install ShorTie is right in that it would be the best way to go
[3:01] <lost_soul> I don't think I could find the net install when I used that guide and did mine
[3:02] <Jayface> with net-install the trick is to get internet
[3:03] <Jayface> once that is done you are made in the shade
[3:03] <ShorTie> you could do a 'rm -f /' for a real minimal install
[3:03] <Jayface> you forgot -r
[3:03] <lost_soul> lol
[3:03] <Jayface> you need it now to do any damage

[3:04] <Jayface> you know 'disk deleter'
[3:05] <UnaClocker> 27 days of uptime on my Raspberry Pi OpenWRT router.. :) Doing better than my internet connection.. :)
[3:05] <Jayface> nice do you use a switch then?
[3:06] <Jayface> or usb 10/100 ethernet ports? seems like a bottle-neck to use that thing as a router
[3:06] <UnaClocker> Yeah, plugged into my gigabit switch.
[3:06] <lost_soul> I was thinking that myself
[3:07] * skydog (~frostbite@198-84-178-214.cpe.teksavvy.com) Quit (Quit: Lost terminal)
[3:07] <UnaClocker> It's got my cablemodem (6mbit, cuz I'm cheap) on a USB adapter, and the onboard ethernet goes into my switch.. Works a treat..
[3:07] <Jayface> if you are going to do a net install i recommend Arch
[3:07] <Jayface> wifi-menu is a nice ncurses utility if you are going the wireless route

[4:04] <dima202> Hi, I just got a raspberry today and I am very excited. I want to setup it up for my grandmother so she can watch Russian streaming service. Instead of the remote with so many buttons I got her a simple nes controller for ease of use. THe problem is I download raspbnc xbnc distro and it does not recognize the joystick at all. The os seems to see it as I can test the joystick through jstest. Anyone know if this is a distro problem? I am going to
[4:05] <dima202> If anyone was successful in getting a usb joystick to control xbnc please let me know

[14:14] <skoushik> I don't think so. I was able to connect the cable to the laptop (which is connected via wifi to the router), and everything works fine. The problem's only when I connect it to the router

[14:20] <skoushik> Didn't get you. I'm able to connect the router to the pi directly, but the ip address does not get assigned (I think). I guess that prob is solved when I connect it to the laptop and share the internet connection.
[14:21] <therion23> if you have a cable directly between your pi and your laptop and that works, then your cable is a crossover cable
[14:21] <therion23> that will not work with a router unless it has an "uplink" port (not sure it's called that anymore)
[14:22] <skoushik> crossover cable? hmm.. I haven't heard of that. I just thought it was a standard RJ-45 cable.

[22:53] * osxdude|MBP (~osxdude@unaffiliated/osxdude) has joined #raspberrypi
[22:53] <Cykey> So as we all know (right?), the tiny cheap edimax Wi-Fi adapter is cheap and small
[22:54] <Cykey> but it sucks a**.
[22:54] <Cykey> So, tell me, which adapter is good and doesn't suck? I don't mind paying a bit more.

[22:59] <Tachyon`> it's ideal for the pi too, barely sticks out at all

[23:01] <Cykey> shiftplusone: Well, maybe it's a problem with the chip or the pi. But it's weird, when the connection goes inactive for a little while, the entire pi goes offline (it's still running, but I can't ping it)
[23:01] <Cykey> it "disconnects" from the network
[23:01] <shiftplusone> do you have a multimeter?

[23:05] <shiftplusone> can you check what's going on from the pi itself? dmesg could have some useful
[23:07] <linwiz> 1A may not be enough to power the pi and the wifi.
[23:07] <Cykey> shiftplusone: yeah, hold on
[23:08] <Cykey> linwiz: gah, really? how much does it want from me?! ;P
[23:08] * slobber (~linkxs@unaffiliated/linkxs) Quit (Quit: RAGEQUIT)
[23:08] <linwiz> I have two usb chargers I can't use because they don't provide enough power. But the third charger, I never have wifi problems with.
[23:09] * slobber (~linkxs@unaffiliated/linkxs) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:09] <linwiz> Depends on what you wifi requires. 2A should be plenty
[23:10] <linwiz> wifi devices are power hungry
[23:11] <linwiz> I would test that theory before you go chasing down log files. I spent atleast an hour trying to figure out why my wifi wouldn't work and I changed the charger and it connected right up.
[23:11] <Cykey> I don't have a better charger
[23:11] <Cykey> oh, wait, yes I do
[23:11] <Cykey> I have a 5V 2.1A
[23:12] <Cykey> should be plenty right?
[23:12] <linwiz> yes
[23:12] <Cykey> (It's an iPad charger, lol)
[23:12] <linwiz> If that doesn't fix it, then you chase down log files etc

[23:45] <steve_rox> i assume they would have anti feedback protection of some sort
[23:45] <ShorTie> that be the diode
[23:45] <PacketFarm> I am having trouble with the driver being found in hostpabd while making a hot spot, run lsusb -t and theres the driver
[23:46] <PacketFarm> so I change the hostapd.conf to reflect that
[23:46] <steve_rox> well the diode never got hot so its okay i think
[23:46] <PacketFarm> and it fails every time
[23:46] <ShorTie> have you looked in dmesg for any clues PacketFarm
[23:48] <steve_rox> so my ups idea is resionably safe?

[23:55] <PacketFarm> for the pi?
[23:55] <PacketFarm> This shouldn't need anything extra.. support is in the kernal
