[20:10] <jeffreylevesque> do you guys think a raspberry pi would be able to handle a CMS
[20:10] <jeffreylevesque> like drupal
[20:10] <jeffreylevesque> or should i write a web app from scratch?
[20:10] <e^ipi> why wouldn’t it?
[20:11] <pksato> for low usage CMS? ok.
[20:11] <e^ipi> yeah, i guess that’s the question, how hard are you hammering it?
[20:11] * teff (~teff@client-86-9-240-4.oxfd-bam-1.adsl.virginm.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
[20:11] <jeffreylevesque> drupal is a little much, maybe?
[20:11] <jeffreylevesque> maybe 3-5 ppl at a time
[20:12] <jeffreylevesque> but, the drupal site may execute python scripts
[20:12] <jeffreylevesque> and perform computataions
[20:12] <e^ipi> raspi is way more powerful than webservers 10 years ago
[20:12] <jeffreylevesque> sorry for the typo
[20:12] * lpax (~lpax@unaffiliated/lpax) has joined #raspberrypi

[20:13] <e^ipi> it’ll be fine
[20:13] * samrat (~samrat@123.236.183.195) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[20:13] <Bilby> file IO and ram is probably more limiting than cpu
[20:13] <Bilby> but yeah, should be fine
[20:13] * chris_99 (~chris_99@unaffiliated/chris-99/x-3062929) Quit (Ping timeout: 255 seconds)
[20:15] * takkie (~takkie@dhcp-089-098-119-035.chello.nl) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[20:15] <pksato> or Internet connection.
[20:15] * Geminizer (~Geminizer@cpe-76-180-17-14.buffalo.res.rr.com) Quit (Quit: Linkinus - http://linkinus.com)
[20:16] <ppq> <e^ipi> raspi is way more powerful than webservers 10 years ago <-- seriously? i don't think so
[20:16] <ppq> more like 15 to 20 years
[20:17] * j00r_ma73 (~Buddy@88.200.150.46) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[20:17] <e^ipi> yeah maybe, i’m old :-/
[20:17] <pksato> low end webservers.
[20:17] <Bilby> for basic servers he's pretty close
[20:18] <e^ipi> I swear we were buying athlon 700’s 10 years ago but maybe closer to 15
[20:18] * oxhak (~OxHaK@unaffiliated/oxhak) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[20:18] * iBooyaa (~iBooyaa@213.205.227.173) Quit (Quit: doh!)
[20:18] <Adran> e^ipi: Thats closer to 15 or more
[20:18] * j00r_ma73 (~Buddy@88.200.150.46) has joined #raspberrypi
[20:19] <ppq> intel core 2 happened 8 years ago
[20:19] <ppq> just for scale :p
[20:20] <Adran> 10 years ago was the age of the P4
[20:20] * netzfisch (~Thunderbi@e176107014.adsl.alicedsl.de) has joined #raspberrypi
[20:20] <Adran> The space heaters ;)
[20:20] <NedScott> well, I'm sure 10 years ago someone was using a 10 year old web server :D
[20:20] <pksato> I have a firewall running on a 333MHz PII. 35Mbps vdsl link. arp show 77 hosts.
[20:21] * takkie (~takkie@dhcp-089-098-119-035.chello.nl) has joined #raspberrypi
[20:22] * Encrypt (~Chuck-nor@AMontsouris-553-1-49-48.w92-151.abo.wanadoo.fr) Quit (Quit: Quitte)
[20:23] <e^ipi> NedScott: god, 10 years ago people still had sunfire V120’s in service
[20:23] * samrat (~samrat@123.236.183.195) has joined #raspberrypi
[20:25] <e^ipi> PIO disks and everything
[20:25] <pksato> main limitation of RPI is lack of high speed bus like pci-e.
[20:25] * Fishy__ is now known as Fishy_
[20:25] * Fishy_ is now known as Fishy
[20:25] <Bilby> so the best numbers i can find are ~ 9700 mips for a P4 EE in 2003, and 847 MIPS for a raspi
[20:26] <Bilby> granted it doesn't take into account a lot of other variables, but there you have it
[20:26] <e^ipi> wildly different architectures, MIPS isn’t really helpful
[20:26] <Bilby> yeah
[20:26] <Bilby> there's not really any good valuation for data throughput :(
[20:26] <e^ipi> you can retire noops until the cows come home
[20:27] * chris_99 (~chris_99@unaffiliated/chris-99/x-3062929) has joined #raspberrypi
[20:27] <e^ipi> regardless, a rpi should be able to handle a small workgroup’s drupal
[20:28] <Bilby> indeed
[20:28] * mgottschlag (~quassel@reactos/tester/phoenix64) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[20:28] <jeffreylevesque> I'm building a interface to a device from a lab
[20:28] <jeffreylevesque> does some computations on a Pi
[20:28] <NedScott> it's possible to get the camera module for as low as $15, so a model A+ + Camera module is an even more attractive security camera :D
[20:29] <jeffreylevesque> so, i'm thinking straight php / python site
[20:29] <jeffreylevesque> or drupal
[20:29] * taza (~taza@unaffiliated/taza) has joined #raspberrypi
[20:29] <e^ipi> or nodejs&express or whatever, it’s half a dozen people sporatically hitting a website
[20:30] <Bilby> yeah, whatever is easiest to implement
[20:30] * OldHoster (~TheDingy@nv-67-232-137-57.dhcp.embarqhsd.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[20:30] * GrimKriegor (~GrimKrieg@a79-169-136-76.cpe.netcabo.pt) has joined #raspberrypi
[20:31] <e^ipi> fwiw i’ve got a nodejs+express thing running on my pi b+ with some sensors attached feeding data in to influxdb, and the web frontend reads from influx
[20:31] <e^ipi> so, it can handle the work...
[20:31] <e^ipi> there’s only 3 of us hitting it though, and not very often
[20:32] * Kymru is now known as zz_Kymru

[23:17] <Demon_Jester> Hey guys, I currently have one of my internal hard drives on a sata to usb connection with external power source, I was thinking to hook it to my rpi and using it as a file server, has anyone attempted this?
[23:17] <Demon_Jester> and were they successful?
[23:19] * Noldorin (~noldorin@unaffiliated/noldorin) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:19] <Bilby> sure, at that point it's just another usb external drive as far as the pi is concerned

[23:21] <Demon_Jester> @bilby ok I figured it would be like that, I will see if I can fabricate external closure for it.
[23:24] <Bilby> It may be cheaper to just buy a cheap USB enclosure

[23:24] <Bilby> or find one that someone has shucked the original drive from
[23:24] <Demon_Jester> I may do that, too.
[23:26] <Bilby> I reccomend screwing the drive to a piece of wood with 3-inch drywall screws to ensure a secure fit :D
[23:26] <Demon_Jester> 3 inch screws
[23:26] <Demon_Jester> lol
[23:26] <Demon_Jester> might as well take a hammer to my HDD
[23:26] <Bilby> ;)
[23:27] <Bilby> at one point i had a drill press with a good metal bit, that's how i wiped drives with sensitive data
[23:29] <Demon_Jester> drill press eh? funny thing is, I have this motor from those fans they have in the bathrooms I was thinking of welding hole saw bit to go through HDD but thing is idk if the motor is strong enough.
[23:29] <Bilby> probably not without some gearing down
[23:30] <Bilby> I've also used hammers, but it's messy and you still have to manually disassemble the drive
[23:30] <Demon_Jester> fucker is heavy though
[23:30] <Bilby> if you have a vise you can use a reciprocating saw
[23:31] <Demon_Jester> maybe
[23:31] * chaotic (~chaotic@unaffiliated/chaotic) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:31] <Bilby> most drill presses have at least a half-horse motor with maybe a 1:2 ratio pully

[23:33] <Demon_Jester> hmm maybe I can find table top drill press and have it automatically push it self down
[23:33] <Bilby> maybe
[23:33] * thomasreggi (~thomasreg@cpe-72-229-133-225.nyc.res.rr.com) Quit ()
[23:33] <Bilby> thankfully i don't have to wipe too many drives, I usually build up a little stack and then do them at once
[23:34] <Bilby> i've also used a magnetic tape demagnitizer but it's a less sure thing
[23:34] <Demon_Jester> yeah people are like u se magnets and here I am thinking they can still recover it
[23:37] <Bilby> not if you use a strong enough one
[23:37] <Bilby> but it has to be pretty overkill to be sure
[23:37] <Bilby> if the drive is still live you can always connect it and do a wipe which is fine too, especially if you want to reuse the drive
[23:37] <Bilby> but most of the ones i have are oooooold ass drives that have died or aren't worth saving
