[4:04] * Jimu (~chatzilla@unaffiliated/jimu) has joined #raspberrypi
[4:06] <Jimu> question: if you, like me, want to use your RPi in different environments, some with WiFi DHCP, some with wired static ips.... is there a way to script it so it can tell which environment it is in and set it's NIC appropriately?
[4:06] * sigsts (~sigsts@unaffiliated/skyroverr) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)

[4:08] <kookie> I'm sure there is a way, but it would be one heck of a task to build the script.
[4:08] * citizen-stig (~citizen-s@89.221.207.219) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[4:09] <Jimu> well, I know python, I don't know bash very well... in Python I could run ping tests and I think alter NIC settings
[4:09] * mac_ified (~mac_ified@67-9-150-210.res.bhn.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[4:10] * Taylor (~Taylor@unaffiliated/taylor) has joined #raspberrypi
[4:10] <Jimu> oh, btw, is there a way I can permanently associate a Bluetooth keyboard? So far I've had to login as Guest Session, setup the BT, logout and login as my actual user....
[4:10] <kookie> I don't know about programming, I only know how to operate the pi, lol
[4:11] <Jimu> i'd teach you some basics of programming
[4:11] * cpe (~cpe@unaffiliated/cpe) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[4:11] * cpe_ is now known as cpe
[4:12] * zenguy_pc (~oracle__@ool-3f8fe42d.dyn.optonline.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[4:12] <kookie> I have a BT dongle and leave it in the USB hub, so when it boots up, it finds that dongle and loads the settings... never had any probs with that...
[4:12] <Jimu> it's a major reason to own a RasPi
[4:12] <kookie> I have 6 of them
[4:12] <kookie> but can't program worth beans
[4:12] * sigsts (~sigsts@unaffiliated/skyroverr) has joined #raspberrypi
[4:13] <kookie> my brain is made in China... lol
[4:13] <Jimu> I have a USB BT adapter, and the OS always forgets about BT
[4:13] <kookie> ahh, sorry...
[4:13] * icemanbp (~icemanbp@host10-154-static.240-95-b.business.telecomitalia.it) has joined #raspberrypi
[4:13] <kookie> try a different one...
[4:13] <Jimu> That's the Ubuntu-MATE install anyway
[4:13] <kookie> me too
[4:13] <kookie> mine is Ubuntu
[4:14] <Jimu> I just got a couple more microSD cards, so Raspbian and that Windows Internet of Things are my next stops
[4:14] <methuzla> Jimu i've kind of done something like this by having multiple stanzas in /etc/network/interfaces
[4:14] * darkbasic (~quassel@niko.linuxsystems.it) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[4:15] <methuzla> Jimu and then bringing up the one i want with: ifup wlan0 <insertname>
[4:15] * darkbasic (~quassel@niko.linuxsystems.it) has joined #raspberrypi
[4:15] <Jimu> not to change the topic too much, but I thrive on TightVNC in windows environments... you see the same desktop as the user... I thought this would be the same with linux, but I was hugely mistaken
[4:15] <kookie> cool, ty for that info, methuzla
[4:16] <Jimu> methuzla: you can give different names for different configs, then pick the ifup command at the end?
[4:16] <methuzla> basically don't even have a wlan0 stanza
[4:16] <methuzla> have stanzas named "home" and "coffeeshop" or whatever
[4:17] <methuzla> with each being config as needed
[4:18] <methuzla> then do something like ifup wlan0=home from the command line
[4:18] * icemanbp (~icemanbp@host10-154-static.240-95-b.business.telecomitalia.it) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[4:19] <Jimu> wish i had Picture in Picture on this monitor
[4:20] <Jimu> i'm trying to ssh into the same device with a different OS, and it has the same IP, so the SSH rejects
[4:21] <Jimu> anyone use windows CMD alternative? I'm debating between Console2 and ConEmu
[4:22] <gpled> think you have to clear your ssh client so does not do that
[4:22] * Noldorin (~noldorin@unaffiliated/noldorin) Quit (Quit: –)
[4:22] * Macuser (~textual@unaffiliated/macuser) Quit (Quit: My MacBook Pro has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[4:23] <gpled> trouble i have with wifi on pi, if i plug in my eth0 cord, then my wifi will come up with out a problem
[4:23] <gpled> if i do not have the cable plugged into eth0, wifi will not come up on its own
[4:24] * zz_Vialas (~freenode@14-203-235-228.static.tpgi.com.au) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)
[4:24] <Jimu> I'm sure there's a reason it's so unintuitive... but I can't see why it should be
[4:24] <gpled> talking about from warm or cold boot
[4:24] <gpled> thinking it is the order, but that is just a gut feeling
[4:25] <gpled> thinking if wifi came up first, it would not wait for eth0
[4:25] <gpled> but i do not know
[4:26] <gpled> im away from my pi, so i cant test things out :(
[4:26] <gpled> have to run
[4:26] * gpled (~gpled@2601:1c0:c501:380e:2105:e9f2:a6e4:893) has left #raspberrypi

[4:29] <Jimu> I feel a new distro war coming

[15:22] <gordonDrogon> if your aplication is just a c/python/etc/ program then you might be able to run it under any old debian installation on a PC.
[15:22] <gordonDrogon> if you're using Pi specific stuff it might be harder though.

[15:27] * j12t (~j12t@c-107-3-142-14.hsd1.ca.comcast.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:29] <zanzabar> soLucien: I have a program that I have been writing in python for a raspberry pi module. It needs to talk via serial / gpio pins etc. So I just made it so you could toggle the module on/off for the serial & gpio connection
[15:30] <zanzabar> then when I push the code over to my pi I can then toggle it on and make sure that portion works

[15:38] <soLucien> i see. I found some resources about it, and i'll carry on donw that path
[15:38] <soLucien> bu yes, i'm building some code that doesn't do any gpio atm
[15:39] <soLucien> just sqlite, security , access control
[15:39] <soLucien> that kind of stuff
[15:39] <Tenkawa> sqlite.... that is fun
[15:39] * Tenkawa is a dba'
[15:39] <gordonDrogon> should be easy to run on a local debian system then.
[15:39] <gordonDrogon> my desktop is debian and I often test stuff on it before moving over to the Pi.
[15:40] <Tenkawa> yeah everything you listed is very routine at this point
[15:40] <soLucien> i'll integrate with an arduino once i get that as well
[15:40] <soLucien> well i have a camera as well
[15:40] <soLucien> i want to stream the camera output

[15:43] * Tenkawa is starting to like f2fs though
[15:43] <gordonDrogon> even taking to arduino is find from a linux deskop - just plug it into usb and it's the same on a linux desktop as a Pi.

[19:28] <BetaSoul> The servo is going to be pulse at a fixed rate for this application.
[19:29] <BetaSoul> *pulsed.
[19:30] <gordonDrogon> A servo or the type used in RC models needs a pulse at least once every 20mS. (although most will work with longer intervals). The pulse duration is always between 1 and 2mS. 1mS means drive the servo hard left, 2mS means drive it hard right. So you might get a 2mS pulse through the LED every 20mS if you're lucky.
