[0:00] <Berg> you
[0:00] * Angs (~ubuntu@85.235.3.188) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:01] <Berg> you said how much would a pi take
[0:01] <t3chguy> If you're looking at that much power
[0:01] <t3chguy> Forget about the pi
[0:01] <t3chguy> It'll be insignificant
[0:01] * esas (~esas@unaffiliated/esas) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:01] * travnewmatic (~travnewma@corp.external.dfw02.800hosting.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 272 seconds)

[0:02] * nrtga (~max@CPE-58-169-211-4.lns1.fli.bigpond.net.au) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[0:02] <sasha> the goal would be to beat these guys https://www.dropbox.com/sc/ectn36j0hgo3wso/AACiPMJrSH_xg5T5rUXwxUbOa
[0:02] <Berg> set it up next to a gym and have lots of pedal bikes = gen power
[0:03] * MiB (~MiB@41.254.3.47.WiMAX.dynamic.ltt.ly) Quit (Client Quit)
[0:03] * MiB (~MiB@41.254.3.47.WiMAX.dynamic.ltt.ly) has joined #raspberrypi

[0:06] * Imaginativeone (~Imaginati@pool-173-66-94-87.washdc.fios.verizon.net) Quit (Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…)
[0:07] <sasha> that was the technical tent
[0:07] <sasha> but they had a warm shower, toilet, 220v/12v/5v power, a fridge,.. some years they even had a jacuzzi
[0:08] * tomeff (~tomeff@ip-78-102-111-158.net.upcbroadband.cz) Quit (Quit: tomeff)

[0:10] <gorroth> man, 220v power
[0:10] <gorroth> i'm going to install 240v power to my back yard's shed soon
[0:10] <gorroth> it only has 120v right now
[0:10] <gorroth> i don't know what they were thinking when they put power into that place
[0:10] * sasha is in europe
[0:10] * gorroth is in usa
[0:11] <gorroth> i need the high power to support welders and heaters and things like that
[0:11] <sasha> but I still need to figure out how this works: how does the pi poll the server? I'm guessing it's not going to wget a json every second
[0:12] <gorroth> you can ask http to send new data only if the cache changed
[0:12] <gorroth> assuming the server supports it
[0:13] <gorroth> it's all driven through http headers, but i don't remember which ones right now
[0:13] <gorroth> oh, ETag
[0:13] <gorroth> and a couple other related ones
[0:13] * duckpuppy (~patrickai@50.96.70.44) Quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
[0:14] <gorroth> the server just needs to cooperate though
[0:14] <t3chguy> sasha: I'd cut out the http overhead to save mobile data
[0:14] * brethil (~brethil@2.236.131.243) has joined #raspberrypi
[0:14] <Berg> You want you pi to poll a website?
[0:14] <t3chguy> just have a Node or Py socket server somewhere in the internetz
[0:14] <t3chguy> and have the Pi poll that
[0:15] <gorroth> i wouldn't poll if i build my own server; i'd probably have it drop notifications
[0:15] <Berg> bottle.py
[0:15] <Berg> tiny

[13:53] <cousin_luigi> mgottschlag: Right now I'm working with qemu, at best.
[13:53] <mgottschlag> because the TRM you linked states that the register is always available in the hardware, but the OS must allow user access

[13:56] <mgottschlag> the code you linked does exactly that... checking whether the register is configured to be accessible, and then reading it
[13:56] <cousin_luigi> mgottschlag: I see. So it's OS-specific and it doesn't vary on implementation.
[13:56] <cousin_luigi> Accessibility I mean.
[13:57] <mgottschlag> yeah. Either the OS allows user-level access, or it doesn't
[13:57] <cousin_luigi> Anyway the arm.com article refers to armv7

[14:27] <napnap> mgottschlag, yeah, so with the 1k ohm resitor built in the parllax module , it seems not to be ok ? (it seems to be 5mA and not 0.5).
[14:27] <shiftplusone> mgottschlag: maybe, but they're not there for things like 5v tolerance, as some people assume. I know the discussion is about 3.9v and all that, but still.
[14:29] <mgottschlag> napnap: in the worst case you'd end up somewhere around 0.3mA (3.3V, plus 0.3V worst-case voltage drop for the clamp diode, makes 0.3V along the resistor)
[14:29] <mgottschlag> so it *might* work, but you're deep in unspecified terrain

The interface appears to be +5v -> resistor -> LED (opto coupler) -> open pin designed to be connected to a 5v microcontroller GPIO pin. In the Pi, the relay turns on when you put the pin into output mode, regardless of setting the output high or low and only turns off when you put the pin into input mode. Some people seem happy with this... (eek!)

[22:22] <ali1234> you might. but on a linux system that is very unlikely to happen with anything important
[22:22] <ali1234> as opposed to windows where it writes to the register 10,000 times per second
[22:22] <JakeSays> important is subjective
[22:22] <ali1234> note that in the context of what we're discussing, user files are not being backed up
[22:23] <JakeSays> oh
[22:23] <ali1234> only the operating system itself
[22:23] <JakeSays> well in that case the system is essentially readonly
[22:23] <ali1234> exactly
[22:23] <ali1234> except a few log files

[22:24] <ali1234> lol, no
[22:24] * nfk (~nfk@unaffiliated/nfk) has joined #raspberrypi
[22:24] <JakeSays> yes, it is. the os is very stable
[22:24] <JakeSays> and when you do a snapshot, it is totally readonly
[22:24] <ali1234> the registry is a huge problem
[22:24] <JakeSays> not if you do a snapshot
[22:24] <ali1234> and shadow volume copy counts as special software
[22:24] <JakeSays> its part of the os
[22:25] <ali1234> doesn't matter
[22:25] <JakeSays> ..
[22:25] <ali1234> windows has a built in gui backup tools
[22:25] <JakeSays> yes, but you dont need them to do a backup
[22:25] <ali1234> the point is you can't mount an ntfs filesystem, copy all the files on it to another ntfs filesystem on another disk, and then boot from the other disk
[22:26] <ali1234> it won't work for a number of reasons
[22:26] * lemonzest (~lemonzest@unaffiliated/lemonzest) Quit (Quit: Leaving)

[22:27] <ali1234> and let's assume you also dd over the MBR and any bootloader information in the partition headers

[22:27] <ali1234> under windows the result will not boot without a system repair disk

[22:28] <JakeSays> ok but i'm not sure what the advantage is of being able to do that
[22:28] <JakeSays> if i want that on windows i can just create a deployment package, which is essentially an os install made from an existing installation
[22:29] * ch007m (~chm@ip-83-134-33-236.dsl.scarlet.be) Quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[22:29] <ali1234> the advantage is that simple command line tools like cp and tar are available on any operating system
[22:30] <ali1234> but windows deployment tools and shadow copy are not
[22:30] <JakeSays> shadow copy is part of the os.
[22:30] <ali1234> and if i don't have a running copy of the OS?
[22:31] <JakeSays> then you just use a linux stick to dup the drive, boot, and change the sid.
[22:31] <ali1234> yes, you dd the whole drive
[22:31] <ali1234> don't touch the filesystem at all
[22:31] <ali1234> or if it's EFI you recreate the partitions and dd them, and then fix the ids otherwise it won't boot
[22:31] <myself> so tar is built into linux, and it's okay, but volume shadow copy and backup are built into windows, but they're disqualified somehow. I love your logic, keep logicing, I'm making popcorn
[22:32] <ali1234> but, that copies zeroes, which is the problem we are trying to avoid here
[22:32] <JakeSays> lol
[22:32] <ali1234> tar isn't built in to linux

[23:00] <JakeSays> right
[23:00] <ali1234> yeah the PCF supports PWM from 0 to 4095
[23:00] <JakeSays> ohhh
[23:00] <ali1234> so for max speed you need to give it a much bigger value
[23:00] <JakeSays> ah ok
[23:00] <ali1234> adafruit code multiplies by... whatever
