[0:09] * codestorm (~codestorm@cpe-75-83-205-183.socal.res.rr.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:11] <shauno> JakeSays: look for a file /etc/*-release. it doesn't get much better than that, sadly
[0:11] <Karlton> I used the rpi-4.2.y branch and anholt's fork and different configs, but I never see anything in dmesg that mentions vc4 and I end up with a color swirl instead of a framebuffer
[0:18] <Karlton> the bcm27835_fb works fine of course, but it says to set it to =n in the config
[0:18] <Karlton> s/bcm27835_fb/bcm2835_fb/
[0:19] <JakeSays> shauno: heh. thats perfect
[0:21] <shauno> it would be, if it was consistently named
[0:21] <JakeSays> anyone running arch or ubuntu? i need the contents of your /etc/*-release

[1:21] <ali1234> well i got i2c-gpio module working, but it doesn't *actually* work
[1:22] <DL7LN> Hey everybody :) I'm trying to enable the device-tree on my pi2 because the bcm2835-lib seems to need it. but I'm running gentoo on the pi and I didn't find it in the kernel? Any help is really appreciated!
[1:23] * fredp2-away (~fredp@unaffiliated/fredp) Quit ()

[1:25] <JakeSays> anyone know of detailed, low level documentation on how i2c works on the pi?
[1:25] <ali1234> how low do you want?
[1:25] * linkedinyou (~linkediny@unaffiliated/linkedinyou) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:26] <ali1234> the registers are described here https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/bcm2835/BCM2835-ARM-Peripherals.pdf
[1:26] <JakeSays> low enough to know what memory addresses are used
[1:26] <ali1234> page 28
[1:26] <JakeSays> ah excellent. thanks!
[1:26] <ali1234> DL7LN: did you use the mkknlimg tool on your kernel?
[1:26] <JakeSays> are they the same for models 1 & 2?
[1:27] <ali1234> yes but the base address is different
[1:27] <ali1234> that is merely an artifact of the increase to 1GB
[1:27] <JakeSays> ah ok
[1:27] * doomlord (~textual@host81-155-67-16.range81-155.btcentralplus.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:31] <ali1234> also the base address in the docs is for VC side
[1:31] <ali1234> which you cannot access
[1:31] <ali1234> it is remapped into ARM space
[1:31] <ali1234> that's the only reason it changes
[1:31] <ali1234> it's at 0x3fnnnnnn on Pi 2
[1:32] * darkbasic (~quassel@niko.linuxsystems.it) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[1:32] <ali1234> i think it's 0x20nnnnnn on other models

[1:37] <JakeSays> ali1234: ah thanks
[1:37] * spybert (~spybert@c-50-173-18-125.hsd1.ca.comcast.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[1:40] <DL7LN> ali1234, I don't think so.
[1:40] <ali1234> DL7LN: well you need to or else device tree will not work
[1:40] <DL7LN> ali1234, how do i do this?
[1:41] <DL7LN> ali1234, and where do I get this tool? (I'm using gentoo)
[1:41] <ali1234> https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/linux/kernel/building.md
[1:41] * slicepaperwords (~chris@c-73-45-154-59.hsd1.il.comcast.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:41] <ali1234> this explains everything about kernel building including how to get the tools and how to run the mkknlimg
[1:42] * DMackey (~n2dvm@cpe-67-246-122-255.twcny.res.rr.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[1:44] <DL7LN> ali1234, thnx, I'll try this...
[1:45] * cessor (~cessor@75-131-209-49.dhcp.gwnt.ga.charter.com) has joined #raspberrypi

[1:50] * nuxil (nux@88.84.187.99) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:50] <nuxil> any hardware dudes in here?
[1:51] * fennesz (~fennesz@adsl-39.37.6.247.tellas.gr) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:51] <nuxil> i want to confirm that my math is right. i have a transistor, a general puyrpose type. i want to use a geo pin to switch it off/on.
[1:52] <nuxil> Using 6mA as set current for Ib (current basis), afik the geo pin high state is 3.3V.
[1:52] <nuxil> So if im not entierly wrong. my resistor on Basis should be 450ohm. right? Rb = (U - Ube) / Ib. => 3.3 - 0.6 / 0.006 = 450.
[1:52] <nuxil> Then set the strengt of the geo pin to 8mA. so the is a 2mA to go on.
[1:52] <nuxil> does this sounds right??
[1:52] <nuxil> https://gyazo.com/c42347819bee9b35bb75ba3b72239814 awesome paint illustration
[1:55] * nodiscc (~bsp@unaffiliated/nodiscc) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:55] * Sisco (~Sisco@unaffiliated/sisco) has joined #raspberrypi
[1:56] * Flynnn (~textual@unaffiliated/flynnn) Quit (Quit: Auf Wiedersehen!)
[1:56] <nuxil> idea?
[1:58] <DL7LN> ali1234, my kernel source doesn't have the script. when I'm downloading the raspian-kernel mentioned on the site, can I still use it with my gentoo-rootfs?
[1:58] <ali1234> the script is in the tools repo
[1:58] <ali1234> i think, anyway
[2:05] * weems2 (~hagrid@71-14-62-161.dhcp.stls.mo.charter.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:08] * weems (~hagrid@unaffiliated/weems) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[2:11] <ali1234> finally got this working
[2:11] <ali1234> now to answer my own question...
[2:13] * tjt263 (~RAPSCA77I@unaffiliated/tjt263) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:13] <nuxil> got an answer for me aswel :p
[2:14] <tjt263> hey my buddy just got a raspberrypi recently
[2:15] <tjt263> i just asked him about it
[2:15] * weems2 (~hagrid@71-14-62-161.dhcp.stls.mo.charter.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
[2:15] <tjt263> and he said he hasnt done anything with it yet because he needs to buy an lcdscreen first
[2:15] <tjt263> is that true?
[2:15] <JakeSays> no
[2:15] <JakeSays> you can hook it directly to a tv
[2:16] <JakeSays> using either hdmi or composite video
[2:16] <tjt263> i was like just ssh into it and he said he has no OS installed
[2:16] <tjt263> yeah i thought it must have av i/o
[2:17] * fennesz (~fennesz@adsl-39.37.6.247.tellas.gr) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[2:17] <JakeSays> well, i usually use a monitor for initial configuration
[2:19] <ali1234> you can also use the serial port console
[2:20] <JakeSays> how do you do that?
[2:20] <ali1234> gpio 14 and 15 to a serial voltage converter then in to the serial port on your pc
[2:20] <JakeSays> ah ok
[2:21] <ali1234> serial console is enabled by default on official raspbian images
[2:21] <JakeSays> huh. i'll have to try that
[2:21] <JakeSays> would be *much* handier than dealing with a monitor/keyboard
[2:21] <ali1234> it's handy if you run out of monitors
[2:21] <ali1234> nuxil: i could be wrong but i dont think you need that resistor at all
[2:22] <ali1234> if the transistor would draw that much current that you need a resistor, then you won't be able to turn it on anyway
[2:22] <ali1234> in which case you need to chain up multiple transistors
[2:24] <nuxil> ali1234, i need that transistor since its beeing uses to drive a heavy load such as a motor.
[2:24] <ali1234> yes you need the transistor
[2:24] <ali1234> but not the resistor
[2:25] <nuxil> 3.3 V in on the base? dude comeone
[2:25] * Macuser (~textual@unaffiliated/macuser) Quit (Quit: Textual IRC Client: www.textualapp.com)
[2:25] <nuxil> data sheet sais max 1V for the transistor im using'
[2:26] <ali1234> that seems weird
[2:26] <ali1234> if you are really driving a huge load
[2:26] <ali1234> i would expect the base to be higher voltage than that
[2:27] <nuxil> the transistor for a 250 hfe
[2:27] <nuxil> *got
[2:27] * KD7JWC (~shantorn@67-5-252-249.ptld.qwest.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[2:28] <ali1234> link to datasheet
[2:28] <ali1234> ?
[2:29] <nuxil> ali1234, why do you think its weird that it has a max 1V on the basis ? the collector/emittor can handle upto 45V. but as you know a transistor starts to lead at 0.6 V.
[2:29] <tjt263> so JakeSays do they all have RCA out?
[2:29] <JakeSays> they all have composite out
[2:29] <tjt263> i think his is model 2b or something
[2:29] <JakeSays> the earlier ones have an RCA jake
[2:29] <JakeSays> *jack
[2:30] * weems (~hagrid@unaffiliated/weems) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:30] * KD7JWC (~Shantorn@67-5-252-249.ptld.qwest.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:30] <ali1234> nuxil: the operating range for a transistor varies, they are not all the same
[2:30] <tjt263> oh my bad i thought composite == rca
[2:30] <nuxil> ali1234, i know,
[2:31] <ali1234> tjt263: the old ones have a phono plug for composite, the new ones have composite on the audio jack 4th pin
[2:31] * tmcmahon (~tmcmahon@d-230.lcom.net) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:32] * Flynnn (~textual@unaffiliated/flynnn) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:33] * Svardskampe (~Svardskam@185-14-ftth.onsnetstudenten.nl) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[2:33] <tjt263> oh cool
[2:34] <tjt263> so will an ordinary RCA/phono -> RCA/Phono cable work, or is it like RCA/Phono -> 3.5mm TRRS or something
[2:35] * ppq (~ppq@unaffiliated/ppq) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:36] * Macuser (~textual@unaffiliated/macuser) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:37] <nuxil> ali1234,
[2:37] <ali1234> reading it
[2:38] <nuxil> or is it 5V max? now im confused.
[2:40] <ali1234> me too
[2:42] <ali1234> oh i see
[2:42] <ali1234> it depends whether your load is before or after the transistor... common emitter or emitter follower
[2:44] <nuxil> so if my load is the collector i use which =
[2:44] <nuxil> ?
[2:45] <ali1234> common emitter
[2:45] * DMackey (~n2dvm@cpe-67-246-122-255.twcny.res.rr.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:46] * doomlord (~textual@host81-155-67-16.range81-155.btcentralplus.com) Quit (Quit: My MacBook Pro has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[2:46] <ali1234> so with emitter follower you don't really need the resistor
[2:46] <ali1234> but with common emitter you do
[2:46] <ali1234> http://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/81835/does-the-voltage-on-base-limit-the-voltage-on-emitter this explains it pretty well
[2:47] <ali1234> so your resistor should be about 1350 ohms
[2:47] * somis (~somis@167.160.44.197) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[2:47] <nuxil> show my your math pls :)
[2:48] <DL7LN> ali1234, I decided to install raspian for testing on the pi. is it possible to get a archive with only the necessary userland instead of the overloaded zip-file?
[2:48] <ali1234> emitter voltage = 0, input = 3.3... need a drop of 2.7V to get to 0.6V
[2:48] <DL7LN> ali1234, mean: simply copy the files on the sd-card, not flashing a complete image?
[2:48] * zacdev (~zacdev@unaffiliated/zacdev) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:48] <ali1234> sorry forgot to use the correct current for your transistor
[2:49] <ali1234> base current is 0.5A?
[2:49] <ali1234> 2.7/0.5 = 5.4 ohms
[2:50] <ali1234> meh... i dunno
[2:50] <nuxil> no way. i'll blow my pi :p
[2:50] <ali1234> ask ##electronics, they will school you though
[2:51] <ali1234> as i said, with big power transistors you might need to chain them
[2:51] <nuxil> yea.
[2:52] <nuxil> i got some smaller ones tho.
[2:52] <nuxil> but they are pnp's
[2:52] <nuxil> i dont likle pnp's
[2:52] <nuxil> :p
[2:54] <nuxil> not sure how to drive something from the gpio using a pnp
[2:54] <tjt263> so ali1234 will an ordinary RCA/phono -> RCA/Phono cable work, or is it like RCA/Phono -> 3.5mm TRRS or something?
[2:55] <ali1234> tjt263: you need 3.5mm jack cable, but unfortunately there is no standard for which pin to use for video
[2:55] * weems2 (~hagrid@71-14-62-161.dhcp.stls.mo.charter.com) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:55] <ali1234> one thing i do know is that nokia cables are not compatible
[2:55] <ali1234> and yes TRRS
[2:56] <tjt263> so video on the sleeve?
[2:56] <ali1234> don't know off hand
[2:56] <ali1234> http://www.raspberrypi-spy.co.uk/2014/07/raspberry-pi-model-b-3-5mm-audiovideo-jack/
[2:56] <tjt263> oh no worries thought you said pin4
[2:56] <tjt263> cheers n_n
[2:57] * duckpuppy (~patrickai@50.96.70.44) has joined #raspberrypi
[2:57] <ali1234> lol, nokia uses a different standard to any of those

[17:17] <B3ink> Well, the only other chargers I have are a samsung phone charger and a battery pack.
[17:17] <exonormal> USB on puters only supply 0.5 amp
[17:18] <exonormal> you need at least 1.0 amp
[17:18] <B3ink> Lemme look at the samsung charger.
[17:18] <exonormal> at 5 vollts
[17:18] <B3ink> Is the output or input 1 amp?
[17:18] <exonormal> output
[17:19] <B3ink> Ok, I'll try the samsung.
[17:19] <exonormal> at 5 volts
[17:19] <B3ink> If I unplug the pi, will the SD Card corrupt like I heard it would?

[17:21] <B3ink> Plugged into wall, now no ethernet lights are showing.
[17:21] <B3ink> The output is 5.3 volts at 2 amps.
[17:21] <DBordello> It was softare that allowed remote control of the GPIO pins, but for the life of me I cannot find it
[17:21] <exonormal> a little high.
[17:22] <DBordello> It also plotted the output
[17:22] <B3ink> So, I need exactly 5 volts?
[17:22] <exonormal> yes
[17:22] <exonormal> look in raspberrypi.org in forums, DBordello
[17:22] <B3ink> Let me get the battery pack.

[22:10] <gordonDrogon> its actually safe to make that pin an output and control it in software...
[22:11] <ali1234> there's also raspi-gpio command which dumps the full state of a gpio pin
[22:11] <ali1234> wish i'd known about that yesterday
[22:11] <gordonDrogon> gpio readall is more usefull IMO as it gives the pin-out.
[22:11] <ali1234> sweet
[22:12] <ali1234> that is exactly what i needed 24 hours ago

[22:16] <ali1234> yes, i was thinking of a nice big bright and simple UI for kids though
[22:16] <gordonDrogon> I have one in BASIC...
[22:16] <ali1234> possibly with ability to toggle gpios
[22:16] <ali1234> with touch screen control
[22:16] <gordonDrogon> that's on the to-do list.
[22:17] <gordonDrogon> I suppose I could use all the graphics front-end I use in my BASIC to make a native C application.
[22:17] <gordonDrogon> however if I fix the auto-run in RTB, then you'll be able to run RTB programs from the command-line.

[22:23] <ali1234> i only have ssh...
[22:24] <gordonDrogon> ah yes. it needs a monitor.
[22:24] <gordonDrogon> it launches a GUI
[22:24] <ali1234> so i added a #! to the top of a rtb program and set it executable... seems to work?
[22:24] <gordonDrogon> then everything is inside the GUI after that - like an old-fashioed 8-bit micro (only it's 64-bit)
[22:25] <gordonDrogon> yes, #! might work - at one point it didn't, but I've not checked recently. not done much work on it for the past year.

[22:29] <gordonDrogon> ah, right. it might no work. the load code gets passed the filename - and then tries to add .rtb to it, so if you pass it a file that is already called something.rtb, it tries to load something.rtb.rtb and fails.
[22:29] <gordonDrogon> I'm sure that used to work. wonder why it stopped.

[22:31] <ali1234> why mangle the filename the user chose?
[22:31] <gordonDrogon> its a long story. I just need to add code to check to see if the supplied filename exists, and if not, then try adding .rtb to it.
[22:32] <gordonDrogon> the -d flag dumps video modes. that's really not going to work if you'r via ssh.

[23:29] <gordonDrogon> it's really really obscure.
[23:29] <ali1234> but when you understand the string slicing operations it's sooooooo good
[23:30] <gordonDrogon> I mean, if you're going to write stuff like that, you might as well write in perl... :)
[23:30] <ali1234> not at all
[23:30] <ali1234> python array slicing is really nicely done and not hard to understand at all when it is explained
[23:31] <gordonDrogon> I'm sure it is - I just don't have a need for it.
