[0:07] <brian1001> hi everyone
[0:07] * leftyfb (leftyfb@ubuntu/member/leftyfb) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:08] <[Saint]> Hiiiiiii Doctor Nic...errr...um, brian1001
[0:08] * chris_99 (~chris_99@unaffiliated/chris-99/x-3062929) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[0:09] <leftyfb> I'm trying to build a photobooth for Halloween. I'm using the camera module and some pieces of code i've found all around. I'm trying to duplicate this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dR58fIc9Js
[0:09] <leftyfb> At the moment I'm having trouble overlaying the countdown
[0:10] * fatalhalt (~fatalhalt@c-71-201-7-76.hsd1.il.comcast.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:10] <leftyfb> I was using a function I found to overlay random quotes. I replaced the quotes with 3 2 and 1 ... though of course it's displaying those numbers randomly
[0:10] * kielydark is now known as sadkiely
[0:10] <[Saint]> Won't it be kinda...dark? Y'know, 'cos, Halloween?
[0:10] <leftyfb> Also, I'm overlaying by setting the camera preview to 128 transparent ... which I'm not sure is right and doesn't look as good as the above video
[0:10] <[Saint]> Lowlight camera performance is...suboptimal.
[0:11] <[Saint]> (to put it mildly)
[0:11] <leftyfb> [Saint]: it's for a party ... there will be lighting for the pictures .... not that any of this has to do with anything i've mentioned or have been having trouble with
[0:11] <brian1001> does someone here maybe have some tips for hardening the SD card (protecting against data corruption)
[0:12] <leftyfb> brian1001: don't use the SD card for perm storage of important data
[0:12] <[Saint]> Well, excuse me, the next time someone says something I shall reply to that and that PRECISELY.
[0:12] <[Saint]> By word of this guy.
[0:12] * chris_99 (~chris_99@unaffiliated/chris-99/x-3062929) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:13] <[Saint]> Just don't go blaming anyone when the pictures look like ass.
[0:14] <leftyfb> [Saint]: I already had this working for the past few years using a laptop and cheese ... I want to replace that setup with a pi and the camera module. Also, I already told you, I have the lighting situation under control. Not sure why you insist on mentioning it.
[0:15] <leftyfb> brian1001: data corruption of the SD card has to do with the either filesystem not being unmounted properly or the hardware(SD card) failing. There's really nothing you can do to protect the data against those issues other than store the data elsewhere.
[0:15] <[Saint]> I mentioned it once. _Before_ you mentioned anything of the sort.
[0:15] <[Saint]> Not psychic dude.
[0:15] * therebel (~adhd@cake.whatbox.ca) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:16] <[Saint]> If you don't want random people chiming in in your conversations, perhaps being on IRC isn't the best of ideas.
[0:17] <leftyfb> [Saint]: I appreciate help ... when it pertains to the questions asked
[0:18] <[Saint]> As my statement, from the information I had at hand, did.
[0:18] <[Saint]> Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? Is that it? Want someone to grump at?
[0:18] <[Saint]> I'm happy to be that guy, if I must.
[0:19] * kd7jwc (~shantorn@67-5-255-167.ptld.qwest.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[0:19] * saedelaere (~quassel@unaffiliated/saedelaere) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:19] <[Saint]> Look at it from my point of view. For all I knew, you could have said "Oh, gee Internet Stranger, I didn't know that and it will completely defeat the project. Thanks"
[0:20] * Visage (~visage@pdpc/supporter/active/visage) Quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[0:21] <leftyfb> So let me detail my first issue for anyone that is able and willing to help. How would I overlay a countdown timer? I currently have text = quote() randomly displaying my 3 2 and 1 from the quote() function but of course I would like it to count down from 3 instead.
[0:21] * Envil (~meep@95.211.26.40) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:21] <leftyfb> oh and the text is being displayed with screen.blit(font_surf, font_rect)

[0:41] <biberao> hi
[0:41] <biberao> an advise
[0:41] <biberao> i want to have a bunch of videos on my wall
[0:42] <biberao> which kind of screens should i get
[0:42] <biberao> its a 100meters width wall
[0:42] <[Saint]> 100 _meters_?
[0:42] <[Saint]> Thats huge dude.
[0:42] * Delboy (~openwrt@141-136-197-11.dsl.iskon.hr) Quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[0:43] <biberao> i know
[0:43] <biberao> i wanted to cover part of it
[0:43] <biberao> i wanted something cool
[0:43] <biberao> not expensive
[0:43] <biberao> lol
[0:43] <[Saint]> With anything that large I wouldn't even consider screens.
[0:43] <biberao> then?
[0:43] <[Saint]> projection is your friend here.
[0:43] <biberao> but i cant add projectors
[0:44] <[Saint]> this won't be cheap.
[0:44] <biberao> it will blind my customers
[0:44] <[Saint]> not necessarily...
[0:44] <[Saint]> you could angle the projectors above line of sight.
[0:45] <biberao> but still the projection screen
[0:45] <[Saint]> But granted I don't know the layout of the location in question.
[0:45] <biberao> well i gotta ask someone in here
[0:45] * Sonny_Jim (~pi@host31-51-111-223.range31-51.btcentralplus.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
[0:45] <[Saint]> How many screens are we talking?
[0:46] <biberao> maybe 3
[0:46] * PasNox (~pasnox@2a01:e34:ee42:d070:c8c5:f01b:b8e9:e854) Quit (Quit: Leaving - Cross platform IDE http://monkeystudio.org)
[0:46] <[Saint]> across 100m? They would look tiny, and be spaced out at 30m intervals.
[0:47] <biberao> well my bar is big
[0:47] <biberao> lol
[0:47] <[Saint]> a 100m wall would have the ability to make even the largest screens look tiny in comparison. Hmmm.
[0:47] * GentileBen (~RaycisCha@cpc5-lutn10-2-0-cust681.9-3.cable.virginm.net) Quit ()
[0:47] <biberao> im screwed right?
[0:47] <biberao> Lol
[0:48] <[Saint]> I guess that all depends on what your view of "cheap" is.
[0:48] <biberao> well it would cost
[0:48] <biberao> what
[0:48] <biberao> some thousand bucks?
[0:48] * Delboy (~openwrt@183-1.dsl.iskon.hr) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:49] <[Saint]> Something like this.
[0:50] <biberao> ok
[0:50] <biberao> ill get a designer and so on
[0:50] <[Saint]> I'm not too certain on how to tackle a task this large efficiently, without projection.
[0:50] <[Saint]> Generally visual installations that large will use projection as its a lot cheaper than actual large screens.
[0:50] <biberao> i dont mind the projection
[0:51] <biberao> i wanted to know which setup
[0:51] <[Saint]> But as you say, blinding your customers isn't ideal. ;)
[0:51] <[Saint]> If you can't put the projector above their heads, it would be problematic.
[0:51] <[Saint]> people walking in fron, etc.
[0:51] <[Saint]> *front
[0:51] <biberao> i have a space
[0:52] <biberao> where i got my smoke system
[0:52] <biberao> and some lights
[0:52] <biberao> maybe adding it there
[0:53] <[Saint]> You bar sounds as though its well over twice the size of anything we have on offere here...heh.
[0:53] <[Saint]> The longest bar I can think of in my locale is about 30m.
[0:54] <biberao> then i have 2 pool tables
[0:54] <biberao> i have some arcade machines
[0:54] <biberao> blowup dolls
[0:54] <[Saint]> :))
[0:54] <biberao> we have a few saints too
[0:55] <biberao> hihih

[1:03] * owen_ (~owen@180.200.150.71) Quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
[1:04] <leftyfb> biberao: projectors is not the way to go
[1:04] <leftyfb> biberao: get some LED TV's
[1:04] * ponA (Miranda@HSI-KBW-134-3-94-90.hsi14.kabel-badenwuerttemberg.de) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:05] <[Saint]> Screen space vs. cost, projection is surely the way to go.
[1:05] <leftyfb> biberao: projectors aren't that clear with any sort of lighting, they can be noisy(though prob not an issue in a bar), expensive and cost money every 6 - 12 months for new bulbs.
[1:05] * abnormal (~abnormal@247.sub-70-209-129.myvzw.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:06] <[Saint]> tiny LEDs are going to look like pimples on a wall that large.
[1:06] <leftyfb> 10x 50" LED's will be a lot cheaper than half that many projectors
[1:07] <[Saint]> One projector can service many "screens"
[1:07] * kij__ (~shinomori@c-71-235-41-190.hsd1.ct.comcast.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:07] <leftyfb> [Saint]: I have experience with this exactly issue. It's a lot cheaper and smarter to go with screens
[1:08] <[Saint]> It also depends wildly on the look you're going for. FOr example, no one has yet invented a screen at a decent cost that looks even remotely non-crap when stitched into a larger display.
[1:08] <[Saint]> and even 50" on a wall of this magnitude is going to look tiny.
[1:09] <leftyfb> [Saint]: i've build a NOC command center for the largest hosting company in the U.S. We had 9x LCD TV's vs. 2x projectors that were capable of projecting feeds from dozen sources. The projects did not work as well nor were they as easy to manage as the TV's. The cost was 10-fold for the projectors vs the TV's
[1:09] <leftyfb> I don' think biberao mentioned wanting 1 large switched picture
[1:10] <[Saint]> Right. If that's not the case, even the largest consumer screens are going to look tiny I think.
[1:10] <leftyfb> having 10 or so LED's spaced out over 100 meters would look fine each displaying different things or even interacting as objects move across them
[1:11] <[Saint]> 3 50" screens on a ~100m wall may as well not even be there at all.
[1:11] <[Saint]> (note he did say 3)
[1:12] * fatalhalt (~fatalhalt@c-71-201-7-76.hsd1.il.comcast.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:12] <leftyfb> and I suggested 10
[1:12] <[Saint]> Projection vs. screens only works out cost effective to screns when you add the extra 7 units.
[1:13] * [Saint] shrugs

[1:13] * Mikelevel (~MoVeWoRk@unaffiliated/mikelevel) Quit (Quit: Mikelevel)
[1:14] <leftyfb> not if you're talking decent projectors. Anything where you'd want to read text from or be visible in anything other than very low lighting. There's also blinding customers
[1:14] <[Saint]> The latter could be tackled by projection angle, but neither of us know if the locale suits that, granted.

[1:20] <evil_dan2wik> I have a 5 watt solar panel that I bought overseas and it is outputting 27 volt at 0.4 amps. That is 10 watts.
[1:21] * _BigWings_ (~Thunderbi@modemcable167.12-130-66.mc.videotron.ca) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:22] <leftyfb> evil_dan2wik: does it have any wiring/jumpers where you can connect 2 sections of the panel together in parallel? That would cut your voltage in half and double your current
[1:22] * brian1001 (~brian1001@82-171-141-20.ip.telfort.nl) Quit (Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
[1:22] * Hydra_ (~Hydra@5751c98f.skybroadband.com) Quit (Quit: HydraIRC -> http://www.hydrairc.com <- Po-ta-to, boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew.)
[1:23] <leftyfb> evil_dan2wik: you'd still be at ~10W, but probably closer to what you're looking for
[1:24] <evil_dan2wik> no, the panel is 1 panel.
[1:24] <plugwash> are you trying to run a Pi off it?
[1:24] <evil_dan2wik> not yet.
[1:24] <leftyfb> evil_dan2wik: right, but sometimes 1 panel is wired internally to be multiple sections to give you options for output
[1:24] <evil_dan2wik> I will eventually.
[1:25] <evil_dan2wik> The back of the panel says 16.8v and 0.3a
[1:25] <evil_dan2wik> 5w
[1:26] <evil_dan2wik> I guess that in china, the sun doesn't shine as bright.
[1:26] <[Saint]> China has a sun now?
[1:29] <evil_dan2wik> [Saint], when does it not?
[1:30] <[Saint]> Night time.

[1:45] <biberao> advise me which material to get
[1:45] <leftyfb> biberao: Have I done it yet, no. Can I do it, probably and I plan on figure it out
[1:45] <biberao> ok
[1:45] <biberao> advise me when possible
[1:46] <leftyfb> biberao: like I said, the easiest way would be to just take video and crop it into sections and play each section on a different display at the same time
[1:49] <biberao> i might do that yes

[1:49] <biberao> maybe small leds

[5:03] * jalcine prepares for a 101 lesson
[5:03] <evil_dan2wik> jalcine, you need to use /dev/sdx

[5:14] <nerdboy> compressed and managed by the vm infrastructure

[5:16] <[Saint]> I just happen to think that if you're in a situation where you would actually need zRAM, you're /probably/ using the raspi for well beyond its intended purpose and could almost certainly delegate to a more capable machine.
[5:16] <nerdboy> then put a load on and see what happens
[5:17] <[Saint]> But, that's me.

[9:29] <evil_dan2wik> but, that isn't the main issue
[9:29] <evil_dan2wik> I need to set the timezone of this Pi
[9:29] <evil_dan2wik> and then I can go.
[9:30] <evil_dan2wik> of which I have no idea how to do.

[9:33] <skyroveRR> evil_dan2wik: you said you can't ping, and now you say you want to set the TZ, what do you really want to do?
[9:35] <evil_dan2wik> well, nevermind, my time slot here is up.
[9:35] <skyroveRR> Heh.
[9:35] <skyroveRR> I gotta go.
[9:35] <evil_dan2wik> k, see ya
[9:35] <[Saint]> If you want the absolute braindead method, use raspi-config
[9:35] <[Saint]> or refer to my answer from ~40 minutes ago
[9:35] <evil_dan2wik> could have told me that earlier
[9:35] <[Saint]> I did tell you earlier, but I now suspect its over your head.
[9:36] <[Saint]> It was a fault of mine, and I apologize. But I did answer the question.
