[0:31] <DoctorBTC> Steve_Mac: at command prompt: ssh pi@raspberrypi.local (i think that should work if you haven't renamed your pi
[0:32] <[Saint_]> pi@IP.Address.HERE is even more foolproof.
[0:32] * [Saint_] is now known as [Saint]
[0:32] <DoctorBTC> ^ +1
[0:33] <Steve_Mac> thanks infact this worked: SSH (192.168.0.xx) -l pi
[0:33] <Steve_Mac> i needed to change user to pi:)
[0:34] <Steve_Mac> no brackets around address obviously
[0:34] <[Saint]> slightly weird way of formatting it, but, huzzah.
[0:35] * [Saint] usually sets the clients he SSHs to reularly up in ~/.ssh/config
[0:36] <[Saint]> that way I just need to do "ssh <alias>"
[0:36] <gordonDrogon> -l pi is fine, pi@ip is also fine.
[0:36] * gordonDrogon ponders something about ye old rsh ..
[0:37] <[Saint]> Oh. Yeah. Of course. I didn't mean to imply it wasn't. Its just slightly obscure to see the -l flag being used.
[0:37] * oicu812 (~bonanza@bas7-barrie18-1242340489.dsl.bell.ca) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:38] <gordonDrogon> somes from rsh - and I just tried an old rsh trick, but it doesn't work with ssh - you could create a symlink to rsh (in e.g. ~/bin) with the remote machine name and just type the name but it doesn't work with ssh.
[0:38] <gordonDrogon> I have a ~/servers/ directory and that's in my $PATH and in it, I have shell scripts to ssh to various servers.
[0:39] <gordonDrogon> it runs a command to change the title bar of the xterm, ssh's into the server/pi/etc/ then changes the xterm title back again.
[0:41] * [Saint] has something rather similar going on witn screen
[0:42] <[Saint]> If my screen sessions aren't named, I can get myself into _all_ sort of confuzzled states.
[0:42] <gordonDrogon> I stopped using screen when I moved off a vt100 ...
[0:42] <[Saint]> Bah!
[0:42] <gordonDrogon> now I have desktops full of xterms ...
[0:42] * gurdulilfo (~gurdulilf@c68A047C1.dhcp.as2116.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[0:43] <gordonDrogon> my tcsh & bash command-line prompts have the PC name in it. e.g. gordon @ yakko: (desktop), gordon @ cmpi0: etc.

[4:54] <hamnstar> and a very basic one at that

[5:02] <hamnstar> dpiddy, try booting from different sd card maybe?
[5:03] <niston> obviously it was a power issue.
[5:03] <dpiddy> yeah hamnstar, when i plug the SD that I'm currently using into my PC, it doesnt show up under Computer. Do you think this means the SD card's gone bad?
[5:03] <[Saint]> I doubt it.
[5:04] <[Saint]> But it certainly seems to suggest the /filesystem/ has.
[5:04] <dpiddy> oh, so how could i fix that?
[5:04] <[Saint]> The card itself is almost certainly fine.
[5:04] <hamnstar> ah, yeah to be more precise
[5:05] <shiftplusone> well, 'under Computer' seems to imply windows, so you'd only see the boot partition
[5:05] <dpiddy> ok
[5:05] <niston> The most interesting power failure I ever had was when testing two 48U racks full of ancienct SONET gear... we couldn't get it to work, we had to test each rack independently, since the power supply we had was 30A max @ -48V. A single rack would draw 28Amps, it was insane.
[5:06] <dpiddy> do you think I could have blown the Pi's fuse that takes a day to reset?
[5:06] <shiftplusone> dpiddy, depends on what you did, but unlikely. what's the actual issues?

[9:06] <lost_soul> While your heart seems to be in the right place I'm not so sure how well this will work out. Employers also tend to hire people with a physical address, phone number, and said person will need decent clothing if they happen to even get an interview.

[9:14] <lost_soul> at least that seems to be the way it is in NY

[9:20] <lost_soul> thats the US of course, I dunno about other countries
[9:21] <[Saint]> While I agree, tackiling *why* they got there is the primary issue.
[9:21] <[Saint]> Otherwise they'll just go right back.
[9:21] <[Saint]> *tackling
[9:21] <lost_soul> [Saint]: yes, but their are many people that got there within the last few years due to losing their jobs at no fault of their own
[9:21] <[Saint]> Very few people end up homeless because they just decided to be homeless.
[9:21] <lost_soul> then they lost their homes.. etc
[9:21] <[Saint]> There's a contributing factor to address.

[11:55] <[Saint]> Seems I misunderstood.

Maybe when you connect via cable instead of wireless, you are assigned a different IP address which is on the same subnet as the router (ie. 192.168.0.x instead of 192.168.10.x). [23:39] <phire> (2 data lines, clock and 2 sync lines)
[23:40] <phire> chris_99, you can power it by the gpio pins, but be aware you are bypassing the fuse.
[23:40] <chris_99> aha interseting
[23:40] <chris_99> thanks
[23:42] <phire> you can also technically power it by the usb outputs.

[23:45] <gordonDrogon> chris_99, powering via GPIO is OK, but you are recommended to use the same power circuit that the B+ uses...

[23:45] <gordonDrogon> phire, can't do that on a B+
[23:45] * netzfisch (~Thunderbi@e176102221.adsl.alicedsl.de) Quit (Ping timeout: 258 seconds)
[23:46] <plugwash> on a model A or B you can power by backfeeding the USB host ports but that doesn't work on a B+
[23:46] <chris_99> gordonDrogon, what is the power circuit the B+ uses
[23:47] * yoavz (yoavz@yoavz.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:47] <gordonDrogon> chris_99, 2 amp polyfuse and a 'perfect' diode.
[23:48] <chris_99> whats a perfect diode?
[23:48] <plugwash> it's a clever trick involving a matched pair of bipolar transistors and a mosfet to create something that acts like a diode but has very little volt drop
[23:48] <gordonDrogon> chris_99, http://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/schematics/README.md
[23:48] <gordonDrogon> get the 1.2 schematic from that page.
[23:48] <plugwash> theres a partial schematic of the B+ out there (iirc they haven't released the full schematic for some reason) which shows it
[23:49] <chris_99> ah inteeresting plugwash never heard of that
[23:49] <chris_99> oh cheers gordonDrogon i can see that now
[23:50] <gordonDrogon> of-course you don't have to do that - I've used a 7805 in the past on a B2 but the B+ has the potential to take more current if USB things are plugged in.

[23:51] <chris_99> i've bought a load of usb adapters that have a UK plug on heh, but i've taken them abroad so i'm thinking of what to do
[23:51] <plugwash> be careful when trying to power a Pi off a 7805 or similar, the Pi draws a lot more power than a little microcontroller does

[23:52] <plugwash> <chris_99> i've bought a load of usb adapters that have a UK plug on heh, but i've taken them abroad so i'm thinking of what to do <-- can't you just use an adapter to plug them in?
[23:53] <chris_99> yeah, i'd need 10 though, or i could buy a UK long plug thingyjig and plug that into a single adapter
[23:53] * plugwash would take a UK extension lead, cut the plug off and fit a local plug
[23:54] <chris_99> yeah that'd work
[23:54] <chris_99> i wonder if i can even get a 10-way adapter
[23:55] <plugwash> more than 8 way seems rare
[23:55] <gordonDrogon> the 'trick' with a 7805 is to keep the input voltage as low as possible.

[23:56] <plugwash> The trouble with batteries is that their voltage varies a lot over their discharge cycle
[23:56] <plugwash> so if you use a linear reg you waste a lot of the energy either by directly wasting it in the reg or by using only the first part of the discharge cycle
[23:57] <plugwash> gordonDrogon> http://uk.farnell.com/xp-power/sr10s05/switching-regulator-5v-1a-o-p/dp/1861095?Ntt=sr10s05 <-- any particular reason for chosing that over the cheaper TSR 1-2450?
