[0:17] <daynaskully> Does anyone know if there's a solution to the whole raspbmc stuck at R logo? I've tried 2 pies; 3 sd cards; 3 power supplies and nothing fixes it -- is it just a broken repository or something?

[0:21] * xreal (~xreal@unaffiliated/xreal) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:22] <daynaskully> nice didnt know that existed
[0:22] <xreal> I've used ext2 on my new 16 GB USB2 flash drive and that's the DD result: 16777216 bytes (17 MB) copied, 37.6666 s, 445 kB/s
[0:22] <xreal> What the hell is wrong here? :D
[0:22] * leichtgewicht (~leichtgew@pd284e95d.osaknt01.ap.so-net.ne.jp) Quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
[0:24] <shiftplusone> xreal: 'used ext2'? what's the dd output meant to reflect?
[0:25] <xreal> shiftplusone: damn small wirting speed :)
[0:25] <xreal> shiftplusone: writing*
[0:25] <xreal> shiftplusone: oh my, "slow speed".
[0:26] <shiftplusone> what bs= param did you pass?
[0:26] <xreal> shiftplusone: dd if=/dev/zero of=tempfile bs=1M count=1024 conv=fdatasync,notrunc
[0:26] <xreal> shiftplusone: but it's equal for every size.
[0:26] <xreal> shiftplusone: via samba from Windows it's also 445 KB/s.
[0:26] * Macuser (~textual@unaffiliated/macuser) Quit (Quit: My MacBook Pro has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[0:27] <xreal> shiftplusone: my old Verbatim USB drive was 10 MB/s from samba network.
[0:27] <xreal> 8.5-9.7
[0:27] <shiftplusone> ah, don't know. I had this issue yesterday, but only because I left out bs=5M.
[0:27] <xreal> shiftplusone: perhaps the drive is broken?
[0:27] <xreal> shiftplusone: drive = thumb drive / flash drive / usb stick ... whatever you call it all around the world :)
[0:27] <shiftplusone> or it's running in usb 1 mode or something... no idea really.
[0:28] <xreal> shiftplusone: uh!
[0:28] <xreal> shiftplusone: good hint.
[0:28] <xreal> shiftplusone: usb 1-1.2: new high-speed USB device number 4 using dwc_otg

[0:31] * ShapeShifter499 (~Raansu@unaffiliated/shapeshifter499) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:36] <cyberpolice> how can i make a backup of pi and files so that i can just get a new microsd and usb flash drive and do something to them and put them in to pi and be up and running as if nothing happened?
[0:37] * Encrypt (~Chuck-nor@AMontsouris-553-1-57-169.w92-151.abo.wanadoo.fr) Quit (Quit: Sleeping time!)
[0:38] <shiftplusone> it's probably best to learn how the pi boots, what linux needs and how partitions and filesystems work. Then you can make an informed decision on what the best way to make backups is for you.
[0:39] <cyberpolice> usually on a normal pc, i would use a usb livecd and then just image the drives from there and copy the image files for safekeeping
[0:39] <cyberpolice> but i dont think i can do this on a pi
[0:40] <shiftplusone> you can
[0:40] <cyberpolice> pi can do livecds? on usb?
[0:40] * DoctorBud (~DoctorBud@63-155-134-197.eugn.qwest.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:40] <shiftplusone> Well, you can run the livecd/usb or just your installed linux distro on your pc
[0:41] <shiftplusone> and backup the sd card however you want.
[0:41] * DoctorBud (~DoctorBud@63-155-134-197.eugn.qwest.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:41] <cyberpolice> is ther a way to do it all on pi
[0:41] <shiftplusone> something like partclone would be great, since it doesn't save the 'empty' space like dd would.
[0:41] <cyberpolice> without removing the sdcard
[0:41] <shiftplusone> yeah, you can have a rootfs on usb for that purpose.
[0:42] <cyberpolice> and without removing a usb containing rootfs
[0:42] <cyberpolice> can i do it like that
[0:42] <cyberpolice> the pi is unreachable
[0:42] <shiftplusone> I mean rootfs on usb to act like the 'livecd'
[0:42] <cyberpolice> oh
[0:43] <shiftplusone> you can even use the same mechanism NOOBS uses to boot into it without having to modify your cmdline.txt every time.
[0:43] * ShapeShifter499 (~Raansu@unaffiliated/shapeshifter499) Quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[0:43] * lupinedk is now known as Lupinedk
[0:44] * woox2k (~error@178.23.118.249) Quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
[0:44] <shiftplusone> That's actually an interesting idea.... a safe, unattended, automatic sd card backup system.
[0:44] * iamjarvo (~textual@c-69-249-187-177.hsd1.nj.comcast.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:44] * willmore doesn't even know how to explain things at that level anymore. :( 23 years of linux and I've forgotten a lot. ;(
[0:44] * Armand (~armand@2a01:9cc0:40:6:e8d4:3980:7497:41ce) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[0:45] <shiftplusone> willmore: what do you mean?
[0:45] * DrBrownBear (~DrBrownbe@gateway/vpn/privateinternetaccess/drbrownbear) has left #raspberrypi
[0:45] <willmore> I don't think I could help someone with a problem like that. I'm so used to knowing what I know that bridging that gap may be beyond me, now. :(
[0:46] <willmore> Noone's fault but mine.
[0:46] <ppq> you're just too good for us
[0:46] <ppq> ;)
[0:46] <ppq> scnr
[0:46] * willmore laughs
[0:46] <willmore> I don't think 'good' is the right word.
[0:47] <willmore> Old, inured...
[0:47] <shiftplusone> Just too smart to talk to us plebs? Is that it? =P
[0:47] * willmore sighs
[0:47] <shiftplusone> (I know what you mean)
[0:48] * samB__ (~samB__@cpc22-thor5-2-0-cust140.14-2.cable.virginm.net) Quit (Quit: samB__)
[0:48] <willmore> Nooo!!!!
[0:48] <willmore> Not samB___!
[0:48] <willmore> Sorry, always wanted to do that.
[0:49] * willmore shouts Stella!!!!!
[0:49] * DMackey puts in earplugs
[0:49] <willmore> And, for once, doesn't mean a TIA.
[0:49] <DMackey> :)
[0:49] <willmore> Good call.
[0:49] <stnsi|sleep> cyberpolice: If you're using Windows, Win32DiskImager can backup your sd card to an img
[0:50] <cyberpolice> its easy to do backups once you remove the sdcard and usb drive (if you put rootfs on usb)
[0:50] <cyberpolice> i was more itnerested in the remote backups
[0:50] <cyberpolice> and automation
[0:50] * stnsi|sleep is now known as seitensei
[0:50] <willmore> cyberpolice, hacked eye-fi card?
[0:50] * esas (~esas@unaffiliated/esas) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:50] <willmore> hacked eye-fi card that did constant block level rsync...
[0:51] <cyberpolice> im not famliar with this. what is this?
[0:51] <seitensei> cyberpolice: Maybe you could make a fork of Berryboot
[0:51] <seitensei> https://github.com/maxnet/berryboot
[0:51] * cyberpolice clicks
[0:52] <willmore> It's an SD that sync's .jpg files over wi-fi to another host.
[0:52] <seitensei> http://www.berryterminal.com/doku.php/berryboot
[0:52] <willmore> Hmm, the apostrophe was not needed.
[0:52] <willmore> Stop saying berryboot, it's making me hungry.
[0:52] <seitensei> Berryboot is a minimal linux install on the SD that operates as a bootloader of sorts
[0:52] <seitensei> it can then launch an image on the SD, or USB
[0:52] <seitensei> launch/boot into
[0:53] <seitensei> image more like install
[0:53] * willmore is having flashbacks to his Neoware thin clients.
[0:53] <cyberpolice> hm
[0:53] * willmore misses his neowares
[0:53] * darkavenger_afk is now known as darkavenger
[0:53] <seitensei> but you have a minimal linux that handles automating backups and restores (you can add whatever you need to it, I'd assume, like network access)
[0:53] <willmore> he arises...
[0:54] <willmore> brb, have to teach the wife how to use a BT speaker with her tablet.
[0:54] <willmore> shiftplusone, every time I think I'm out, they keep *pulling me back*!
[0:54] <omfgtora> using something like http://www.homegenie.it/ how does one automate lights? do you have to buy a special outlet adapter?
[0:55] <omfgtora> or do you have to have specific lights>

[3:01] <ali1234> it's a small circuit board with an even smaller chip on it
[3:01] <ali1234> the tiny chip would be hard to solder by hand, so they put it on a board with larger contacts

[3:03] <shndns> ok I was just wondering because the kit I had to get for school has a breakoutboard with it and I just wasn't sure what it was for.
[3:03] <ali1234> so i've decided the adafruit motor shield v2 is kind of meh

[3:04] <ali1234> it only does PWM from 40Hz to 1000Hz, which makes the motors scream
[3:04] <ali1234> got to find something better i think

[5:46] <q_a_z_steve> Weird, why do I think I have seen some release that only had Raspbian?
[5:47] <shiftplusone> because only raspbian is included to be installed offline.
[5:48] <q_a_z_steve> So if I want the choices I should use Lite. Cool. Wasn't there functionality somewhere to get network stuff going right from the NOoBS menus? I think there were options even for WiPi once, right?

[5:56] <shiftplusone> no, you don't have to use lite, those will show up in the normal version as long as the network is detected.

[5:57] <q_a_z_steve> Ok.

[6:01] <abnormal> I don't buy wipi... I buy the Ourlink from Adafruit.com
[6:02] <q_a_z_steve> Here's a question, why does Raspbian install from NOoBS speed up over time? I seem to remember it starts low like 1MB/s then moves up to 1.8 by the end.
[6:02] <abnormal> wipi's have failed on me...
[6:02] <abnormal> that's normal

[6:07] <q_a_z_steve> Hmm. That is something to keep in mind. But anyway, the writing to an SD should be constant, no? I'm actually experiencing way worse variance right now with Apple-Pi-Baker. Started out imaging at maybe 35MBs now down to 7?
[6:07] <q_a_z_steve> Mbs rather
[6:11] * JlRd (~jlrd@ip68-110-113-182.ph.ph.cox.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[6:12] * gorideyourbike (~gorideyou@cpe-74-135-64-61.swo.res.rr.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[6:14] <shiftplusone> q_a_z_steve: there are all kinds of reasons for that.
[6:15] <q_a_z_steve> k
[6:15] <shiftplusone> For example, at the start there may be a burst in speed as things are loaded into memory, but flushing things to disk will actually take longer so the speed will drop off drastically.
[6:15] <q_a_z_steve> I thought of that.
[6:18] <gorideyourbike> does anyone know if the piface control and display works with the A+?
[6:19] <gorideyourbike> if not the piface then an easy way to add buttons/switches?
[6:19] <q_a_z_steve> Should be fine, GPIO is the same.
[6:20] <gorideyourbike> cool
[6:20] * shum (~sdothum@207.112.100.227) has joined #raspberrypi
[6:20] <gorideyourbike> next question, anyone know of an A+/piface C&d compatible case?
[6:20] <q_a_z_steve> adafruit
[6:21] <q_a_z_steve> if any.
[6:21] <q_a_z_steve> some of the cases hate hats. I know I couldn't fit my GPIO mounted TFT.
[6:23] <q_a_z_steve> Probably just google piface case. Should get you all the options. Since piface is meant to go right on top. I forget, does piface give you access to the GPIO again, at all? or does it steal them for it's own use and no one else?
[6:24] <q_a_z_steve> hey shiftplusone, do you know how to change the timezone in Openelec?
[6:24] <shiftplusone> I assume it's somewhere in the settings, but no, I haven't used it in ages.
[6:26] <ShorTie> might ask in #openelec
[6:26] <q_a_z_steve> I hunted for it the other day, couldn't for the life of me find anywhere. There's three NTP slots, but it's not like that would change anything except to get a more accurate UTC.
[6:26] <q_a_z_steve> ShorTie: I have. It's all too quiet over there.
[6:27] <gorideyourbike> q_a_z_steve not sure about the access. so far I could only find B+ cases that wrapped the piface
[6:28] <q_a_z_steve> Hmm. that will be a difference. Check MCM and Element14, but adafruit has to have something...
[6:29] <q_a_z_steve> Amazon maybe? I just got a vilros case for my B+ cheaper than some others sell the pi.
[6:29] <q_a_z_steve> s/for/with
[6:29] <ShorTie> did you ask Mr.Google, he has answer to most everything
[6:29] <gorideyourbike> adafruit has some nice lcd/key pad combos...all sold out :(
[6:32] <q_a_z_steve> gorideyourbike: depending on your cabling needs coming out from the piface, you may just end up 3d printing what you need. So for starters maybe just buy a GPIO extender with a lame A+ case that leaves the GPIO open, piface outside for the time being.
[6:32] <gorideyourbike> that's what I'm thinking.
[6:32] <q_a_z_steve> I find orange to be cheap. Literally, orange plastic.
[6:33] <q_a_z_steve> ShorTie: I'm on their faq and stuff, but not getting much closer.

[11:00] <woox2k> even wifi signals can mess it up

[11:01] <woox2k> 3g modems near pi make it even worse (tried it with it being 2m away from the pi)
[11:02] <woox2k> after shielding the pi properly all of the problems i was having disappeared

[21:47] <shiftplusone> cyberpolice: sure, but you're mostly on your own in figuring out how you want to approach it. It's easy enough to mount the rootfs as read-only but some things will want to write anyway... it's up to you to figure out whether you want to disable those things entirely, let them write to tmpfs or maybe to an overlay fs.
