[1:00] <waveform> coffeeholic, it'll probably depend on what the USB webcam outputs. Some of the higher end models output a compressed H.264 stream (in which case you can probably get away with streaming it)
[1:01] <waveform> cheaper ones output the raw video and there's no way the Pi's CPU is going to be fast enough to compress that or stream it without compression (unless you get the GPU to do the compression)
[1:04] <coffeeholic> waveform, it's an old Logitech camera. I guess it produces MJPEG.
[1:04] <coffeeholic> …but let me check on that.
[1:05] <waveform> coffeeholic, well, that's probably compressed enough to stream (it's mostly the Pi's USB IO that's the bottleneck on streaming - hence why it's vaguely important that the camera itself does some compression)
[1:05] <coffeeholic> Oh, wow, it's actually raw video.
[1:05] <coffeeholic> Not MJPEG.
[1:05] <waveform> that's pretty common on cheaper webcams
[1:05] * Wec (~Perkele@a450-83-150-119-246.nebulazone.fi) Quit (Quit: DSMOS has arrived)
[1:06] * Bastler (~Bastler@rc4n0h7f9r.adsl.datanet.hu) has left #raspberrypi
[1:07] <waveform> and I'm afraid you can pretty much forget streaming that from your Pi. Firstly the USB IO isn't going to be sufficient and even if it were you won't get the CPU to compress that in realtime (the GPU could compress that in realtime, but you'd still need the CPU to hand it frames fast enough)
[1:10] * tombrough (~tom@cpc3-newt3-0-0-cust8.19-3.cable.virginm.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[1:10] <cehteh> coffeeholic: try out motion
[1:11] <cehteh> if you reduce the resolution it *may* work .. but dont have high hopes
[1:12] <waveform> there's a fork of motion that uses mmal for video compression but I'm fairly sure that only works with the Pi's camera module (although mmal is generic enough to accept frames from anything)
[1:13] <cehteh> i think the pi can handle it at very modest settings, low res, low quality, low framerate with some antique codec
[1:15] <waveform> I could believe that - 640x480x30fps with an RGB encoding equates to a bandwidth of about 26MB/s - I could see the Pi keeping up with transferring that (though not doing much with it) - lower resolutions would likely succeed
[1:16] <cehteh> MB or mbit? :)
[1:17] * shivers (~shivers@c80-216-54-8.bredband.comhem.se) Quit (Quit: My Computer has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[1:17] <waveform> MB
[1:18] * shivers (~shivers@c80-216-54-8.bredband.comhem.se) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:19] <waveform> raw video is seriously heavy stuff in terms of bandwidth. If you look at what the Pi's camera module throws over the CSI-2 interface to the GPU it's pretty impressive :)

[1:31] <Xark> thomas_r: Random LED TV/monitor with backlight turned down as much as possible?
[1:32] * Gathis (~TheGrey@unaffiliated/gathis) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[1:33] <Xark> thomas_r: Hmm, or http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/15-inch-hdmi-monitor-led-tv_1900805376.html
[1:34] * Lartza (lartza@unaffiliated/lartza) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[1:34] <thomas_r> i don't know. i'm looking to buy something to reduce electricity as most of the tasks i do could be done on a pi2. so if i could find a decent sized monitor, i'd spend some money to save more in the long run
[1:34] * dreamon (~dreamon@unaffiliated/dreamon) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[1:35] * ms06s (~michael@cpe-24-161-90-96.hvc.res.rr.com) has left #raspberrypi
[1:35] <thomas_r> Xark, what experience have you had buying from alibaba? it's probably from the same factory that produces for apple / samsung etc, but i dont' know... it feels dirty!
[1:36] * waveform (~dave@waveform.plus.com) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[1:36] <Xark> thomas_r: It is a pain. I think you need a middleman (and I've not done it).
[1:36] <Xark> thomas_r: I think most new smaller LED + LCD monitors are pretty low power.
[1:36] <Xark> thomas_r: The backlight is most of the power, so if you dim that you are good

[1:40] <thomas_r> thanks, i'll look into in. would a cheap tv suffice?
[1:44] <Criggie> thomas_r: consider a LED 24" monitor with HDMI.
[1:44] <Criggie> should work find on pi
[1:44] <Criggie> and you might even have a case that mounts on the back of the monitor
[1:44] <thomas_r> i find big monitors too hot, and pointless
[1:44] * morois (~morois@28.119.165.83.dynamic.mundo-r.com) has left #raspberrypi
[1:44] <thomas_r> having to move my head as well as my eyes is tiring!
[1:45] <Xark> thomas_r: I got (nearly) the cheapest 1080p TV from Amazon and it is pretty low power (the ESA graph shows it at the very bottom of the scale at $4 a year)
[1:46] <Xark> thomas_r: I don't think LED ones get very hot (at least small ones)
[1:46] <Xark> thomas_r: The older backlights did heat up
[1:46] <thomas_r> ah ok. i have an ips and that buzzes and gets hot
[1:46] <thomas_r> reminiscent of the old crt's

[1:47] * jaggzt (~Jag@unaffiliated/jaggz) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[1:48] <Xark> Yes, my older 20" is 85watts and gets noticeably warm on top however my newer (and much larger) 27" has barely any heat (listed as typically 42 watts).

[1:49] <thomas_r> In our Sleep/Standby test, the PA246Q drew 1.04 watts and the LP2480zx pulled a higher 1.97 watts. We expected the monitors to cost nearly the same per year to run, and based on our formula, the PA246Q would cost $22.08 per year, whereas the LP2480zx would cost $20.05 per year.
[1:50] <thomas_r> does that mean that if they were on standby all year, they'd cost $20-22?
[1:50] * dreamon (~dreamon@unaffiliated/dreamon) Quit (Max SendQ exceeded)
[1:50] <thomas_r> this monitor i have here is some insane amount like 80W and although it looks beautiful, I can't justify it
[1:53] <Xark> thomas_r: Ok, the cheap Samsung 22" I got for my RPi is listed as 18W typical (max 35W).
[1:54] <thomas_r> nice
[1:54] <thomas_r> i think i'll have to sell this monitor
[1:54] <thomas_r> it'd make an awesome gaming monitor, but that's about all
[1:55] <thomas_r> i think i got shafted when i bought it at 400 :(

[3:04] <superteece> Hi. I have a Pi2 that will not put out a HDMI signal. I've tried writing the most current Raspbein img to the SD card. The card in question came with NOOBS pre-installed. Pressing 1 or 2 at boot doesn't help. I'm open to suggestions.

[3:08] <superteece> k
[3:09] <superteece> Well that stinks
[3:09] <Xark> superteece: You could try tweaking some settings on SD card config.txt to force HDMI and up HDMI drive strength.
[3:09] <BenGrimm> and you used image installer to put the image on sd?
[3:09] <BenGrimm> or just drag/drop

[4:06] <HtheB> guys, how can I find out where the "VCC" is?
[4:07] <cehteh> doc, pics and schematics are online
[4:08] <HtheB> cehteh, I do have some schematics
[4:08] <HtheB> but, I still cant figure it out :/
[4:08] <HtheB> I'm trying to add a potentiometer to the PiTFT
[4:08] <cehteh> for what?
[4:08] <HtheB> brightness
[4:09] <cehteh> isnt brightness controlled by pwm?
[4:09] <HtheB> I want to use hardware brightness controll with a potentiometer
[4:09] <HtheB> It suits better in the Gameboy project that I want to do
[4:10] <HtheB> hang on, let me show you what I have
[4:10] <cehteh> i tihnk using a poti sux for that
[4:10] <cehteh> how much mA does the backlight draw?
[4:10] <HtheB> www.htheb.com/schematic.png
[4:11] <cehteh> might be already the limit of most small potis, and kill battery as well
[4:11] <HtheB> why kill battery when lowering it?
[4:11] <HtheB> im not adding more light :P
[4:11] * gbaman (~gbaman@host81-148-184-31.in-addr.btopenworld.com) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[4:12] <cehteh> not that, but still a resistor will only turn excess voltage into heat
[4:12] <HtheB> hmm
[4:12] <HtheB> if it sucks, I can always remove the mod though
[4:13] <cehteh> also i dont know that TFT, but i suspect its backlit with white leds which change in color/spectrum when you dim them resistive
[4:13] <HtheB> it's worth a shot though
[4:13] <cehteh> just get some small fet an put it at some pwm output, if you dont want to taint your rpi design then use some standalone pwm controller
[4:13] <HtheB> in the picture, the "orange colored" is the one I need to know where to solder it
[4:14] <HtheB> hmm

[4:32] <HtheB> so it should be the bottom right
[4:33] <HtheB> cehteh: something wrong? :O
[4:33] <cehteh> i wont wonder if the backlight alone draws more .. and its connected to 5V .. you may fry your PiTFT (well i am only guessing, but better research if that really works)
[4:33] <cehteh> yes pin5 has 3.3V
[4:33] <cehteh> but read the datasheet
[4:34] <cehteh> has anyone done what you trying to do before?
[4:34] <cehteh> if not better dont try, or make sure that it will work
[4:35] <cehteh> if you tap the voltage there, you should tap it behind the output capacitor too
[4:36] <HtheB> hmm
[4:36] <cehteh> and 150mA is its maximum rating, that doesnt mean you can draw 150mA from it when its fed with 5V, besides its there to drive other stuff
[4:37] <HtheB> so that schematic of mine is not ok?
[4:37] <HtheB> (the blue part is added later on

[4:38] <HtheB> hey, someone has to do it :D

[5:07] <Artheist> Hi everyone
[5:08] <HtheB> it doesnt matter if I switched 1 and 3 right?
[5:08] <HtheB> or does it?
[5:08] <Artheist> a quick question here, cause I get a satisfying answer online and it is a bit mind boggling
[5:09] <HtheB> cehteh: ^^
[5:09] <Artheist> I would like to know how to have a decent (by decent I mean best possible) audio input with the RPi
[5:10] <Artheist> There is the obvious solution where you have a usb dongle with audio input
[5:10] <Artheist> But afaik it only does VoIP quality (aka 16 kHz)
[5:11] <pksato> Artheist: professional audio gear, like one from maudio.
[5:11] <Artheist> Then, from what I understand it is possible to hook up with I2S directly with RPi2 or with a modified RT kernel on Rpi v2
[5:12] <Artheist> pksato: ok but this is kind of pricey, isn't it ?
[5:12] * Noldorin (~noldorin@unaffiliated/noldorin) Quit (Quit: –)
[5:13] <pksato> You ask for best possible. :)
[5:13] <Artheist> From my knowledge, you can get a decent sound from a 10$ electret with a zoom H4 (or equivalent)
[5:13] <pksato> $80 for 2 ch. 48khz.

[5:15] * gbaman (~gbaman@host81-148-184-31.in-addr.btopenworld.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[5:15] <Artheist> pksato : I know about this one so let me rephrase my question
[5:16] <Artheist> This kind of kind is good, no doubt about it
[5:16] <Artheist> But, what I need is a single audio input for a mic
[5:17] <Artheist> And, if I remember well the audio input is not that great (VoIP) like
[5:17] <pksato> you ask for "the best".
[5:18] <Artheist> What I am asking is then: how do I get the best sampling rate from a decent electret mic with the pi ?
[5:18] <pksato> some <$5 usb sound card use chip designed to VoIP handset.
[5:19] <Artheist> So, it means I wont be able to get better SR from GPIO, be them I2S, I2c or else ?
[5:20] <pksato> http://www.ebay.com/itm/Syba-SD-AUD20101-USB2-0-Stereo-Sound-Adapter-VT1620A-Controller-Card-989C-/400734680333?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d4da5f50d
[5:21] <Artheist> pksato: ok, thanks I will go for that then 1
[5:21] <pksato> can use I2C to audio codec, but, I know only one product that does.
[5:22] <Artheist> ok ... which one. I am open to try various solution and make up my decision upon trying it myself

[10:43] <ShorTie> s/mivro/micro/
[10:43] <Xark> It is built into the power supply...doesn't seem super thin (but don't see a #)
[10:45] <ShorTie> then i'd guess you got a power supply/cable problem

[10:52] <Xark> Nope...
[10:52] <ShorTie> the foundation does call for a 2.5 amp supply http://www.raspberrypi.org/help/faqs/#powerReqs

[10:59] <ShorTie> in a case ??
[10:59] <Xark> ShorTie: I should just try a newer HDD (I have several - just didn't need 1TB on RPi2). :)
[11:00] <poolson> i got a bk 1660 the other day for 30 bucks as well
[11:00] <poolson> got too many power supplies!
[11:01] <Xark> ShorTie: Ok, found some info. Apparently it takes 600mA to "power up" (which is probably why RPi lights LED, but it makes no spinning noise [and shuts off again]).
[11:02] <Xark> Working great on the hub (which I want anyways), so I think I'll just live with it...

[17:51] <Sonny_Jim> Generally, any IDS system has to set between where the data comes in and where it gets distributed to the LAN
[17:51] <Sonny_Jim> so Router <-> IDS <-> LAN
[17:51] <Sonny_Jim> But seeing as the Pi comes with one network port, I guess they fudge that a little
[17:52] <NemeSys> Sonny_Jim, that was my thoughts as well
[17:52] <NemeSys> which is why I'm unsure where to plug that in...
[17:52] <waveform> NemeSys, just skimming the article but it looks like the Pi sits "near" the edge. The DSL router is still at the very edge of the network, the Pi is just inside that using the modem/router as its default route, but acting as a DHCP/DNS server which advertises itself as the default route for DHCP hosts
[17:53] <NemeSys> waveform, okay. That's kind of what I thought might be happening.
[17:53] <Sonny_Jim> Yeah everything gets plugged into the router and it takes over serving DNS and acts as the gateway to the LAN
[17:53] <NemeSys> So you plug the pi into a router port, point the router to talk to the pi for DHCP/DNS etc.
[17:53] <Sonny_Jim> Or what waveform said ;-)
[17:53] <Sonny_Jim> The only thing that talks directly to the router in that setup is the Pi
[17:54] <waveform> yup, that's the gist of it
[17:54] * jmw (~jmw@pool-96-224-91-91.nycmny.fios.verizon.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[17:54] <Sonny_Jim> Everything else will talk to the Pi, but the problem is that it's easy to get around, you just set the gateway on a LAN client
[17:54] * IT_Sean (~sean@applefritter/IRCStaff) has joined #raspberrypi
[17:54] <NemeSys> mmhm. Make the incoming DSL router talk to the pi with the router as an in-between that is unauthorized to converse directly
[17:54] <NemeSys> Sonny_Jim, it's for an in-home setup
[17:54] * ChanServ sets mode +o IT_Sean
[17:55] <Sonny_Jim> Yeah it'll work, I did something similar for "upside-down ternet" for unauthorised hosts
[17:55] <NemeSys> I'm really the only one in the house who would know how to work around it ;) so it's more for my own practice to setup & then learning to understand events.
[17:55] <NemeSys> essentially, practice in network administration ;) with an IDS involved.
[17:55] <waveform> yeah - should be good enough for home networks
[17:56] <waveform> (and certainly good enough for a bit of practice)
[17:56] <NemeSys> :) and I like Arch, so it all fits nicely into a fun project for me.
[17:56] <NemeSys> in fact, I run Arch on my Chromebook.
[17:56] * jazzzu (~jazzzu@D97B7B1C.cm-3-4b.dynamic.ziggo.nl) has joined #raspberrypi
[17:56] <waveform> nice - I really ought to spend some time with arch (if only to learn its packaging system for picamera) - sadly I don't have enough spare at the mo!
[17:57] <NemeSys> Arch is very easy with package management.
[17:57] <NemeSys> easier than Ubuntu / Debian, for sure.
[17:57] <NemeSys> search is: pacman -S foobar
[17:57] <NemeSys> search update is pacman -Syu foobar
[17:57] <NemeSys> done

[17:58] <Sonny_Jim> Oh well, they'll find out when their bittorrent can't get anywhere near their linespeed
[17:59] <IT_Sean> hah hah
[17:59] <waveform> hehe - I thought about mentioning that, but I figure unless they're torrenting it shouldn't be *too* bad (and it largely depends on whether they've got a half-decent DSL line unlike my folks who're still stuck on 8Mb/s in the boondocks!)
[17:59] <Sonny_Jim> Really even a cheap laptop minus a screen with a USB NIC would work better

[18:31] <McBride36> but they're mecanical switches, just power/ground

[18:32] <Sonny_Jim> There's plenty of tutorials available

[18:35] * Brunetty (~Home@unaffiliated/brunetty) has joined #raspberrypi

[18:37] <SpeedEvil> The chip may stop working without one.

[21:49] <giddles> ehm could someone explain me the user management of raspbipian?
[21:49] <Sonny_Jim> Should be the same as ubuntu
[21:49] <giddles> i want to rename pi to xyz and got some trouble
[21:50] <Sonny_Jim> Just add a new user called xyz
[21:50] <Sonny_Jim> And delete the pi user
[21:50] <giddles> and then i need the /home/ etc..
[21:50] <giddles> raspiconf also all for pi

[21:52] <giddles> hmhmhm alle complex...
[21:52] <giddles> what is a group?
[21:53] <Sonny_Jim> A group of users
[21:53] <Sonny_Jim> Or rather, a way of adding users to a group
[21:53] <giddles> hmmm
[21:53] <giddles> sudo no root
[21:53] * mrueg (~mrueg@gentoo/developer/mrueg) has joined #raspberrypi
[21:53] <giddles> thats not easy ;
[21:53] <giddles> :)
[21:53] <Sonny_Jim> so if a member is part of the "wheel" group they have access to the sudo command
[21:53] * Bilby (~Bilby@rrcs-70-61-255-114.central.biz.rr.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[21:53] <Bilby> o/
[21:53] <Sonny_Jim> You can use groups to allow/restrict access to certain things
[21:53] <giddles> so user pi group pi
[21:54] <giddles> als example?
[21:54] <Sonny_Jim> It's normally "user" as the group iirc
[21:54] * Sonny_Jim looks
[21:54] <Sonny_Jim> Oh wait, it looks like there is a "pi" group (for some reason"
[21:55] <Sonny_Jim> Ah ok. If you look in /etc/group you can see that various pi specific things can be accessed by a user in the "pi" group
[21:55] <Sonny_Jim> Like SPI, GPIO etc
[21:56] <giddles> oh damn
[21:56] <giddles> hehe
[21:56] <Sonny_Jim> Actually, no. I'm reading that all wrong.
[21:57] <giddles> hmm thanks for your time and service, i guess i first bite an citrone and then come back, im quite loosing my temper on pi /home/pi/ etc..
[21:58] <Sonny_Jim> Like I said, 'renaming' a user doesn't really exist
[21:58] * uTiNi is now known as uTiNioFF
[21:58] <Sonny_Jim> You can add a new user, copy over the home directory and delete the old user though
[21:58] <Jusii> but it doesn't really take much to rename it manually
[21:59] <zleap> yes user pi group pi
[21:59] <Jusii> edit /etc/passwd /etc/shadow /etc/group and move homedir
[21:59] <zleap> so user pi belongs to the grpup pi and other groups too, depending on what that user can do
[21:59] <giddles> i dont reall get that
[21:59] <giddles> @ group
[21:59] <giddles> really
[21:59] <Jusii> some thought and few minutes you'll figure it out
[21:59] <Jusii> replace pi with xyz
[21:59] <Sonny_Jim> Say you have a school?
[22:00] <Sonny_Jim> You can have two groups, teachers and students
[22:00] <Bilby> Ees,h, finally
[22:00] <Sonny_Jim> Actually that's a bad example, as a user can be a member of more than one group
[22:00] <Sonny_Jim> Really, it's as simple as it sounds.
[22:00] <zleap> does this help
[22:00] <zleap> https://www.linode.com/docs/tools-reference/linux-users-and-groups/
[22:01] <giddles> ah ok
[22:01] <giddles> thanx
[22:01] <giddles> :)
[22:01] <zleap> yeah say you had a group called music and you stored music in /home/music anyone part of that group would and with the right permissions would be able to read those music files
[22:01] <Jusii> so there is usermod command https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Change_username
[22:01] <zleap> a good way to share files with other users on the same system
