[0:26] * ztaale (~bleh@ti0098a400-1761.bb.online.no) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:28] <seitensei> Anyone know if I can send audio into the RPi and to the output using the PWM pins?
[0:29] <pksato> ah?
[0:31] <seitensei> So I have an audio board, which has stereo audio- but no 3.5mm jack (or any, actually)
[0:31] * Tenkawa (~arakeen@unaffiliated/tenkawa) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:31] <seitensei> and was wondering if I could pipe that through the Raspberry Pi's PWM pins
[0:31] <pksato> input?
[0:31] <pksato> you want to capture audio?
[0:32] <seitensei> pksato: I want to pipe audio from another device to the Raspberry Pi's 3.5mm jack
[0:32] <seitensei> I know that the RPi uses the PWM pins to handle stero audio
[0:32] <pksato> that problem?
[0:32] <seitensei> *stereo
[0:32] <seitensei> So I'm just wondering if it was possible to passthrough the RPi
[0:32] <kisak> there are some audio forwarding daemons that will do it over the network
[0:32] * spangles (~johnmurra@host86-155-213-31.range86-155.btcentralplus.com) Quit (Quit: spangles)
[0:32] <pksato> rpi audio use PWM hardware. and works like any other audio device.
[0:33] * D-Boy (~D-Boy@unaffiliated/cain) Quit (Excess Flood)
[0:33] <seitensei> kisak: The board I'm using doesn't have network at all ^^
[0:33] <kisak> oh, it's a model A?
[0:33] <pksato> that board? rpi?
[0:33] <seitensei> No, not the raspberry pi, the audio board
[0:33] <Bilby> seitensei so you're trying to record from an audio source into the pi?
[0:33] <pksato> a USB audio dongle?
[0:34] <seitensei> Not record, but passthrough
[0:34] <Bilby> so into the pi, then back out? why?
[0:34] <seitensei> pksato: Nope. It's a soundboard
[0:34] <kisak> seitensei: are you able to record from that board?
[0:34] <seitensei> Bilby: I don't have speakers laying around that I can gut
[0:34] <Bilby> so you're just trying to use the pi like a really complex adapter cord?
[0:35] <Bilby> o_o
[0:35] <seitensei> kisak: I can toss ogg and wav files on it through usb
[0:35] <pksato> if is a standard alsa compatible soundcard, just use any stream copy program.
[0:35] <seitensei> pksato: The way I can connect it to an output is with two wires- one for left audio, one for right
[0:35] * theshadow (~theshadow@24.8.4.50) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:35] * Milenko yawns
[0:36] * Bilby pops a peanut in Milenko's mouth
[0:36] <pksato> I really not understand.
[0:36] <seitensei> Bilby: It's so that I can use the RPi's GPIO for triggering other things, since the sound board gives me 8 triggers
[0:37] <seitensei> pksato: https://www.adafruit.com/products/2341
[0:37] <Bilby> ohah
[0:38] * Encrypt (~Chuck-nor@AMontsouris-553-1-116-238.w92-151.abo.wanadoo.fr) Quit (Quit: Sleeping time!)
[0:38] * Milenko starts to suffocate and swell
[0:38] <Bilby> no, sound is going to go directly from this device to your speakrs / amplifier, not back to the pi
[0:38] <Milenko> (you can hear garbled speach EPPY EPPY)
[0:38] * Bilby mumbles something about useless helicopter parents as he stabs Milenko with an epi pen
[0:38] <Milenko> *gasps*
[0:38] <seitensei> Pi doesn't need to be aware of audio, other than what is needed to move the audio data to the 3.5mm
[0:38] <thescatman> I've got 2 mins before I have to go, am trying to change the resolution mupen64plus (an emulator) is running, how could I get to the command line of that? :/
[0:39] <Milenko> Nah man, not allergic to peanuts. As you through the peanut it hit a bee.
[0:39] <Bilby> I've worked in education. stabbing kids with an epi pen is like the first thing you learn
[0:39] <Milenko> threw*
[0:39] <ozzzy> I always found a Parker pen worked better
[0:39] <Bilby> thescatman no help here sorry
[0:39] <thescatman> aw :[
[0:39] <Bilby> Milenko lol
[0:39] <thescatman> was on the off chance one of you knew how to get into the terminal of an emulator
[0:40] <Bilby> seitensei what you're proposing will cause you no end of grief in the effort to avoid buying a $2 part
[0:40] <pksato> still not understand.
[0:40] <Bilby> thescatman ctrl+alt+f4?
[0:40] * teepee (~teepee@94.100.18.130) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[0:40] <Bilby> / other fkeys
[0:40] <Milenko> You guys hear the great news?
[0:40] <thescatman> I'll try it
[0:40] <Milenko> Mutant Football League is going to be playable at GDC.
[0:40] <Milenko> :D
[0:41] <Bilby> pksato he wants to run the audio in the GPIO pins and out the standard audio connector so he can plug regular computer speakers into it. IE use it just for the jack
[0:42] * jazzzu (~jazzzu@D97B7B1C.cm-3-4b.dynamic.ziggo.nl) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:42] <Bilby> seitensei the one with the amp is $5. just get that one?
[0:42] <thescatman> Bilby, the only one that does anything is ctrl alt f7
[0:42] <thescatman> but that closes the emulator :L
[0:42] * D-Boy (~D-Boy@unaffiliated/cain) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:42] <Bilby> :(
[0:42] <seitensei> Bilby: I could add an app for the audio board, but that then brings up a problem of where to fit the speaker for the Pi and the speaker for the board
[0:42] <Bilby> sorry good sir
[0:42] * gbaman (~gbaman@31.205.104.150) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:42] <seitensei> because robots
[0:42] <pksato> Ok, linked device is a sound effect "generator". Have a pins to play some "Effect".
[0:43] <Bilby> so you have audio you need to source from *both* the sound board *and* the pi?
[0:43] <thescatman> my problem is that after it working perfectly on a 1280*1024 screen, I plug it into my 1080p TV and all the games run in a tiny 640*480 box
[0:43] <pksato> Audio goes to speaker (phone or other PA)
[0:43] <Bilby> :(
[0:43] <seitensei> Yep- this audioboard is being manipulated/triggered by an arduino which is also attached to the Pi :x
[0:43] <pksato> And, have a UART to uC controll.
[0:44] <Bilby> thescatman i had a similar problem moving from my 1280x1024 to a 720p tv for a display board
[0:44] <Bilby> seitensei any reason you don't just run everything through the pi?
[0:44] <pksato> A RPi can be used to trigger one of 11 effect pins, or send command via UART.
[0:44] <Bilby> it can do what the sound board can do...
[0:45] <thescatman> Bilby, that's weird... every emulator is running at the games native res now
[0:45] <thescatman> :L
[0:45] * teepee (~teepee@94.100.18.130) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:46] <Bilby> sometimes i think resolution management on the pi is super broke
[0:46] <thescatman> Bilby, wtf, I can't exit an emu either now
[0:46] * Tenkawa (~arakeen@unaffiliated/tenkawa) has left #raspberrypi
[0:46] <thescatman> I think it could have been designed to allow changing of res without going crazy
[0:46] * abnormal (~abnormal@48.sub-70-209-131.myvzw.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:47] * gbaman (~gbaman@31.205.104.150) Quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
[0:47] <seitensei> Actually
[0:47] <seitensei> I wonder if I could use the PWM for output of audio
[0:47] <thescatman> oh well
[0:47] <Bilby> eesh
[0:48] * Bilby backs away slowly as thescatman's emulator commits electronics seppeku
[0:48] <thescatman> it seems like it.......
[0:48] <thescatman> I can't even exit it
[0:48] <thescatman> with any keyboard shortcut
[0:48] <thescatman> time to ssh shutdown :(
[0:48] <Bilby> seitensei seriously, you're going to hate yourself for trying it that way. if you abso-tively-lutely have to use the audio board for some reason, in addition to audio from the pi, build a couple of summing boxes and combine the signals in analog.
[0:48] <Bilby> http://www.rane.com/note109.html
[0:49] <pksato> seitensei: NO, you can not play over PWM using this "sound card". [end period]
[0:49] <Bilby> look for the section marked "Stereo-to-Mono summing box"
[0:49] <Bilby> build two of those to combine your two Left channel and two Right channels
[0:49] * Cust0sL1men (~CustosLim@unaffiliated/cust0slim3n) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[0:50] <Bilby> it's literally 3 resistors x 2, not too hard
[0:50] * lazl0w (~lazl0w@129.115.3.56) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[0:50] <teknic111> I'm having display issues when using raspbian on my pi2 in portrait mode. I posted this problem on reddit with a sceenshot of the issue. http://www.reddit.com/r/raspberry_pi/comments/2wzx55/unable_to_run_raspbian_on_my_pi_2_in_portrait/
[0:50] <seitensei> I see
[0:51] <Bilby> teknic111 that's some weird artifacting. if you were on a regular computer i'd say your video card had died. you don't get that at all when you're in landscape?
[0:51] <teknic111> can someone with raspbian on a pi2 confirm if they also have the same problem in portrait mode
[0:51] <teknic111> no, landscape works fine
[0:52] * vircung is now known as vircung|afk
[0:52] <Bilby> I have a Pi2 sitting here but it's already been re-sold so I don't want to unbox it
[0:52] <seitensei> I'd try, but I don't have Raspbian :x
[0:52] <Bilby> I can check on a Pi1-B but I'm assuming you've already checked since you have one lol
[0:52] <teknic111> yes, it works fine on my b+
[0:53] * Alina-malina (~Alina-mal@unaffiliated/alina-malina) Quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)

[0:53] * Alina-malina (~Alina-mal@unaffiliated/alina-malina) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:54] <Bilby> it's probably worth posting the Rpi forums and/or emailing the seller, it's possible you got a bad video processor. I'm trying to think what could cause that...
[0:55] <Bilby> is it artifacting on screen resolution ie ghost trail when moving your mouse?
[0:55] <Bilby> seitensei does what i suggested make sense to you?
[0:55] <teknic111> Bilby, yes it is
[0:55] <seitensei> Bilby: yep
[0:56] <Bilby> teknic111 are you overclocked at all? direct HDMI into the screen or using an adapter? can you replicate on a second screen or at a different resolution?
[0:56] <Bilby> seitensei good. That's going to be the easiest solution. Build a pair of those and stick a jack on the back-end and you're good to go :)
[0:56] <Bilby> brb preheating the oven
[0:57] * TheLostAdmin (~TheLostAd@206-248-153-228.dsl.teksavvy.com) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[0:57] <teknic111> Bilby, i am direct hdmi to a screen. The problem persist if i'm overclocked or not.

[1:00] * ukgamer is now known as ukgamer|away
[1:00] <Bilby> teknic111 hmm. well, worth asking haha. I would bet there's some sort of driver issue going on with the resolution and the refresh rate
[1:00] * thescatman (~thescatma@unaffiliated/thescatman) Quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)

[1:09] <blahdodo> yep says it cant read the boot image
[1:10] <OffensiveUser> has anyone tried any of the heavier retroarch shaders on the pi2?
[1:10] <blahdodo> just got a new sandisk class10 32g replacement sd and unzipped NOOBS still the same

[1:12] <blahdodo> ozzzy: I unzipped to windows partition on the sd isnt that what the instuctions say I was using osmc before but it hung last night and wouldnt boot
[1:13] <blahdodo> Downloads/NOOBS_v1_4_0.zip
[1:13] <ozzzy> well... I don't use noobs but raspbian just needs an image write
[1:13] <kisak> blahdodo: it specifically needs to be fat32
[1:14] <blahdodo> is raspbian the best starting point
[1:14] <blahdodo> just uncommpress and dd the image

[1:19] <chisight> hid3, i'm working on some code that will compile on a pi and another platform. to do so, i need gpio access something like https://gitorious.org/mini2440-qt-gpio-library/mini2440-qt-gpio-library.git
[1:19] <chisight> my desire is to allow the code to be tested without additional hardware, so gpio16 is perfect. i turn off the trigger with sudo bash -c "echo none >/sys/class/leds/led0/trigger" but when i then attempt to set up the export with sudo bash -c "echo 16 >/sys/class/gpio/export" i get bash: line 0: echo: write error: Device or resource busy.
[1:20] <chisight> does anyone know how to set up access to gpio16 via /sys/class/gpio/gpio16 like works for most other pins?
[1:21] <blahdodo> kisak: just put osmc image on new microsd /dev/sdd1 2048 499711 497664 243M c W95 FAT32 (LBA) so it looks like its fat32 but sill no joy mounts fine in linux

Currently I don't have a card reader, and the pi is not accessible via ssh yet. Is there any way for me to edit the config, or force some sort of "Safe video" mode without the config.txt?
[14:37] <clever> i think noobs has a key for that, but its only of use if you already have noobs installed

[14:42] <cyanide> i did that

[14:43] <clever> in theory, you could make a kernel+initrd which contains ssh, and doesnt mount a rootfs
[14:43] <clever> boot the pi from that card, then you can remove the card and still access it
[14:43] <clever> now you have an ethernet based sd card reader!
[14:44] <thescatman> So I've spent, like, an hour setting the overscan settings so they're correct now...
[14:44] <thescatman> but when I go into any emulator it goes into a box that's 80% of the screen size

[14:45] <clever> the emulator may use dispmanx, which bypasses the overscan config
[14:45] <clever> so you have to set the overscan within the emulator

[17:14] <McBride36> kisak, what's the advantages of gentoo?
[17:15] <kisak> mostly it's control, there's little to no boilerplate hiding stuff
[17:15] <ozzzy> LFS is for you
[17:15] <kisak> LFS isn't a distro
[17:15] <kisak> it's a book
[17:16] <Tenkawa> its all relative
[17:16] <ozzzy> the people that run it call it a distro
[17:16] <ozzzy> and that's good enough for me
[17:16] * Delboy (~openwrt@158-136.dsl.iskon.hr) has joined #raspberrypi
[17:17] <kisak> personally, Gentoo was the first distro I could not break so bad that it could not be fixed
[17:17] <ShorTie> withGentoo you have like more control over stuff because you build it from source instead of using pre-compiled packages
[17:18] <Tenkawa> you can do that to most distros if you want to put in the work
[17:19] <sauerkrause> I used to use pre-compiled packages with gentoo. a few of us in dorms had same cpu arch and a server, so we set up a binary mirror that we could cache the pre-compiled binaries.
[17:19] * nimoot (~HomoSapie@unaffiliated/toomin) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[17:19] <McBride36> so what's the difference between gentoo and arch
[17:19] <sauerkrause> Tenkawa: the key being gentoo makes it simpler than most
[17:19] <McBride36> from my basic understanding archy is a lot of barebones as well
[17:19] <ShorTie> true, but that is Gentoo's normal behavior
[17:19] <Tenkawa> meh.. simpler is relative
[17:20] * Datalink (~Datalink@unaffiliated/datalink) has joined #raspberrypi
[17:20] <ShorTie> everyone should do a Gentoo install, it is a learning experience, imho

[17:21] <sauerkrause> said no arch user ever ;)
[17:22] <sauerkrause> seems like most arch users are very interested in selling their views on it.
[17:22] <McBride36> kisak, i'm genuinely curious, thanks for answering as much as you did

[17:23] <muriani> I agree with Gentoo being a learning experience
[17:23] <muriani> and that there is value in that
[17:23] <sauerkrause> gentoo has a lot of much more dated packages. being a source-based distro, they don't just update the build tools willynilly like Arch.
[17:24] * gbaman (~gbaman@31.205.104.150) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[17:24] <sauerkrause> that said, unstable gentoo gets you bleeding edgeish packages.

[17:29] <McBride36> hue
[17:29] <sivteck> how long it takes to install gentoo in rpi2 without DE? or are there binaries?
[17:31] <clever> i typicaly do my x86 gentoo installs using a stage3 tar
[17:31] <clever> which is basicaly the same as a rasbian install
[17:31] <clever> just unpack the tar to /, add a kernel, and it boots
[17:31] * sivteck tries
[17:32] <clever> for a pi, you would need an armv6 or armv7 stage3 tar file
[17:32] <clever> depending on if its pi1 or pi2
[17:33] <ShorTie> 1st Gentoo install for me was like atleast 10 hours
[17:33] <MY123> clever, note that a armv6 tar file works on V7
[17:33] <clever> MY123: yep, but then you cant take full advantage of the hardware
[17:33] <MY123> ShorTie: On my PC, it took 3 hours
[17:34] <MY123> clever, even the V7 one does not take full advantage
[17:34] <ShorTie> well, i was on a steap learning curve too...
[17:34] <MY123> clever, because it does not use SDIV/UDIV
[17:34] <sauerkrause> it took about 30 minutes on my desktop last I tried.
[17:34] <sauerkrause> thanks to stage3
[17:34] <clever> most of the setup time after a stage3 is compiling&installing all the 'optional' parts
[17:34] <MY123> sauerkrause: Stage1, stage2 and stage3 in 3 hours total
[17:34] <sauerkrause> yeah, like cron and syslog and dhcp

[17:46] * pklaus (~pklaus@p4FD6F0AC.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) has joined #raspberrypi
[17:46] <sauerkrause> and people are running into issues with the only 1GB of ram because rather than write android apps for a kiosk, they insist on huge bloated web apps.

[17:46] <sauerkrause> it'd make too much sense to write android apps for something running android, no?

[17:47] <clever> they wrote a stripped down html5 UI, which was crippled and useless
[17:47] <clever> for 'mobile use'
[17:47] <clever> i reverse engineered their protocol, and wrote a proper android app
[17:47] <sauerkrause> cehteh: that's the one where I have a gzipped ramdisk for swap?

[17:48] <cehteh> zram doed that, would work somewhat too
[17:48] <sauerkrause> heh
[17:49] <cehteh> zswap sits in front of normal swap, compresses pages, and stores them in memory, only swapping out to disk when memory gets tight
[17:49] <sauerkrause> clever: yeah, we almost rewrote part of a client's web app in native code just to show them how much they suck at web apps.
[17:49] <sauerkrause> cehteh: ahh
[17:49] <clever> sauerkrause: my android app out-performed the html app on a high performance gaming rig
[17:50] <clever> because they had 6 bloody MB of javascript code powering it
[17:50] <clever> with leaks everywhere
[17:50] <cehteh> with programs taking almost 2GB of ram its fine one doesnt notice much slowdown (depending on the ram access patterns and compressibility)
[17:50] <sauerkrause> yeah, they do all their dev and testing on desktops running modern day i5s and i7s with chrome
[17:50] <cehteh> well.. as i saied before, next stop will be 2GB address space for the user
[17:50] <clever> sauerkrause: they also used a javascript lib that says 'GC sucks, lets fix it'
[17:50] <sauerkrause> and then bitch when our firefox-based kiosk browser on a omap4470 with only 1GB of ram doesn't perform the same.
[17:50] <clever> sauerkrause: every object you create goes into a single array
[17:50] <cehteh> when i compile the kernel next time i may try 3Guser/1Gkernel out
[17:51] <clever> that array has ~50,000 items under normal use
[17:51] <clever> if you drop a refernece, it cant GC
[17:51] <clever> so you basicaly have c style heap leaking under javascript
[17:51] <sauerkrause> clever: yeah, I'm not surprised if our client's doing something similar.
[17:51] <clever> sauerkrause: the reason the lib did that, is that they claimed browsers cant cycle collect right
[17:52] <clever> sauerkrause: so the lib will remove all cycle loops in the js, when the destructor is called
[17:52] <clever> to give the GC an easy time
[17:52] <clever> also, at page unload, it calls the destructor, for all 50,000 items
[17:52] <clever> firefox then locks up :P
[17:53] <clever> after 30 seconds, firefox offers to terminate the script
[17:53] <clever> idiots then hit 'dont ask me again', so it doesnt
[17:53] <clever> now it locks up for a solid 5 minutes each time!!
[17:53] <clever> so they begin killing the whole process, and wonder why things get corrupted

[23:20] <charlie_sanders> day: ouch, that sounds painful
[23:20] <charlie_sanders> day: was just reminising of the days of slackware, does anyone still use it ?
[23:20] <sauerkrause> slackware had days?

[23:21] <day> meh i tried it a while on my desktop its not to bad :/
[23:21] <sauerkrause> slackware seemed to be the hipster distro back when I started using in 2004.
[23:21] <charlie_sanders> hey austin buddy! it did for me, roughly from 96-98
[23:21] <sauerkrause> charlie_sanders: ahh, okay, so it was past its prime when I stumbled onto it.
[23:22] <sauerkrause> hi back!
[23:22] * kushal (~kdas@fedora/kushal) has joined #raspberrypi
[23:22] <kisak> rumor I heard is that the devs are addressing the packaging weaknesses of slackware, and slackware today is much healthier today than it was back then
[23:22] <day> what packaging weakness?
[23:23] <charlie_sanders> yeah, there is no packaging at all

[23:24] <sauerkrause> charlie_sanders: I thought they added a package manager that was easily installable or something.
[23:24] <kisak> when I played with it, admittedly not recently, it was a fire and forget deployment -- supposedly there is a sane update system in place
[23:25] <sauerkrause> it was Arch sans pacman before Arch iirc

[23:25] <sauerkrause> the only thing I ever really used that was slackware based though was vector linux
[23:26] <sauerkrause> as I happened upon a 10 year old laptop in college and vector was about all it could handle.
[23:26] <sauerkrause> it used slapt-get for a package manager.
[23:26] <day> besides theres still slackpkg update

[23:55] <kisak> l0ngest: it should be safe to generalize the question, and treat the raspberry pi like any other linux box

[23:58] <teknic111> i need someone with raspbian on a pi2 to test portrait mode for me. I am getting extreme artifacting when running in this mode. I'd like to know if this is just my pi or an undocumented bug. I posted a screen shot of the artifacts here...http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=101674
