[0:34] <Klaus_Dieter> ok so let me rephrase... can I netboot using a TL WN722N?
[0:35] <shiftplusone> you can have an NFS rootfs, for example, but the kernel must be on the sd card.
[0:36] <Klaus_Dieter> shiftplusone: that is fine - it is just that the guides I an find to allow for that always use eth0 instead of a wifi card
[0:37] <shiftplusone> you may need to compile a kernel with the necessary driver compiled-in.
[0:38] <shiftplusone> or use an initramfs
[0:38] <Klaus_Dieter> that does not sound like an awful lot of work...

[0:50] <Sonny_Jim> Famous last words
[0:50] <Sonny_Jim> Considering you need to have an SD card to boot, netbooting seems kinda pointless to me
[0:51] <Sonny_Jim> May as well just have a NFS rootfs

[1:06] <Bilby> gave up on finding something to make a diagram, did it in mspaint. Professionalism FAIL

[1:32] <willmore> Bilby, looks good.
[1:33] <willmore> Sonny_Jim, if there were a way to put the netboot code into an SPI EEPROM chip or something then that might be handy.

[1:40] * lpax (~lpax@unaffiliated/lpax) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[1:40] <willmore> Sonny_Jim, I'm saying if the pi could boot *from* the SPI memory instead of an SD card.
[1:41] <willmore> shiftplusone might know something on that topic. Not a lot of good public docs on the Broadcom chips.
[1:42] * fengling (~fengling@59.109.104.165) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[1:43] <shiftplusone> it can boot from SPI but not in that way... it's more like the USB boot compute module thing.
[1:43] <atouk> i think that without the boot code from the usd, the pi is braindead on how to use the spi. so there is no way for it to load from the spi
[1:43] <ali1234> shiftplusone: it can boot in spi slave mode?
[1:43] <shiftplusone> I don't know the specifics
[1:44] * oxhak (~OxHaK@unaffiliated/oxhak) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:44] <shiftplusone> but one of the engineers did mention spi boot capability
[1:44] <ali1234> you could always boot it on jtag :)
[1:44] <ali1234> do you know what is the maximum size of the kernel+fs for booting over usb?
[1:45] <ali1234> i found that it crashes if the total image is more than about 12MB
[1:45] <shiftplusone> that seems a bit on the low side
[1:45] <ali1234> yeah i know right
[1:45] <ali1234> but there you go...
[1:45] <shiftplusone> I avoid looking into the docs and source code and just stick to publicly available information so... I don't know.
[1:45] <ali1234> it does have to decompress the FS, so that's going to be like 8MB compressed + 20MB uncompressed
[1:46] <ali1234> i guess i should just disassemble usbbootcode.bin and write my own
[1:47] * gbaman (~gbaman@31.205.109.64) has joined #raspberrypi

[2:18] <Cheekio> Hi everybody- I'm still having an issue where video will run for about 20 minutes, then crash. Now I can recreate the issue on kodi and raspbian
[2:18] * riq__ (~riq_@50.247.101.107) Quit (Client Quit)
[2:18] <Cheekio> Definitely not an undervoltage problem, and kodi never gave the overheating red square so... I think that rules out overheating
[2:19] <Cheekio> Seen on 2 brand new rpis, tried 2 different micro sd cards, 2 different wifi adapters (because of course I'm streaming the video)
[2:19] <Cheekio> rpi2s*
[2:19] <Cheekio> This in an rpi2 problem
[2:20] <edman007> Cheekio, define crash? the application crashes? the pi? does local/remote connections still work? lights?
[2:20] <Cheekio> on rasbian, omxplayer goes to black and then quits
[2:22] * rvalles (~rvalles@unaffiliated/rvalles) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[2:22] <Cheekio> on kodi, it just halts the video, then drops back to the file menu
[2:22] <Cheekio> Is there a vpu benchmark or testing program I can run on raspbian?
[2:22] <Cheekio> Are there logs? It's linux, there have to be logs.
[2:22] * zz_monocle is now known as monocle
[2:23] <Cheekio> local/remote connections still work in both cases. I just need to restart the video player and try to track my way to wherever it crashed

[2:24] <waveform> Cheekio, it might be interesting to see what's in the videocore log for your case - let me just dig out the command...
[2:24] <waveform> Cheekio, next time you get a crash like that on Raspbian try "sudo vcdbg log msg" - that'll dump the GPU's log to the console
[2:25] * smeggysmeg (~smeg@unaffiliated/smeggysmeg) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:25] <waveform> there's usually a ton of stuff in there which isn't terribly interesting - it's the last few lines that might be useful

[2:25] * rvalles (~rvalles@unaffiliated/rvalles) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:25] <waveform> (don't know if vcdbg is installed on kodi so best to try on Raspbian first)
[2:26] <edman007> Cheekio, honestly, that sounds like the GPU driver being buggy, have you tried changing the omx version, kernel version, etc?
[2:26] <edman007> Cheekio, I'd start with the output of dmesg
[2:26] <edman007> and check /var/log/messages and syslog and Xorg.0.log
[2:27] <Cheekio> checking
[2:27] <Cheekio> Would raspbian dim the screen after 20 minutes?
[2:28] <Cheekio> Would that break omxplayer?
[2:28] * utack (~utack@mnch-5d87588e.pool.mediaWays.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[2:29] <waveform> good question - there is a default screensaver in Raspbian (both in X and at the console IIRC; though I'm pretty sure I disabled the console one on mine ages ago)
[2:29] <ali1234> kodi is xmbc right?
[2:29] <waveform> I'd be surprised if it affected omxplayer though
[2:29] <waveform> ali1234, yeah - the new "nothing to do with X-Box" name for it
[2:29] <ali1234> *xbmc
[2:29] <ali1234> wasn't there another similar application on linux that is like a HTPC type of thing?
[2:31] <waveform> I've played with a few over the years (VDR, mythtv, etc.)

[2:39] <Cheekio> I went through the logs
[2:39] <kisak> ali1234: yes, Kodi used to be called xbmc
[2:39] <Cheekio> I pulled out some gpioman_get_pin_num info log which seemed unrelated, as well as a hdmi_get_pin_state deprecation warning
[2:40] * RaptorJesus (~RaptorJes@unaffiliated/raptorjesus) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[2:40] <kisak> waveform: xbmc to kodi rename was due to a legal conflict, there's a talk about the change
[2:41] <Cheekio> @edman007- here's the vcdbg log output minus those things I mentioned, not sure if this is far enough back: http://pastebin.com/dj7Y7aJw
[2:41] <waveform> Cheekio, yeah, there's usually a ton of gpioman_get_pin_num spam in there
[2:42] <Cheekio> I'm running update && upgrade, don't know if I've done that yet with this install
[2:42] <Cheekio> <3 linux
[2:42] <Cheekio> Even when it's broken, it's better than windows
[2:42] <Cheekio> 10.2MB of updates, looks like everything is pretty recent
[2:43] <ozzzy> Cheekio, what's wrong with windows
[2:43] <Cheekio> If I apt-get update && upgrade, does that automatically bump to the latest kernel?
[2:43] <ozzzy> specifically
[2:43] * thomasreggi (~thomasreg@ool-44c25559.dyn.optonline.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:43] <waveform> Cheekio, unfortunately I don't think there's anything interesting in that log (although the alloc_compact_internal failed bit is potentially interesting - I don't see that on my pi2)
[2:44] <kisak> waveform: there it is http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/fosdem-video/2015/devroom-open_media/kodi.mp4
[2:44] <waveform> Cheekio, yes, apt-get update/upgrade does upgrade the kernel but not to the bleeding edge (sudo rpi-update is used for that, but it's not recommended unless you know there's a specific fix there you know you need)
[2:44] * zz_monocle is now known as monocle
[2:44] <waveform> kisak, ta - I'll take a look when I get a sec :)

[2:45] <kisak> bloody audio is low on all those fosdem videos :<
[2:46] <Cheekio> Yeah, I've been burned by bleeding releases before
[2:46] <jrcharney> Anyone know where I can find a default copy of the /etc/network/interfaces file?
[2:46] <Cheekio> Well, I rebooted and killed the screen saver, that was set to 30 minutes
[2:46] <Cheekio> I mean, the issues showed up at ~20 minutes, so that doesn't sound like it
[2:46] * thomasre_ (~thomasreg@ool-44c25559.dyn.optonline.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
[2:48] <kisak> the short version is that xbmc has imposters using their name, and when they applied for a trademark, it was denied, and they were given a year to change the name and ship a new version using that name
[2:48] <Cheekio> Any idea what I'd look for in dmesg or kern.log?
[2:48] <waveform> Cheekio, I must admit it rather sounds like a GPU thing. Hopefully it's something to do with the openmax layer though; if it's in the GPU itself that'll probably mean only the firmware devs can fix it (and their time is pretty limited)
[2:49] <waveform> Cheekio, I assume you've tried it with several different video files and it crashes at the same(ish) point in each?

[2:51] <waveform> yeah, so it's length of playback time rather than anything specific in a file

[2:51] <Cheekio> Yes, definitely
[2:51] <waveform> in other words, it sounds awfully like some sort of memory leak or resource exhaustion...

[9:43] <engblom> Is anyone having a good idea for how to make raspberry pi power-cycle itself. Basically my idea is that as long as one gpio pin is pulsing 0..1..0 with a certain delay between each pulse. If this pulse is not coming, it should do a power cycle as it probably been hanging.
[9:43] <engblom> I would need some idea for how to construct the power cycling electronics.

[9:48] <shiftplusone> engblom: may I ask why you don't just use the watchdog?
[9:48] <ivh> When grabbing the motion-data from the h264-encoding with picamera, is it expected that the length of these vectors is _exactly_ 0.0 when there is no motion?
[9:49] <shiftplusone> and why power cycle rather than just reset
[9:49] * moonbox (~moonbox@95.215.60.141) has joined #raspberrypi

[9:51] <shiftplusone> http://raspi.tv/2012/making-a-reset-switch-for-your-rev-2-raspberry-pi
[9:52] <engblom> Interesting
[9:52] <shiftplusone> hook up gpio there and you should be able to do the thing
[9:52] <shiftplusone> but... the watchdog is the right answer here.

[9:53] <engblom> Yes, watchdog is the right answer but I would want to make a watchdog myself... Even if it is as simply as keeping a capacitor charged by pulsing on gpio.
[9:53] <shiftplusone> you don't need to make anything
[9:53] <shiftplusone> it's already there
[9:53] <shiftplusone> enable and configure, that's all.
[9:54] <engblom> Do you mean rpi has built in watchdog?
[9:54] <shiftplusone> yes

[12:12] <elec64> ShorTie: tried several, I have an A, a B+, and a 2
[12:12] <elec64> A isn't working, B+ is the only one that ever showed anything
[12:13] <ShorTie> ok, so it's not a rpi2 then
[12:13] <elec64> ShorTie: no but there are problems with the new kernel they introduced
[12:13] <elec64> 3.18 and such
[12:13] <elec64> the one time I (just) got it to work was with 3.12
[12:13] <ShorTie> then you can goto http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/images/
[12:14] <elec64> Sure, last image pre-Pi2?
[12:14] <ShorTie> and grab any image before 1/31/2015 then and use it
[12:14] <elec64> k, thanks
[12:14] <ShorTie> just do not update it
[12:15] <Hix> my LM2596 modules arrived this morning. the trim pot seems to be a value of 0.01V per turn, but the specsheet of the 3296 trimpot states it is a 25 turn pot. How on earth do you adjust the output past 0.25V?

[12:19] <Hix> no, it was a quick test in the lab at work. Shouldn't really be there so had to be swift and stealthy :)

[12:21] <Hix> for the LM2596's Tenkawa ?
[12:21] <elec64> shudown, the alternative command to shutdown, where your kernel faces off against the power button in a futile attempt at life

[12:22] <Tenkawa> littlebit: sorry I don't
[12:22] <Tenkawa> someone else hopefully will
[12:22] <Hix> hmm, yeah, that's the problem I have at the moment. The nestbox pi keeps shuitting down when Vin flutuates, hence ordering the LM2596's

[13:37] <leio> yes, and that element is specifically meant to integrate with it, so you can run gstreamer with JACK
[13:37] <leio> if you don't knowingly use JACK, you shouldn't end up using gstreamer jack plugins...

[13:42] <strobelight> ;-)

[16:00] <TheLostAdmin> mntmn, I vaguely remember something that can be added to /boot/config.txt for that but I don't remember what or where I saw it. Sorry.
[16:01] <TheLostAdmin> On a related note, can I do audio input with the 3.5mm jack?
[16:01] <mntmn> TheLostAdmin: the only related thing i saw was hdmi_drive=1, which disables hdmi audio
[16:01] <mntmn> TheLostAdmin: but it doesn't switch output over to the jack :/
[16:01] <aaa801> mhm, this is the strangest issue, i have a java irc client running on my pi, it craps out after 25Mb~ is transfered to it by xdcc, issue not present on windows
[16:01] <TheLostAdmin> mntmn, that might have been what I saw. Bummer.
[16:02] <pksato> if I recall, have a parameter to config.txt to send audio to jack and video to hdmi.

[16:07] <willmore> shiftplusone, looking at the usb boot for the compute module. Looks like you have to have access to the USB port right off the CPU, so it might be possible to do this on an 'a' model rpi, but not the B's as you can't get at that port--since the hub/ethernet chip is in the way.

[21:09] <teclo-> hi there, any of you got a Edimax EW-7612UAN to work successfully on a Raspberry Pi
[21:11] <Froolag> I haven't tried that one, I use an edimax without the antenna, works fine.
[21:12] <Xark> teclo-: Hmm, no, but I use a Edimax EW-7811U with zero hassles (automatically supported). Like https://encrypted.google.com/shopping/product/5334924684771426699
[21:12] <Froolag> Though I will say that it did seem to improve the reception when I used a rubber band to hold a high gain antenna from a dead wireless camera so the output of the antenna touched the case of the dongle.
[21:13] <Froolag> Not that I can say that the added antenna did a great deal to help reception.... maybe a little.

[23:07] <xSon1q> hi, can someone help me with creating user?
[23:08] <sydney_untangle> xSon1q: sudo adduser newuser
[23:08] <sydney_untangle> Or as root.
[23:09] <xSon1q> i followed the arch wiki and did useradd -m -G wheel -s /bin/bash archie
[23:09] <xSon1q> the user is created, but for some reason, i can't log in
[23:09] <Tachyon`> did you set a password?
[23:09] <xSon1q> yes
[23:09] <Ryccardo> easy, it has no password set yet
[23:10] <Ryccardo> hmmmm
[23:10] <Tachyon`> lol
[23:10] <Tachyon`> I dunno, I tend to use adduser
[23:10] <Tachyon`> does useradd create the home directory?
[23:10] <Ryccardo> with -m, yup
[23:10] <xSon1q> with -m it does
[23:10] <Tachyon`> curiou
[23:10] <Tachyon`> you can su - archie as root okay?
[23:11] <Ryccardo> Arch dropped useradd for some weird excuse
[23:11] <Ryccardo> the group "wheel" isn't really used in debian to mark superuser ("sudo" instead) but this should be a separate problem

[23:12] <xSon1q> what do you mean*
[23:12] <Tachyon`> as root, it should switch to the user without a password, if it does I'd suspect the password is missing/wrong, if it doesn't it'll probably give an error with a clue
[23:12] <Ryccardo> ^^^^
[23:13] <xSon1q> so log in as root, and do 'su - archie'?
[23:13] <Tachyon`> yes
[23:13] <xSon1q> su: failed to execute /etc/bash: No such file or directory
