[0:55] <Phrohdoh> Hey guys, looking to grab an rpi2 to host a small site on, with relatively few hits (hoping here, of course, that someone doesnt spam it). Current plan is to just host logs of my irc channel on it, is there anything in specific I should know? Is one rpi os more suited/lightweight, should I keep it plugged into ethernet instead of wifi? etc
[0:56] <uvoa> ethernet is definitely better for speed/reliability
[0:56] <CoJaBo> Ethernet.
[0:56] <CoJaBo> Find a webserver setup guide recomended for the pi
[0:57] <CoJaBo> Nginx would probably be OK; I'd turn off logging to save writes to the card tho
[0:57] <Phrohdoh> I'll probably write to a drive instead of the card directly
[0:57] <Phrohdoh> for that reason alone
[0:58] <Phrohdoh> But I'm new to webhosting so no clue what the best way to go about things are.

[9:34] <icemanbp> it's a shield to connect grove sensors, like light sensor, buttons, leds, air quality sensor
[9:34] <niston> hmm. actually I might have heard of it.
[9:34] <icemanbp> it connect over the raspy through the GPIO
[9:35] <niston> have not tried it though.
[9:35] <icemanbp> I want to swith on/off the light of my room through raspy
[9:36] <icemanbp> but I want do it with a wifi connection, I don't want any wires around the room
[9:36] <niston> I suggest getting one of em wireless remote controlled lamp switch thingies
[9:36] <niston> you can use a 433MHz transmitter on the raspi with most of em
[9:36] <icemanbp> ok, but this time is the lamp
[9:36] <icemanbp> next time could be lock/unlock the door
[9:36] <niston> you could also try hack something up with an ESP8266 board
[9:36] <icemanbp> I see that exists a wireless module (esp8266)
[9:37] <niston> control a relay, or a triac (dimmer)
[9:37] <icemanbp> but I need the wireless over the raspy to comunicate with all that things
[9:37] <niston> no problem
[9:37] <niston> just add wlan dongle to raspi
[9:37] <icemanbp> are you never used that component (esp8266)
[9:37] <niston> EPS8266 use standard WiFi
[9:37] <niston> haven't. but am expecting to. the chinas are sending me a bunch of 'em modules.
[9:38] <niston> they be here in like, 30 to 45 days, they said!
[9:38] * skyroveRR (~skyroveRR@unaffiliated/skyroverr) Quit (Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
[9:38] <icemanbp> I found it on robot-italy website
[9:39] <icemanbp> so for the raspberry I just need a usb wifi adapter right?
[9:39] <niston> yups
[9:39] * DReynolds (~DReynolds@cpc71839-nrwh10-2-0-cust26.4-4.cable.virginm.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
[9:39] <niston> or hook the raspi up to an access point (via ethernet)
[9:39] <niston> that could work, too
[9:41] <icemanbp> ok
[9:41] <icemanbp> but I think it's better configuring a new subnet
[9:41] <niston> why?
[9:41] <icemanbp> such as 192.168.10.*
[9:41] <icemanbp> so I need a wireless module
[9:41] <niston> not neccessarily
[9:41] <niston> you can load more than one IP on an ethernet
[9:41] <niston> well
[9:42] <niston> maybe not for different subnets
[9:42] * dastaan (~dastaan@1.39.96.167) has joined #raspberrypi
[9:42] <niston> although
[9:42] <niston> it should be possible. I mean, wintendo can do it, so why not the penguin?
[9:43] <niston> but yeah, a dongle will work as well.
[9:43] <icemanbp> I think it's more "clear"
[9:43] <icemanbp> sensors stuff stay on its own subnet
[9:43] <niston> sure, why not
[9:44] * dastaan (~dastaan@1.39.96.167) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)

[9:45] <icemanbp> I will try
[9:46] <icemanbp> I want to start internet of things on my own :D
[9:46] <niston> thats good
[9:46] <icemanbp> do you ever try some hardware project with raspy?
[9:47] <Vostok> icemanbp: where does the y come from in raspy?
[9:47] <Vostok> abbreviation of raspberry? :P
[9:47] <icemanbp> ye, why? :D
[9:48] <Vostok> just that it's usually called raspi
[9:48] <Armand> rPi :)
[9:48] <Vostok> or that

[9:52] <niston> err... on it now

[9:55] <icemanbp> ok, I just using python
[9:55] <msev-> hello guys, did anyone of you ever try to stream music from 1 RPI to multiple bluetooth speakers?
[9:56] <msev-> to each speaker their own song, podcast, internetradio
[9:56] <msev-> that would require multiple mpd instances right
[9:56] * XpineX (~XpineX@89.239.206.2) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[9:57] <at0m> and multiple BT sticks - few can connect multiple AD2P, and they're expensive

[9:58] <msev-> oh at0m you are here also :D

[10:02] <msev-> at0m, so how does this multiple mpd idea correlate with the pulseaudio idea you had yesterday?
[10:02] <msev-> is it two possible options to the problem?
[10:02] <at0m> mpd is a player. if you want multiple streams from mpd, you need multiple mpd instances.
[10:03] <at0m> you did not mention mpd yesterday
[10:03] * esas (~esas@unaffiliated/esas) Quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
[10:04] <at0m> you can set each audio device per mpd, or even add all the outputs on a system to each mpd instance. just don't _enable_ same output in different mpd instances
[10:04] * XpineX (~XpineX@89.239.206.2) has joined #raspberrypi
[10:04] <at0m> so no need for pulseaudio there
[10:05] <at0m> initially you talked of same stream to multiple BT speakers, for that you'd use pulseaudio
[10:05] <msev-> atom what about playing locally on connected speakers + just streaming to one bluetooth speaker at a time, that would be ok for a normal bluetooth dongle
[10:05] <at0m> (or at least didnt mention different playback streams)
[10:05] <at0m> yup
[10:05] <msev-> so that there would be multiple bluetooth speakers but streaming just to one at a time (in addition to local connected speakers)
[10:06] <msev-> cool
[10:06] <at0m> you can add all the available audio devices to each mpd really
[10:06] <at0m> you just cannot send to same BT device from multiple players
[10:06] <msev-> then I can just choose, maybe with MPDroid on my android phone, right
[10:06] <at0m> yup
[10:07] <msev-> great thats good enough :)
[10:07] <at0m> not that i've tried - but that's the theory :)
[10:07] <msev-> cool :)
[10:08] <at0m> i do enable multiple outputs with mpd, but that's analog/hdmi stream and http stream
[10:09] <msev-> at0m, have you ever heard of volumio? since if you had I'd ask you some more questions :)
[10:09] <at0m> never used it

[10:32] <at0m> does BT ever sync? idk. must be some ugly resampling if it does.
[10:32] <msev-> I'd even not be able to do that with a regular bt dongle right?
[10:33] <msev-> would need that expensive ad2p
[10:33] <at0m> msev-: iiuc, you'd need multiple dongles or expensive one
[10:33] <niston> at0m: some simply drop a frame every now and then
[10:33] <msev-> yes
[10:33] <niston> but yeah
[10:33] <at0m> niston: or add

[10:35] <msev-> at0m, do you think it would complicate things alot if I were to use two bluetooth dongles, for streaming to two bluetooth speakers simultaniously (+local speakers), would the rpi2 even have enough cpu in your opinion

[10:36] <niston> back in ye olde days, with dialup, maybe more of a problem :>
[10:36] <at0m> i stream lossless to androids here

[10:37] <niston> yeah
[10:37] <niston> cool
[10:37] <niston> cuz I was thinking about adding PCM multicast to my radio

[10:37] <niston> good to know

[16:49] <Suedish> So if that's not it, then what are some other possible reasons?
[16:49] <Suedish> Incompatible SD card?
[16:49] <Suedish> Afaik when I power it on, the green light is supposed to be flashing right?

[16:52] <Suedish> Still not working after another format, both red and green light as steadily on (and quite bright)
[16:52] <nid0> do you have a local screen hooked up to the pi?
[16:53] <Suedish> I do, nothing showing
[16:53] <Suedish> http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-microSDHC-SDC10-8GBET/dp/B008EODGHS
[16:53] <Suedish> That's the card I'm using
[16:56] <nid0> i'd suggest putting the card back in its reader and verifying that the first partition is fat formatted and that bootcode.bin exists
[16:56] * lemonzest (~lemonzest@unaffiliated/lemonzest) has joined #raspberrypi
[16:56] <Suedish> Yep i's FAT formatted, and the bootcode.bin is in the root
[16:56] <nid0> afaik a solid green light on b+ means the card has been read correctly but it can't locate bootcode.bin

[16:58] <Ywa> Ok I got my raspberry pi touchscreen working. Anyone here who has one? Cus I'm having resolution troubles with it
[16:58] <Ywa> There's a black bar around the screen, but when I start Minecraftpi for example, it's actually displaying out of the GUI frame
[16:58] <nid0> Suedish: have you tried a different power supply?
[16:59] <Ywa> Resolution seems to be wrong as well. 752x448 which should be a bit higher
[16:59] <Suedish> nid0, I've only tried with this one I got actually. You think that might be an issue? I didn't think of it as the lights lit up and stuff
[16:59] <nid0> Suedish: basically, follow through this troubleshooting guide: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=58151
[16:59] <nid0> if your power supply is woefully insufficient it could cause problems reading the card, yes
