[2:04] <pksato> plug usb wifi adapter?
[2:04] * sigsts (~sigsts@unaffiliated/skyroverr) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:04] <methuzla> configure a wireless interface?
[2:04] <linuxmint> pksato: thanks, Wi-Fi dongle is in. $ lsusb, sees Wi-Fi dongle. $ iwconfig, shows Wi-Fi.
[2:05] <linuxmint> Just the bottom right Wi-Fi icon says the error: No wireless interfaces found.
[2:05] <pksato> linuxmint: some wifi adapter need extra firmware.
[2:05] <Xenthys> pksato: hi, just read the backlog and saw you answered my question about 900Hz signal

[2:11] <methuzla> what about ifconfig? does it show it has an address, etc?
[2:11] <marjo> Today I hooked my Back-UPS to my Raspberry Pi 2 Model B with USB. Now I keep getting messages like this: “Transfer to device 6 endpoint 0x1 frame 1435 failed - FIQ reported NYET. Data may have been lost.” I’ve tried adding dwc_otg.fiq_fsm_mask=0xF to /boot/config.txt, but it didn’t help. Any suggestions? As far as I can see the UPS is still connected, and apcupsd isn’t whining.

[2:13] <sasha> Hey guys, I'm having a bit of an issue with RPI.GPIO - is it normal that it has this horrible output? https://www.dropbox.com/sc/p5pc2n3nefgd2ym/AABZNcqKWd0fouryuoft59Fka
[2:13] <linuxmint> methuzla: yes, ifconfig shows the wlan0 witht he MAC address.

[2:14] <methuzla> linuxmint not MAC, but inet
[2:14] <sasha> This is the code that I'm using (from the docs) https://www.irccloud.com/pastebin/esiZXgN2/
[2:15] <linuxmint> methuzla: ? The wlan0 HWaddr shows.

[2:22] <methuzla> linuxmint so it exists, but is not configured
[2:22] <methuzla> linuxmint are you doing things via a GUI?
[2:23] <linuxmint> methuzla: the GUI doesn't work, so I configured /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf.
[2:23] <pksato> linuxmint: wired network is present ?
[2:23] <linuxmint> *GUI doesn't show any options and doesn't save settings properly.
[2:23] <linuxmint> pklaus: I have no Ethernet connected yet however that may be a final option if the Wi-Fi can't be fixed.
[2:24] <pksato> linuxmint: just to chech if all network is working/present.
[2:26] <methuzla> linuxmint assuming things aren't different in jessie, that should work
[2:26] <methuzla> linuxmint also assuming you've configured those files correctly
[2:26] <linuxmint> methuzla: yes, I guess accidentally clicking something broke it badly.
[2:26] <linuxmint> Was all working for weeks until yesterday's bump on something.
[2:27] <linuxmint> I think I clicked the Wi-Fi/Network icon on the bottom right Panel, which messed it up.
[2:27] <methuzla> but it sounds like you have access to a command line

[2:28] <linuxmint> methuzla: no, not sure how to. I tried rfkill, but unknown command.
[2:29] <Xenthys> "sudo ifdown wlan0 && sleep 3 && sudo ifup wlan0" ?
[2:29] <methuzla> sasha GPIO.setmode(GPIO.BOARD) <- are you sure you want that mode? maybe you're using the wrong pin 26?
[2:29] <sasha> ah no sorry I changed that bit to BCM
[2:30] <sasha> but it's blinking like crazy
[2:30] <methuzla> sasha got a scope?
[2:31] <linuxmint> Xenthys: Error: ioctl[CIOCSIWAP]: Operation not permitted. ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument.
[2:31] <Xenthys> ಠ_ಠ
[2:31] <Xenthys> with sudo or root access?
[2:31] <linuxmint> I used sudo
[2:32] <sasha> methuzla: there's one that sortof works
[2:32] <sasha> what should I be looking at?
[2:32] <methuzla> sasha the output to confirm the PWM looks like it should
[2:33] <Xenthys> linuxmint: try with "sudo service networking restart" and/or "sudo service NetworkManager restart"
[2:34] <methuzla> Xenthys will that work on jessie/systemd ?
[2:34] <linuxmint> Xenthys: $ sudo service networking restart. No change. $ sudo service NetworkManager restart. Failed to restart NetworkManager.service: Unit NetworkManager.service failed to load: No such file or directory.
[2:34] <Xenthys> NetworkManager may be used depending on your DE
[2:35] <Xenthys> networking is a service that may be deprecated iirc, but it's still widely used
[2:35] <linuxmint> I'm on Jessie,
[2:35] <linuxmint> *.
[2:37] <Xenthys> try to see if there is any other service related to network/wpa_supplicant
[2:37] <Xenthys> and, Windows® method, restart it
[2:37] <linuxmint> Xenthys: not sure how to. I leading towards a reinstall.
[2:38] <Xenthys> As a lazy guy, I use "sudo service <tab><tab>" to see available services
[2:38] <Xenthys> if you spot one with "wpa" or "network", well...
[2:39] <linuxmint> Xenthys: oh, that's handy. Almost as good as Google. There's only an option networking.
[2:41] <Xenthys> oh, so I don't know what to do... :/ I read that the "ioctl[CIOCSIWAP]: Operation not permitted." error msg you got can happen
[2:41] <Xenthys> retry to "sudo ifup wlan0"
[2:42] <linuxmint> Xenthys: ifup: interface wlan0 already configured
[2:42] <Xenthys> linuxmint: I don't know if you already found that : http://omarriott.com/aux/raspberry-pi-wifi/
[2:42] <Xenthys> oh.

[2:47] <sasha> any ideas how I can fix this? where is the issue coming from?
[2:48] <linuxmint> Xenthys: thanks. Yes there's a problem. I'l try an Ethernet connection, then a reboot.

[10:18] <PaulFertser> Good morning ladies, gentlemen and the children. I am writing to you to make a humble inquiry on the details of the Model B+ design. I am specifically interested in either seeing full schematics or getting a confirmation that the power rail connected to the USB ports in the said model can not be controlled by the SoC. Thank you in advance for your kind answer.

[12:03] * pksato (~PEBKAC@unaffiliated/pksato) has joined #raspberrypi
[12:03] <Stanto> PaulFertser: no, you'll likely need a mosfet, since the Pi is 3.3v logic and USB devices are 5v. The GPIO is not 5v tolerant so you'd need to use something like a mosfet and probably break / break out the 5v power line for the usb port you're using. It'll likely get messy and involve a bit of physical hackery.
[12:04] <Stanto> If it's your only USB attached device that's a bit easier but you still need interim hardware, but it costs pennies.

[12:06] <Stanto> PaulFertser: Huh. Well, actually, what I suggested was just one option. Alternatively: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=93463
[12:07] <Stanto> Haven't tested that, so cannot confirm.
[12:08] <PaulFertser> Stanto: I am suspecting that a USB-attached UMTS modem that will work for many days straight might need a reboot every now and then. So when designing the hardware that would be a nice option to have.

[15:26] <v0lksman> hello all! I've wired up an LED strip following this http://popoklopsi.github.io/RaspberryPi-LedStrip/#/
[15:26] * j12t (~j12t@c-107-3-142-14.hsd1.ca.comcast.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[15:26] <v0lksman> my problem is that no matter what I do I can't get it to turn off the strip. I can set LOW and HIGH and notice a slight change to the strip but can't seem to control it as I thought I would be able to
[15:27] <v0lksman> I was able to get each color to turn off and on using an arduino while I waited for my pi to arrive
[15:29] <v0lksman> when I was fooling around with the arduino I was able to get the lights to turn off and on but noticed an extra blip would show when turning on the lights...IE HIGH would mean a very quick flash off/on and then wihtin a second the color would turn on
[15:30] <IT_Sean> How much does the LED strip draw, and what's it rated voltage? Are you powering it directly from the GPIO pins?
[15:31] <v0lksman> I'm not 100% sure on the draw from the strip...I suppose I should look further into that...It has it's own 12V power supply that is attached as per http://popoklopsi.github.io/RaspberryPi-LedStrip/img/rgb/small/pi_4.png
[15:32] <IT_Sean> Ah.
[15:32] <v0lksman> oh...just noticed that image doesn't include the 12V

[20:14] <aktomariel_2012> how to move berryboot oses to usb hdd ?
[20:14] <Gamah> the pi's bootloader *only* reads from the sd card so you will always need the SD card present with a boot directory.

[22:08] * Svardskampe (~Svardskam@185-14-ftth.onsnetstudenten.nl) has joined #raspberrypi
[22:08] <Tenkawa> their approach to computers bothered me in the 80's even
[22:08] <Berg> you know like normal things
[22:09] <Berg> its also friday 23rd oct 8am
[22:09] <Berg> hehehe
[22:09] <Berg> I know its hard toi consume these strange ideas but im from the future
[22:10] * GerhardSchr (~GerhardSc@unaffiliated/gerhardschr) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[22:10] <Berg> this is how its going to be
[22:10] * ch007m_2 (~chm@ip-83-134-33-209.dsl.scarlet.be) Quit (Quit: My MacBook Pro has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[22:10] <Tenkawa> we're in trouble yes?
[22:10] * exonormal (~mini-acer@ip-64-134-70-121.public.wayport.net) Quit (Quit: Konversation terminated!)
[22:10] <Tenkawa> haahaa.. always

[22:13] * rvalles (~rvalles@unaffiliated/rvalles) has joined #raspberrypi
[22:13] * thescatman (~thescatma@unaffiliated/thescatman) has joined #raspberrypi
[22:14] <thescatman> so really basic question, are there 2 pins on the GPIO I can just connect an LED to and it'll be on when the pi's on, without any issues?
[22:16] <Gamah> thescatman: you could take over the spot on the PCB for the existing power indicator.
[22:16] <Gamah> otherwise the answer to your question is no, not without some code.
[22:16] <thescatman> now that's not a bad idea
[22:16] <Gamah> errrmm... or does the gpio have a +5v?
[22:16] <thescatman> iirc yes
[22:16] <IT_Sean> it's not software controllable
[22:17] <IT_Sean> but, there is a 5v pin
[22:17] <Gamah> https://superpiboy.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/raspberry-pi-rev2-gpio-pinout.jpg
[22:17] <thescatman> yeah https://superpiboy.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/raspberry-pi-rev2-gpio-pinout.jpg
[22:17] <Gamah> so there you go
[22:17] <Gamah> thescatman: you'd need a resistor to step it down, but there you go.
[22:17] <thescatman> guess I can just solder a resistor inline
[22:17] <Gamah> of course.
[22:18] <thescatman> got a ton of these lying around http://www.silverstonetek.com/images/qa/WB090112/wb112-4.jpg , thought I'd add it to a cctv camera pi
[22:19] <Gamah> the best cctv cameras are the ones without lights... :)
[22:19] * Tenkawa (~arakeen@unaffiliated/tenkawa) Quit (Quit: leaving)
[22:19] <thescatman> nah, preferably needs to be visibly on
[22:19] <thescatman> outdoors setup
[22:19] <thescatman> too many burglars round here :L
[22:21] <thescatman> also need to work out if I can get away with a wifi usb stick on the pi :L
[22:21] <thescatman> ethernet cable running to it is such a pain.
[22:21] <Berg> wifi works if the distance not too far
[22:22] <thescatman> distance is dodgy
[22:22] <thescatman> a little too far for a smartphone, and easily enough for all our laptops
[22:22] <Wec> You could attach some big antenna
[22:22] <Gamah> cantenna
[22:22] <thescatman> that's pretty much the best estimate I can give
[22:22] * kolla (~kolla@brendeholten.uninett.no) has joined #raspberrypi

[22:24] * sigsts (~sigsts@unaffiliated/skyroverr) Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[22:24] <thescatman> a cantenna's not gonna fit in a cctv camera housing hehe
[22:26] * esas (~esas@unaffiliated/esas) has joined #raspberrypi
[22:26] <Berg> then you wonder why do it this way when you can buy a remote camera cheaper then the cost of a wifi dongle
[22:27] <Berg> http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=remote+camera

[22:44] <vegii> Gamah: But fpv is so expensive
[22:44] <Gamah> i'm sure you can get something that *works* for around the price of a pi, camera, wifi dongle and ap.
[22:45] <Gamah> a common misconception is that projects involving a pi only cost $35...
