[0:19] <clever> steve1: some adapters can run in both AP and client mode at the same time
[0:20] <clever> but both must be on the same channel
[0:21] <steve1> clever: do you know what I should look for to determine if an adapter can do that?
[0:21] <clever> trying to re-find it now
[0:21] <clever> there it is
[0:22] <clever> iw phy phy0 interface add new0 type station
[0:22] <clever> something like that
[0:23] * robmorrissey (~robmorris@cpc26-brig15-2-0-cust123.3-3.cable.virginm.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:23] <clever> steve1: i think this answer is also very close to what you want, http://askubuntu.com/questions/318973/how-do-i-create-a-wifi-hotspot-sharing-wireless-internet-connection-single-adap/324785#324785
[0:23] <steve1> ok. I'll check that out. thanks clever
[0:24] <clever> basicaly, the radio firmware on the wifi adapter is able to tune to a single channel, and then accept packets for many modes at once
[0:24] <clever> its also used by monitor mode and packet sniffing, so you can monitor the rf channel while also being connected
[0:24] <CoJaBo> clever: ..does that work with the edimax adaptor?
[0:25] <clever> the link i gave says it only works with adapters having cfg80211 support in the driver
[0:27] <clever> if i run the above iw command on my normal laptop, i now have a new0 interface, along side wlan1
[0:29] * plugwash (~plugwash@97e5bfdf.skybroadband.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:29] <CoJaBo> ..well, that sucks, it outputs nothing :/
[0:29] <clever> thats normal
[0:29] <clever> run iwconfig next
[0:29] <clever> many linux commands will output nothing if they work
[0:29] * almostworking (~almostwor@unaffiliated/almostworking) has joined #raspberrypi

[0:31] <clever> ah
[0:32] <clever> you can still blindly try adding a second interface
[0:32] * teepee (~teepee@gateway/tor-sasl/teepee) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:32] <clever> and see what happens
[0:32] <clever> just run iw phy phy0 interface add new0 type station

[8:18] <[Saint]> (suicidal bathroom wall heater)
[8:19] <nashi> not blue smoke, black smoke of heaters. blue smoke is electronics. ive seen one do worse, burning its own plastic header to the ground. it was an old 50s heater with a radiative alumninum dish on top
[8:19] <nashi> but yeah that is BAD. no fires?
[8:20] <binaryhermit> lol, penis
[8:20] <nashi> huh?? O.o
[8:20] <binaryhermit> sorry, the smoke from that heater kinda resembles a penis pointed straight down
[8:20] <binaryhermit> or maybe I have a dirty mind
[8:21] <nashi> oiye men @@
[8:22] <abnormal> looked like someone peed on the power cord....
[8:24] <[Saint]> the consensus of opinion is that I awoke when it puked its motor coil and heating plates out onto the floor in a firey mess.
[8:24] <abnormal> oh well one lucky incident... just a lot of cleaning and painting...
[8:24] <[Saint]> Quite likely not too long after it started.
[8:24] <nashi> youre lucky it didnt burn the place down, thats scary
[8:24] <[Saint]> Landlord got in a professional cleaning crew shortly after the electrician signed off.

[8:27] <[Saint]> it looked like this, about ~3h after it looked like the other one.
[8:27] <[Saint]> the cleaning crew was amazing.
[8:27] <[Saint]> just a slight scorched bit above the new wall heater that needs repainting.
[8:27] <nashi> that new one is a different model I hope?
[8:27] <[Saint]> indeed.
[8:28] <nashi> yay!
[8:28] <abnormal> just a tad bit more painting to do...
[8:28] <nashi> I got myself a rotozip, no more dremel death for me!
[8:29] <[Saint]> My speculation is that dust from very recent bathroom floor renovation and possible moisture from Ms. [Saint] taking a shower caused a short.
[8:29] <abnormal> I just use a chainsaw...
[8:29] <[Saint]> The electrician took it away for an autopsy/post mortem, but it was pretty much just a pile of copper and goo...so I dunno.
[8:29] <nashi> lol

[8:35] <abnormal> but no one cooks in there tho...
[8:35] <nashi> the heater sure did xD
[8:35] <nashi> honesatly water vapor can carry lots of filth up there and then condense.
[8:36] <nashi> people rarely realize how much filth water carries with it when used to clean oneself.

[11:14] <Mr_Sheesh> What do most people use for a fastish ARM-targetted C compiler? Or cross-compiler? Coding somewhat for a RaspPi project, soon.

[11:18] <mgottschlag> cross compiling C will be a lot faster than compiling on the pi
[11:18] <nashi> anyone know of a good tutorial that tells you the basics of what you can do with a shift register? ive never messed with them.
[11:18] <SpeedEvil> Not for a small project with 4-5K lines.
[11:19] <SpeedEvil> Especially if the project is segmented properly into multiple files with a makefile so only relevant stuff is built
[11:19] <mgottschlag> well, not if you only have one file, but this sounded as if the file was part of a larger projet?
[11:20] <mgottschlag> also, editing code on the pi is much more painful than on a faster device
[11:20] <shiftplusone> nashi, people tend to use io expanders over shift registers nowadays.
[11:20] <mgottschlag> at least with IDEs
[11:21] <shiftplusone> mgottschlag, geany works well enough on the pi. But yeah, I always cross-compile and rsync to the pi

[11:22] <shiftplusone> This is the sort of thing I'm talking about uk.rs-online.com/web/p/product/403563
[11:22] <Mr_Sheesh> SpeedEvil - That's the existing main.c program file ALONE, before I touch it (I've looked at it but it's been a while, I need to count the actual lines, not just guesstimate.) Hour on compiling that, or more, or less? Trying to get a raw 1st guess. (I've dealt with compiling on floppy based systems so if I have to I can just compile at night :P)
[11:22] <shiftplusone> but in any case, you don't need 'tutorials', you need the datasheet.
[11:23] <SpeedEvil> Mr_Sheesh: My first guess would be 2-3 seconds compile
[11:23] <shiftplusone> (but check adafruit for tutorials, if you're using python and wiringpi.com if you're using c)
[11:24] <Mr_Sheesh> There are other files too, but the changes (I think, so far) will all be in the main file. Oh, OK that's not too bad then. Only have been running the one RPi, thinking of swapping it to another one (that I got used) and using my one that's been running well for a dev machine (mainly because the used one's case will work easily for the widget I'm developing :P)
[11:24] <shiftplusone> https://learn.adafruit.com/mcp230xx-gpio-expander-on-the-raspberry-pi
[11:26] <Mr_Sheesh> Shift Regs are easy enough to use; Read the datasheet and look at the timing diagrams, they always need the data steadied up first, then you (almost always edge-)clock the data in, one bit at a time for serial, several bits at once for parallel shift regs
