[2:14] <fred1807> I have a project I want to share with people so they can easily install on theier sd cards, no matter what size it is. For this project I have 3 partitions: boot, system (1gb) and media (that should use all the free space). My goal is to have a script user should only run once, after the sd card is cloned. This script should make this 3rd partiion (media) expand to all the free space left on card. Any suggestion on how to do this?

[2:44] <Sander^home> Do anyone have a guide to setting up mobile internet as a backup internet to wifi?
[2:44] <Sander^home> on a pi
[2:45] <Sander^home> with a dongle
[2:47] <tjcarter> I don't have one immediately available, but I can tell you that there's a shortcut to finding one: Networking on a Pi using Raspbian is the exact same as networking on Debian.

[9:01] <FrEaKmAn_> hi all... anyone played with win10?
[9:02] <FrEaKmAn_> I'm trying to run .exe programs and based on forums, wine is not a solution as it won't work
[9:02] <FrEaKmAn_> so maybe running it under win10 could solve the problem

[9:05] <FrEaKmAn_> ok
[9:06] <NedScott> not unless the program has been recompiled to do so, assuming it was made using the more "modern" windows APIs (for a lack of better wording)

[9:24] <Karlton> you could do that but it would be slow

[15:15] <crusty> actually fstab shouldn't be an issue as /boot loads first anyway

[16:30] <Apocx> Raxda Rock would require I edit the kernel to get my 4G modem working. The changes are simple, is getting the kernel to compile a pain in the ass or relatively straight forward?
[16:30] <Apocx> for Linux in general I mean
[16:30] * robh71 (~robh71@68-116-223-3.dhcp.sprn.tx.charter.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[16:30] <mgottschlag> *relatively* straight forward.
[16:30] <mgottschlag> depends on your experience of course, but most other programs are more complex to compile
[16:31] <Apocx> alright cool
[16:31] <mgottschlag> easy when you compile it on the device itself
[16:31] <Apocx> I'm a programmer, so I'm confident I can manage it, I just don't feel like tracking down a hundred different dependencies
[16:31] <mgottschlag> (just copy the config from the running system, and "make oldconfig")
[16:31] <mgottschlag> no dependencies except for the compiler
[16:31] <mgottschlag> that's the nice part
[16:31] <Apocx> that's what I assumed, so awesome
[16:31] <Apocx> thanks
[16:31] <mgottschlag> the bad part are the 100s of pages of configurable options
[16:31] <Apocx> heh
[16:32] <mgottschlag> okay, not quite, but almost, and "make oldconfig" chooses sane defaults

[16:33] <shiftplusone> for a pi 2, first use make bcm2709_defconfig
[16:33] <mgottschlag> when you "make oldconfig", the system will let you choose only those options which were not present in your current config
[16:33] <mgottschlag> (because of newer kernel versions etc)
[16:33] <mgottschlag> make menuconfig then lets you tune everything
[16:33] <Apocx> ah cool
[16:33] <Apocx> thanks

[20:49] <crusty> just thought that for a pi, distro with musl instead of glibc would be nice
[20:50] <SpeakerToMeat> crusty: And that distro is pi 2 compatible? does it have the right kernel?
[20:51] <crusty> as the name says void-*rpi2*-musl-rootfs-20150713
[20:51] <crusty> they also have documentation for rpi 2
[20:52] <SpeakerToMeat> do you get any image from the pi? a circular color gradient?

[20:53] * Sisco (~Sisco@unaffiliated/sisco) has joined #raspberrypi
[20:53] <crusty> I was following this guide https://github.com/voidlinux/documentation/wiki/Raspberry-Pi
[20:53] <crusty> so I made partitions alone
[20:53] <crusty> without .img
[20:54] <crusty> and on hdmi, the outcome is just some random colors
[20:54] <crusty> also the pi was waorking with NOOBs
[20:54] <SpeakerToMeat> "random" colors you mean a square with a gradient? afaik that means firmware loaded.
[20:54] <crusty> working*
[20:54] <SpeakerToMeat> Yes but now you're not using noobs anymore

[20:57] <crusty> it also has a boot flag
[20:57] <SpeakerToMeat> afaik boot flag is not required for the pi.
[20:58] <crusty> kernel.img
[20:58] <crusty> not kernel7.img
[20:58] <SpeakerToMeat> No kernel7.img ? hmmm
[20:58] <crusty> maybe I should update the firmware itself?
[20:59] <SpeakerToMeat> By convention afaik the firmware will load automatically kernel7.img for the pi 2, but I'm guessing this might be overraidable on config.txt
[20:59] <crusty> brb. quick reboot

[21:10] <SpeakerToMeat> That's the kernel command line/environment. but the kernel to be used should be specified in config.txt under the kernel= setting
[21:10] <SpeakerToMeat> If it's not specified, the default is kernel.img for pi 1 A/B/B+ and kernel7.img for Pi 2 (B+)
[21:11] <SpeakerToMeat> It's possible for kernel.img to be a pi 2 kernel image, but IDK if firmware will "fall back" to it lacking a kernel7.img file

[21:50] <FrankFromHR> b3nn1: so it just streams the frames out and syncs it with the audio track basically?
[21:50] <SpeakerToMeat> mattrichardson: It consists of multiple files, images and audio come in a specific formulation (two possible) MXF files, nowadays using jpeg2000 images for video, pcm 24 bit wavs for sound. Originally mpeg2 was acceptable for video too

[21:54] <mattrichardson> SpeakerToMeat interesting stuff!
[21:54] <mattrichardson> SpeakerToMeat: Does Raspberry Pi figure into your work at all, or is a side hobby?
[21:55] <SpeakerToMeat> mattrichardson: There's a de-facto standard of using CRU enclosures, because they're "more secure", in actuallity, they're secure insertion wise and designed for military use, but have no advantages for cinema use, and people sometimes shove shitty HDDs into there and think it's all secure now.

[21:56] <SpeakerToMeat> mattrichardson: Thing is also many (most?) servers do not come with a cru bay now, so most times you have to connect the cru via USB with a base to ingest the movie, and it can be bloody slow (the media server will also ingest the movie very slow anyhow if it's projecting while it's ingesting)

[21:59] <FrankFromHR> SpeakerToMeat: Yeah that would be pretty slow to copy off using USB..
[21:59] <SpeakerToMeat> FrankFromHR: Well, thing is, you want mobile disks for bumpy resiliance. if you want to use bays, normally you need an enclosure of which most are propietary like CRU and not normally natively designed for 3.5 drives.

[22:03] <FrankFromHR> b3nn1: hah nice
[22:05] <SpeakerToMeat> FrankFromHR: Dude, it's sesiously ugly: http://www.cinedigital.tv/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Interfaz-Dolby-374x250.jpg
[22:05] <SpeakerToMeat> nid0: I know a very little about smoke machine theory but not much more
[22:05] <FrankFromHR> SpeakerToMeat: It's Java, so it's probably slow as well :)

[22:06] <b3nn1> I hate the doremi UI... feels like a real old linux os
[22:06] <b3nn1> but it just works
[22:06] <nid0> SpeakerToMeat: hoping more for practical operation really - i'm trying to rig up a smoke machine that's at least kinda automatically controlled but is also as cheap as possible, cheap machines don't typically seem to have an inbuilt timer or DMX capability though
[22:07] <nid0> so was thinking of rigging up a timer-controlled power socket for it and bypassing the push-to-make-smoke buttons the machines typically have, but have no idea how consistent the warmup time for them is
[22:08] <SpeakerToMeat> nid0: controlling emision wont be too hard, normally these work with a simple button trigger, which you can handle easily with a triac/mosfet via gpio... some of these are limited by timer, some simply by engineering/pyshics. the tube needs to be at a certain temperature for the machine to work
[22:09] <SpeakerToMeat> The warmup will change for each machine and depend on their wattage
[22:09] * Kaboon (~Kaboon@524A74DE.cm-4-3b.dynamic.ziggo.nl) Quit (Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
[22:09] <SpeakerToMeat> if you wsih, you could use a thermistor or similar in an analog in (or with an adc), to control temperature
[22:10] <nid0> I was thinking more for a single machine - as these cheap ones do seem very cheaply made I assume there's some variance in the amount of time they'll take to get up to temp, if a machine quotes say 3 minutes to warm up I have no idea if that means that 3:01 after powering it on itll be ready to go 100% of the time, or whether sometimes it might take 3:30 to get up to temp
[22:11] <nid0> because if i'm firing the make-smoke button "blind" the controller will have no knowledge of whether the machine's actually ready, so if the timing's out it wont do anything

[22:13] <SpeakerToMeat> Normally cheap machines can't go all the time
[22:13] <SpeakerToMeat> since they do not have the watage to keep the tube element hot enough after a long discharge
[22:13] <nid0> yeah I know itll just be short bursts, which just adds to the problem of basically guessing whether it's ready to fire
[22:13] <nid0> unless the amount of time any given machine takes to get up to temperature is always going to be the same down to a margin of a few seconds
[22:13] <SpeakerToMeat> Yes if you want to depend on firability, you'll need a temperature sensor of some sort on the heater tube
[22:14] <SpeakerToMeat> Not really, as environment affect it (air temperature, pressure)
[22:15] <nid0> I also have a fun guessing game of trying to find one that's relatively quiet - obviously the nozzle is always going to hiss when firing but some seem to have pumps that're effectively silent, and others sound like a freight train coming
