[1:57] <nakasi> Which I/O (if any at all) is controlled by a custom chip? Is HDMI controlled by main CPU?
[1:58] * brethil (~brethil@2.236.134.159) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:58] * mgottschlag (~quassel@reactos/tester/phoenix64) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[1:58] <SpeedEvil> you mean the LAN* chip?
[1:59] <SpeedEvil> It's not a custom part, it's a USB hub and LAN controller
[1:59] * TMan459 (~TMan459@68-113-228-103.dhcp.stpt.wi.charter.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:00] * ctrlshftn (~ctrlshftn@unaffiliated/ctrlshftn) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:01] <nakasi> SpeedEvil: in general, not just that LAN chip.
[2:01] <[Saint]> nakasi: are you aware of how hilariously vague that question is?
[2:02] <[Saint]> No one could possibly have any idea what you mean.
[2:02] <[Saint]> 'custom chip'? seriously? :) That could be _anything_.
[2:02] * ctrlshftn (~ctrlshftn@unaffiliated/ctrlshftn) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[2:02] <nakasi> [Saint]: more like if there are e.g. outputs on the SoC for HDMI or does it communicate e.g. via I2C to a HDMI controller. That's what I meant.
[2:03] <nakasi> It seems that SoC handles almost everything, I was just asking if if handles any input or output indirectly (we've already discussed the LAN chip).
[2:04] * ctrlshftn (~ctrlshftn@unaffiliated/ctrlshftn) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:04] * ctrlshftn is now known as ctrlshftn_
[2:04] * ctrlshftn_ is now known as ctrlshftn
[2:04] <nakasi> There's a lot of stuff on the board, it _has_ to do something, not just regulate power, right?
[2:04] <Apocx> I think the main chip handles HDMI
[2:04] <nakasi> If that question is impossible to answer (because nobody has datasheet for that thing) it's okay.
[2:04] <Apocx> cause the Pi Compute can do HDMI too
[2:04] <Apocx> and that doesn't have much on it as far as chips go
[2:05] * PKodon (~PKodon@unaffiliated/pkodon) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:05] <pksato> nakasi: except for ethernet controller, all function is done by main SoC.
[2:05] <nakasi> pksato: thanks.
[2:05] <[Saint]> nakasi: the question is difficult to answer because it's not clear if you know what you mean or it's being mangled in the process of asking it.
[2:05] <[Saint]> what is "it" in this context?
[2:05] <pksato> no extra glue chip to HDMI.
[2:07] * wiiguy (~fake@unaffiliated/wiiguy) Quit (Quit: The Kirito is always right foundation. Grand reopening)

[2:15] * nakasi (~nakasi@unaffiliated/nakasi) Quit (Quit: nakasi)
[2:17] <Apocx> Man I'd kill for a Pi with an internal USB header on it. I really would
[2:18] <Apocx> maybe I need to bite the bullet and just make something for the Pi Compute

[3:36] <pksato> ?
[3:38] <doomlord> pci, i dont thinkso
[3:38] <doomlord> i actually want something like that strangely
[3:38] <pksato> have usb vga cards
[3:38] <doomlord> an ARM + a big videocard. howwever unbalanced it might be
[3:39] <[Saint]> It's not like the pi GPU is a slouch.
[3:39] <doomlord> oh those USB framebuffer things, sure , but when you say video-card i assume a 3d card
[3:39] <Atroc> doomlord: well. i found http://www.dx.com/p/pci-to-dv-video-capture-card-black-silver-274021#.Vdkin_lgKM8 which is a pci gpu. so i ask
[3:39] * EastLight (~n@90.219.72.147) Quit ()

[3:43] <pksato> looking for card like nvidia or ati/amd?
[3:43] <doomlord> imagine if you could get a little arm board that could drive a GPU
[3:43] <ozzzy> like a Pi?
[3:43] <[Saint]> Like a pi doomlord?
[3:44] <doomlord> i mean a big external gpu
[3:44] * brethil (~brethil@2.236.134.159) Quit (Quit: brethil)

[3:44] <Atroc> pksato: yeah like an external mali gpu
[3:44] <ozzzy> fwiw the Pi has a kickass gpu
[3:44] <doomlord> thats' what i wanted.. a Parallela, with ability to connect to an external GPU
[3:45] <doomlord> (which doesn't exist of course, one oftheir sticking points is no PCIe)
[3:45] <ozzzy> sounds like a project to me
[3:45] <pksato> why? VideoCore IV is not enough for you?
[3:46] <Atroc> doomlord: wouldnt it be possible to connect the Parallella to the Pi and use the gpu of the Pi?
[3:46] <Atroc> but no. its not.. i think i have to buy a second pi
[3:47] <Atroc> for every screen one
[3:47] <doomlord> thats been done
[3:47] <doomlord> that is an interesting config i guess

[3:51] <Karlton> They don't like to release their firmware code
[3:52] <ozzzy> they don't need to
[3:52] <Karlton> no but they should
[3:52] * xchar (~Fred@bencom.co.nz) Quit (Quit: Ima huntin wabbit.)

[3:53] * TheHacker66 (~TheHacker@ppp-128-29.30-151.libero.it) has joined #raspberrypi

[3:56] <ozzzy> um.... it's proprietary code
[3:56] <ozzzy> tjat
[3:56] <ozzzy> that's reason enough
[3:56] <Karlton> that's why its bad
[3:57] <ozzzy> so buy something else
[3:57] <Karlton> and it isn't just proprietary software, it is proprietary software that can access memory and it's required for you to even boot
[3:57] <ozzzy> [shrug]
[3:57] <ozzzy> see above

[4:01] <[Saint]> If you dislike propreitary firmware that has extremely low level access then I sincerely hope you don't own a mobile phone.
[4:03] <[Saint]> I don't see anyone all up in arms petitioning for the release of their baseband firmware
[4:03] <Karlton> yeah I don't but that isn't the only reason
[4:05] <Karlton> Mobile phones are bad for number of reasons
[4:06] <Karlton> and true for all phones is that the communication is unencrypted
[4:06] <Karlton> anyone can wiretap them
[4:06] <Karlton> it's 2015 we need to come up with something better

[12:31] <zvonimir> I mean, I know I could follow this http://sowingseasons.com/blog/building-python-3-4-on-raspberry-pi-2.html and compile it but why if there's a repo already :)
[12:33] <ShorTie> like i said, it is a jessie thing, https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=python3.4
[12:34] <ShorTie> so if you upgrade to jessie, you can just apt-get it
[12:34] <zvonimir> ShorTie: what does it mean? :\
[12:34] <zvonimir> What's jessie
[12:35] <ShorTie> Debian give there releases names
[12:35] <ShorTie> current raspbian is wheezy
[12:35] <ShorTie> which is old stable
[12:35] <zvonimir> oh...
[12:35] <ShorTie> the 'new' stable is called jessie

[12:37] <ShorTie> your guess is as good as anyones, they seem to be in no hurry though
[12:37] <zvonimir> I think I'll be safer compiling python3.4 :P
[12:38] <ShorTie> you can upgrade to jessie by changing wheezy to jessie in /etc/apt/sources.list
[12:38] <Lope> has anyone upgraded to RbPi2B to Jessie? I did it once, but since then I'm having huge troubles.
[12:38] <ShorTie> then doing a update/upgrade/dist-upgrade
[12:38] * oxhak (~OxHaK@unaffiliated/oxhak) has joined #raspberrypi
[12:39] <ShorTie> personally, i'd just switch to jessiue so you got all the right things
[12:39] <Lope> After upgrading to Jessie for 2 hours (I've done it twice now), my 2B takes 3 minutes to boot and I have to enter into a rescue console, and it's all messed up. reboot and shutdown -h now don't even work.
[12:39] <zvonimir> I've found the instructions online, but cosidering Lope's experience, I'm not so sure about it...
[12:39] <ShorTie> sounds like you didn't some of the questions right to me
[12:39] <Lope> The first time I upgraded, it was beautiful. But since then... hell!
[12:40] <ShorTie> i've upgraded numerous times with no problemo's
[12:40] <Lope> The weird thing, is that my 2B that was running a good installation of Jessie... I ran apt-get dist-upgrade on it, and it got messed up, like the last 2 installs I've done. So I don't even have a "GOOD" Jessie install to clone.

[12:42] <Lope> so I'm attempting ANOTHER Jessie install. I've downloaded a FRESH wheezy image 2015-05-05 and running apt-get dist-upgrade on it. Then I'll switch the sources in /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/apt/sources.d/*.list (except collabora) from wheezy to Jessie. and try dist-upgrade again
[12:43] <ShorTie> you gotta do a upgrade 1st
[12:43] <Lope> Yes, that's what I said.
[12:43] <ShorTie> <ShorTie> then doing a update/upgrade/dist-upgrade
[12:43] <Lope> I'll run a dist-upgrade on wheezy sources, then dist-upgrade on jessie sources.
[12:43] <ShorTie> sorry, no you didn't
[12:43] <at0m|c> Lope: mind you, debian does not support downgrades
[12:43] <ShorTie> no need to mess with wheezy
[12:44] <Lope> at0m|c: Downgrades don't concern me, thanks.
[12:44] <at0m|c> ok, just in case you'd consider reverting
[12:44] <Lope> ShorTie: you're mistaken. Please re-read what I said.
[12:44] <ShorTie> there is only 1 question you do not want to take the defualt answer too
[12:45] <Lope> I've run a dist-upgrade on wheezy sources, it's almost done. Then will switch sources to jessie and dist-upgrade again.
[12:46] * ShorTie re-reads and once again only see's 'and try dist-upgrade again'
[12:46] <Lope> ShorTie: the 1st dist-upgrade is on wheezy, 2nd dist-upgrade is on Jessie, I've said this repeatedly.
[12:47] <Lope> I've been wondering about ways to make this awfully slow upgrade process faster.
[12:47] <ShorTie> but once again, i'm saying your not following the correct proceedure!!

[12:48] <Lope> ShorTie: are you suggesting that you have to do an upgrade then a dist-upgrade?
[12:48] <ShorTie> no, i'm saying you have to do a 'update/upgrade/dist-upgrade'
[12:48] <at0m|c> ^
[12:48] <ShorTie> so basically, Yes
[12:49] <Lope> as in 3 steps?
[12:49] <ShorTie> yes sir
[12:49] <Lope> well, the update is obvious.
[12:49] <Lope> Wow, I've never heard of that.
[12:49] <at0m|c> get lasted updates before upgrade
[12:49] <ShorTie> 4 if you count the edit
[12:50] <Lope> I thought basically upgrade upgrades whatever you've got, dist-upgrade upgrades what you've got and allows upgrading to packages from the new distribution?
[12:50] <Lope> Okay, that might explain why my system gets buggered.
[12:51] <Lope> Well, I've just run a dist-upgrade on wheezy, I'm gonna reboot it now and check it out. Do you think I should nuke it and start with a fresh wheezy?
[12:51] <ShorTie> take the defualt answers on everything but '/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf', answer no and then " sed -i 's/#autologin-user=/autologin-user=pi/' /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf "
[12:52] <ShorTie> doesn't matter, your changing out 700+ packages, so it takes awhile
[12:52] <Lope> Well, I've run a dist-upgrade on a fresh wheezy and rebooted. It doesn't seem to be broken.
[12:52] <Lope> But I'll take your advice from now on.
[12:52] <ShorTie> there is another option if no gui is needed, and that is do a minimal install
[12:53] <Lope> Do you think I should wipe my wheezy that I've just dist-upgraded without an upgrade?
[12:53] <Lope> (it's still on wheezy sources)
[12:53] <ShorTie> doesn't matter
[12:53] <Lope> So you don't think I should wipe it?
[12:54] <ShorTie> doesn't matter
[12:54] <Lope> Is it only important to run an upgrade when you switch from wheezy to jessie?
[12:54] <Lope> but if you're on the same sources as you were before, a dist-upgrade is okay without an upgrade?
[12:54] <ShorTie> No

[23:56] <Lope> Anyone used exfat much? Has it been reliable? I was basically uploading a large file from a USB FD. I Ctrl-C'd the upload a few times and resumed a few times. The last time I tried to resume the file was *GONE*. I unmounted and remounted and exfat complained about a bad dismount. I basically reformatted copied the file onto it again and resumed.
