[2:16] <blooom> in theory I should be able to see it as a mtd device but the glue to get to that point is a little unclear to me

[10:59] <SyncYourDogmas> http://www.tcpdump.org/tcpdump_man.html
[11:00] <ShorTie> the name tells all, tcpdump - dump traffic on a network
[11:01] <SyncYourDogmas> cpdump prints out a description of the contents of packets on a network interface that match the boolean expression; the description is preceded by a time stamp, printed, by default, as hours, minutes, seconds, and fractions of a second since midnight. It can also be run with the -wflag, which causes it to save the packet data to a file for later analysis, and/or with the -rflag, which causes it to read from a saved packet fi
[11:01] <ShorTie> 2.4ghz is not a network, but a frequency
[11:01] <SyncYourDogmas> Trust me
[11:01] <SyncYourDogmas> It captures from interfaces
[11:01] <SyncYourDogmas> It can see the interface it can capture
[11:01] <freezevee> so you mean to capture from /dev/spidev0.0
[11:04] <SyncYourDogmas> When parsing and printing, in addition to printing the headers of each packet, print the data of each packet (minus its link level header) in hex and ASCII. This is very handy for analysing new protocols
[11:05] <SyncYourDogmas> It might not understand, it'll capture it though
[11:05] <Kamilion> i think pcap can capture from a bunch of different kinds of sources
[11:05] <Kamilion> so wireshark can interpret them later

[12:21] <ShorTie> but i'm cheap and patient, so normally go with the free shipping, lol.
[12:21] <nid0> that doesn't sound any better to me than pretty much any chinese seller, whenever I buy stuff from ebay/amazon from chinese sellers its generally around a week to deliver with free shipping
[12:22] <ShorTie> mine can take a month .. :(~

[12:24] <nid0> course, both cables in one pair did burst into flames the instant I tried using each of them for the first time, but there ya go
[12:24] <Armand> Hahaha
[12:25] <nid0> literally, a huge puff of magic smoke billowed out the A end of the cables the instant I plugged them in
[12:25] <Armand> O_O
[12:25] <nid0> the first one I didn't react immediately so the plastic shrout is melted to hell, the second one I was ready and yanked it straight out

[17:35] <nakasi> Raspberry Pi is such an unpredictable thing. You can't tell if on 23nd boot it'll suddenly assign arbitrary IP to wireless interface and lock you out.

[17:36] <shiftplusone> nakasi: that doesn't sound pi-related at all. what's the ip you're getting? chances are you're not getting a dhcp offer from your AP

[17:39] <nakasi> I made it a hostapd access point and once every few boots it just doesn't work. Tt either doesn't assign any IP stated in /etc/network/interfaces to wlan0 (which in turn breaks DHCP server) or assigns some unknown arbitrary invalid address like 169.254.59.72 etc. etc.

[19:12] <NullMoogleCable> dumb question, could raspberry pi use a isa card using i2c expanders?
[19:12] <pksato> NullMoogleCable: no.
[19:12] <Kamilion> in theory, it would be possible, if you knew the bus address the ISA device took; but using the drivers? No.
[19:13] <pksato> but, that kind of isa card you want to use?
[19:14] <NullMoogleCable> any :D
[19:14] <pksato> http://arstech.com/install/ecom-prodshow/usb2isar.html
[19:14] <SpeedEvil> NullMoogleCable: Technically, yes - you'd want to use GPIO
[19:15] <SpeedEvil> pksato: wacky
[19:15] <plugwash> NullMoogleCable, most likely it would be possible but need custom drivers and would be excruciatingly slow for anything but the most trivial of cards
[19:17] <plugwash> If I had to do it I would probablly use a CPLD instead of expander chips so I could do some of the low level bus stuff in hardware.
[19:18] <SpeedEvil> plugwash: I'm not sure in principle it would be horribly slow if you dedicated a Pi2 core
[19:20] <plugwash> mmm, actually with a CPLD doing the low level bus work and using high speed SPI instead of I2C it could actually be quite reasonable
[19:20] <plugwash> (note: I am not voulanteering to implement such a thing for free)

[19:21] <SpeedEvil> ^GPIO, not SPI/I2C
[19:22] <SpeedEvil> plugwash: the sensible solution (for varying values of sensible) would probably be to get a LPC to ISA bridge
[19:22] <plugwash> hmm, not sure if you would have enough pins for a direct GPIO drive
[19:23] <plugwash> though maybe you could get away with just a couple of latch chips and do muxed data/address reasonablly fast
[19:23] <SpeedEvil> LPC is low-pin-count
[19:23] * bizarro_1 (~bizarro_1@161.Red-83-53-192.dynamicIP.rima-tde.net) has joined #raspberrypi

[19:24] * plugwash hasn't looked at LPC
[19:24] <SpeedEvil> It was never exposed as a consumer bus
[19:24] <SpeedEvil> It was designed as something to be integrated onto motherboards and connect super-IO chips to
[19:25] <SpeedEvil> so the floppy/... super-IO chip would hang off it
[19:25] <shiftplusone> In semi-related news... An SMI driver: https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/pull/1105
[19:27] <NullMoogleCable> smi ... then you could use a pi for a 68K system..
[19:29] <plugwash> SpeedEvil, yeah I know that, what I mean is I've never had reason to look at it's details on an electrical level
[19:30] <plugwash> so i've no idea if it would be easier or harder to interface to a Pi than it would be to knock up some verilog in a CPLD and give myself whatever Pi-side interface I wanted
[19:31] * Encrypt (~Chuck-nor@AMontsouris-553-1-34-16.w92-151.abo.wanadoo.fr) Quit (Quit: Dinner time!)
[19:32] <Kamilion> in general, the 68k systems didn't exceed 100mhz, and in practice (outside of a couple specific types of hardware with '030s and above) was limited to 8Mhz.
[19:33] <NullMoogleCable> so in theory you could rig a pi to a mac se?
[19:33] <SpeedEvil> plugwash: Or just don't do that
[19:33] <SpeedEvil> http://www.ht-lab.com/freecores/cpu8086/cpu86.html
[19:35] <Kamilion> not just in theory, but in practice. I'm pretty sure there's a packaged version of vmac in the repositories
[19:36] <Kamilion> just need an SE30's rom
[19:36] <Kamilion> besides, it's not the 030 that was tough, it was the 060

[19:38] <traeak> one thing i noticed earlier today. with laptops getting to be so damn cheap it seems like computer monitor prices are kind of high
[19:38] <niston> hey cool. I heard shiftplusone is going to release an ISA addon board for the Pi :P
[19:38] <Kamilion> AFAIK, a few amiga accelerator cards, one or two 'workstation' machines, and some other embedded hardware.
[19:38] <shiftplusone> niston: lies!
[19:38] <niston> hehe
[19:39] <Kamilion> the powerpc arch took over from there, dooming the m68k arch to obscurity, despite it's wonderfully well thought out design

[19:44] <Kamilion> pksato: exactly -- and in that case, the pi is still a good choice; but there's no way you can keep using your old DOS based industrial/scientific software ;)
[19:44] <Kamilion> but someone would likely just build a cable-harness adapter to the pi's GPIO header instead of trying to impliment an ISA design

[21:53] <monsti> do i need a cross over cable for rj45?
[21:53] <monsti> i think that was called "autosensing" but not sure
[21:54] * brethil (~brethil@2.236.134.159) has joined #raspberrypi
[21:54] <ShorTie> other then Cisco stuff, cross over cable went out years ago
[21:55] <nid0> cables are cables these days
[21:55] <monsti> that still doesn't answer my question
[21:55] <monsti> will i need a cross over cable if i plug the pi directly to my printer rj45?
[21:55] <monsti> the printer is 2014
[21:56] <shiftplusone> monsti: as others have said, no.
[21:56] <monsti> thx
[21:56] <nid0> I don't see how ShorTie's answer doesn't answer your question
[21:56] <shiftplusone> only one side needs auto mdx magic.
[21:56] <monsti> so that's true for the pi

[21:59] <GenteelBen> monsti: no.
[21:59] <monsti> well ;)
[22:00] <monsti> then we have no answer, as the other device is a printer
[22:00] <GenteelBen> You only needed crossover cables if you wanted to connect two switches, two routers or two PCs and your ethernet ports didn't support autosensing.
[22:00] <GenteelBen> monsti: you need a Monsti Cable.
[22:00] <monsti> sorry for asking stupid questions
[22:00] <GenteelBen> $500 Cat6a with a braided sheath.
[22:00] <monsti> i'd like to rtfm

[22:00] <monsti> i.c.
[22:00] <GenteelBen> It's what I'm saying right now.
[22:01] <GenteelBen> Is this a 20 year old printer, btw?
[22:03] <shiftplusone> monsti: yes, the pi does atuo.mdx magic, you won't ever need a crossover cable for the pi
[22:03] <shiftplusone> *auto mdix....
