[1:32] <kenw2> Is there anyway to pause a raspberry pi upgrade?
[1:32] <abnormal> yeh, unplug it
[1:33] <kenw2> abnormal: won't that damage it?
[1:33] * Macuser (~textual@unaffiliated/macuser) Quit (Quit: My MacBook Pro has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[1:33] <abnormal> probably... lol... I would let it finnish and then reinstall it
[1:34] <kenw2> shit, this update will take 2 days
[1:34] <abnormal> you have noods on the SD card?
[1:34] <kenw2> Yes
[1:35] <abnormal> ok then you can stop it and then press shift key while booting it up and it will load the original OS you started up first time.
[1:35] <kenw2> stop it?
[1:36] <abnormal> do you have a very slow connection?
[1:36] <ShorTie> is it just downloading or is it installing ??
[1:36] <kenw2> installing it
[1:36] <abnormal> ahhh
[1:36] <abnormal> something is not right
[1:37] <kenw2> Anyway to put it on pause maybe
[1:37] <abnormal> should only take about ten minutes to install an OS on pi.
[1:37] <ShorTie> not really
[1:37] <kenw2> its taking me forever :((
[1:38] <abnormal> what OS are you installing?
[1:38] <ShorTie> how many packages was it updating ??
[1:38] <kenw2> abnormal the os is already on the SD card, I'm just updating it
[1:38] <abnormal> and what way are you doing it?
[1:38] <ShorTie> didn't think there was that many
[1:38] <abnormal> me neither.
[1:39] <kenw2> sudo-apt get upgrade, its like 37% in 2 hours
[1:39] <abnormal> unless it's a real old Noobs.
[1:39] <ShorTie> how much free space did you have ??
[1:39] <kenw2> ShorTie w
[1:39] <kenw2> well if it helps I got a kit from amazon
[1:39] <kenw2> canakit
[1:40] <ShorTie> how big is the sdcard ??
[1:40] <kenw2> wait maybe I can try reboot
[1:40] <abnormal> what site you updating from?
[1:42] <kenw2> I just used sudo apt-get upgrade from the terminal
[1:42] <kenw2> I have the b+ with wifi
[1:44] <ShorTie> you install any other os's other then raspbian ??
[1:44] <abnormal> I see... what is the size of SD card? ShorTie asked you that.
[1:45] <kenw2> 8 GB
[1:46] <kenw2> ShorTie: I think it had some preinstalled
[1:46] <kenw2> I'm thinking of just unplugging the thing xP
[1:46] <kenw2> wait
[1:47] * ShorTie holds on
[1:47] * abnormal too
[1:47] <kenw2> How can check the progress of the upgrade? I closed the terminal window
[1:47] <abnormal> reopen it
[1:47] <ShorTie> you killed it if it wasn't in a screen sesion i believe
[1:47] <abnormal> lol
[1:48] <kenw2> it was in screen
[1:48] <abnormal> never close term while it is doing its thing, silly
[1:48] * Noldorin (~noldorin@unaffiliated/noldorin) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:48] <ShorTie> 'if' it was, you can reattach to it
[1:49] <kenw2> shortie how would I do that
[1:49] * x1337807x (~x1337807x@c-76-115-7-194.hsd1.or.comcast.net) Quit (Quit: My MacBook Pro has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[1:49] * justicefries (~fries@c-107-2-139-89.hsd1.co.comcast.net) Quit (Quit: My Mac has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[1:50] <ShorTie> i forget the command of the top of my head
[1:50] <ShorTie> you installed screen, i don't think it comes installed
[1:51] <ShorTie> plus you have to start it first if i remember right
[1:51] <ShorTie> to get a session going
[1:51] <kenw2> I give up, I'll just unplug it especially since it just froze
[1:51] <abnormal> well even if you stopped it, restart it and it will continue to finnish what is missing....
[1:52] <kenw2> here goes nothing
[1:52] <abnormal> have fun and don't interrup it again...
[1:53] <kenw2> recovery mode interesting
[1:53] <ShorTie> think apt-get will tell you to do something special to proceed
[1:53] <kenw2> guess I could just use recovery mode if I screw it up too much
[1:54] <ShorTie> if you get to some kind of command prompt, do a 'df -h' and see what it says
[1:54] <kenw2> Ok
[1:55] <kenw2> which filesystem?
[1:55] * lupinedk is now known as Lupinedk
[1:59] <ShorTie> whats my options, lol.
[1:59] <abnormal> when you are done reinstalling it: apt-get update && apt-get upgrade. do not interrupt the process while in terminal. after that is done, do apt-get update again without the upgrade. then you should have a good install.
[1:59] <ShorTie> got any partitions that are full ??
[2:01] <ShorTie> do you really use NOOBS ??
[2:02] <ShorTie> if raspbian is your os of choice, i'd just reimage the sdcard with it
[2:03] <ShorTie> NOOBS is like cool, but you really need a different sdcard for each os, imho
[2:04] <kenw2> yeah I'm reimaging it now
[2:04] * neionz (~lolwhat@gateway/tor-sasl/lolwhat) Quit (Quit: neionz)
[2:04] <kenw2> I just won't update next time :^)
[2:05] <ShorTie> thru NOONS or with just the image ??

[3:05] <Twist-> hispeed67: openelec and raspbmc are the two main canned media center distributions.
[3:05] <Twist-> hispeed67: toss a quarter.
[3:05] <hispeed67> thanks twist..
[3:06] <hispeed67> are they also full blown linux distros?
[3:06] <Twist-> no.
[3:06] <Twist-> for that, just start with standard raspbian.
[3:07] <Twist-> it can be useful to have several SD cards and just switch around.
[3:07] <hispeed67> i have several SD cards. , but they are blank..
[3:07] <Twist-> http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/
[3:09] * yeticry (~yeticry@124.113.161.70) has joined #raspberrypi

[3:11] * MoreFeeYouS (~MoreFeeYo@BSN-142-170-48.static.siol.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[3:12] <Twist-> Yes, or you can use NOOBS for a drag and drop install. This is all covered in the documentation.
[3:13] <hispeed67> i didn't get any documentation in my kit..
[3:13] <Twist-> Follow the links I just provided.
[3:13] <hispeed67> what is the faster interface? the SD or usb?
[3:14] <hispeed67> k.. just read about RiscOS..
[3:14] * yeticry (~yeticry@124.113.161.70) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[3:14] <hispeed67> i have a 500g and 1000g external h/d's for it.
[3:14] <hispeed67> should i put the os on one of those?
[3:16] <Twist-> Probably not for your first attempt. The Pi can't boot off a USB drive, so getting your OS on one requires a bit of fiddling.
[3:16] * yeticry (~yeticry@124.113.161.70) has joined #raspberrypi
[3:17] <Twist-> you *can* get your root filesystem on a USB volume. It's just not the standard config.. might be good to get your bearings with Linux first.
[3:18] <hispeed67> haha.. i have several years linux experience..
[3:18] <hispeed67> since 94..
[3:18] <ShorTie> not much fiddling really
[3:19] <hispeed67> new to ARM architecture, but have run linux on a DEC Alpha back in the day.
[3:19] <hispeed67> and on a sparc 10
[3:19] <Twist-> Ah.
[3:19] <ShorTie> how big is your power supply ??

[3:22] <ShorTie> sweet
[3:22] <ShorTie> gotta add "safe_mode_gpio=4" and "max_usb_current=1" to /boot/config.txt to get full usb current
[3:23] <hispeed67> alright. put that on the list.. :)
[3:25] <hispeed67> gonna try raspbian and raspbmc on different SD
[3:25] <ShorTie> for hdd os, write image to hdd, copy /boot to sdcard, change mmcblk0p2 to sda2 in /boot/cmdline.txt
[3:26] <ShorTie> and add those other 2
[3:26] <hispeed67> you said /boot/cmdline.txt for one and /boot/config.txt for other..
[3:27] <ShorTie> then you need to expand filesystem manually
[3:27] <ShorTie> yup.
[3:27] <hispeed67> so /boot has to be on the sdcard and pointers to sda* (depending on partition)...
[3:28] <ShorTie> sorry, contents of /boot or the fat partition
[3:28] <hispeed67> i think ill keep everything on the SD card for safety sake.... then i don't have to worry about if i disconnect the external drives to move them...
[3:28] <ShorTie> or just write image to both i guess is the easiest
[3:29] * Noldorin (~noldorin@unaffiliated/noldorin) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)

[3:33] <hispeed67> just finding out there are different speeds for SD cards.. how do i tell what class SD card i haz?
[3:34] <ShorTie> truely does make a diff, just so > 4
[3:34] <ShorTie> truely doesn't make a diff, just so > 4

[3:35] <ShorTie> normall it is a # in a C on the sdcard
[3:35] <eatyourguitar> has someone already compiled it custom?
[3:36] <hispeed67> haha.. i thought that was a copyright symbol
[3:37] <NightMonkey> Anyone else having grief with MP3 playback being s.l.o.w.e.d. d.o.w.n. ?
